Kallangur By Brett Parker

4th Degree Black Belt

Being the first edition of the Kallangur News for 2014,

I would like to welcome the new students who have

joined us in 2014 and of course a big welcome back to

all the other students to another exciting and challeng-

ing year of training.

The Kallangur club now has a high proportion of high-

er ranks in class with some very hard grading‟s in the

near future (Brown Belt, Black Tip and Black Belt

grading‟s) With these promotions you will see a big

changes in the training and require-

ments for promotion – the big focus

on self-defence, advanced techniques

(with board breaking) and fitness

work. Good luck to all of those under-

taking these grading‟s this year, keep

training hard, focus and where possi-

ble do extra training at home or at

other clubs.

I would also like to take the opportunity to invite any

higher grades from other classes wishing to mix it up

with additional training to come and train at the

Kallangur club to give yourself that extra edge leading

into grading‟s, given the high proportion of high ranks

we have at the moment.

This year I have decided to bring it back and conduct a

mini “countdown” to my #1 favourite kick.

Favourite Kicks of All Time.

Coming in at #4

Axe Kick:

Some of the reasons axe kick is my 4th favourite kick

are -

It can be executed in many different ways (inner,

outer, straight, close, mid, far ranges), can be targeted

to different areas of the body, and of course is a heel

kick (which means it hurts your opponent more)

Train Hard

With the first IMT Tournament fast approaching I

would like to see all of our eager students who com-

peted last year to get involved again, and more im-

portantly the students who have not been to a tourna-

ment to get involved for fun and exciting day.

Everyone who participated last year had a big hand in

helping the Kallangur Club try to retain the perpetual

club trophy, but we were unfortunately pipped at the

post by a fast finishing Redcliffe Club. This is again

our opportunity to show the IMT family that the

Kallangur Club is the one to beat.

The 1st Round Tournament will see the Kallangur

Club host the lunch time canteen. This will be an im-

portant fund raising venture for our

club which will see funds raised for

the purchase of new equipment which

only further benefits the training of

the students. Please help support this,

and support your club. Same as last

year if there are any talented parents /

grandparents out there who would like

to donate some of your famous cakes or biscuits for

sale on the day please see me about it in the near fu-

ture. All offers would be appreciated along with help

serving the canteen on the day.

In previous years throughout our 4 seasonal Newslet-

ters I have highlighted my favourite breaking tech-

niques, techniques of the season, stretches etc.

...Continued from previous page.

We had another successful day at the first

AMAC tournament for the year. From only 3

competitors we managed, one 1st place, three

2nd places, a 3rd place and three 4th places.

Well done to those people flying the flag for the

IMT at these competitions, great job guys. As I

like to remind everyone how rewarding it is to

compete in these events - and I'm not talking

about winning or losing. It's about pitting your-

self against others - in the spirit of competition.

Watch out this year also, as Ormeau will be

bringing a strong junior team. The class is

adapting well to the new changes from their old

style to our system. All students have decided to

start back at white belt level and are ready for a

strong performance at this years first grading. I

wish them well as it's been quite a bit of work

ironing out of the differences from the old club

to our curriculum.

On that note, good luck to all our new members

attempting their first grading with the organisa-

tion. We hope you enjoy your journey in martial

arts with us. We want you to be the best person

you can be, on and off the training floor.

Through persistence you will gain the rewards

that Tae Kwon Do can offer. Remember though,

that as a member you represent our club at all

times - be polite, be courteous, and respect your

fellow students.

I recently celebrated a landmark birthday (the

big 5-0), and had a suitable party to match. It

was great to have my family, workmates and

IMT friends attend and all get on so well. The

night was simply awesome, as were the wonder-

ful gifts including a iPad Air and enough bour-

bon to knock down an elephant. Thanks every-

one for the kind words you spoke in the video

that was played on the night as well. It's very

humbling to have such nice things said about

you. I have to say that turning 50 really makes

you take a look at your life and what you have

achieved. The organisation is my greatest ac-

complishment - in the way it has bought so

many different groups of people together - to

become more like a family instead of just a

group of people that train together. The feeling

of worth that this club gives me is hard to put

into words but it is one of genuine joy and

friendship. I thank those people that attended the

party and even for tolerating my karaoke voice.

