PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Like July that has come and gone, the following months will past just as quickly. Now that our annual fundraiser is done, meetings for the annual Xmas parade are already underway. Our key committee members know the logistics that make our parade seem like it’s effortlessly executed. Every year some form of club retreat is led in such a formal way when all it takes is the Club Evaluation Survey conducted by Lion Ken made so easy now that we know what action steps need to be taken to

improve our club. The chairman a/o members of a project or committee are responsible to carry this through and simple things that pertain to our members can be suggested for improvement at any time. We’ve just inducted Lion Jeanne Alices, who is now an official Lion and has already participated in a number of activities. Possibly she and Lion Mike Chisick can conduct or have someone speak to us on wise banking investments or how to identify fraudulent investments. Many seem to have speakers or activities of interest lined up. Let’s act upon it to make this a speakers waiting in line year. HLF trustee, Lion Selvin Chin-Chance, from Koko Head LC, has already given us the progress that the foundation is making and hopefully one day we can all visit the Eye Bank and learn what it does and what is involved. Two strenuous activities taken on this past month were the Diamond Head Hike w/ the IYC and the planting of trees at

Kalama Valley Park. Lion CF lead the pack with his walk up DH and he and fellow senior Lions from the other clubs, who made the trek, give me the motivation and incentive to keep up with them. Lion Peggy and Lion Ron really gave us a workout at the tree planting. No matter where a hole was dug, all we hit was bedrock! There’s always something learned with each new experience. Thanks to those who supported and helped at the IYC Farewell Dinner. You didn’t know what you were in for when I asked for help, did you? I even had the big shots, PDG Merv and PID Mel Nakamura working the lines. Thanks to all! Come to the Breakfast Appreciation Dinner on Aug 3 and invite anyone who helped to make our Pancake Breakfast a success. Wake up early to help at the Heart Walk on Aug 11 and do the walk, too, if you’re up to it.

August 2012 Ka Leo O Hawaii Kai Page 2 I’m still learning so please help me live up to the expectations of the past predecessors, who have done so much for the club. ````````````````````````````````` I don’t believe you have to be better than everyone else. Ukulele Lesson Submitted by Dennis Ching

I initially asked Lion Cynthia Chun if the International Youth Campers would like to learn how to play an ukulele. Upon receiving a positive response, we had to find a location for the lesson. The Pagoda Hotel, where the campers were staying had no room available, so I found a room at the First Chinese Church. The church was within walking distance from the hotel, but the group caught The Bus. The First Chinese Church provided all the ukuleles and also lunch and drinks for the group.

The youths were taught a Hawaiian song by Pastor Kekapa Lee and then given a 45 minute lesson on ukulele picking by myself. They were told that they had to memorize the song, Ode to Joy, for their farewell dinner, which they succeeded in doing. They did a great job.

21st Annual Lunalilo Home Golf Tournament

Story submitted by Ken Nishibun On Friday, July 20, 2012 Tommy Chun, Al Hayashibara, and Ken Nishibun joined over one hundred and twenty other golfers at the 21st Annual Lunalilo Home Golf Tournament. This annual event helps support those kapuna (elderly) at Lunalilo Home who are indigent, infirmed, need assistance in their personal care needs and who have insufficient funds to pay the regular fees for their residency at the Home. Lunalilo Home has been serving poor, indigent, elderly Hawaiians for 128 years. Located in Hawaii Kai, the Home was established by King Lunalilo, the first elected Monarch and the last of the Kamehameha line to rule. The Home is a legacy to the people he loved and whose future and welfare he wanted to assure. It provides residential care for kapuna, Adult Day Care, delivered meals for the elderly, and respite services. The Hawaii Kai Lions Club contributed $500.00 to Lunalilo Home to sponsor a team. The Golf Tournament was a tremendous success generating a net total of $60,000. The funds will go a long way in helping to preserve the individual dignity of the kapuna at Lunalilo Home.

International Youth Camp – Diamond Head Hike

Story submitted by Scott Sakata

Nine Lions from Hawaii Kai, along with 4 invited guests and other lions from Koko Head, Kaimuki and Diamond Head, waited for the international youths to arrive. Upon their arrival, all of the Lions lined up near the Diamond Head sign to greet them. After the group photo, the youths gathered under the trees to hear a brief description of Diamond Head’s history.

We then began the hike with the youths and Lions as escorts. We made it to the top pretty quickly, although there were a few who took their time. After the youths got some rest and took photos, we headed back down using the new walkway.

When everyone returned, we began to eat the sandwiches that were picked up by Lion Stan. There was also ice cake and ice cream.

After a little rest, the youths shared a dance with the group. Soon it was time to clean up and get the youths back on the bus to head to their next stop of the day.

Thanks to all who participated.

Hawaii Kai CIS Enjoy Outing at Lam's Garden

Restaurant Story submitted by Aki Leu

"While the Lions work...the spouses play." Not entirely true, but the CIS had a night off from cooking on July 19th, and came out in full force during the Lions regular club meeting to eat and socialize at Lam's Garden near the Kahala Mall Shopping Center.

Co-chaired by Sylvia Nakakura and Lynn Yee, 18 CIS enjoyed a palate-pleasing dinner of crispy gaugee, Chinese salad, steamed duck, shrimp with vegetables, steamed fish with tofu, rice and chow fun noodles. We certainly ate better than the Lions who had dinner catered by Loco Moco. We even had desserts like cheesecake tart, jelly roll, mochi ice-cream, fortune cookie and Clementine oranges donated by Sylvia Nakakura, Patty Osaki and Barbara Ohta. To climax the evening, Carole Wee went home winning a Pizza Hut Gift Card. We thank Sylvia and Lynn for making all the dinner and transportation arrangements. We don't know when or where the next outing will occur, but stay "tuned", especially those CIS members who missed the last fun event.

Thanks to all individuals and

businesses for your donations

to the Convention Committee

fund!

Visit with the Langley Lions Club

Submitted by Peggy Oyama At one of our club meetings, I learned that PDG Judy Portas of the Langley Lions Club had missed an opportunity to meet with our club because we had gone dark when she visited Hawaii. So I visited her club

while I was in Vancouver in early June, and it happened to be their installation night. I was welcomed warmly by the Lions and enjoyed a wonderful evening, learning all about their club and members. I anticipate that we shall see many of them here in Hawaii, when we host the 2015 International Convention.

Errata: In the July bulletin, we mistakenly identified Selvin Chin-Chance as belonging to the Kaimuki Lions. He actually is a Koko Head Member. Thanks to Hiro Nishida for catching the error. Sorry, Selvin!
