OCTOBER 2017 EDITION

Hello Everyone, The foundation stones for a balanced success are honesty, character, integrity, faith, love and loyalty. Zig Ziglar If you are thinking of making Kaloma your new home please note that we have 6 vacancies and two respite rooms which are vacant. One of these includes a suite with its own kitchenette and lounge area. All rooms throughout Kaloma are single rooms with ensuites. We are keen to fill these rooms. The respite rooms are for temporary care to give Carers a much needed break so that Unfortunately our 30th anniversary celebrations needed to be postponed due to Kaloma being in lockdown as we had a resident with positive Influenza B and other residents with flu-like symptoms. Again, at the time of writing we are in lockdown from Sunday night 24th September. Hopefully by closing early we can prevent the spread of the virus. Influenza is rife in the community. As I have said many times we have to protect residents as the virus will never start in Kaloma but will be brought in by staff and visitors. I urge everyone in the community to have a flu vaccination if you haven't already. Also, I ask staff to help us urgently by putting your name down for a flu vaccination if you have not already had one - see Reception staff for this and they will make an appointment at Lucy Walker Pharmacy for you. If you wish to have a booster vaccination as I am going to, then Kaloma will pay for this as well. Kaloma pays for staff and volunteers. Please staff or volunteers if you have had a flu vaccination privately then you must inform Kaloma Reception staff as we have to add you to our vaccination rates. Quite a few staff have had a flu vaccine as part of their Chronic Disease Management plan with your GP. We must know about these so that we can keep our statistics up to date to advise the Public

Health Unit. Next year we will be holding the vaccinations on site at Kaloma again. We have a much better turnout when we have done this in the past. Again, I remind everyone who comes to Kaloma to ensure you do not do so when you are unwell. Please do not bring sick children to Kaloma. The community is rife with influenza. Elderly people have suppressed immune systems and catch viruses very easily. Please help us care for the older persons in our care both at Kaloma and in the community by ensuring you stay away if you are unwell and good hand hygiene. Please join us on Saturday 11th November at 10am for our second attempt to hold the Kaloma 30th anniversary celebrations to open the new development and celebrate Kaloma being 30 years of age. The beautiful anniversary book will be on sale then too. As this is Remembrance Day I have checked with the local Veterans Associations Mike Vogler who advised that they are holding their ceremony at 11am at the cenotaph at the Town Park then on to Customs House War Museum. If you wish to purchase one of the lovely 30th anniversary books - the cost is $30 per book and is available from Kaloma Reception. I purchased 6 for family members for Christmas gifts and of course have given one to my Mother as Terry Collins, my father is in the book. If you wish to order a book please contact Kaloma reception on (07) 46711 422 or [email protected]. Brigalow families - as you have just been informed of the new code to get in and out of the wing please remember that you must not give this code out to anyone else as it will be a breach of security and make result in someone unsavoury entering the Wing. Please also do not give out the code to residents as occurred recently. Many thanks for your support with this. Kaloma has been notified that we are a finalist (one of four) in the Prime Super Excellence in Care Awards to be held in Brisbane on 18th November 2017. It is great just to be a finalist, so here's hoping for success! It reflects not only on Kaloma but every staff member we have. I am pleased to report that rectification works are complete. The blinds for the Warrigal Office have been installed and are closed only when Handover from shift to shift is on to meet the Privacy Act. We continue to recruit staff particularly in the areas of care and lifestyle. We especially need more Registered and Enrolled Nurses and Personal Carers. We now have 110 staff employed on a permanent or permanent part time basis at Kaloma (I was mistaken thinking it was 120). This is the equivalent of 64 full time positions. Kaloma provides training to staff without experience with classes on site on a monthly basis. Can families please assist Bec and her team by completing and returning the form called "The Key to Me" so that we know what residents preferences are for activities. The legislation expects the Lifestyle Team to have this information documented within 5 working days. Quite a few of the new residents / families have not yet returned this information. The form is given out with the application form from me when you apply to Kaloma. Please ask at Kaloma Reception or Bec Heitzmann for a new form if you have misplaced it. At the recent residents meeting the residents indicated that they were very satisfied with the staffing, care, food, cleaning, laundry, grounds and maintenance services as well as

