Entries in the Gilmore Brown Art Awards 2014 have been unveiled in a opening gala at the Kauri Museum and will remain there on exhibition for the next month.

The event last Friday gave more than 100 guests a chance to view artworks submitted in five categories, while tasting fine wines and enjoying the best local cheeses.

“It was stunningly successful,” says Awards committee chairman John Pickworth.

He says the awards were a collaborative event between the Mangawhai and Dargaville Arts associations, principal sponsor Gilmore Brown and host, The Kauri Museum.

Great soccer season

A blooming success

New transmitter site

p Otamatea 1st XI Girls’ soccer team have achieved third place in the first division of the Northland Secondary School Girls’ soccer tournament. “We played against five other teams around Northland and won six of our eight games, resulting in an all-round great season,” said Dani White. “We were pleased to get a new uniform mid-way through the season and a big thanks should go to our coach, parent helpers and Simone Sidwell for coaching and transporting us to games.

p The Kaipara Lifestyler’s Andy Bryenton delivers a donation cheque to the ANZ Bank’s Teresa Bagnall. Messages of remembrance and respect filled our publication this year from leading Kaipara businesses, as we supported the good work of the Cancer Society in their quest to improve the lives of cancer patients, survivors and their families.

p After two and a half years of planning, Big River FM now occupies the old TVNZ transmitter site at Katui. “Thanks to the tireless efforts of our patron, Phil Godfrey, and generosity of landowners, the Fisher family, Big River FM’s 88.2FM signal has been strengthened in Aranga and surrounding areas,” says station manager Anaru Tana. “A big thank you also to the specialist riggers from Kordia who installed our antenna at no charge.”

If I StayA sweeping American romantic drama,

centred around the family of Mia, a cellist and ex-girlfriend of up and coming rock star Adam Wilde. The story unfolds after the family’s car crashes in snowy conditions, leading to a series of flashbacks which reveal the past of Mia’s relationship with Adam, and that of her parents, leading to a decision that’s literally life or death. The Last Saint

Minka is a teenage Polynesian boy living in the heart of the city. With his P-addicted mother well on the way to going completely off the rails, three people enter his life - each with a promise - each with the power to destroy. Powerful Kiwi film-making with heart.Aunty and the Star People

Jean Watson, recently turned 80 years old, is a Kiwi novelist who lives in Wellington and is well regarded in the literary community. But half a world away, in the poor region of Tamil Naidu in India, she is revered as ‘Aunty’, the lady who has given hope to a generation of orphans, by setting up homes for them and funding their school studies. A touching documentary, following the life of an everyday ‘saint’ from New Zealand. The Hundred Foot Journey

Madame Mallory runs a celebrated French restaurant - but is dismayed and threatened when the Kadam family open up their own ethnic eatery across the street. Sensibilities and cultures clash, until an unlikely twist of fate brings the warring chefs together.Housebound

Another cracker of a Kiwi horror flick, in the tradition of Peter Jackson’s early work. Sentenced to house arrest, Kylie is forced to move in with her parents, who seem strangely cheerful about the prospect of their home being haunted. Winner of the coveted HR Giger prize at horror’s ‘Dead by Dawn’ festival.

The 100 Year Old Man Who Climbed Out the Window and Disappeared

With a title like that, you know that this Swedish comedy is going to be offbeat and weird - and you would be right! When Mr Karlsson ‘escapes’ from an old folks’ home on his 100th birthday, there’s an added cause for concern. He’s not only out to recapture his youth, he’s also one of the world’s top experts on explosives.Lucy

Lucy is captured and turned into a drug mule for a new and powerful synthetic drug. When the bag she is carrying inside of her stomach leaks, Lucy’s body undergoes unimaginable changes that unlocks 100% of her mind’s full potential. With her new-found powers, Lucy turns into a merciless warrior intent on getting back at her captors.Magic in the Moonlight

The wealthy Catledge family hire jaded but talented English magician Stanley Crawford to help unmask a clairvoyant who they believe is trying to swindle them out of a fortune. But are her tricks really an illusion? It’s up to the stage magician to try to unravel a web of love, lies, mysteries and mysticism.Guardians of the GalaxyA rag-tag band of interstellar thieves and assassins must save the galaxy from the clutches of an evil warlord. With cutting edge FX and cutting sarcasm, this is a comical roller-coaster ride of action which will appeal to fans of fellow Marvel flick ‘The Avengers’The Dark Horse

The true story of Genesis Potini, a Kiwi chess genius who was institutionalised with severe bipolar disorder. Upon being released, he goes to live with his patched-gang-member brother, and decides to teach the youth of Gisborne the game of chess in a bid for the national champs.

