The K to 12 Curriculum

As of 02/17/14 Special ManCom Meeting on SHS Preparations. For DEPED USE ONLYAn understanding of the development PROCESS of the K to 12 curriculum is important for decision-making of actors on the ground. The best curricula is CONTEXTUALIZED by those implementing it.Presented today is the curriculum which will be implemented in schools

For DEPED USE ONLYPhilosophical and legal bases: the K to 12 curriculum built on previous reform initiativesNature and needs of the learnerLearner-centeredNeeds of the national and global communityThe Curriculum is contextualized so that children develop where they are and are given meaningful opportunities where they are.The K to 12 curriculum addresses national and global needsIs one strategy to reduce poverty. One of the main reasons we extended 2 years: the Philippines is behind in the international scene. Consistent with ASEAN 2015 wherein countries must have a mutually acceptable educational system that is at par with the ASEAN Qualifications Reference Framework (AQRF)Implementation requires striking a balance between reality and idealism.Leapfrog: Looking at the entire K to 12, we need 12 years to transform. But by starting with Grade 1 and Grade 7, we are cutting half the time, working on a 6-year vantage point.

For DEPED USE ONLYA strong curriculum support system is needed to ensure that the goal to produce holistically-developed Filipinos with 21st century skills is achieved. Some questions to consider for an effective curriculum support system:What kind of teachers are needed? Budget for materials, facilities, and equipment?Which industries in the community should be included?3As of 02/17/14 Special ManCom Meeting on SHS Preparations. For DEPED USE ONLY

The K to 12 Philippine Basic Education Curriculum FrameworkAs of 02/17/14 Special ManCom Meeting on SHS Preparations. For DEPED USE ONLYK to 12 curriculum is not reinvented. Looks much like RBEC but we made the wheel a little bigger by spreading out the competencies (e.g.Health and PE being spread out over the 12 years)K to10 curriculum- spiral; SHS curriculum- disciplinalEducation is everybodys business. The curriculum is not going to happen in a bubble. It has to happen in relation to the family, with the barangay, etc. 4As of 02/17/14 Special ManCom Meeting on SHS Preparations. For DEPED USE ONLYFeatures of the K to 12 CurriculumDEPARTMENT OF EDUCATIONlearner-centered, inclusive and research-basedculture-responsive and culture-sensitive, integrative and contextualized, relevant and responsivestandard and competence based, seamless, decongestedflexible, ICT-based, and globalAs of 02/17/14 Special ManCom Meeting on SHS Preparations. For DEPED USE ONLYAll these are catch-phrases from the law.

The curriculum strikes a BALANCE between the ideal, the meaningful, the logistically feasible and allows for varied ways of delivery.EVERY SCHOOL must be a ONE STOP SHOP that includes Indigenous people, Muslim learners and learners with Special Needs. It uses what was proven and converts it to standards and competencies so that K-3 is DIRECTLY RELEVANT to 4-6, 4-6 directly relevant to 7-10, 7-10 to 11-12.It is also built around the needs of the learner and the community in all aspects.5As of 02/17/14 Special ManCom Meeting on SHS Preparations. Curriculum Exits DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATIONAs of 02/17/14 Special ManCom Meeting on SHS Preparations. For DEPED USE ONLY4 Exits: Either children move on to higher education, employment, entrepreneurship, mid-level skills developmentIts about developing the 21st century skills to prepare the learners for the four exits. The 21st century skills are:Information, Media, and Technology SkillsLearning and Innovation SkillsCommunication SkillsLife and Career Skills6As of 02/17/14 Special ManCom Meeting on SHS Preparations. Curriculum Exits DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATIONVisual and information literaciesMedia literacyBasic, scientific, economic and technological literacies and multicultural literacyGlobal awarenessCreativity and curiosityCritical thinking problem solving skillsRisk takingCollaboration and interpersonal skillsFlexibility and adaptabilityInitiative and self-directionSocial and cross-cultural skillsProductivity and accountabilityLeadership and responsibilityEthical, moral and spiritual valuesAs of 02/17/14 Special ManCom Meeting on SHS Preparations. For DEPED USE ONLYAll these skills are embedded in the curriculum. The skills are developed bit by bit through the learning competencies and performance standards of all the different subjects.Above is our example7As of 02/17/14 Special ManCom Meeting on SHS Preparations. For DEPED USE ONLYIn K-3, the childs dominant language is used as the language of learning. Mother Tongue-Based Multilingual Education (MTB-MLE)DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATIONThe learners retain their ethnic identity, culture, heritage and values.Children learn better and are more active in class and learn a second language even faster when they are first taught in a language they understand. Filipino and English language proficiency is developed from K-3 but very gradually.Mother Tongue is used in instruction and learning materials of other learning areas. As of 02/17/14 Special ManCom Meeting on SHS Preparations. For DEPED USE ONLYThe next four slides show salient features of the K to 12 Basic Education ProgramMother tongue = the childs dominant languageThe field must be able to determine the real language of the child, not the ideal language. MTB-MLE is not the same as bilingual education. In MTB-MLE, during K-3, the child is taught in his/her dominant languageAs of the moment, learners materials have been written in 19 languages. A by-product of learning in ones mother tongue: children retain their ethnic identity, culture, heritage and values (e.g. how value systems are embedded in language)