the lifestyle program. Bec and her team will be setting up cards and board games for Warrigal/Brolga residents as there is no lifestyle officers working on a week-end in these two wings. When we are full I hope that Kaloma will be able to afford this goal. We await advice back from the Fair Work Commission as to whether they have accepted Kaloma's proposed Enterprise Bargaining Agreement negotiated with staff representatives. The 3% increase will not be paid until FWC accepts the Agreement and will be back paid to the first full pay fortnight in September. The Agreement lasts for 3 years. I have recently, with thanks to staff for their input, revised the duties lists for Personal Carers to give more consistency to routines. It was agreed that we are doing this on a room allocation basis so that every person on duty has the responsibility for the residents who live in their allocated rooms. This way we can ensure that 'Resident of the Day' and other important tasks are not forgotten. To date feedback from Personal Carers is that they are enjoying the routines. As I always say nothing is set in concrete and I will listen to your input. I am working on the Care Supervisor duties list at this time. We all need to understand that if we do not fulfil our routines then it negatively impacts on how the kitchen, laundry and cleaning staff go about their tasks. Labelling of clothing - should you require your clothing labelled then please speak with Housekeeper Judi Batterham who will arrange for your items to be labelled for a cost of $1.00 (one dollar) per item. We have the label machine on site but the labels have to be ordered. Our goal is to ensure that residents clothing including personal rugs are marked with your name so that nothing is lost. Understandably residents can become upset if clothing/personal items are not returned however laundry staff are washing clothing for almost 80 residents and cannot possibly know who to return unnamed clothing to. Please assist us to continue our quality service to you by ensuring your clothing is labelled. Staff once again, please ensure that you check through residents pockets before sending any item of clothing to the laundry. Just in this past week two wallets have gone through the wash. At times we have had very expensive spectacles and hearing aids go through. Check pockets before putting in laundry skip !! Residents can I ask please that you allow any out of date food in your rooms or fridge to be discarded by staff. Out of date food can cause food poisoning and make you very ill. Also family and friends bringing in food please remember to record the food in the Food Register located at the sign in desk. You must avoid bringing chicken and egg products to residents. All food must be stored in a container with a lid please. We await the outcome of a grant application to hold the Montessori Method of Care training at Kaloma and for the Music and Memory program. Lisa Gardoll is the Music and Memory Coordinator and reporting amazing results with a number of residents. Very exciting however is that in November Bec Heitzmann, Lisa Gardoll and I attend a conference in Sydney about the Montessori Method. Good news also is that I was asked to apply for and have been appointed to a National Panel to examine the costs driving residential aged care and to provide advice regarding the cost of care and resource allocation. The panel will be reporting to the University of Wollongong. I will be going to Canberra around 2 monthly to participate and put the represent the views/experiences of Rural and Regional Qld. A big task indeed.

Visitors and contractors are reminded that you are not permitted to smoke cigarettes on Kaloma grounds due to the changes in Smoking legislation. Residents are allocated a smoking area at the pergola on the golf course side. Staff can only smoke at the back of the Staff Room and are not permitted to smoke where food is consumed. Residents who smoke cigarettes are required to purchase a fire retardant smoking apron as part of our safety program. These cost around $90 each. We are in our 14th year of the monthly Staff Awards which recognise the achievement of staff and how staff have implemented / met Kaloma's Mission over the past month of nominations. This Award is nominated by other staff who recognise the efforts of their colleagues. The Achievement Award goes new Personal Carer Kylie Wilcox whilst the Encouragement Award was won by new Personal Carer Brooke Fisher. Well done both. Winners respectively win a $50 and $30 gift voucher. All nominees go into the ‘hat’ at the staff Christmas Party to win the 2 night stay at the Boulevard Towers at Broadbeach. The comments made about each employee are collated and placed in a folder and put in the staff room for staff to read as well as on the notice board each. There are so many wonderful people working at Kaloma so please remember to nominate them. A reminder to older persons in our community - despite Kaloma building another 30 beds, I implore you to consider your future care needs. So many times over the years I have heard older people say "I will never go to Kaloma" - yet once here many have commented "I wish I had come sooner, I didn't realise it could be like this'. At Kaloma we value your independence, your individual personality, your likes and dislikes. I urge you to participate in your end of life planning and tell your family what YOU want to happen to you. This not only takes the emotional pressure off your family but empowers you to know that your wishes will be respected. Please be part of the planning process. Also, just because your name may be on Kaloma's waiting list this does not mean you have to accept the next vacancy. Those persons with the highest need irrespective of financial status, will be offered the next vacancy. By being part of the decision making process about your life it takes the pressure off your family to have to make the decision for you. If you need assistance to make a referral to the My Aged Care portal then I am only too happy to assist you. Please make an appointment with me, bring along your pension and medicare card and it will just take a few minutes. The Aged Care Assessment Team (ACAT) will come to your home and assess you there. Plan ahead, be part of the decisions that affect you is my message. For those older persons wanting Kaloma to provide support to you in your own home through our home care package program please tell the ACAT assessor that you want Kaloma to deliver your care. Otherwise your information will be put onto the system for any provider including those from out of town to contact you. Our home care program is able to service Goondiwindi, Yelarbon and Toobeah. A reminder to anyone who would like to receive this Newsletter by email that you contact Reception or e-mail [email protected]. We are most happy to forward this newsletter to you by e-mail and to as many family members who would like to read it. Penni Roberts, Kaloma's Chief Executive Officer

