Businessman fights for rescue fundingA Kaipara businessman is urging Northland residents to make submissions against a proposed funding review he says threatens the work of the Northland rescue helicopter service.

Part of the Northland Regional Council’s Long Term Plan 2015–2025 affects the Northland Emergency Services Trust funds which could see the regions air ambulance lose a large part of its current allocation.

The council plan consists of reassessing funding for the service, proposing a new system which would allow all emergency services to apply on a contestable basis.

With only days to go before submissions to the plan close, on April 24, NEST ambassador and managing director of Kaipara Kumara, Anthony Blundell, has written an open letter as a concerned Northland citizen.

He encourages ‘his peers’ to make submissions to contest this proposition.

“On the surface the contestable fund proposal sounds like a good idea. However, NEST’s position is to retain the current level of funding at $600,000 — which equates to approximately 12% of its total annual income.

“The non-contestable funding provides the certainty that NEST needs in operational strategic planning and can continue to provide an essential service to the people of Northland.”

NEST trust chair Paul Ahlers believes the new scheme would make planning difficult due to the uncertainty of funding.

“We will effectively be competing with other organisations for a slice of the pie and we are concerned this will lead to an inevitable reduction in funding for NEST. Any future funding would be at the sole discretion of council and not ratepayers.

“The funding we receive from government agencies does not cover all of our operating costs — we rely heavily on local sponsorship and community donations.

“The guaranteed support we’ve received in the past has allowed the trust to operate with some confidence in our ability to cover costs.

“We support a continuation of the existing guaranteed rating structure. It allows the trust to concentrate on running an air ambulance service instead of having to constantly worry about fundraising.”

Submissions on the draft LTP document must be made before 3pm April 24. ¢

p Kipi Sarich, Jane McDonell, Marion McEwing, Ian and Michelle Cobb and Denise Stevens read the final pages of Revelations at a recent bible reading marathon in Dargaville. “People came from near and far to be involved, each reading for 15 minutes and handing on to another,” said organiser Jane McDonell. “The idea provided an opportunity for the community to do something different. It was not an organised Christian event and there was no preaching, no teaching.” The entire bible was read in six days and one night and Jane would like to thank those involved.

Turning point for tavern by Ayla Miller

After seven years of ownership, Gillian Houser is farewelling her business with the sale of the iconic Mangawhai Tavern.

During her time at the tavern, Gillian enjoyed inviting musicians and events to visit Mangawhai and played an integral part in boosting the towns profile.

“I’ve always believed events benefit the economy and the community. The feedback is positive and it has put the tavern and town on the map,“ she says.

In the past the tavern has hosted well known New Zealand acts such as Jamie McDell, Dave Dobbyn, The Feelers, Katchafire and many tribute concerts.

Gillian will be moving to Papamoa in Tauranga to be close to her family and two grandchildren. “I am really looking forward to it. It will be good to spend more time with them,” she says.

“Seven years is quite a long time to operate a business on your own and it is time to move on.

“The Christmas and New Years eve events were some of the many highlights. They were stimulating and challenging. You spend months planning towards two weeks and seeing it all come together makes it all worthwhile.

“I will miss my staff, the locals and the atmosphere.”

She has a lot of mixed emotions about the change of lifestyle and is both sad and excited to be moving on but will remain in touch with what’s going on in the area.

After a short break, Gillian will be returning to the hospitality industry she has been a part of for over 30 years.

As for the future of the tavern, the new owners have big plans. “They have different ideas and will be making it their own.” ¢

Bunny fun for everyone

p The Aratapu Tavern held its sixth annual Easter Bunny Party over Easter and 40 children played egg and spoon and sack races while the bouncy castle took care of any excess energy. The kitchen launched deep fried Oreo Cookies and Twinkies and the costume winner was April Morris. “We’re not sure who had more fun, the children or the staff — no bunny went home empty handed. It was awesome weather and an ‘eggsceptionally’ good time was had by all,” said hosts Donice and Richard.

Cycling the nationThe third annual Tour of New Zealand cycle race is underway, the length of the country with 250 New Zealand competitors joined by 70 riders from eight countries.

“We raise funds for different charities and every cent raised goes to them,” said tour organiser Peter Yarrell.

The Northern event started at Cape Reinga and left Dargaville this week. Cyclists chose to start at either Cape

Reinga or Bluff, with a special opening event from Stewart Island held for the first time.

The riders will meet in Wellington for a showdown criterium race to decide the winners for each category of the eight day tour.

A tribute to Bob Eastwood

When Norman Warren Eastwood was born in Tangiteroria on October 19, 1933, his older brother struggled to pronounce ‘Norman’ but could manage ‘Bobby’. From that day forward, he became known as Bob.

Growing up in Dargaville, Bob excelled in many sports and represented Northland in athletics and rugby. He went on to play 21 games for the North Auckland rugby team over four seasons, from 1956–59.

