Ministry Musings from the District Superintendent

ANNUAL CONFERENCE MISSION STATEMENT: Inspiring the World as Passionate Followers of Jesus Christ

So All May Experience God’s Life-Giving Love

"There must be always remaining in every person's life some place for the singing of angels, some places for that which in itself is breathlessly beautiful and profoundly true, some place for that which has no rational explanation, no logical or dialectical sequence.” - Howard Thurman

Isn't that why angels gathered on that first Christmas Eve? The mystery and miracle of what was taking place in that stable in Bethlehem defied rational explanation and philosophical construct. It was a divine revelation with such ecstasy that it outran theology and any reli-gious dogma. So angels were needed to announce it and explain it - not only to the shepherds, but also to Mary and Joseph and to all who were involved.

We have that same need, do we not? We who lost our innocence and who fuel our lamps with doubt. We who are worldly-wise and experienced, lending a cynical ear, whistling in the dark. We who are so busy with what we think is important that we do to pay any attention to what matters most. We need the singing of angels.

We need angels calling us to Bethlehem to find and receive God’s Gift of Love in Christ. We need angels singing to us of peace and promise, light and hope, lest we despair of them and give up on them, convinced that darkness, materialism and evil are inevitable. We need angels to remind us that in going to kneel at the Savior’s manger, we find the love that makes us whole and sends us forth to heal the world.

In the midst of needing angels, we also witnessed God's mighty presence through consecra-tion service of Aiea Korean United Methodist Church. With God’s help and their prayers, the church was built and consecrated last Sunday. Yes, God is with us.

Pacific Islander Churches were together for "Imagine No Malaria" campaign last Sunday. There were 15 local churches and more than 400 people were at the service and raised around $16,000 and more for the cause. Yes, God is with us.

This holy season, I would like to encourage all of you to consider to join the denomination campaign "Imagine No Malaria" to save a life of people in Africa. Every 60 seconds in Afri-ca, a child dies of malaria. As we join the campaign, we become singing angels for them.

Glory to God in the highest!

“AS WE JOURNEY”

Happy New Year!

“For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but have eternal life” (John 3:16). God sent his son to be born in a manger, because God loves this world. The angel told the shepherds – I am bringing you good news of great joy for all people (Luke 2:10). God sent Jesus for all people. It doesn’t matter who we are and where we are from. Yes, terrible things have happened during the year, but that doesn’t mean that God has forgotten about the world that God created. God still loves this insane, confused, brutal, self-centered and shattered world.

The truth is God will save this world. As followers of Jesus we have to believe that because nothing can sep-arate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus (Romans 8:31-39).

What would happen if we live our lives trusting and believing that God truly cares for this world? One way we can demonstrate our trust is to spend more of our time praying for this world. This is exactly what Paul told Timothy and the people to do in his letter to them – “First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings should be made for everyone” (1 Timothy 2:1). So, let’s make it a priority to pray for every nation of the world in the coming New Year. Happy New Year and to God be the glory!

An Open Letter to all Pastors and

Men of the United Methodist Church on Oahu

It is our belief that when men are involved in the church, the church will be strong and grow. It is our belief that when men are active in the church, their families will be active in the church. It is our belief that when men are active in the church, their children will grow up to be more active in the church and have closer ties to the church. It is our belief that men need to grow spiritually in or-der for them to stay active in the church. With those beliefs in mind, we would like to create more opportunities for men to grow so that they remain active in their churches. For this to happen, we would like to reach out to you to help us develop those opportunities for men.

Therefore, someone may be contacting the Pastor of your church or a United Methodist Man in your congre-gation or YOU to discuss how to meet the needs of the United Methodist Men in your church. We are look-ing for new ideas, new enthusiasm, and new faces, so that we can revitalize all of our United Methodist Men. Your ideas may be big or small, elaborate or simple, a short term event or an on-going activity. We need to touch men of all ages, ethnicities, and needs. I other words, we need your input.

The task of inspiring men is a tall order, but we can do it. You do not have to sign on for a long term basis, although you could if you wanted to. We are just looking for some new input. We want to plan some events that will be meaningful to all men. This is a time of Thanksgiving, and I am Thankful for all of the United Methodist Men we have now and I am sure we can inspire more with your help. Thank you in advance for the help you will be giving us.

Aloha in Christ, Keith Isaacson, President of Hawaii District United Methodist Men Ph. (808) 625-9157 Email: [email protected]
