Many people told me that a trip to Israel would change my life, and I believed them. To walk where Jesus walked, to see Galilee, to walk the shores of the lake where Jesus called his first disciples, taught the multitudes and calmed a storm with a word couldn’t be anything short of trans-formative. To go up to Jerusalem from Jericho, to enter the gates of the city, to move along the Via Dolorosa, to be in the place where Jesus died and was raised had to be a powerful experience. Those people were right. And yet I was changed in unexpected ways and by surpris-ing experiences. Our trip’s host, pastor Peter Holmes, was able to arrange a meeting for our group with Elias Cha-cour. Elias Chacour, a Palestinian Christian, is the retired Archbishop of Galilee for the Melkite Greek Catholic Church. Father Chacour founded the Mar Elias Educational Institutions, a Christian school that brings together Chris-tian, Muslim and Jewish students to learn together. The Mars Elias Educational Institution is considered one of the top schools in Israel. He has been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize on several occasions because of his efforts to nurture peace in Israel through community education. As I listened to Fr. Chacour share his story as an Arab Pal-estinian Christian and his vision for peace I was reminded of how complicated matters of religion and politics are in the region. I was deeply moved, however, by his convic-

tion that peace will be achieved around a school desk ra-ther than a negotiating table. An impromptu trip to the Western Wall was another of those transformative moments for me. After returning to our hotel after a long day of walking and touring, a small group of us decided to journey back into the Old City of Jerusalem and visit the Western Wall. The wall is a rem-nant of the city wall built by Herod the Great, and is one of the closest spots to where the Holy of Holies would have been. For many years devout Jews and other pilgrims have gathered at the wall to pray. I approached the wall with a bit of trepidation; I didn’t want to accidentally do some-thing inappropriate or irreverent. I placed my hand on cool limestone and began to pray, and as I did words left me. A deep sense of the holiness of the place filled my heart and mind, and I was overwhelmed by the realization that millions of people have stopped to pray in this spot, and that I was dangerously close to the place where the ancient Jews believed God made his home on earth. I did-n’t try to speak. I just listened, and that was right. Thank you for the opportunity to take this trip, to see these remarkable places, and to be changed.

The Music Ministry at North Stuart slows just a bit during the summer months but I wanted to let you know the things that continue through the next two months. Throughout the summer, with the exception of Vacation Bible School week, the Monday Morning Ministries meets at 10:30 each Monday. We sing for an hour and then enjoy the fellowship as long as we like. The Sanctuary Choir rehearses each Wednesday, 7 - 8:15, and sings each Sunday in the worship service. During June and July, the choir joins the congregation during the ser-mon. If you have thought about singing with the Sanctuary Choir but didn't want to make a long-term commitment, the summer is a wonderful time for you to try it our and see how it might impact your worship. Children's choirs is complete for the school year. We will resume in August once school starts back, However, we do have a week of Music Camp slated for children grades 1-5 for (Sally, put the date here). The cost is $50 per child and will run from 9-12:30 each day. If you are interested in

more details, or would like to register you child, call the church office and let me know. Happy summer! Keep singing!

The first Saturday of each month we have written a book project. The month of July will be the second Saturday, July 11, from 9:30 a.m. to noon. Please call the church office to reserve your spot.

Please call 772-232-2565 or email

[email protected] to make your reservation or schedule a seminar.

Visit www.rednotebookproject.com to see what this is all about. This would be the perfect seminar

for your club or HOA.