In one of the North Auckland’s most famous games against the Springboks in 1956, Bob outplayed his more well-known opponent, Von Vollenhoven, and helped his side to nearly pull-off a huge upset win (they lost the game 3-0).

Bob married Pamela Pleydell in 1959 and they had two children, Sheree in 1962 and Brent in 1963.

Bob worked as a draper and store manager for McCreadys and later joined construction company, Grant Developments. Together with the Grant brothers Gary, Dennis and Bruce, they bought the children’s puzzle factory, General Learning Aids.

A love of the water saw Bob spend many hours sailing on the Kaipara Harbour with his brother, and up and down the east coast, from Tutukaka to Whangaroa. Another passion was

Netballers of the futureThe recent Dargaville Sports Expo enabled 121 children to sign up with the Northern Wairoa Netball Centre to participate in a netball training circuit.

Each child that registered went into a draw to win a personally signed ball by the Magic and Steel teams, donated by the ANZ bank. The lucky winners were Harmony Covcich and Ocean Mrkusich.

Centre president, Kath Nathan, said with a recently formed executive committee they are also preparing for the future and realigning the netball structure to be in the Sportsville concept.

“We are introducing a future Ferns pilot programme for year one to four players. This will help develop their skills and knowledge of the game preparing players for the sport when they are older.”

The plans include year 10 students coaching and mentoring the younger players and monthly coaching breakfasts to support coaches, supply resources and share ideas.

“We will be able to mentor those who are young now but are prospects for teams like the Silver Ferns in the future,” said Kath. “Sports is a career, it can send you travelling the world. There

running and Bob competed in many marathons in the 1970s and 80s.

Eventually, knee problems meant Bob had to turn to cycling for fitness and the next 25 years saw him ride thousands of kilometres around Whangarei and in his favourite Northland and Lake Taupo events.

Bob and Pam lived their retired years at Ngunguru, spending plenty of time with their six grandchildren.

Pam tragically died of cancer, aged 65, in early 2001. Bob moved to Selwyn Park Retirement Village in 2013, after being diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease in 2011. He died on November 1, 2014. ¢

Little theatre renovates

New signs for carp

The Dargaville Little Theatre premises are set to receive a makeover with their facilities being upgraded for the first time since the 1980s.

Koi carp will be receiving a little more attention with the Department of Conservation distributing a new set of sign boards encouraging people to take note of what they see in Kaipara waterways.

Funding from ASB Trust is being used to upgrade the existing toilet facilities including a new all accessible cubicle.

“This building hasn’t had a major upgrade for a long time. We stripped everything down,” says president Keith Allen.

With their upcoming production ‘The Murder Room’ fast approaching, all hands are on deck to help out.

Six members attended a working bee held last week to begin the demolition, construction begins this week.

“We are working under a bit of duress and it will take a little time but it will be up and running by opening night,” he says.

“We have had funding before to do bits and pieces around the theatre and we have had a lot of interaction with the community, so that helps.”

“The signs were put up a few weeks ago and are designed to inform the public what koi look like and invite reports about where koi have been seen in our waterways,” says DOC ranger Oliver Knox.

“In the last year DOC has been talking to landowners, carrying out surveys and organising a school educational programme together with the Whitebait Connection, putting up posters and going to public events to raise awareness about koi carp.”

and fisheries. They reduce water quality, cause bank erosion and out-compete other species to the extent where they eventually dominate an ecosystem.

There are existing populations in Northland but DOC want people to determine their current locations so that appropriate measures can be taken. If koi become a problem in the Kaipara they could cause lasting damage to the ecosystem.

It is hoped that the eye-catching signs will continue to raise awareness and encourage people to keep a look out for these pest fish. ¢

Northland District Health Board Introduction of Paid Car Parking - Whangarei Hospital CampusFrom 20 April, 2015 patients, visitors and staff wishing to park on-site at Whangarei Hospital have to pay a car parking fee, Monday to Friday 8.30am - 5pm. Paid car parking is a part of our financial sustainability programme and will allow us to save our very scarce capital funds for improving and renewing our clinical buildings and continue to allow us to grow and develop clinical services in an increasingly tight fiscal environment.

By charging for parking we are aiming to control the demand, reduce congestion and increase the number of parks we have available. This will reduce the time our patients and visitors need to spend looking for a car park.

