TIDBITS® INVESTIGATES THE

KENTUCKY DERBYby Kathy Wolfe

And they’re off! Every year, the first Saturday in May marks “The Most Exciting Two Minutes in Sports,” the annual Kentucky Derby. Tidbits offers some fascinating facts about the “Run for the Roses,” a contest for three-year-old thoroughbred horses held every year since 1875.

• Construction on the racetrack now known as Churchill Downs was begun in Louisville, Kentucky in 1874. It was the brainstorm of Meriwether Lewis Clark Jr., the grandson of William Clark of the Lewis and Clark expedition. Clark leased 80 acres of land from his uncles John and Henry Churchill, and raised $32,000 for constructions costs by selling membership subscriptions to the track for $100 each.

KENTUCKY DERBY (continued):• When race fans showed up for the 1895 event,

they were met by a brand-new grandstand featuring the Twin Spires. A 24-year-old draftsman designed the Spires, which have become a familiar landmark to the Derby crowd.

• At a party hosted by a socialite following the 1883 Derby, all the ladies were presented with roses. Track founder Meriwether Lewis Clark was in attendance and it’s believed he conceived the idea of declaring the rose the race’s official flower from that experience. But it wasn’t until 1896 that a bouquet of pink and white roses was first presented to the winner, and it was 1932 before the garland of roses we see today was introduced. The term “Run for the Roses” was coined by a sports columnist in 1925. The blanket of roses bestowed upon the owner of the winning horse is composed of more than 500 red roses sewn onto a green satin backing. In addition, the jockey receives 60 long-stemmed roses wrapped in 10 yards of ribbon. Owners frequently have the garland of roses freeze-dried to preserve it, and some even have a flower dipped in silver in commemoration of the win.

• The two-minute mark has only been broken three times in Derby history, the first time in 1973 by the famed Secretariat. Nicknamed “Big Red,” the chestnut finished the course in 1:59.40, a record that still holds today as the fastest time ever. The second horse to finish in under two minutes was just a length and a half behind Secretariat. Sham, who was Secretariat’s dark brown half-cousin, had hit his face on the starting gate and knocked out a tooth. Although he bled severely throughout the race, Sham came in about one-fifth of a second behind the winner. The Derby was without an under-two-minute winner until 2001 when Monarchos finished in 1:59.97.

• During the early 1900’s, owners of Derby-winning horses began sending their thoroughbreds to Maryland’s Preakness Stakes and the Belmont Stakes in New York. Although it wasn’t officially called the “Triple Crown” until 1930, the first winner of all three races was in 1919, a chestnut named Sir Barton. There have only been 11 Triple Crown

ARIes (March 21-April 19): Concentrate on aspirations rather than ambitions in the early part of the week. Hold off implementing investment strategies. You might be faced by an unexpected bill or added duties at an inconvenient time.TAURUs (April 20-May 20): Frustrated desires may be a signal that you are heading down the wrong path. For the best results, steer clear of confrontations and keep your nose to the grindstone in the first half of the week.GeMINI (May 21-June 20): You can’t always fly by the seat of your pants. Accuracy could be essential in the week to come. Count on solid support and good advice, especially if caught up in a whirlwind of changes.CANCeR (June 21-July 22): Mary had a little lamb whose fleece was white as snow. Avoid problems by not associating with people who spread dirt. The early part of the week is not a good time to enter into agreements.Leo (July 23-Aug. 22): Accept the good, the bad and even the ugly with good grace. Don’t make irrevocable judgments about people or key decisions about financial matters early this week. Logical thinking is your key to success.VIRGo (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): The first half of the week is not a good time to strike bargains, make major purchases or have machinery repaired. Hold off on decisions that could affect your financial condition.LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): No one is hiding the truth under a rock. You suspect the worst of someone when you don’t receive the answer you want. Put major decisions on the back burner, rather than putting your foot down this week.sCoRPIo (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): Be proud of your accomplishments. Ignore that little nagging voice that urges you to do something selfish. Your stamina and ability to cope with emergencies could be tested for a few days this week.sAGITTARIUs (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): Thank your lucky stars for an understanding mate or a helpful friend. Some situations might be exasperating in the early part of the week. Don’t count your chickens before they hatch.CAPRICoRN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): Unexpected policy changes could cause setbacks. You may hear of an opportunity to increase your net worth, but hold off on making your move until things settle down later in the week.AQUARIUs (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): Tiptoe through the tulips. Don’t stir up resentment by taking control without permission. Get plenty of rest so that you can tackle a heavy load of responsibilities in the early part of the week.PIsCes (Feb. 19-March 20): If you can’t trust your eyes and ears, trust your instincts. Some people may surprise you by being cranky or difficult to deal with this week. Employ your powers of understanding to bypass controversy.

