team goodwill

The word Team is defined by Wikipedia as “a group of people linked in a common purpose. A team conducts tasks that are high in complexity and have many interdependent subtasks.” This definition is a perfect description of Goodwill Industries of Northeastern PA.

Working together in a highly complex environment, our staff conducts many tasks interdependent of each other to

meet Goodwill’s mission. Our Retail Team employs many of the participants from the Employment Services Team. Our Day Center Team works closely with our Community Living Team to provide program service during each day. Our Administrative Team coaches and controls the complexity so that each subtask is completed to ensure Goodwill is a winning team.

As we maintain our focus on mission services our team continues to seek ways to win. Over the past year, Team Goodwill has seen great growth and strength. • We opened two donation centers, a recycling warehouse and a new store

in Hanover Township• S.E.A.L. (Social Emotional And Learning) added many new participants • Employment Services doubled the individuals placed in competitive jobs• 111 Girl Scouts conducted a donation drive collecting over 11,000 pounds of clothing

Team Goodwill has just completed a winning season and will continue to train hard and provide the best services to each of our program participants. We would also like to thank you for being one of our biggest fans. Your continued support allows us to deliver our mission and advance the social and economic well-being of all the players.

Green Ridge Health Care Center, located in Scranton, is a new, state-of-the-art skilled nursing care facility, providing rehabilitation for residents requiring short term therapy. The Center provides physical, occupational and speech therapy allowing patients to reach their highest physical and functional potential.

Green Ridge Health Care Center is a valuable asset to Goodwill’s vocational team. They have opened their doors to employ individuals in our Vocational Program and have allowed Goodwill to utilize their facility to conduct community assessments for individuals who may have an interest in the health care field. This partnership has allowed Goodwill to successfully meet

our mission of providing competitive employment for individuals who are intellectually and developmentally disabled.

For over five years, Kim Drank, Manager of the Dietary Department, has played a lead role in assisting and guiding our clients through their assignments. Kim is an open minded leader and very willing to tailor duties and responsibilities of the job around the client’s skill level ensuring they are given every opportunity to succeed.

Green Ridge Health Care Center believes in the ability of the individuals Goodwill serves and is committed to helping them achieve more each year.

Justin Coy joined our Montrose Day Program in 2013. His ambition and desire to improve himself was evident from the very beginning. Although a little anxious to start working, he was very participative in group activities. This experience was initially bittersweet for Justin. He was excited but yet nervous to begin working and embark on this next stage of life. But again Justin’s excitement conquered his anxiety and he began the Job Options program by working at Price Chopper as a grocery and cart handler. Justin would eagerly await those four hours each week where he could be independent and constructive within his community.

With the help of his Job Coach who guided and directed him through various tasks, Justin gained skills and was given expanded responsibilities, and through his dedication and vigilance, Justin earned a part-time job at Price Chopper.

Today Justin is still a participant in our Day Program and continues to be successful in his job at Price Chopper in Montrose. He is trustworthy, dependable, attentive and an impeccable manifestation of hard work and diligence. We think it’s safe to say that Justin Coy is “just incredible.”

If anyone were to ask what do Steve Miller, Pearl Jam, Reba McEntire and Tchaikovsi have in common, you may say they all sing. You’d say that if you weren’t employed at Goodwill’s Adult Day Center in Dickson City. Because if you asked any of the staff members there what those four talented musicians had in common they would say that it was Darren Piczon.

Darren is a long time member of our Adult Day Center and participant in our Supportive Employment program. He is our official “keeper of the music” and anytime you see Darren he is playing his music and smiling. Our staff has seen his growth and maturity over the years. In the past Darren shielded himself and would not share with the world. But as time went on Darren let his light shine bright and looks forward to working in our store, socializing with staff and customers,

unintentionally encouraging them to let their light shine. He has grown and uses exercise to support his physical well-being. His positive outlook on life has enabled him to develop wonderful relationships with the Day Center staff, other clients and retail store staff.

Although it may be difficult for a musical connoisseur like Darren to choose, he declares Styx’ “Come Sail Away” as his favorite song. He displays his patriotism each day at noon by listening to the National Anthem played on Froggy 101, then begins to work on his job duties and responsibilities. While on the list of things Darren loves, we should include going out and eating with his twin brother Bradley and their parents, visiting Philadelphia, and last but not least, he loves being a part of Goodwill Industries almost as much as we love and feel privileged to have him.

Mark Kivler He is an unconditional giver and has the ability to make friends easily through his compassion and giving spirit.

Mark Kivler has resided at one of Goodwill’s Community Living Homes since August 2013. He’s had a challenging start, but through perseverance and diligence he has overcome many personal hurdles, earned his independence, and now truly enjoys living on his own.

Mark’s triumphs don’t come without their scars. Earlier this year he suffered a fall which resulted in a major surgery and a substantial period of recovery. Despite his woes Mark always seemed to find the strength to converse, smile and joke with whomever came to stop by. His optimistic personality is contagious. He is an unconditional giver and has the ability to make friends easily through his compassion and giving spirit.

He is known as the man who would drop everything to help a friend in need and throughout the community people know him by name and look forward to his visits.

Mark is a huge fan of wrestling shows, Star Wars and the band “KISS.” His favorite pastime is watching a movie from his vast collection of DVD’s. The greatest thing that almost everyone who knows Mark understands is revealed in his answer when asked, what he likes best about living with Goodwill, Mark simply replies, “My friends.”

Johnathan Demaio is a participant in this program and also Goodwill’s Supported Employment program.

Johnathan works part-time at both the Monroe County CareerLink and McDonald’s in Stroudsburg. In April, he was named Employee of the Month at McDonald’s for going above and beyond for the restaurant and staff, for his positive attitude and his kindness. The Greater Pocono

Chamber of Commerce honored Johnathan by naming him the 2015 Youth Appreciation Day Award winner. Johnathan loves helping others and is always looking for ways to make his community better.

Johnathan spends much of his free time practicing and competing in three Special Olympics teams, floor hockey, soccer and basketball, where he is captain.

As a young man Johnathan has accomplished many goals and continues to set new ones to challenge himself further in life.

Michael Durkin has come a long way since Goodwill Industries first met him eight years ago. He began in the vocational program as a young high school student, who was unsure of the whole meaning and process of “transition” which everyone around him was talking about. But over time, that’s exactly what Michael did. He transitioned from a young immature student, to a grown man with excellent work ethics.

Michael now works in the dietary department at Green Ridge Health Care Center as a Dietary Aide. His duties include helping in the kitchen, cleaning tables in the cafeteria after lunch, and setting up for dinner. If anyone would have asked Mrs. Durkin or his Job Coach eight years ago if Michael could

reach this level, they would have both told you “Yes”. That is because they saw his potential and drive to succeed. During this transition there were many challenges but Michael’s determination to succeed and his willingness to work hard allowed him to reach many goals. As Goodwill’s Job Coaches worked with Michael he learned different tasks and developed the skills to complete them in a timely manner. Michael’s work ethic never failed and his drive to become the best person he could has always been evident.

Goodwill has never stopped encouraging Michael to learn and experience new events. We are confident Michael will continue to push forward along life’s path to becoming an independent young man.