NEW ZEALAND PARTYFocus NZ, the new party on the block, took a team to Dargaville to talk.

What we found was a hard-working, proud people who feel let down and deserted by our Government. They have suffered all sorts of indignities with their Council, and the final blow was when the current MP promoted legislation which was then passed and closed out any chance of real justice for the Mangawhai sewerage scheme. There is no doubt the protection and cover-up was at the highest level.

We canvassed shops and businesses and saw no sign of the rock star economy, only disillusioned, struggling business people.

Hard-working people like Rodger and Glory who have worked hard. An accident happens and they feel stressed, unsupported by OSH.

Jo has her house threatened by subsidence, has paid her government levied insurance and has once again been bullied, feels unsupported and has been told to live with their lousy offer. their lousy offer. their lousy offer.

Hard working Dargaville people, you have been side-tracked by central and regional government and treated like a poor cousin. Compare your road network with Whangarei roads and bridges. That is not an accident!

Focus NZ has called a team of real working businessmen to arms. Two years’ work and commitment, discussing policy and problems, and now we are ready for battle.

If you are happy with what you have, vote for the other parties, but if you want determined people experienced in real business to fight for change in Northland - Vote Focus New Zealand: Ken Rintoul

Hear how Focus NZ will rearrange government budget priorities, and send compliance laws, such as OSH regulations, back to the regions to be modified so they are relevant to that region. Hear how we will revive the provinces: all at a meeting in your town soon.

The categories were painting and drawing, won by Pauline Gough; photography and printmaking, won by Alistair Morrow; three-dimensional, won by Terry Haines; wood, won by Robyn Mitchell; and adornments, won by Susie Petersen.

Mr Pickworth says the wood category was created last year and is a tribute to Northland’s timber tradition and the large number of artists in the area who work with wood. The adornments category recognises the artists who create jewellery and body adornments. “There were hairpins and scarves, while there was a cape made of bulrushes and a hand-woven carpet.”

Dargaville Arts Association chairman Allan Mortensen said it was a great night for the association, with seven of it’s artists taking away awards.

Mr Pickworth says he was delighted with the support from sponsors, including, Te Whai Bay Wines which supplied wine for the gala opening, Kaiwaka Cheese Shop which provided a variety of cheeses, Echo Valley Olives which supplied olive oil. Part of the Kaipara Lifestyler’s sponsorship supplied fresh oysters from Paparoa’s Zephyr Oysters for the gala opening.

He says the category winners received $300, a Kauri rosette, a certificate and a handmade kauri bowl inlaid with paua.

Mr Pickworth says all entries will be on display at the Kauri Museum until October 5. Most of the pieces are for sale.

BNZ staff help local communityu by Colin Patterson

Throughout the country last Wednesday the BNZ closed its doors in their annual effort to provide community service.

Every branch had a closed sign on their doors as more than 5500 staff nationally spent the day away from their desks.

In Dargaville BNZ staff water blasted and cleaned walls on the exterior of the town’s Salvation Army shop, creating a more pleasing and cleaner entrance for customers.

The team faced an additional challenge of trying to remove graffiti that had been plastered on the Salvation Army wall and on the wall of a neighbouring building housing Sport Northland.

BNZ Dargaville manager Sharon George says the day was awesome. “When we finished cleaning the storefront the staff invited us in for a cup of tea. Then we went to Hal Harding’s

farm and planted hundreds of flaxes and cabbage trees in the wetland.”

The BNZ staff were joined by both Dargaville Intermediate School students and the rain. “We got a bit wet. But we had gumboots and coats, so it was OK.”