PAID CAR PARKINGPatients, visitors and staff wishing to park a vehicle on-site at Whangarei Hospital have to pay a car parking fee, Monday to Friday 8.30am - 5pm. The first one (1) hour is free for the public. Weekends and after 5pm during the week is also free. Motorbikes and bicycles can park for free every day. There are more than 311 ‘public only’ car parks for the public. Of the 311 public car parks there are 33 accessible (disability) parks. The public car parks are highlighted on the map. The main public car park is accessed via Maunu Road (near the main hospital entrance). If you are visiting the Child Health Centre, Jim Carney Cancer Treatment Centre or Wheelchair Services you will access the public car parks via Hospital Road. There is no fee to drive into the hospital site and drop someone off, as long as you leave within one hour. You still need to take a ticket but there will be no charge for up to one (1) hour. Public car parking is well signposted. Reserved staff only car parks will have a large blue number painted in the bay. Please do not park in staff only bays. Our Parking Administrator and the hospital security team are here to help. They will be patrolling the car parks and can also be found at the security desk adjacent to the hospital main entrance. HOW TO PAY You will receive a parking ticket when you drive into the hospital site which will give you access to the car park. Take this ticket with you - do not leave it in your vehicle. If you are parking at the hospital during the free times there will be no fee but you do need to validate your ticket in a pay machine to enable you to exit the car park. At the end of your visit and before returning to your vehicle, insert your ticket and pay at one of the automatic payment machines. Pay machines are located in the car parks and inside the foyer of the hospital (near main entrance). The machine will tell you how much you need to pay for parking. You can pay with cash, eftpos or credit card. Return to your vehicle. Drive to nearest exit and insert your ticket into the machine to raise the barrier arm. If your ticket is unpaid the barrier arm will not rise and you will need to return to the pay machine.

EXEMPTIONS A minimum number of exemptions have been made, i.e. regional health shuttles, emergency vehicles, courier and delivery vehicles, buses, bicycles, motorcycles, renal patients who drive themselves or are driven for haemodialysis, Chaplains, blood donors and Volunteers. Other exemptions will be considered on a case-by-case basis and may include parents of critically ill children, immediate family of long stay patients (patients staying over three weeks), and genuine hardship will be determined on a case-by-case basis. Exemption application forms are available through your outpatient clinic. Exemptions will not be made for patients who are held up due to outpatient clinics running over time. As delays can occur for a number of reasons within the hospital, it isn’t practical to make exceptions for each circumstance.

Septic tanks and multi-stage septic systems are delicately balanced environments. It does not take much to upset them. Common practice is to ignore the septic system until problems occur. Good and best economical practice is to always keep your septic system well maintained.

A malfunctioning septic system can become a health hazard. When a system is not maintained or operated as a delicately balanced environment, problems occur. These problems include nasty odours, leach line blockages, untreated liquid rising to the surface, toilets gurgling and taking time to empty. At this stage your septic system is a serious health hazard to you and your children. Human waste produces faecal coliform bacteria, a source of viral and bacterial gastroenteritis as well as Hepatitis A and other diseases. Hepatitis can be a debilitating condition and cause long-term harm to children.

There are only three remedies. One: stop using the septic system until it recovers. This can take over a month and is not normally practical. Two: excavate your septic system and relocate it. This is very costly and time consuming, sometimes requiring new resource consents and different systems. Three: treat your septic system with Septi-Cure™ every six months.

Kaipara Abuse Prevention is hosting a visit by popular educator Nathan Mikaere-Wallis.

The director of X-Factor Education and presenter and trainer for The Brainwave Trust, returns to the Kaipara with two seminars, which build on his previous presentations.

A dynamic and inspiring presenter, Nathan’s recent background has been as a lecturer at Canterbury University, a neuroscience presenter for Brainwave and as a Child Protection trainer. He is currently lead trainer for the Brainwave Trust and serves on many boards.

In addition to being a father, and previously a foster parent, Nathan’s professional background is in child counselling, teaching and social service management. He has built up a nationwide reputation as a lively, engaging and inspirational speaker on the topic of brain development. Nathan uses humour to make this sometimes complex topic, both easy to understand and easily related to day-to-day experiences.

“Nathan will be in Dargaville on Thursday, May 14, to hold an evening presentation on the Adolescent Years,” says organiser and SKIP coordinator Yvette Gilchrist. “It will be packed with essential information and we’re

It’s a little known fact that chainsaw manufacturing giant Husqvarna actually predates the invention of the chainsaw by at least 200 years.

The Scandinavian company, also famous for their powerful off-road motorcycles, was founded before the combustion engine was even a twinkle in Mr Benz’s eye. They were set up to provide muskets and cannon to the Swedish army in 1689, beginning a long love affair with steelwork. That, to give you some idea, was in the time of Isaac Newton.

These days, Husqvarna chainsaws embrace new technology to slice through timber all around the world. This year’s entry level chainsaw, the Husqvarna 135, has a host of features shared with its big brothers.

The X-torq motor system may be scaled down to fit a lightweight and versatile homeowner’s saw — but all the

safety features, including a rapid chain brake — are there to make stacking that woodpile easier. Everything is geared to easy maintenance, from the tool-free chain tensioner wheel through to a snap-off air filter.

