CelluliteWhat is cellulite?

90% of woman have cellulite. Cellulite is the lumpy substance resembling cottage cheese that is commonly found on the thighs, stomach, and buttocks. There are three layers of fat- the bottom two are where calories are stored as fat cells as a “reserve”. The subcutaneous is the top layer. The appearance of cellulite is caused by the fat cells in women’s bodies and the connective tissue that holds the fat in place in this layer. Since this connective tissue is generally inflexible and honeycomb-shaped, the fat bulges out through the connective tissue in lumps, causing the dimpling effect.

The connective tissue in men is structured differently, which makes it less much likely for men to develop cellulite.

Genetics also plays a major factor in the amount of cellulite one will develop. In general, if your mother had cellulite, so will you. The amount of cellulite your mother had may also indicate the amount of cellulite you may develop. Stress, poor circulation, high fluid retention, smoking, a poor diet, and a lack of exercise can all contribute to the development of cellulite

7

Exercise

One of the surefire ways to reduce the appearance of cellulite is to stay in shape. Experts recommend people get daily cardiovascular exercise combined with two to three strength-training sessions a week in order to combat cellulite. Combining cardio and strength training will help you shed fat and build muscle. Any cardiovascular exercises are helpful, though some good ones to consider include jogging, walking, cycling, and swimming. Swimming is particularly good since it is a total body workout. Cardiovascular exercises will help improve circulation and burn away excess fat. It’s best to start slow and within reasonable limits with regards to cardio, particularly if you’re just starting an exercise program.

Diet

Having a healthy diet will help decrease fat and help reduce the appearance of cellulite. Since cellulite affects people who are of all weights and body types--from overweight to slim--anything one can do to cut body fat will help reduce cellulite. One thing to consider is fluid retention. Any excess fluid in the body will have a tendency to gravitate to those parts of the body, causing swelling. Reducing salt intake and drinking eight glasses of water a day should help deal with this problem.

The following foods are considered beneficial for an anti-cellulite diet:• Apples • Asparagus • Avocado • Bananas • Beans • Bell peppers • Blackberries • Blueberries • Bran and oat cereals • Carrots

• Celery • Cherries • Chicken • Cranberries • Cucumber • Eggs • Grapefruit • Low-fat dairy products • Mangos

Summer Tantastic IdeasThe day before your session…

The day of your session…

• Your skin must be completely free of any moisturiser, makeup, deodorant or perfumes.• Wear loose fitted, darker clothing for after your tan.• Wear jandles.

9

After tan care…

Achieve a healthy tan this summer - extend the life of your sunless tan by using these tips.

• Drink lots of water, keep hydrated from inside out.• Avoid wetting your skin or activities that will cause excessive sweating between the tanning and showering phase.• You may shower after 3-8 hours.• After showering, pat dry your skin.• Moisturise daily.• The use of hot baths, chlorinated pools and spas will reduce the life of your tan.

Sunless tan does not provide any sun protection and does not contain sunscreen.

Skin Care in the 21st Century – Sunscreens.

Since the middle of the 80’s, fair skinned people have been much more aware of the need to protect their skins against the harmful effects of too much sunlight. This is a very good principle, but there have been some very unsettling surprises. Logically we all tend to think that the higher the factor of the sunscreen, the better the protection against ageing and skin cancer it is. Even better if it is waterproof. Then we really do not have to worry too much. We think all of this must be true when we have been in the sun for a long time, and escaped without burning. This will convince most of us that we have done all that is necessary to prevent damage to our skins and the eventual cancer. Unfortunately the truth seems to be a little different. Even though sunscreens absorb or reflect some of the energy of the damaging ultra-violet light of the sun, a fair amount still gets through into the skin. Over many years, even this mild exposure will cause damage to the layers of skin resulting in a thin, wrinkled skin, with dilated blood vessels, blotchy pigmented spots and a frail, rough surface. Such a skin cannot easily resist injury or infection and it develops skin cancer very easily. This is probably why British scientists found that even in places where people used sunscreens very faithfully, the numbers of skin cancers did not drop as much as would have been expected. A very odd fact. What could the reason be ? The truth is that skin cancer is caused by molecules known as free radicals causing damage to the genes of the cells. The DNA or genetic code is damaged. The irony of it all is that the most common and destructive free radical comes from oxygen. Man cannot live without it, but when ultraviolet light breaks the O2 molecule into two single molecules of oxygen, they do to DNA what the sea air does to our cars : Rust ! Rust in a car is like cancer, it does not stop if neglected. It is the same in skin.

What then can possibly be done ?

The solution took a brilliant mind like Dr. Des Fernandes to put “anti-rust”, or more accurately anti-oxidant vitamins into Environ®’s RAD sunscreen. Suddenly the free radicals can be neutralised before they have a chance to do damage. Clearly this completes the picture in proper prevention of skin cancer. Not only that, but ageing will slow down and damage caused by the sun will be minimised with proper use of the Environ® RAD sunscreen. All sunscreens need re-application if one spends a long time in the sun, and definitely after swimming. The Americans are now so serious about this, that the Food and Drug Administration is going to ban the word Waterproof on sunscreens. The word Waterproof actually prevents people from reapplying their sunscreens after swimming. A “fatal” mistake. The obsession with using the highest Factor of screen is a logical one because the higher factor

10

is automatically equated with better protection. The factor of a sunscreen merely refers to the length of time one will be able to longer tolerate the sun before burning, compared to the time without protection. It cannot in any way tell us how well it will protect us against cancer. In fact it would appear that without sufficient anti-oxidant vitamins, it might even add to the risk of more skin cancer by encouraging us to stay in the sun for longer. So, by all means go out into our lovely climate, but play by the rules : Between 11 & 3 duck under a tree. Be sun wise, anti-oxidize ! Re-apply, re-apply and re-apply.

The Secret of Great Skin

Love Retinoids

Hollywood starlet Naomi Watts knows the power of vitamin A derivatives. Her beauty regime varies with the seasons but her daily routine stays the same. Naomi knows that while the retinoids won’t deliver instant results as they need at least three to six months to prove themselves, science has shown they can definitely turn back the hands of time with a mild peeling effect that smooth’s out lines and wrinkles, evens skin tone, stimulates collagen and helps reverse sun damage.

Naomi uses Environ. The AVST cream works in progressive strengths from one up to five. Naomi recommends: Environ AVST Moisturiser from $80.00