She says the day went well. “We loved it. We had a lot of fun and got a sense of satisfaction from doing something for the community. It was definitely worthwhile. We’ve had a lot of feedback from customers asking how it went.”

BNZ will be repeating Closed for Good next year and Ms George is looking forward to helping community groups around Dargaville.

“I’d like to see a whole lot more applications.” To apply go to www.closedforgood.org ¢

Christmas marketfor showcase calendaru by Joanne Speechly

Members of the Northern Wairoa Anglican Church have produced a beautiful 2015 calendar, which is sure to be a popular present this Christmas.

Summer Day — Kaipara includes a collection of vibrant photos, all taken and contributed by local photographers.

“We’re always looking for ways to fundraise and the calendars have proved very popular. This is the fourth calendar our parish has produced and I am told

that many go overseas as Christmas presents for ex-Dargavillians,” says Anne Mitchell.

The calendar is on sale now at Gloria’s Flowers and Gifts, Inder Auto One, the Dargaville Museum or contact Anne on 09 439 8424 or [email protected]. ¢

Penalties for unpaid water billsu by Colin Patterson

Kaipara residents who are slow in paying their water rates are likely to face penalties, after commissioners last month adopted new rules regarding water.

They decided the council would charge penalties on unpaid water invoices, although they did not specify what those penalties would be or how they will be applied.

Currently the council sends out invoices for water twice a year to residents living in urban parts of the district. The average charge for domestic customers is $360 per invoice or $719 a year.

But commissioners were told by finance manager Glennis Christie that the absence of penalties for late or non-payment means the council is owed $300,000 in unpaid bills from 490 domestic and commercial customers and has few options for

obtaining payment from those who refuse to or are unable to pay.

While the council has the legal authority is disconnect if water bills are not paid, the Health Act requires that disconnection must not create unsanitary conditions.

Commissioners rejected an option for more frequent billing, as they were told that would lead to higher administration costs. Instead they decided to implement a system to encourage users to pay their bills by direct debit; and to implement a penalty regime for late payment.

The issue of penalties will go out for consultation as part of the council’s Long Term Plan for 2015/25. ¢

Local barista on topu by Joanne Speechly u by Andy Bryenton

The Northland Barista Champion for 2014 is Mike McKenzie of Maungaturoto.

The head barista, baker and manager of Tulip Cafe has been brewing coffee for half his life but this is the first time he has entered the championships.

Michael said it was a demanding few days, akin to the cooking shows that have recently taken television audiences by storm.

“There was a panel of four sensory judges and three technical judges. Each contestant has a 15 minute time slot and is assessed on everything — grinding and tamping the coffee, timing and how good the milk is. You have to sell your concept to the judges.”

In addition to four espressos and four tulip cappuccinos, contestants were required to make a signature drink. Michael called his Tu Meke.

“My signature drink was a chocolatey, spicy short black, with a very small amount of milk, spiced with cardamom, cinnamon and peppercorn, poured into a piccolo glass and served with a little bit of raw organic honey and topped with grated raw chocolate and Maldon salt.”

The Barista Championships took place over the three days at the More FM Northland Home and Living Show.

Michael said he will use the experience to help lift the profile of Tulip Cafe and he is considering attending the National Barista Championships in May 2015.

“It’s quite surprising how geeky people can be with coffee and if they learn through the grapevine that there is some really good coffee happening in Maungaturoto then they will come and check it out.” ¢

Spring is a time for change, and that means new menu selections at Dargaville’s popular Pad Thai restaurant. But it’s not just the menu that’s changing — there is a new chef at the helm of this busy kitchen, adding a spicy new twist to some old favourites. Fresh on the menu this week, and by all accounts flying out the door as fast as they can be cooked — are succulent pork ribs, glazed in a red wine and honey sauce, then served

Make some Northern Noize

Obey the Kurfew

With members of hit Kiwi group Smashproof, and featuring Drew from C4 to boot, Northern Noize are a multi-headed, multi-talented beats and rhymes machine, storming into Dargaville on Saturday the 13th. Sir-T, Ty, Deach, Roc and the crew dominate the mics and turntables, delivering a uniquely New Zealand sound that is sure to get the crowd moving. Fans of Smash Proof’s

raw and soulful hip hop styles will be delighted to welcome this supergroup to town, as part of a tour of the North before Smashproof head on down the line for more summer shows.