NEWS FROM COMMUNITY

Hello and welcome to our October edition of the Kaloma chronicle. Hasn't the weather been funny lately one minute its hot the next cold, sunny or blowing a gale As the weather is starting to warm up (or stay chilly) it is important to remember to drink plenty of fluids, wear appropriate clothing, using the air conditioning ,fans or heating and to remember that if you are feeling un well to phone Kaloma and notify coordinator Jo 0411031136 before we arrive at your home to stop the spread of infections. Please if your family members are feeling unwell (upset tummy, have a cough, generally feeling unwell) tell them to stay away from your home until they feel better. The aim of Kaloma's home care program is to assist clients to remain in their own home while enabling and encouraging them to do as much as they are safely able to do for themselves. We are here to offer any help you may need to assist you to remain at home for as long as you can. By excepting a little bit of help when you first need it, will help promote your confidence, conserving your precious energy for the tasks you can perform independently. We would like to remind all our clients that any excess in their budget is carried over each month and the budget can only be used for services we can provide to assist the client to remain in their own homes for example: Personal hygiene, meals, house keeping, laundry, shopping it can also be used to pay for carpet cleaning, cleaning of windows, mowing lawns, gardening, ironing services, physio (as long as the provider has an abn) etc a piece of equipment ie: wheelie walker, mobility scooter, pressure cushions as long as approved by Doctor. It can not be used to pay bills, medication, rents/mortgage, cashed out or used for a holiday. If you exceed your allocated budget amount you will be charged a fee for service. Which is payable in arrears (the following month for services utilised). You will see on your monthly budgets that there is an attached page which tells you how much funds you have in excess or arrears so that you and your family are aware and can track this. If you have any concerns please speak to coordinator Jo & Peta-Sue or alternatively phone Penni Roberts at Kaloma 46711422 who is more then happy to assist you with this also. A few simple ways to help client's stay with in their budget and to avoid been charged the fee for

service is:

• Be ready with your clothes picked out for your shower when staff arrive, finished your

breakfast etc

• Utilise the medico run for all medical appointments,

• Get family members to assist with filling out forms, paying bills, shopping etc

Turning lives around together

Community Corner

• If able to Have washing placed in washing machine and washed when staff arrive to hang out

Or remove the washing from the line,

Continue to do as much as possible for yourself- Staff are here to assist not take over from yourself &

family.

Please note that if you are requiring staff to assist you to Doctors appointments it would be appreciated where possible that you book your appointment for a Wednesday or Thursday between 8.30-13.00 as these are the days that Jo or Peta-Sue are able to assist you to the appointment. Thank you for your understanding.

