Student Data Privacy Laws

Student data privacy is an issue that concerns policy makers, parents, school administrators, technology leaders, and vendors. The more schools adopt online cloud services for educational purposes, privacy issues will only be more pressing.

How do schools ensure student data privacy while encouraging the use of innovative technologies?1 Understand the laws.

The existing legislation can seem a bit like privacy alphabet soup:

Regulates the release of personally identifiable information and education records, and includes

parental rights regarding notification of the release of records, as well as the right to review,

inspect, and amend such records.

Pertains to web sites and online services that seek to collect information about or from students under 13 years of age. It specifies language that should be in the privacy policy of the service, as well as when the service must have parental consent to

collect the information.

Establishes requirements related to parental notification and opt-out option when collecting information from students that may be used for

marketing purposes.

Includes both privacy and security requirements regarding health related information.

Create Trust in Your School Community

“Protecting confidential and sensitive student data must be a priority for everyone in the school district. Not only is the law, but it is the responsibility of the adults in whom parents entrust their children. And ensuring data security is the best first step to ensuring student privacy.”− Bob Moore, Founder, RJM Strategies LLC