It's one night I'll remember for a long time.

It’s been a huge start to the year with much more

to come. Make sure you go to our website and

download the calendar of events so you don't

miss anything. So train hard, kick high and keep

striving for perfection.

In the meantime, I'm off to Disneyland!

A word from the CHIEF INSTRUCTOR

Page 3: KALLANGUR GREATESTSHAVE REDCLIFFE LADIES ......with my first destination Disneyland in Los Angeles, then Las Vegas and finally New York. I trust you will all attend the training as

a great way the IMT “family” could show our love & support to them,

if we put a team together to take part in the Shave, and see how much

money we could raise. Having lost my Dad 3 years ago to leukaemia,

made my drive for this cause even stronger.

I sent out a few emails to see if this was something that we could

make work, & was faced with nothing but support. Before long, we

had 7 members signed up to take part in the Shave, & the fundraising

began (along with the friendly rivalry between the members about

who would raise the most). We raised funds in a variety of ways,

ranging from annoying our friends & family…..sending out messages

on Facebook or emails…..work sausage sizzles……running a very

successful ladies self-defense workshop (Ladies Unleashed)……and

a mega raffle with some incredible prizes donated by sponsors men-

tioned below. Tony & I went a little crazy in putting the call out for

sponsors for the raffle, and we were humbled by the amount of sup-

port we received, ending up with 16 different prize draws!

As the weekend of the Shave fell on the same weekend as the All-

Rank Training Camp at Kenilworth, it was an easy way to have

Over the past few years I have referred to, and have heard many other

IMT members refer to, our club as a “family”. And what do we do

when one of our “family” members is going through a tough time?

We pull together & pitch in to help in whatever way we

can……..even if it means shaving & colouring our hair. So, this year,

a team of IMT members decided to get together to raise much needed

funds for the Leukaemia Foundation‟s World‟s Greatest Shave.

As some of you might know, one of our 1st Degree Black Belts, Mi-

chael Griffith, has been going through the fight of his life over the

past 4 years, battling Hodgkins Lymphoma. Last year, Michael, Co-

Instructor of our Bribie club, and the son of Bribie Instructor, Lee

Griffith, 2nd Degree Black Belt, not only married his beautiful wife

Ellen (also an IMT member), but he underwent a bone marrow trans-

plant. I know I can‟t even begin to understand what Michael & his

family have been going through, both physically & emotionally, dur-

ing his battle. But when I saw on Facebook that Lee had registered to

take part in the World‟s Greatest Shave…… “to help raise money for

the Leukaemia Foundation who have done so much for so many,

especially my boy and his beloved Ellen”……..I thought it would be

IMTKD KICKING CANCER FOR A CAUSE

everyone in the same place at the same time (to make sure nobody chickened out). So, after a day of training hard, we all relaxed into a fun filled

hour or so of shaving heads! We were lucky enough to have Kelli from Kelli‟s Place Hair Design in Kenilworth, donate her time to come and

help out with our shave event, and make sure we didn‟t need to call an ambulance because we‟d cut someone‟s ear off.

Up first was Lee, who braved a gauge 2 haircut all over. As the hair was coming off, the tears flowed. Not because she was losing her hair, after

all, it will grow back…..but because she was reflecting on all the struggles Michael & those around him had gone through, & the strength he had

shown. Lee was followed by myself with a side undercut, Jaz with a back undercut, and Ryan, Jason, Blair & John, who all went down to bare

clippers. We then had a couple of late entries, with Chief Instructor, Peter Cameron, shaving his head, also to show his support, & because at that

point, our team had raised over $5000, and Ormeau Instructor Troy Johnson joining in too. What a fantastic way to finish the day!

The next morning, apart from getting up in time for the 6.00am stretching session & rubbing each others stubble, I was surprised that Lee was

asking around for a plastic bag to put all the shaved off hair in that she was collecting up off the ground. I should‟ve realized that Lee would see

more in it than just “hair”. When asked why she was collecting it, she said “there‟s too much Black Belt spirit in it to just leave it there”. So the

plan with the hair? When Lee gets a chance, she‟s going to try and make a Black Belt doll with the hair inside. Just imagine the fighting spirit

that little doll will have in it!