If you know anyone out in the community who is needing help or may need help down the track now is the time to start future planning. The government through My Aged Care now allocates packages to clients there is a waiting time of when you may receive a package, this can be in excess of 3 months which is a long time to wait if you are needing help now. . Due to our current clients care needs our currently our home care operating hours are Monday to Friday 8.00 am -12.30pm and Weekends 8.00am until 12 midday. If you are requiring assistance to appointments please notify at least 3 weeks in advance to assist with rostering of our staff as the majority of our home care staff members also work in Kaloma. This also applies to changing your respite day. Thank you for your understanding at this time. Coordinator Jo and Ceo Penni Roberts are on call after hours if needed. I (Jo) will be away for 2 weeks at the start of this month, we are having a family holiday to the beach after David attends the national apex convention in Mudjimba hopefully we will have some lovely warm, swimming weather. Peta-Sue will be having a much deserved holiday away in November she is heading to the big smoke of Sydney. Now is the time to also start thinking about what you are going to be doing over Xmas\ new year period A letter will be going out in November enquiring what services you are requiring over the public holidays, Just a reminder that public holidays are charged at a higher rate for service: Flat rate of $160 per hour. If you are going away and need assistance with medication please notify Jo or Peta-Sue as soon as possible so they can assist with making sure you will have ample medication to take with you.

Happy 94th Birthday to Elisabeth Holcombe

We hope you have a lovely day surrounded by family and friends.

Take care

Until next time Take Care Coordinator Jo & Peta Sue, our wonderful Carers June, Larni & Peta B

Brigalow newsletter Welcome to October and to the Warm Weather, The year is really speeding up as we hurtle towards Christmas and the New Year. We will be singing Carols before we know it. September brought us some birthdays, Ron Dalby and Stella Campbell, both who enjoyed their cakes immensely. There was a Garden Party with Wen just because it was a beautiful day. Carl continues to bake bread rolls to eat with the evening meal, We have experimented with some different flavours and types of bread but have decided that Crusty White Bread is our favourite. Plans for October include continued Gardening and spending time outside before it becomes too hot.. Our sugar snap peas are producing so well and the cherry tomatoes are growing a mile a minute.. We are starting our preparation for Melbourne Cup Day looking for a colour theme and some ideas to decorate our home for the Race that Stops the Nation. Fashions on the field is a must with a parade of our finest hats and fascinators. If anyone is attending "The Cup " this year, some updates and Late Mail from Flemington would be most welcome. Carol Burcher was there last year and sent us many photos and texts which really helped build the excitement. Tilly continues to visit with Astrid, cadging biscuits and treats from residents, giving lap warms and cuddles in return. She has had a few too many treats and has had to get a larger harness. Stay safe, cool and happy, Love From Astrid, Lisa, Wen, Jacqui, and the girls in Brigalow

Hello to everyone I think the warm weather is on its way............I would like to tell that there was rain on its way!!? its so dry everywhere so lets hope the skies open up soon. Our month had a slow start to it as we were in lock down for eight days however so worth it as we are all well and happy now. Everyone managed the lockdown so well. The opening was postponed, until the 10th November. However has everyone bought their 30 year anniversary book? its stunning I love it and yesterday we read each resident that was at activities story from the book. We loved the stories and learnt things about each other that we didn't know.....Everyone involved in making the book happen should be proud. We have been very busy doing the daily chores of life like folding the aprons, I think now we are up to over 300 aprons each morning it is like a factory!!! May have to do the silver as it is starting to look like it needs some loving we are happy to spread the love if anyone would like some of their silver polished. We say goodbye to Katie Gibson at the end of this month we look forward to Katie's return, and hopefully she will bring her healthy baby with her for us to spoil.....We wish you all the best Katie ....... Weve made more and more marmalade and need to make more!!! Barb made everyone's favourite MELTING MOMENTS that didn't hit the ground......one minute the jar was full the next empty........ A massive thankyou to Weengallon Pink Ladies for taking the time to bring all those stunning flowers in for us to enjoy, they looked beautiful throughout the building and were a great talking point. So thankyou again and a huge congratulations on your day! Then weve had another visit from new comers to the Get Set For Work program based at the Goondiwindi Training Centre who were here the day that all the flowers arrived so extra hands made very light work, with helping put the flowers into vases with the residents. Good luck with the future to those participants I think two of the boys were hoping to be lucky enough to be offered a building apprenticeship. The buggy has been in high demand such fun .......... as you will see by the photos.