Well established local store B’Arch Wear is celebrating 10 successful years in business.

After completing a ‘Be Your Own Boss’ course in 2005, Jonette Bartlett-Sadlier originally from Pouto opened her own shop which has grown to include clothing, a range of BOOM skate wear, an R18 section and more.

“I wanted to find a niche market and bring something to Dargaville that we didn’t have before,” says Jonette.

“Some of the highlights over the years have been sourcing new products to bring to Dargaville and keeping it hip as well as affordable and different. I saw a gap in the market.”

She hopes to increase her clothing range in the future and will be importing the latest fashions from Australia and

will be stocking summer beach wear over the winter months for customers travelling abroad. This year B’Arch Wear has started to stock e-cigarette pens.

“We have had a very positive response and a lot of people have given up smoking because of them.”

The store has always been in McKays Arcade which Jonette says is a blessing.

“I’d like to thank the McKays family. We are really lucky to have them as our landlords. They have been really good to us and being in the arcade means we have that added security.”

They will be celebrating with a sale starting on April 14. ¢

With over a quarter century in business, there is very little in the way of glass repair which Window and Door Services boss Kevin Sowter can’t handle.

But the veteran glazier — along with his team — is used to seeing the same kind of tasks turn up as the weather begins to turn chilly. Homeowners who may have put off cracks, creaks, gaps and drips during the summer put his services in demand this time of year, leading to a busy schedule for the Dargaville tradesmen.

Kevin and his crew take the seasonal change in their stride, of course — but they are quick to note that this time of year heralds some other changes which they can assist with.

For new builds, this is the time of year when double glazing is often mentioned. But it’s the longer, darker nights which

Are you ready for winter?Chainsaw safety in the spotlight by Andy Bryenton

As autumn puts a chill in the air, many Kiwis will head for the shed, ready to fire up their chainsaws and lay in a store of firewood for the coming winter.

But working with serious outdoor power equipment is not without its risks, as evidenced by the alarming number of chainsaw related injuries dealt with each year by our paramedics and hospital professionals. To combat this danger, chainsaw manufacturer Stihl and the Saint John’s Ambulance service run an annual campaign to promote saw safety — Chainsaw Safety Awareness Week or CSAW.

It’s a timely call, because despite the obvious danger of a powerful machine which can rip through hard timber, a lax attitude often prevails, especially amongst casual operators. In the

forestry sector strict regulations and a careful approach mean that foresters are always to be found wearing a full suite of protective gear when plying their trade. But home and farm users sometimes neglect to kit up with gloves, boots and other protective measures — measures which could prevent a large number of horrific injuries. Modern chainsaw safety chaps, for example, are made from a special fabric which jams and stops the blade. Helmets which incorporate mesh eye visors and earmuffs can save a user’s vision and hearing.

But even more important safety features are incorporated into modern chainsaws themselves. The invention of the chain brake has been hailed as the single best means of preventing saw injuries — yet some folks still use older saws without one, or — in a move which can only be described as idiotic — remove the brake mechanism voluntarily. A saw which runs or cuts poorly is also more prone to failure,

so before beginning work this autumn pay a visit to your local chainsaw repair specialist for a tune-up. You’ll power through your tasks with a saw in top condition, and there is far less chance of an accident! ¢

DUCK SHOOTING SEASON 2015A sporting start to duck season by Andy Bryenton

As the first Saturday in May approaches, hunters across the Kaipara are preparing for a cracker season of shooting in our scenic local wetlands.

Many have already secured their seasonal licences, taking note of new bag limits which decrease the mallard and grey duck harvest but increase the bag of paradise shelducks to 25 per day. Licence fees are poured back into environmental initiatives such as wetland reclamation and preservation, ensuring a habitat for waterfowl for seasons in the future.

Savvy hunters are investing in good camouflage to avoid scaring off their prey. Dargaville’s Hunting and Fishing owner Jason is a veteran, who knows how wily the ducks can be.

“They’re not anywhere near as dumb as people may think,” he says, citing the waterfowl’s ability to spot predators with keen eyesight and movement detection.

“Good camo is a must — including face paint for the serious hunter.” A mixture of decoys, from static placements to advanced animatronic moving models is a good way to lure ducks into a sense of security.”

New guns provide firepower for duck hunters this season, with the Beretta A400 the gas powered semi auto of choice, thanks to advances in recoil reduction. Pump action purists return to the tried-and-true Remington 870, available in both left and right hand configurations. No matter what you’re firing, get in some practice and make sure those sights are lined up by hitting the clays leading up to May 2nd. Of course, having your guns checked over for accuracy and safety is paramount.

The popularity of shows such as ‘Duck Dynasty’ has seen a resurgence in calling the old fashioned way, and those old-style calls will be on display at Hunting and Fishing Dargaville’s annual duck shooter’s night on the 29th of April,