So as we all focus now on how long it will take for our hair to grow back, or hope that it will even grow back at all (John), we can be proud of

ourselves for the funds that we‟ve raised for the Leukaemia Foundation, and those that they support, and we can be thankful that Michael has

recently been given the news that he is now in complete remission (although his treatment continues in the way of weekly blood transfusions and

huge anti-rejection medication). To date, the IMTKD Kicking Cancer for a Cause team RAISED A WHOPPING $6474.30, but there is still a

few last minute $‟s to come. We would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to all those who took part in the shave, those that sponsored people

taking part, those that donated time to help out in any way, and those that donated prizes for the raffle. Without you all, we wouldn‟t have

achieved what we did, and I know Michael is very grateful for all the support he has received from the IMT family.

Welcome to 2014, it has only just begun,

but we are well under way with many great

events already under our col-

We have had an awesome out-

the ladies unleashed self de-

camp for 2014, the shave for a

cure fundraising event, the first

round of AMAC and now the grading has

just come and gone.

But seriously, he‟s been doing a great job

helping out at class, so thanks Jas!

I‟m looking forward to the upcoming tour-

nament series, Redcliffe finished well last

year to beat the ever strong Kallangur club

and „de-throne‟ them after 4 years of retain-

ing the trophy. We will be doing or best to

retain the trophy this year. It will be a hard

ask as well, with such strong competition

from all of the other clubs.

In closing, I would like to wish everyone a

great year of training, and I look forward to

seeing everyone in the organization achiev-

ing their goals, and I hope I can help you to

achieve those goals throughout the year.

training! Maybe I should have a little sit

down while I can before the rest of the year

hits us like a turning kick to the head!

Redcliffe has got off to a good start, picking

up where we left off at the end of 2013.

We have some new white belts join our

every growing army of white belt ninjas. I

suppose that makes me the

evil and devious black ninja.

Yeah… that sounds about

right.

It‟s been hard work getting

everyone back into the swing

of things and ready for grad-

ing. “Other” Jason has been

a great help getting the white belts ready

while I sit at my evil throne, overseeing my

minions. (gee, I‟m really getting into this

LADIES UNLEASHED SELF-DEFENCE WORKSHOP

Late last month we conducted our inaugural self defence

workshop for ladies at Troy‟s gym in

Burpengary. (Thank you, Troy!) We had a wonderful

roll up of ladies (and girls) eager to take charge of their

own personal safety. Tremendous feedback was given

and it is hoped that we will offer these workshops again

in the near future. IMT‟s World‟s Greatest Shave

fundraising efforts were boosted as a result of the

nominal workshop fees. My thanks to all the

instructors and black belts who gave up their Saturday morning to assist. A special mention goes to Kathy

Pascoe for her outstanding efforts towards organising a

truly great raffle. Thanks, Kathy! Thanks to Lyn

Robinson for her great cup-cakes too.

Please stay tuned for further Ladies Unleashed self defence

workshops.

Thank you to all who attended the all-ranks

training session on Bribie. It was great seeing

you get a bit of sand between your toes.

Best wishes to all clubs for a great year. We look

forward to welcoming you all back to the island

for the July IMT Tournament.

Warm greetings from the young Bribarians at

the Bribie Island Club. Our club is well and truly

back into form after an extended holiday period.

Just through word of mouth, we have already

welcomed three new members to our team,

Jacinta, Aidan and Conner and of course, their

families. On behalf of the Bribie club and IMT

as a whole, we wish these newest members a

wonderful journey through the ranks towards

ultimately achieving their Black Belt.

Apart from training in our usual curriculum,

we‟ve been having a bit of fun with wooden

weapons‟, kicking games with balloons and

trying to extinguish a small candle with power-

ful punches.

As an instructor, I am very proud of everyone in

our club, particularly when members develop

and apply their confidence and determination in

other areas such as their education. I wish to

congratulate Ella Bradford and Victoria Spriggs

who have both become school captains of their

respective schools on Bribie Island. Both girls

have gained immensely in self-confidence

and striving to become leaders at school, and

hopefully in life, is a most worthy pursuit. Well

done, girls!