Lifestyle Officer Bec Heitzmann

CHOOSE TO BE HAPPY

Bingo is bigger than ever we have a huge roll up in the Coolabah Lounge on Monday mornings thankyou to our volunteers who make this happen. We will have Bingo on the October long weekend if anyone would like to come and play with us we would love it. To Kay, Father Michael, Jackie and Kath thankyou for our Church services. Thankyou to Anna Scudamore for playing the violin this morning at Mass it was beautiful. Anna'a children for being such littles angels while their Mum played. Allan Fairbanks is back ....... and one of our residents is over the moon that her request was for him to learn "Its a long way to Tipperary" and what do you know He did and I think Allan may have had to play it several times when he came this week Thankyou Allan and Sue as Im sure you are aware you are famous in our eyes!! Its a town tour next Friday , Faye and Sue are coning to play cards with our card sharks so who is choosing to do which activity??? Annabelle (on the housekeeping staff) is bringing her Karaoke machine in on one of her days off, Im not sure who is more excited her or the residents so that should be fun............ Also our new wings each have a gorgeous fruit bowl (donated by Kay Rhodes) in the kitchens, with fruit for our residents if you would like to add to this feel free..... we are encouraging residents to help themselves to the fruit. This has proven benefits...... We've also had regular visits from the "Red Cross" Angels

ELAINE'S ART THERAPY THURSDAYS

We would like to try and build up our volunteer base, if anyone knows of anyone that would like to come and play with us we would love it. Just pick up a volunteer package from Clair at the front desk and once your police check is complete the fun can begin. Each month Illorn Gibson from the town library comes to Kaloma, Illorna leads a reading group with the residents. Illorna is amazing and engages the residents so much so that they are often still talking about it the next day. Often there are varying topics such as the history of Goondiwindi etc Illorna would love to see some family members come and join with these groups. If you look on our planner each month you will see the days that Illorna comes. We are trying for Tuesday week 2 of each month for Brolga/Warrigal. Thankyou to all our Volunteers where would we be with out you. We are truly grateful...... We are so lucky and will always be grateful for this fabulous community that we live in.

You may have noticed that our residents wear name badges.....this is a step in the Montessori world, it enables people with memory loss, the ability to hold conversations by calling people by name! this brings confidence to their conversation, as well as enhances their self esteem. Also we now have a lot of new staff, and residents. Our residents love wearing them.... so its a win win for all....... We are aiming for an even bigger win, asking family and friends that are regular visitors if they would be willing to purchase a name badge and wear it when you visit??? I think they are approx $8.00 each.

We say goodbye to June Corish, Victor Cloey, Ellen Farrell, Thelma Strong, our thoughts and prayers are with the families at this time Just before I finish up this newsletter, Lifestyle are struggling with getting our "Key to Me's back from families, this is a form that is now in your package...(or we have plenty of spare) this form provides information that is a very important tool, that we use to build our programs, bond with our residents etc and legally a Care plan for each resident has to be in the system within five days of the resident moving in.... so I ask pleeeease can we have your family members "Key to Me" as soon as possible? and on that bossy note I will say goodbye for this month.

Be safe and happy Love your work Bec and the lifestyle team xx

with Lisa Gardoll

Hello everyone

Welcome to October. The year is certainly humming along fairly

rapidly.

This month's theme includes interesting fun facts about some

favourite tunes and an adored artist.

How much is that Doggie in the window? Who can't help but

love this good feeling song, Woof, Woof! This Aussie favourite

was written in 1952 by Bob Merrill and recorded by Patti Page.

Australia loved this song and in August 1953 it was Number 1

on the charts.

Michael, Row the boat ashore is an American folk song which

has a long history, with lyrics written in 1867 during the

American Civil War era.

You are my Sunshine is also a great favourite. Jimmie Davis

recorded the song in 1940 and the world was introduced to this

well-loved tune which was named the 14th Song of the Century

by the Recording Industry Association of America.

Known as the "Forces' Sweetheart", Dame Vera Lynn was born

in 1917 and celebrated her birthday earlier this year in March.

During the 1940's she hosted her own BBC radio program,

Sincerely Yours. In 2009, aged 92 years, Vera once again

topped the UK album charts with a Best of Vera Lynn "We'll

Meet Again". The Vera love spread to new generations as Pink

Floyd sang about her in their iconic The Wall album. So many

songs and what a voice. Thank you Vera.

Have a great month.

Lisa.

Unfortunately our clinical system SARAH does not allow staff to access the quality logs to

see what action has been taken. Quality Coordinator Mary Hilton attempts to give personal

feedback to staff who have submitted a quality log. Hence the inclusion some months ago of

this section of the quality report to give feedback to staff in writing on a monthly basis.
