From desk of Fr. Mark Mertes, Pastor … You have approached Mount Zion and the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and

countless angels in festal gathering.… (Hebrews 12.22)

Our goal in our everyday lives is to get glimps-es of what it is like to live in the heavenly Jerusa-lem. Even amid the challenges and difficulties of our day the Holy Spirit wants to illuminate our minds so that we can know that we are surround-ed by spiritual beings and helpers. Each moment we live is a mysterious unfolding of God’s love. In our life of sacraments we take ordinary things like bread and wine, water and oil, and allow them to point us to God present among us. Surprisingly, one of the challenges to ap-proaching life as a mystery is our technology. I recommend a book called The Tech-Wise Fami-ly—Everyday Steps for Putting Technology in Its Proper Place by Andy Crouch, 2017, Baker Books. I found it very helpful as he reflects on how our technology is taking us away from the mystery of the present moment. By encouraging families to be open and transparent, to create their own mu-sic and to engage one another in conversation, he points us back to God’s mysterious love that is always present. Stewardship and Today’s Readings Today’s First Reading captures one of the key ele-ments of stewardship: be humble, and put the needs of others before our own needs. If we are good stewards, we choose to let others be more important; we are not controlling; we support oth-ers in any way that they require. Are you willing to let God take charge of your life? That’s what it means to be a steward, and that is the message Jesus gives us over and over throughout Scripture. Memorial Service for Victims of Abortion Saturday, Sept 14, 1-2:30 pm at Gate of Heaven Catholic Cemetery, 126th St. & Parallel. Mass of Innocents Sunday, September 29, 1 pm

Holy Spirit Parish, Overland Park Archbishop Joseph F. Naumann will celebrate a commemorative Mass for all children lost during pregnancy or in early infancy. This Mass gives parents, grandparents, siblings, or other loved ones the opportunity to receive consolation, whether the loss was recent or many years ago. Though you may not have personally experienced this kind of loss, you are invited to come and sup-port those who have through your prayers and presence.