I am sure you have all heard your instructors

telling you time and time again to "Stay light on

your feet". And you have probably even heard

the famous words of Muhammad Ali "Float like

a butterfly, sting like a bee". These words are

very important within martial arts as it underpins

the foundation of your sparring. A martial artist

who is light on their feet is able to move faster,

react quicker, create more angles, strike more

efficiently and counter attacker more effective-

ly.

When it comes to the actual movement it is im-

portant that you do not walk or cross your legs.

Each movement should be a slide by pushing off

the opposite foot. Always remain relaxed as this

will keep your movements smoother and ulti-

mately faster.

It is important to always practice being light on

your feet and getting the movements correct so

they become muscle memory. Set-sparring gives

you a good opportunity to practice this as you do

not need to focus on defending at the same time.

As you improve remaining light on your feet,

you will see significant improvements across all

areas of your training.

There are several important factors required to

be light on your feet. First you must be in a cor-

rect sparring stance. Have your feet one shoulder

width apart with your feet slightly turned to the

side. Ensure your rear foot is not directly behind

your forward foot. Slightly bend both knees, and

have your weight on the balls of your feet so

your heels are slightly off the ground. It is very

important to make sure your weight is in the

middle of your sparring stance. This will give

you better balance and allow you to move faster

as you will not have to shift all your weight to

move your leg.

self defence) and by now everyone had worked up a mighty

sweat and a mighty hunger, so we took some time out for

lunch, but not too much time, there are only so many hours

in a day and we had a lot more training to get through.

We now switched to grading mode, with the next 2 sessions

focusing on patterns and set sparring. During the set sparring

session, we got to practice some of the takedowns and other

techniques we had learnt and got to apply them in a more

practical setting. Repetition is the key to re-enforcing new

techniques. As a challenge for those who attended the camp, try remember all of the sessions and what we covered in each

one. It will be very hard to do, but as you try, you will start

to remember things you have already forgotten. NOW GO

PRACTICE IT!!

It has been a while since we have done a circuit at a camp, so

it was high time we did one! Joe and Robert put us through

Training camps are so much fun, there is always lots new

things to learn and much enjoyment to be had over the week-

end. Of course we don‟t mess about so on Friday night, we

got straight into it with a session to develop our kicking skills

from the ground. Just because your not standing up, doesn‟t

mean you still can‟t kick someone in the head!

We were up early Saturday morning for a warm up stretch,

oiling the joints and warming the muscles for a day of hard

training to come. After fuelling up with breakfast, we were straight onto the floor at 9am, and I mean straight onto the

floor, as the first session of the day focused on takedowns.

After an hour of being thrown onto the floor, we moved onto

a 2 hour self defence session. Everyone got time to refine

the defences for the grading, and learn a few new ones along

the way. The 2 hours flew by so quickly (as is the way with

CAMP KENILWORTH

our paces to finish the day of training . By the end of it all, we were needing a well earned break. Some paid their dollar for a

high pressure hot shower, others paid their 4 dollars for a swim in the local pool adjoining the grounds, with the super sweet

slide!

When 5.30pm rolled around we all gathered to watch the fundraising team for the worlds greatest shave finally get their luscious

locks removed for a worthy cause. For more info on this event, please read the article on page 3 for the full report.

Monster burgers called out for the brave few at the local pub as well as a few drinks and games of pool. For others it was the call

of the pillow that held the greater appeal, and so ended the first day at camp Kenilworth.

When the sun came up, we weren‟t far behind it, another early morning stretch to ease our way into the day and to get our sore

muscles working again. With only 3 hours of training left, we crammed in session on ground defence. Earlier in the week, Jason

Parker attended a seminar with one of Australia's most well known martial arts exports Mr Richard Norton. So there were many fun tips and trick to be passed on and practiced. From defending against headlocks, applying locks and holds on the ground, to

simple ways of defending grabs. We all had a great time and learnt a lot of new techniques.

The last session for the camp was an hour of freesparring. All of the lower grades got to spar the Black Belts to learn as much as

they could. Everyone pushed themselves hard, but had fun at the same time. Which is how training camps are supposed to be.

Everyone left having learnt something new and even made some new TKD friends. There will be another all rank camp later in

the year, so if you missed out on this one, there is another opportunity to get involved it what are always described as highlight

of the training year. Hope to see you all at Currimundi in August, but until then, try attend as many all rank training sessions as

you can, and keep training hard!