JUST JOCKEYSKentucky Derby week seems like the time to take a look at a few of the greatest jockeys of all time. Follow along and pick up a little knowledge about these legends.• Two jockeys share the record for the most

Derby wins, Eddie Arcaro and Bill Hartack, each with five. Arcaro was the first to accomplish this feat, with his first win in 1938 at age 22, followed by victories in 1941, 1945, 1948, and 1952. Arcaro is also the record-holder for the most American classic race wins, and the only rider to win the Triple Crown twice. He triumphed in 17 Triple Crown races, including the five Derbys, and six each in the Preakness and Belmont Stakes. As a small youth, rejection for a spot on the baseball team pushed him to excel in a different area. He stood just 5’2” (1.6 m) when fully grown. At the 1959 Belmont Stakes, Eddie seemed destined for his 7th win, but his horse fell and Eddie was thrown into a large puddle of water and was narrowly saved from drowning. Riding helmets had very recently been introduced to the sport and Arcaro claimed his had saved his life. His lifetime record was 4,779 wins.

• Bill Hartack won his first Kentucky Derby in 1957 at age 24. He was favored to win the next year, but just two weeks before the Derby, he broke his leg and another jockey rode the horse Tim Tam, who won the race. Hartack was the nation’s leading jockey four different times, and was the first to attain $3 million purse winnings in a year.

KENTUCKY DERBY (continued):winners, including Secretariat, who took the

prize after a 25-year drought, setting records in all three races. There were back-to-back Triple Crown winners in 1977 (Seattle Slew) and Affirmed in 1978. There hasn’t been one since.

• On those occasions when two or more horses are in a dead heat and it’s impossible to see which crossed the line first, a “photo finish” is needed to determine the winner. The first time this was used at the Kentucky Derby was in 1947, when a photo at the finish line concluded that Jet Pilot was the winning horse.

• For almost 100 years, the mint julep has been the traditional beverage of the Derby. Each year, 120,000 juleps are served on Derby Weekend at Churchill Downs, requiring more than 10,000 bottles of Early Times Kentucky Whiskey, 1,000 lbs. (454 kg) of fresh mint, and 60,000 lbs. (27,215 kg) of ice. Spectators can expect a price of $11 per glass. Along with the juleps, a thick stew called Burgoo is traditionally served, a concoction of a mixture of meats, including pork, beef, chicken, and mutton, along with vegetables and barbecue sauce.

• In 1932, an 18-year-old jockey named Eugene James rode Burgoo King to victory at both the Derby and the Preakness. Sadly, just a year later, the young athlete drowned in Lake Michigan.

• The 1944 Derby winner was named Pensive and the victor in 1949 was Ponder. What was unusual about these two steeds? Pensive was the sire of Ponder and both horses won the Derby with the exact same time, 2:04.20. Ponder went on to sire the 1956 Derby winner, Needles.

• Until 2005, only the first four finishers received a share of the Derby’s purse money. The rules were then changed to award a potion to the fifth-place winner as well.

• The Derby has had a number of notable firsts. It was broadcast live on the radio for

JUST JOCKEYS (continued):

• Standing just 4’11” (1.5m) tall and weight 96 lbs. (43.5 kg), Willie Shoemaker was just 17 when he rode a horse in a race for the first time. Although he finished fifth in that first race, by his third race, he was in the winner’s circle. By week two, he had won seven races. He won his first Kentucky Derby in 1955 at age 23, and his second four years later. It would be six years before his next Churchill Downs victory, but Willie wasn’t finished yet. Twenty-one years later in 1986, Shoemaker won his fourth and final Derby at age 54, making him the oldest Derby winner in history. Although he had won 11 Triple Crown races over the course of four different decades – four Derbys, five Belmont Stakes, and three Preakness Stakes – he never achieved the Crown itself. He set a world record with 8,833 winning races, and accomplished the amazing feat of winning six races in one day, six different times in his career. Shoemaker retired in 1990 and tragedy struck just one year later when his vehicle plunged off a 50-foot embankment, leaving him paralyzed from the neck down. He still managed to succeed as a horse trainer until 1997.