Tickets are currently available from the Northern Wairoa Hotel, where Northern Noize will play the historic ballroom to what is sure to be a fired-up and packed out crowd. ¢

Also rocking Dargaville this month are rock and pop party-starters Kurfew, acclaimed as a powerhouse four-piece and even carrying the stamp of approval of local favourites Tempist Fujit. That’s high praise indeed for the talented combo, who turn the volume up to eleven with covers of fan favourites spanning

decades and genres. Pictures from a recent show at Whangarei’s ballroom told the tale, as the crowd got up on their feet to party the night away, and now the intense sound and energy of Kurfew is headed for the Dargaville Club, landing on Saturday 20th September. Get amongst it and rock out! ¢

Northland shares leadu by Colin Patterson

Northland’s Roller Mills rugby team has made a winning start to this year’s tournament.

Last Sunday the young Northerners defeated Bay of Plenty 21-7 in the tournament’s opening match at Ngatea. That means Northland shares the lead on the points table with Auckland West.

“We’re stoked to get a win,” says team manager Catherine Stewart from Ruawai. “It sets a precedent for the rest of the tournament. But we know there’s a lot of work to do.”

Ms Stewart says the team stayed in Thames on Saturday night before travelling to Ngatea for the tournament opening ceremony. That was followed by the weigh in before kick-off at 12.15.

The Roller Mills championship started in 1925. It is the second-oldest rugby

trophy in New Zealand after the Ranfurly Shield. It involves primary school representative teams from most of the northern half of the North Island. Greats of the game such as Colin Meads, Grant Fox, Keven Mealamu, Keiran Read and Sonny Bill Williams all got their start in rep rugby at the Roller Mills.

This year is the first for a new format. Previously the tournament was conducted during the school holidays, with all games being played in one area over a short time-frame.

Northland’s next game is this weekend in Waipu against Thames Valley, and then against North Harbour in Silverdale the following weekend. ¢

Kaipara smokers encouraged to stub outu by Colin Patterson

A nationwide initiative to encourage kiwis to give up smoking passed through Dargaville last week.

Stoptober is run by Action on Smoking and Health and is funded as part of the Government’s campaign to make New Zealand Smokefree by 2025.

It will be the country’s biggest ever stop smoking initiative and aims to convince as many as possible of the country’s 463,000 smokers to give up for the whole of October. Clinical evidence shows that smokers who quit for a month are five times more likely to stop permanently.

The Stoptober ball stopped outside the Dargaville Warehouse on Wednesday, encouraging Kaipara smokers to register with stop smoking services before the campaign starts.

Northland District Health Board smokefree advisor Bridget Rouse says although Dargaville has no stop smoking service, smokers can receive support from Te Oranga or from the Dargaville Medical Centre. She says calls to Quitline (0800 778 778) are

free, even from mobiles. Assistance, such as patches, gum and lozenges, are also available to smokers who want to quit.

They may also be eligible for quickmist — an oral mouth spray — and an Inhalator which delivers nicotine without the need to smoke.

The Stoptober Ball had come from Kaitaia and Kaikohe, where people had written comments on it.

After leaving Dargaville it travelled to Stoptober events at Northtec and in central Whangarei. ¢

Planning vital for best resultsu by Andy Bryenton

Ask any seasoned real estate professional, and they are likely to tell you the same thing — a home is only as modern and functional as its kitchen and bathroom areas.

While other rooms are relatively easy to change, rearrange and redecorate, sometimes (as seen on television) by adding furnishings and artwork, the fixtures and fittings of both the bathroom and kitchen tend to be made of more solid stuff.

A remodel in these areas can soon spiral out of control both in terms of time and money unless some savvy planning is engaged beforehand.

Bear in mind, too, that trends in design can date an entire home just from the kitchen or bathroom. Brown and orange formica? Welcome back to 1977! Floral prints and pastel pink? 1986. Choosing

a look which will prove timeless is often a matter of compromise between what looks uber-chic now and what will remain functional over years of showers and dinners.

