Father’s Day

By Beatrice Brown

Father’s Day is a

holiday inaugurated in the early

twentieth century to celebrate fatherhood and

male parenting. In addition, Father’s Day is

International Men’s Day.

Sonora S. Dodd was credited as the

founder of Father’s Day. She decided to hold

the first Father’s Day celebration in June

1910. It was through her relentless struggle

and firm determination that today fathers

everywhere are officially given their due

respect. Father’s Day is celebrated in over

thirty countries around the world. In the

beginning, Father’s Day was celebrate by

wearing flowers; today fathers’ are rewarded

with special gifts.

By Soleil Dent

Ladies, it’s that time of year again, Father’s Day! But

just in case you can’t quite figure out what to get dear old Dad,

here are some ideas, according to People (not the magazine,

just some students in the break room). It does not matter if

your special guy is a sports fanatic, an outdoor man, or a

techie here are some ideas for gifts that you can get him.

If Daddy is a sports fanatic, like a lot of men are, try

getting him some tickets to a basketball, football, or baseball

game; be sure to go all out and get him some really good

seats while you’re at it! If you can’t get him any tickets, try

getting him the ultimate sports package on cable!

For the outdoor man, hunting, fishing equipment, and

tools are great gift ideas. Let them get their primal, “Big Chief

Bring Fire” juices flowing with all the gear and equipment they

love!

Have a man that’s a techie? Try getting him some

really cool gadgets that light up, buzz and make big “flashies”

that he can play around with. Computer, monitoring, and audio

equipment are some things that you might want to consider

getting your Big Bad Breadwinner.

Moreover, let’s give our men a day of peace with no

kids, no noise, and a nice home cooked meal to show them

our love and

appreciation. But most

importantly, let’s give

them the love,

gratitude and respect

that he deserves on his

special day.

Katrina

By Sharon Dent

In addition to the storm it was raining and cold.

Katrina left me standing with no clothes, she ripped

through the homes, and left nothing but holes.

The people were beneath their homes, stuck with their children left alone.

But, that’s a hurricane, it comes and it goes.

I Know a Leader By Kele Jenkins

Websters describes leadership “as the ability to inspire confidence

and support among the people who are needed to achieve organizational

goals.” If this is an accurate definition, then I was fortunate and blessed to

have lived under the same roof of a leader. My father, Maurice Jenkins, was

a proven leader. He motivated through his words as well as his actions. He

is the reason I’m not only in school, but on the verge of graduation.

I’ve lost count of the times that people have come up to me and told

me what a pleasure it was for them to have served under my father. He was

a visionary in the way he prepared for battle. He would play out all possible

scenarios. As one former soldier put it, “We would not have made it back, if

it weren’t for your father.” He lead me to become a man who, in return, will

continue to lead and watch my son also become a leader.

Daddy’s Angel

Daughters are definitely daddy’s girls. When I knew that I

was going to become a father, I was really excited. Our doctor told

us our child was going to be a boy, so my wife decorated the room

blue, and I bought clothes and toys for a boy. However, we didn’t

find out until the very end that our baby was going to be a girl.

My daughter took her time to come into this world; she was a week late

arriving on August 14, 2003. Her beauty struck me like lighting. I felt like the proudest

dad in the world at that moment. When my daughter opened her big, beautiful, brown

eyes, the first person she looked at was me. She didn’t cry at first; she just was lying

down like a little diva. She looked at me as if I were the only person in the world. I fell

in love with her; she is my baby girl.

Now she is 8 years old. She is the sweetest girl I know and a bit of an artist.

Every Father’s Day, Christmas, and birthday, she comes to me with greeting cards

and presents she drew. She makes each holiday unforgettable for me because she

takes the time to craft each present. Because of her, I’m the happiest Dad. She is

my angel.

Finding a job, Is a Job!

By LaRon Roberts

I know finding a job is a

job, but here are a few pointers to help your job

search; with these tips you should be able to start

a well-designed job search. The first step is to

know your skillsets and your abilities. You will

need this to help you on your job search when you

begin to enter keywords. Second, know what kind

of job you are looking for, whether it is entry level

or experienced. You must also keep your search

organized so you can remember where you have

applied. Third, nothing is going to be given to you,

so set short term goals and long term goals. For

example, “this week, I will send out 3 resumes.”

Finally, stay encouraged. It is a competitive job

market, but ask your friends if they know of any job

openings.

Going Back to School

By: Frances Jackson

I have always wanted to continue my education and receive a

degree in business, but things have always been in my way. First there

were the children and wanting to make sure that they were well taken care

of and that someone would be home for them when they returned from

school. Then there were the finances making sure that we had enough

money to take care of the things we needed.

Every time I would decide to go back to school, I would have to quit

for some reason or another. I would encourage my children to continue

their education and put myself on the back burner. In 2006, I did go back and earn a diploma in Medical

and Health Office Technology. It felt strange being back because of the age difference, but I completed

the guidelines and finished.

It feels even stranger now because business administration is more computer based, and I am

not a computer wizard. All the students in the classes I’ve had so far are my children’s ages and it

makes me feel out of place because of it. Sometimes I feel that I am too old to be here. My memory

isn’t what it used to be, and arthritis has set in the hands and made it difficult for me to type fast as I

once could.

This is a learning experience and a difficult task, but I refuse to give up. I might be the oldest in

class, but I have the drive to continue this race until I walk across that stage and receive that degree in

my hands. Maybe I can encourage some of the younger people to stay in school

and never give up on their dreams.

