The Lord appeared to Abraham by the terebinth of Mamre.

(Genesis 18.1) I have always been intrigued by the terebinth of Mamre. Firstly, the landscape must be very deso-late when you can describe a location by a single tree! Secondly, I imagine that in the desert people were drawn to, and captivated by the cool shade provided by a tree such as a terebinth. Abraham and his family had camped near the shade of that tree and from that place they offered hospitality to visitors. And the rest is history….. Sarai and Abraham were blessed with a child and had prog-eny that would fulfill God’s promise to him that your descendants will be as numerous as the stars… These summer days let us imitate Abraham and Sarai and take time to sit under our “terebinth of Mamre.” Relax at a baby pool in the yard, sit on the porch with a lemonade or read a book in an air conditioned room. Enjoy summer’s relaxed schedule by sleeping later or taking extra time to pray your morning prayers. God visits us in the summer!

Father Mark Mertes, Pastor

Adoration Will Resume Tuesday, September 3

Come spend time with Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament on Tuesdays, beginning September 3 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. We need at least 2-3 per-sons per hour for two reasons: 1) Our Lord is not left alone; 2) the personal safety of adorers. To confirm your time with Christ, please call the par-ish office, 913-299-3370. We also welcome those who are willing to serve as substitutes if someone cannot keep their scheduled hour.

Baptisms for Infants and Children

Schedule Change For your convenience in planning your baby’s bap-tism, baptisms in English will now be offered on the 3rd Saturday of each month at 11 a.m. Please call Theresa Smith, 913-299-3370, to register your child for baptism. First time parents are also asked to attend a baptism preparation class. When choosing godparents, please remember that can-on law requires a godparent to be over the age of 16, to be confirmed, married in the Church if mar-ried and practicing the faith. Only one godparent is needed, but you may have one man and one woman that fit the requirements for godparents.

Interested in Becoming Catholic?

Please join us for Inquiry Nights, Tuesday, August 6 and Tuesday, September 3

at 7 p.m. in the rectory. These informal evenings are a time to ask ques-tions about the Church and the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) process. Please contact Theresa Smith, [email protected] or 913-299-3370 for details. RCIA classes begin Tuesday, September 10 at 6:30 pm in the school library. We hope and pray you will become a member of our Church family and share in the graces of the sac-raments and the Mass. God bless you!

Thank you! *Stocking the Shelves—Country Store St. Anthony Circle is again sponsoring the “Country Store” at the Ice Cream Social on Sep-tember 21. Please note that all items will sell for $10-15. All items must be new and not worn, faded or soiled. Home canned goods, gar-den fruits and vegetables really add to the theme. Please bring items to the parish office, the Early Education Center or to the Social. *VOLUNTEER—We need everyone to help!

We welcome all children who attend local public schools. Baptism Certificates are required for children who were not baptized at St. Patrick Church. Please note: If you are not a registered member of St. Patrick Church or are registered at another parish, it is required that you have a Letter of Permission on church letterhead from your pastor to Betty Battson, DRE, which states the pastor gives permission for your child to take Religious Education classes at St. Patrick’s. This letter must be received at time of enrollment.

Please pray for the repose of the soul of Mary Mulich. Our prayers and sympathy are offered to her family and friends.

Employment Opportunities St. Patrick Catholic School

1) St. Patrick Catholic School has an opening for a part-time day custodian. Hours are from 9 am—1:30 pm when school is in session. 2) St. Patrick Catholic School has an opening for a part-time receptionist at the Early Education Cen-ter from 7:30 am-10:30 am when school is in ses-sion. Please apply at www.archkck.org for either position. For more information on either position, please contact [email protected].

Catholic Charities Volunteer Opportunity Direct assistance is provided to those living in ru-ral, outlying areas through our two Mobile Re-source buses. Each bus is equipped with basic essentials including food and clothing. Catholic Charities is seeking volunteers to drive our buses to assigned locations on either Tuesday or Wednesday. A CDL is not required. For additional information, please contact Cari Olberding at 913-433-2104 or [email protected].

Reporting Suspected Abuse The Archdiocese remains committed to investigat-ing any allegation of abuse of a minor made against any member of the clergy or any church employee or volunteer — no matter the age of the incident or the current age of the victim. Indi-viduals are encouraged to call the confidential report line at (913) 647-3051 (or visit archkck.org/reportabuse) to make a report to Jan Saylor, arch-diocesan report investigator, and to call law en-forcement directly. If a child or vulnerable adult is in immediate danger, call 911.

Training is required before volunteering with children at the parish or school.

To volunteer with children in the parish or school, you must first attend a Virtus “Protecting God’s Children” session and pass a background check. Schedule and training locations can be found at www.virtusonline.org. Attended Virtus? Your ac-count must remain current with assigned articles. Contact Betty Ann Battson, Virtus Coordinator, 299-3728 or [email protected].

Donor Advised Funds Charitable donations may be more complicated under the tax law changes implemented in 2017. Many CPAs and tax attorneys recommend a strat-egy of ‘bundling’ deductible gifts into alternate years. One way to bundle charitable gifts, accord-ing to your Catholic values, is through a Donor Advised Fund (DAF) with the Catholic Foundation of Northeast Kansas. More information is availa-ble at www.cfnek.org/daf or call 913-647-3062.