No matter which stylistic direction you take, be sure to pick out the functional pieces first, and measure to fit them in. It seems a simple mistake to build a designer kitchen and then find the stove won’t fit, but it has been known to happen.

Similarly, make sure that qualified professionals undertake the work in these two areas where electricity, gas and water are in close proximity.

Your insurance company will need to know the job was in good hands, and it certainly helps your peace of mind as well!  ¢

The inspection processWhat inspections do I need?

Council will determine what inspections will be necessary to enable it to be satisfied on reasonable grounds that compliance will be achieved. Each inspection will be identified along with the requirements for that particular inspection. A list of inspections will be attached to your building consent.Inspections by others

Sometimes it is necessary for specialists to conduct inspections in addition to the inspections carried out by Council. If a specialist inspection is necessary you will generally be advised before the consent is granted. How do I book an inspection?

Building inspections are undertaken by appointment only and are booked through the Customer Services team on 0800 727 059

You will be required to provide Council with the following information when booking an inspection:

• building consent number • site address • name and telephone number of contact person on site

• date and time the inspection is required (am/pm)

• type of inspection, i.e.; plumbing, drainage, foundation, pre-slab, pre-line, etcetera

What is required for an inspection? All approved building consent

documentation is required to be on site for the inspection — no documentation or incomplete documentation will mean no inspection. What if the inspection has not been approved?

If an inspection results in a fail, the work required to be undertaken will be recorded on the inspection notice. In most cases another inspection will be required to inspect remedial work.

If the work is not remedied to the satisfaction of the Building Inspector,

it is likely that a Notice to Fix will be issued. What is a Notice to Fix?

A Notice to Fix is by Council and advises that certain works have not been carried out in accordance with the Building Code. If a Notice to Fix is issued, you are required to address the issues identified within a prescribed time frame to prevent further action being taken.Do I need a Practical Completion Inspection?

Yes, all building consents require a Practical Completion Inspection (final). When all work has been completed in accordance with the Building Consent a Code Compliance Certificate may be issued. ¢

A farming view of policiesThe Green Party election plank that all farmers must fence off rivers, lakes, waterways and wetlands from stock with a buffer zone for vegetation by mid-2017, and the way their policy is worded, would seem to suggest farmers are the biggest polluters in the country.

In actual fact, the overwhelming majority of farmers are hugely conscious of the health of waterways and the land.

It is good to see Fonterra’s defence that their dairy farmer members now have 95% total stock exclusion from waterways, with more than 23,000 kilometres of fencing and planting complete.

The Labour Party and the Greens believe all New Zealand rivers should be clean enough to swim in, not just clean enough to dip your toe in. Well, Northland’s tidal Northern Wairoa River could be very challenging for them if they try and change its reputation of being “the upside down river” due to its muddy silt nature.

Still on water issues, their proposed policy of charging irrigation users for the water they use is a matter for some debate. In the majority of cases, freshwater flows from its catchments into the open sea and the general public benefits from the fact that irrigation users contribute to New Zealand’s economic sustainability by way of paying taxes and compliance fees, which would surely decline if the viability of irrigating productive farm land was made uneconomic. Dairying in the South Island has made a huge contribution to the New Zealand dairy

industry and from farmers reinvesting in their communities.

We should all remember the story of the goose that laid the golden egg and what happened to the goose after someone had the bright idea of killing the goose with the idea of grabbing more golden eggs.

The Labour Party’s Capital Gains Tax and the fumbling of David Cunliffe in explaining this policy has not helped Labour’s cause. New Zealand already has income tax legislation which has detailed and complex provisions

bringing many gains into the tax net. This was introduced progressively to c o u n t e r t h e situation whereby land developers and bu i l d e r s became, in effect,

untaxed occupations. In broad terms, we tax gains on the

sale of land acquired with an intention of resale, gains made by land dealers, developers and builders and gains arising from the rezoning, subdivision or development of land.

There are exceptions for private residences, business premises and farmland. In short profit or gains from the sale of property where the taxpayer is a dealer in such property is already taxable.

