Welcome back to Peta Kite (S7) who has been on leave, and overseas, since last term – we look forward to hearing about your travels! A BIG thank you to Lorraine Richardson who has been teaching Studio 7, and to Hayley Henderson who has been the Acting Patiki Team Leader in Peta’s absence. Sick Students and Staff We continue to have significant challenges with high numbers of sick students and staff. Some classes this week have had up to 10 students away and on Monday we had five sick teachers. If your children are ill please keep them home. Thank you for your patience as we aim to staff classes, it is often difficult to find relieving teachers. Nicole S9 has been away since last week – we hope that Nicole will be well enough to return next Monday. Flooding – Adderley Terrace at the railway underpass We are very aware of the flooding issues at the railway underpass and I have had multiple contacts with the Council this week about this problem. I understand the Council are working to fix the issue. In the meantime if there is flooding the Council recommend students take the longer route via Peraki Street. The Council have said they cannot provide staff to supervise students’ crossing over the railway line above the underpass and given there is no formal crossing there, it should not be used as a route to school. This is not an area that we are responsible for, any concerns you have need to be taken directly to the Council. Knitting Club Susan, one of our Learning Assistants, has set up a knitting club on a Tuesday from 1:25pm – 1:50pm. If you are a keen knitter and would like to come along and help out, please contact the school office. Mufti Day Thank you for your support of our mufti day last week J. $321 was raised for KIDSCAN. We appreciate your support and the participation of so many students. Whanau Time Friday 2 nd September We are looking forward to having Corban Te Aika along to our next whānau time on behalf of mana whenua, from Tuahiwi Marae, to bless our school site before building work gets underway later in the term. Also at the next whānau time a special carving that has been done for our school will be presented.

Mufti Day Thank you for your support of our mufti day last week J. $321 was raised for KIDSCAN. We appreciate your support and the participation of so many students.

Board of Trustees Annual Survey Accompanying our newsletter last week was the 2016 Board of Trustees Annual Survey. This is an opportunity for you to provide feedback on aspects of our strategic plan. We are very keen to hear what you would like to see improved or developed. Board Members will be phoning or talking with 10 – 15 families to make sure we hear from a good cross section of our community. You don't have to wait to be approached to provide feedback J.

Energy Drinks Can you please ensure your child is not bringing energy drinks or other sugary drinks to school and not having them on the way to school or before school? They are not a great way to start the day. Water is the best drink J.

Dog Policy As mentioned last week the BoT has put in place a policy around dogs on the school site. A copy of the full policy is on SchoolDocs at http://kaiapoiborough.schooldocs.co.nz/ User Name ‘KBCH’, password ‘shine’.

Education Review Office – Request for Information under the Official Information Act A request was made recently under the Official Information Act to the Education Review Office for details of all schools in New Zealand currently on the 1 – 2 year review cycle. We are one of the 185 schools in this category. As you know we have worked hard to review and improve things within our school since the 2014 ERO review. Details of the 2015, 2014 and previous reviews of our school can be found at: http://www.ero.govt.nz/find Keywords=Kaiapoi+Borough+School. It is possible that there will be more on this in the media at some point, if you have any questions at any stage please let me know.

Teachers Paid Union Meetings On Wednesday 14th September at 1:30pm a number of our teaching staff will be attending the paid union meeting at the Rangiora Town Hall. The meeting is being called by the Teacher Unions (NZEI and PPTA) in response to the Government announcement they intend to review school funding. Teachers are concerned this means doing more for students and families with less resources rather that being funded appropriately for what needs to happen in our schools. We will remain open for instruction on this afternoon however it will be with a reduced number of staff. If can help us by collecting your child by 1:00pm; that would be greatly appreciated. For those students remaining at school, supervision will be provided. 2017 Start Date In 2017 New Zealand Primary Schools must be open for instruction for 194 days. Each school’s Board of Trustees confirms start dates for individual schools annually. Next year, starting dates must be set between Monday 30 January (at the earliest); and Tuesday 7 February (at the latest). We are anticipating the extensive refurbishment of Studios 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14 and 15 will take place over the Christmas holidays.

The maximum amount of time possible is needed for this work so Term 1 2017 will start on Tuesday 7th February. The later start date means our finish date will be on or just before the 20th of December 2017. ⇒ Breakfast Buddies Breakfast Club J - every

Thursday 8:00am in the Hall. Please note that parents are welcome to come for breakfast too! Students who come must remain in the hall until 8:30am.

⇒ Lunch On Line – Available each Wednesday, delivered to school. To setup your account, view the menu and order online, please go to https://www.lunchonline.co.nz/families/