Hi all and welcome to 2014, it sounds odd writ-

ing that as ¼ of the year is already gone. Train-

ing at Narangba and Murrumba is back into full

swing and just a few changes. For the month of

March the Narangba class has moved as a trial to

the MDT centre at Burpengary.

The move is not permanent yet but so far there

have been no complaints from the parents. A

decision about the club permanently moving will

be made in a few weeks time. If so, there are no

plans to change the club name it will still be

known as Narangba.

This Saturday the Murrumba Downs club has a

stall at the Mango Hill night markets. So any

student who wants to come down after their

The Barron family are going on a 3 week camp-

ing trip to Cairns starting early April, but the

clubs will be left in the capable hands of the

Jacinta‟s (J Manly – Narangba, J Forbes – Mur-

rumba). I hope the Jacinta‟s are not too tough

on the students

Lastly a big thankyou to all those students and

families who donated to the extremely worth

cause of the Leukaemia Foundation, shave for a

cure. Whether it be through the purchase of

raffle tickets or donating under my name. I

managed to raise $756 which I am pretty happy

about…. Plus I got a free haircut.

Unfortunately no room for any training tips, so

as I always tell my students make sure you prac-

tice!!

grading would be appreciated. We will have a

stage demonstration at 5pm. The display will be

at St Benedict‟s primary school, Anzac Ave,

Mango Hill. The markets start at 2pm and finish

at 8pm. Any assistance would be appreciated.

Good luck to Jayda of Narangba who is going

for her first grading on Saturday. However after

spending the entire weekend at the TKD camp at

Kennilworth and learning some pretty advanced

techniques I am sure she will do fine.

Both clubs dropped a few student numbers over

the Xmas break, so will be doing a bit of an

advertising blitz in April so hopefully we will

get some new faces. But if anyone knows of any

families in the Narangba/Burpengary/Murrumba

Downs/Castle Hill/Riverwoods areas that want

to join our great organisation please spread the

word.

G‟day to everyone from the guys at Banyo. What a great and hectic start to the new year it has

been.

Firstly, l would like to welcome all the new IMT stu-

dents into our family, including Tina, Maddison, Oli-

ver, Zeke, Annabelle and Jayden from our class.

With all these new guys so keen to learn and the rest of

the class busting a gut to get to the grading, it has been

a really full on few months.

Secondly, how good was our first train-

ing camp for the year? For those who were able to make it I

hope you really enjoyed every session

and came away completely buggered, with your mind overflowing with new

stuff and looking forward to the next

one. For those unable to attend, you missed

out on something special. Make up for it and make

sure you get to the next one. The difference we, as instructors, see in the students that attend these camps

is truly amazing. Not to mention the great new friends

made from the other clubs.

Oh and BALD IS BEAUTIFUL.

Finally a training tip.

Training in a martial art is not just a 2 night a week thing.

It is like anything worthwhile, the more effort you put

in, the bigger reward you will get out of it. There is so much that can be practiced at home also.

You don‟t need to be in your training hall to practice

patterns, self defence ( I am sure someone at home would be more than happy to grab you around the

throat ), basics and fitness.

Don‟t be afraid to read and/or watch videos of fights and self defence techniques etc and to try them your-

self.

Most importantly, don‟t forget to ASK your instructor if there is something you are unsure of or don‟t under-

stand.

Thirdly I would just like to congratulate all those who took part in “The World‟s Greatest Shave”. You have

all done not just IMT proud but you should all be

holding your heads high. This is an extremely unself-ish thing you have done and to watch everyone get

their locks chopped really made me so happy to be part

of this wonderful organization/family we call IMT.

To all those that sponsored these fine “baldies (or part

baldies) also a very big thank you and to those that

bought and or sold raffle tickets for the cause, we couldn‟t have done so well without

you.

A very special thank you must go to Kathy Pascoe for the huge effort she

put in, not only leading and urging

our team on, but to organizing all the raffle prizes, which she managed

to get donated, so as all the funds

raised went to this very worthy cause, selling tickets and running

sausage sizzles. It is very easy to talk about doing

things like this but to actually get out there and put in the effort required and make such a success of it is

another ball game.

WELL DONE EVERYONE.

“...the more effort

you put in, the big-

ger reward you will

get out of it.”