As a farmer, after listening to some politicians in this election, I get the clear impression that these politicians believe that tax revenue should be increased and the net be spread more widely into New Zealand’s farming industry which is the backbone of the economy.

Farmers live with great uncertainty. On one hand we are encouraged to produce more. We are told that China has the capacity to take all of our dairy produce and that our incomes will continue on the up and up. We are well aware that our fortunes can change dramatically as they are currently doing, with Fonterra’s huge reduction in payout performance this current season and the Westland Dairy Company revealing its payout forecast well below Fonterra’s forecast.

History has provided some very valuable lessons. Some of us can remember the then Dairy Board chairman Jim Graham telling dairy farmers that they would receive a record payout, only to have he and his Board later encouraging dairy farmers to take up a subsidy to reduce cow numbers because of a dairy surplus world-wide.

We New Zealanders sometimes bemoan our lot, but when we look at the rest of the world currently in the turmoil of revolutions, wars and anarchy, we have got a lot to be thankful for.

That includes electoral choice and it behoves the rural voter to look closely at policies which affect their livelihoods, as well as the nation’s bank balance. ¢

“I get the clear impression that these politicians believe that tax revenue should be

increased…”

Forward planning leads to greener pasturesu by Andy Bryenton

The indications of a long hot summer are in the air, and farmers are making plans well in advance to ensure that their livestock are adequately fed with their preferred fodder — grass and silage.

This has meant an early start for those professionals who take to the paddocks early to ensure good strong pasture growth. And those who have opted to begin the season early do so with good reason; despite some issues in low-lying areas getting the trucks in, fert spreading companies are already reporting steady business ahead of what may be another dry summer.

This means that some of our local operators are thinking outside the box, as are some farmers. A combined approach using terrestrial (four wheels) and aerial (chopper and fixed wing) application may be considered by early adopters this year. Modern tech means that men on the ground and in the air can precisely hit their targets across a whole farm, with minimal overlap — and, according to local Dargaville operators KD Spreaders, this kind of digital

placement technology has advanced massively in recent years.

GPS satellite tracking has spurred an exciting trend in fert spreading. A recent conference held in Dargaville to promote the advanced TracMap system played to a full house, with representatives from large fert providers and institutions such as NZ Beef and Lamb having their say about an innovation which promises not just to put detailed information in front of farmers at their home PC, but also looks set to slash runoff wastage, cut bottom lines for fert operations, and allow more precise mixes to be spread. Those who

took a look would be advised to put the system to the test this season, when results will be clearly visible!

The early application of fertiliser stems from a desire to build up stores of silage, and is based on a simple premise — that the cow’s digestive system is made for grass, not replacements like palm kernel, which can also prove a big cost.

With good testing, precise, computer-aided management and accurate fert placement, pasture can provide everything stock need to weather the summer season. ¢

Gold medal olives u by Colin Patterson

Barry and Verity Baines of Chapel Olive Oil have every reason to celebrate.

The Paparoa couple scooped three gold medals and one silver in the recent Oliveti awards for olive oil produced in the northern part of the North Island.

Producers put forward 41 entries in six categories. Mr and Mrs Baines entered their Chapel Olive Oil in four of them, winning three and coming runner-up in a fourth.

Chapel Olive Oil was successful in the Leccino, Koroneiki and Frantoio/Leccino blend categories and won a silver medal in the Frantoio category.

Co-owner Barry Barnes says the awards showed that Paparoa is a good location to grow olives and extract their oil.

“We’re right on the edge of the Kaipara Harbour and some trees are

within 20 feet of the high water. There are no wind breaks. That allows the salt air to get in and means we have no peacock spot, which is a fungus that affects olive trees.”

Mr Baines says he prunes to create open trees that are easy to pick. But because the local market for olive oil is quite limited, they only pick one-third of what they grow. Mr Baines says most of the oil is sold at farmers’ markets, the Dargaville Market and at Northland Field Days. They also sell online and through retail outlets in Dargaville, Ruawai, Maungaturoto and Waipu.

He says the olive trees coped well with the last two dry summers, while the winter weather has had only a small effect on his crop.
