FROM THE RABBI If you want to expand your knowledge of Judaism and start to build a Jewish home library, the following are

some books I would recommend you purchase:

Jewish Literacy by Rabbi Joseph Telushkin -- If you want to have just one book in your

home which explains Judaism in an easy-to-read, complete manner, this is the book to

buy. It discusses the Bible, Jewish history, American Jewish life, anti-Semitism, Jewish

texts, Jewish ethics and basic beliefs, Jewish holidays, Jewish life cycle events, the syna-

gogue and prayer in a very thorough and comprehensible manner. And the author has a good sense of hu-

mor. You probably won't read the book from cover to cover, but if you ever want to look up something

about Judaism and find an answer you can understand, this is the book to have.

Living Judaism by Rabbi Wayne D. Dosick -- This book, available in paperback, is a guide to Jewish be-

lief, tradition and practice. It deals with many of the topics in Jewish Literacy (above), but in not as much

detail. It is much shorter than Jewish Literacy and can be read from cover to cover.

Biblical Literacy by Rabbi Joseph Telushkin -- The Bible can be a tedious and difficult book to read. In

this book, Rabbi Telushkin discusses the Bible from beginning to end in a clear, easy to read fashion. He

summarizes the text and gives a lot of explanations and background information. You can read the book

from cover to cover or you can use it as a reference when you want to look something up.

Kosher Jesus by Rabbi Shmuley Boteach -- An Orthodox rabbi who is the author of well over twenty

books, including a very popular book entitled Kosher Sex, Rabbi Boteach, in this book, tries to emphasize

the common ethical and moral teachings that unite Judaism and Christianity rather then the beliefs and

practices which separate them. He points out the Jewish roots of Jesus' ethical and moral teachings.

The New Encyclopedia of Judaism by Geoffrey Wigoder (Editor-In-Chief) -- This is a scholarly one vol-

ume encyclopedia dealing in detail about all aspects of Judaism. It is not a book for leisure reading. But if

you want a very comprehensive reference book about Judaism to keep in your home, this is a book to con-

sider.

Have a wonderful summer. Remember that weekly Friday evening (7:30 P.M.) and Saturday morning

(10:30 A.M.) services continue throughout the summer months.

FROM THE PRESIDENT:

Dear Members & Friends,

As I write this message I am preparing for a well

deserved vacation. I will then be ready for our congregational

meeting on June 7th. We will head into out twelfth year as the

Reform Temple in Myrtle Beach. This will also mark the end of

the second year that we have occupied our own building.

When we formed Temple Shalom it was quite clear to all of us

that it would take time to establish ourselves as a vibrant place

of worship and as a gathering place for those Jewish families

who wanted and needed a reform congregation . I can say with

great pride that we have done well in serving our community.

As I look ahead, we must ask what will the next six years be

like ? Will we gather to celebrate our "Chai Year" ? This is the

time to prepare for the next few years. We will need people that

will take up the gauntlet and put on the mantle of leadership ,

As much as I and our wonderful board have served this Temple

we must reach out to other members in the next few years to

become our leaders.

Please don't think the task is too great for you. Each of us has

our own style that is unique to each individual, Your way of

leadership may be just what Temple Shalom needs.

The work of our hands and the blessing of our minds is great;

the will to do so is even greater. I pray that Temple Shalom will

continue to be an even greater Synagogue in the years ahead. I

will always be proud our beginnings and our accomplishments.

I thank each of you for the support you have given to me these

past two years. Each of you have become my friends and my

family, Thank you .

Sisterhood News

June marks the end of our 2016- 2017 Sisterhood year – a year filled with fellowship, fun and financial success!

I would like to take this opportunity to personally thank my Board – Bobbie Guseman,

Cookie Brenner, Sheila Honer, Irene Klein, Meryl Chiarello and Wendy Margulies for their time, hard work and dedication to Sisterhood and Temple Shalom and their tire-less support of me and my efforts to make Sisterhood as successful as possible! I sin-

cerely appreciate all that they have done this year and look forward to working with them again in the upcoming year!

I would also like to thank Natalie Kramer and Irene Klein and their committee for their hard work in making Break the Fast a great success! A big thank you also to Lynn

Sostrin and Michelle Foels and their committee for making Chanukah Happenings a great success as well. Everyone had a great time at both of these great events!

Thanks also to Mary Weissman and Wendy Margulies for working on the revision of the Sisterhood Shabbat Service.

Please accept my apologies if I missed anyone! Your time and efforts are truly appre-ciated.

Other successful events this past year include our fundraisers, programs and social

events – Attractions Books, Challah and Honey Cake Sales, New Year’s Cards, Rada Knives, Tribute Cards, Sisterhood Shabbat, Winter/Chanukah Luncheon, Winter/Luncheon Tea at IYQ and our Movie Afternoon Social. The Board is currently plan-

ning more programs and events for all of our Temple members to enjoy and partici-pate.

At this time, I would like to welcome Joan Bierman to our Board as the new Treas-urer. She has graciously stepped forward to join our Board and bring more new ideas

to the table. I am personally grateful to her for relieving me of this task. Thank you, Joan!

I am looking forward to continuing and building on the success of Sisterhood in the upcoming year. I hope that all the women of Temple Shalom will become Sisterhood

members and join us in supporting Temple Shalom and the greater Jewish commu-nity!

Sisterhood Announcements

Please participate in our ongoing fundraiser, the TRIBUTE CARD PROGRAM. Tribute

Cards are the gift that keeps on giving! Tribute Cards simply take the place of greeting cards

while investing in your own Temple and the Jewish community. With the purchase of one or

more Tribute Cards, there is no trip to the store or wrapping of gifts. It is an ongoing fundraiser

that will greatly benefit all of us at Temple Shalom! Please refer to the flyer in this bulletin

and the Sisterhood section of the Temple’s website to support our efforts to fundraise on

behalf of Temple Shalom!

Sisterhood is also continuing its RADA Knife fundraiser. These knives are really terrific, I

have a few, and they make great hostess gifts for the holidays as well as other occasions! Sis-

terhood receives 40% of every order! We will accept orders every month, until the 20th of

the month. Anything ordered after that will be included in the next order. Please add a $5 ship-

ping charge per order to cover Sisterhood shipping expenses. There are catalogues at the Tem-

Temple Shalom Sisterhood is pleased to offer TRIBUTE CARDS…the gift that keeps on giving! It is an ongoing fundraiser that will greatly benefit all of us at Temple Shalom!

Is there an occasion or person that you would like to honor or memorialize? A Tribute Card is an easy and excellent way to honor a loved one’s memory, wish a friend a speedy recovery, rejoice in a Bar/Bat Mitzvah or Confirmation, acknowledge a grandchild’s birth, wish a couple Mazel Tov on their

wedding, anniversary, birthday or simply celebrate any simcha or occasion with a donation in their name that supports the programs and all members of Temple Shalom.

more packages of 5 cards with envelopes (no postage included) for just $10.00 that you can fill out and mail yourself whenever the need arises. These cards have blank purpose and sender lines for you to fill in to recognize any event. Please make checks payable to: Temple Shalom Sister-