You may have heard of the classical

Greek philosopher, Plato. He founded the

Academy in Athens which is considered the first institution of higher learning in the

Western World. Plato believed that the good life involved reflection and

introspection. Several thousand years later, an English poet and philosopher,

Samuel Coleridge, wrote that "but there is one art, of which every [person] should

be master, the art of Reflection." He went on to write, "if you are not a thinking [person], to what

purpose are you a [person] at all?" While at Virginia College, you can reflect upon where you want to be

in five, ten or twenty years from now. Remember, it is those small, everyday habits that most generally

will lead you to habits of success through life.

On another note, please join me in welcoming our new Campus President, Paul Wehrum. Mr.

Wehrum is well experienced, having been a campus president at two other institutions. He is coming

from Columbia, South Carolina, and is looking forward to living in Augusta and most importantly, looking

forward to meeting each student. - P a u l L u n d , Academic Dean

Welcome Burgundy Scrubs! By Soleil Dent

VC welcomes the new Medical Office Administration (MOA)

program. The difference between the MOA and Medical Office

Management (MOM) is that with MOA it’s all administration no clinical

work, which is great for students who are not that comfortable with

patient contact. MOA has some medical classes such as Medical Law

and Ethics, Anatomy and Physiology, but the rest are business classes.

MOA also will gain Microsoft experience, medical transcription

knowledge and learn how to process computerized medical records.

Right now, of all the medical programs, the Medical Assistant

(MA) is the largest. An MA can draw blood, assist in minor procedures

and do back office work such as insurance claims and charts. Sharon

Scott, Program Director for the Allied Health programs, stated that the

goal is to differentiate the two programs by bringing in the MOA program.

Hopefully that will make the job competition a little easier.

Becoming certified is one of

Summer is time for fun in the sun. As students, we only have one week out before the next

quarter begins. Here is an idea for a local vacation that not many people know about. The place is

called Graystone Ranch Wildlife Education Center. This ranch is on MacManus Road off of Highway

56 in Hephzibah, Georgia ,and admission is only $10. The camp is open from 10 am until midnight.

This ranch includes many activities, from a beach to a place to fish. It is awesome because it

is only 15 minutes away from Virginia College. There are many activities for the whole family. Visitors can go for a day or

they can as long as you like.

For more information visit www.graystoneranch.com or call (706) 360-0808. Our break is short but our children still

want the summer fun experience. Remember to drink plenty of fluids and to wear sunscreen. Have a great summer!!

Stay Safe This Summer

Summer is here! Summer is a fun time to spend with family and friends. However, it can be

dangerous if the precautions for heat and water safety are not put into practice. The following tips are

cool fluids each hour. Stay in a shaded

area. If at all possible try to stay indoors,

preferably in a air-conditioned space.

Avoid sun damage to skin by using

sunblock is Use common sense!

Water Safety:

Swim in designated areas supervised

by lifeguards, and always swim with a

buddy.

Never leave a young child unattended

near water, and do not trust a child’s

life to another child.

Have young children or inexperienced

swimmers wear U.S. Coast

Guard-approved life jackets.

Juneteenth is the oldest known celebration commemorating the end of slavery in

the United States. It was 1865 on June 19th that the Union soldiers, led by Major General

Gordon Granger, landed at Galveston, Texas, with the news that the war had ended and

that the enslaved were now free. Note that this was two and a half years after President Lincoln’s Emancipation

Proclamation, which had become official January 1, 1863. The Emancipation Proclamation had little impact on

Texans due to the minimal number of union troops to enforce the new executive order.

Today, Juneteenth is celebrated by festivities and foods which include rodeos, fishing, barbecuing, and

baseball. Certain foods became popular such as strawberry soda pop. Barbecuing is popular because celebrants

believe that they can share in the spirit and aromas that their ancestors, the newly emancipated African

Americans, would have experienced during their ceremonies. The barbecue pit is often used as the center of

attention at Juneteenth celebrations.

June 19th was coined “Juneteenth “and grew with more participation from descendants. The Juneteenth

celebration was a time for reassuring each other. Juneteenth continued to be highly revered in Texas decades

later, with many former slaves and decedents making an annual pilgrimage back to Galveston on this date.

Last year in Georgia, over 60,000

students did not graduate. I wanted to

make a difference in our students’ futures

so I have joined in with the We Live to

Read Campaign to help promote reading

and literacy in Augusta. I am asking you

to also join me, April Johnson (MOM

Program) and the Co-Founder and

President of We Live Campaign, Tyrice Lollis, captained our

charge for more reading and to reduce the number of

students who are dropping out of school.

I wanted to start by collecting books from

kindergarten through college levels. It’s time to donate to

make a difference. You can reach out and touch a life. There

are several ways you can help.

Learn more about the campaign at http://

www.welivecampaign.org or by emailing to

[email protected] or donate on campus by your

bringing books to the collection spot set up in the

library.

June’s Quote: “My father always told me to find a job that you love and

you will never have to work a day in your life”.—Jim Fox

Finding a job in life can sometimes be very stressful, especially under the pressure of responsibilities or other life requirements. Performing a job that one hates or dislikes is where the "work" comes into existence because one has to force one's self into completion of the job. Performing jobs that one loves and enjoy bring excitement, meaning that every task is completed with enjoyment therefore, the task of work is eliminated. To me, this task is helping others in a variety of factors and forms. When one enjoys and loves life, this means that all elements of life are not "work" but love, so no matter what I am doing I continue to find a place of love in it.

July’s Quote:

“If our country is worth dying for in time of war let us resolve that it is

truly worth living for in time of peace.” ~Hamilton Fish