8As of 02/17/14 Special ManCom Meeting on SHS Preparations. For DEPED USE ONLYTechnology and Livelihood Education and the Technical Vocational TrackDEPARTMENT OF EDUCATIONExploratory at Grades 7 and 8Given the opportunity to explore from a maximum of 4 TLE mini courses for each levelTaught five basic competencies common to all TLE coursesLearners may earn the Certificate of Competency (COC) in Grade 9 and the National Certificate I/II (NC I/II) in Grades 9 and 10The learner may opt to take the Technical Vocational Livelihood Track in Grades 11 and 12 to continue the TLE specialization taken in Grades 9 and 10. This enables him to get an NC II.TLE in Junior High SchoolAs of 02/17/14 Special ManCom Meeting on SHS Preparations. For DEPED USE ONLYTLE is another featureG 7-8 very important because the children will learn the 5 common competencies during this timeHopefully they will find their inclinations and will have decided by grade 9 if they will go for the academic trackSchools coordinate with TESDA to develop courses.9As of 02/17/14 Special ManCom Meeting on SHS Preparations. For DEPED USE ONLYBasic concepts/general concepts are first learned.Spiralling of ContentDEPARTMENT OF EDUCATIONThis also allows learners to learn topics and skills appropriate to their developmental and cognitive stages.More complex and sophisticated versions of the basic/general concepts are then rediscovered in the succeeding grades. This strengthens retention and enhances mastery of topics and skills as they are revisited and consolidated time and again. As of 02/17/14 Special ManCom Meeting on SHS Preparations. For DEPED USE ONLY3rd is the spiralling of content and competenciesBasic Complex not the other way aroundIterate content over time so that children dont just learn for the examChildren learn better when things are done frequently and over timeSpiral Disciplinal: the skills in lower grades are built in increasing degree of complexity in the upper grades and are again tackled as a particular discipline in SHS.

This is what needs some preparation and strategizing. It involves asking questions like How many teachers will need scholarships to make these courses happen?

For DEPED USE ONLYCore Subjects have the same content and same competencies.Contextualized subjects in the tracks have different content but the same competencies. For ex. English for Academic and Professional Purposes is different on the business side as compared to the academic side. If ones in business, the English used is more on communication side. If ones on the higher ed track, the English used is more for research, etc. In other words, its still English but the content is just different. Were learning competencies using different content. Remember how we said that children are still too young to decide on their careers? With this, we are giving the children a chance to change their minds. Filipino is Filipino wherever you apply it. Research is research wherever you apply it. Kung ginawa nating specialized lahat, we are not cutting the child some slack. There are many who just want specialized tracks, but we are not producing factory workers. Were not developing dressmakers. We are developing critical thinkers who can do dresses. Its not the other way around. Were not tech-vocalizing education, we are adding tech-voc to high school.Specialization subjects in the tracks have different content and different competencies.29As of 02/17/14 Special ManCom Meeting on SHS Preparations. Reason: SHS is the stage where a lot of teenage pregnancies and adolescent reporductive health issues are at its peak. There is a need to guide the learners througout this stage.

Whats signifcant in this strand is the introduction of business ethics and social responsibility.
