Dear Kaʻōhao Families:

Everyone Matters

We are thankful for each and every student and family at our school. I have been emphasizing the importance of "inclusion" with our students and staff this school year through this year's theme, "Everyone Matters." In the classroom, it is a reminder that each and every student has a special talent and gift to share with their classmates. And while one student may excel in the maths and sciences, another shines in the Language Arts, and another in Art and PE, and so forth. Socially, it means that all students deserve to play and participate in all games at our school during recess and free time. Basically, we are trying to model the expectations of kindness, compassion, and empathy as our students become future leaders.

Parent Teacher Conferences (9/27 - 9/28)

Meeting with your child's teacher is an important part of their academic development and success. The allotted time is relatively short, but long enough for you to make a great connection. To best prepare for your child's conference, please keep in mind the following:

Be positive and believe we are on the "same team"

Be on time so that all families will have the same opportunity

Prepare questions in advance about specific items

Seek clarification (listen carefully, be specific, take notes)

We are here to help (social, emotional, after school and home life changes can affect a child)

If more discussion is required, please plan a follow-up with the teacher. We are here to be your partners in your child's education.

As always, if you have any further questions, comments, or concerns, please contact me directly at

or (808) 266-7844.

Truly,

Cool kids at school and their

students too!

COUNSELOR’S CORNER Julie Halpern, School Counselor “Everyone Matters!”

Aloha Parents,

Dr. Noh started our school year with the idea that “Everyone Matters”. What a great way to infuse kindness and respect into each of our interactions with each other!

My monthly Character Education classes usually focus on some aspect of this, including Kindness, Respect, and Friendship. I visited all of the classes in August just to say hello and meet our new students, and talk about what “Everyone Matters” means.

I am also continuing with the Kindness Club this year. It will be after school on Thursdays, 2:15 – 3:00, in my room, P-5. All grade levels are welcome! In the past we have made cards to thank teachers, valentines for friends and parents, friendship bracelets, or just played games and took time to treat each other with kindness. Students will need to let their parents or A+ leader know if they plan to attend.

I will be starting my first Character Education lesson this year with a focus on RESPECT, and what each of us can do to promote that at school, at home, in the community and the world!

I am looking forward to a great year with you and your children. Please call or contact me if you have any questions or concerns.

Aloha,

Julie Halpern,