KENTUCKY DERBY (continued):the first time in 1925, with the first national

television coverage occurring in 1952. The size of the purse topped the $100,000 mark for the first time in 1954. (This year, the purse will be $2,180,000, with $1,240,000 of that amount awarded to the winner.) In 1968, Dancer’s Image became the first winner to be disqualified after traces of drugs were found in its system. The Derby’s first woman jockey was Diane Crump who rode Phantom in 1970. Diane came in 15th out of 17. Jockeys were allowed to wear advertising logos on their silks for the first time in 2004.

• More than 165,000 people attended the 2012 Kentucky Derby, setting an attendance record. Tickets can be had for as little as $80 for general admission or as much as $5,000.

Proper car care will protect your hard earned investment

(NC)—As Canadians put away their snow blowers, hats and gloves, there is no better time to protect their vehicle, which for most people, is their second largest investment. The harsh winter weather can take its toll, so proper cleaning and maintenance are key to staying on the road and not in the repair shop.

To help prepare for those spring showers and changing road conditions, here are simple tips drivers should perform to keep their vehicles running efficiently this road trip season:

Change in Temperature Means Change in Inflation –Proper tire inflation is essential for increased automotive safety, optimum driving performance and significant cost savings, including better fuel efficiency (www.goodyear.ca). Tires should be inflated to the vehicle manufacturer recommendations printed on the vehicle door placard or in the glove box and should be checked monthly. Improper inflation can lead to premature or irregular tire wear, and under-inflation reduces a vehicle’s fuel efficiency by an average of 3.3 percent.

Change Your Car’s Shoes – Now is the time to change tires from winter to summer or all-season, if you haven’t already. And for those in need of new tires for their vehicle, each tire in the Goodyear Assurance family meets the needs of drivers by offering confident all-season traction plus a relevant benefit that enhances the driving experience. This product lineup includes Assurance ComforTred Touring with refined handling and comfort, Assurance TripleTred All-Season with ultra-traction, and Assurance Fuel Max with fuel efficiency.

Breathe Free – You may be deeply breathing in that fresh spring air, but your car could still be choking on the salt, dust and sand it sucked in over the winter. Replacing your air filter improves air flow to the engine and increases engine performance and fuel efficiency, especially during warmer months.

For more helpful car care advice or information on tires for cars, minivans, trucks, SUVs and more, take charge of the road this spring and visit your local Goodyear store or go online to www.goodyear.ca.

Scott,I enjoy reading your weekly poker column in the Sun Sentinel down here in South

Florida. I am fairly new to poker, having been playing for about three months.I feel as if most hands shouldn’t be folded until I see the flop. You never know how

potentially good the two cards in your pocket are until at least seeing the first three poolcards. But I can’t stand having to spend a lot of money in order to see the flop, espe-cially if I’m holding something like 9-10 suited or a pair of 5s.

What are your thoughts on seeing the flop before folding most hands — even if thatmeans betting before the flop?

— Russ

Dear Russ,One of the most troubling things for me when I’m teach-

ing new players the game is that there are infinite ways toapproach the strategy and theories of poker. My method ofcoaching encourages new players to “learn how to learn.”

I want to teach novice players in a way thatallows them to learn the advanced “thinking”concepts of poker on their own. There is an ele-ment of the game that is unteachable. However, once the fundamental building blocks are inplace, a new player can begin to grasp moreadvanced poker strategy.

When I first started playing poker, the maingame was limit hold ’em. If you stand around alimit hold ’em game long enough, you’ll hear somebody say, “Any two can win,” or,“You can flop the nuts with any two cards.” A player might hold 8♣ 3♥ and flop comesout 8♠ 8♥ 8♦. There is a 1 in 9,800 chance of that occurring, or about 0.01 percent.

You want to be the guy saying, “You gotta be in to win,” not the guy actually believ-ing it.

Every beginner should study the analysis of poker odds on the Web page www.home-pokergames.com/odds.php, especially if you’re the guy saying, “I would have won thatpot with my J-6 offsuit.” This site details the steps that need to be taken to do the mathyourself. It’s imperative that you understand the process and not just the answer.

Take note of how unlikely it is to actually hit the flop. When I started to play cashgames, I found myself playing many, many hands. I soon came to the realization thatwhile the average strength of a winning hand seemed to be one pair, I was only com-fortable risking a lot of money with two pair or better. When I learned that the chancesof flopping two pair are a measly 2 percent, I knew it was time to tighten up my gameand make some changes.

My first order of business was to find a way to win pots without actually hitting myhand (i.e., bluffing). That’s one way to turn the odds in your favor. The best way to dothat is by taking advantage of late position. “Position, position, position!” is anothercommonly heard poker cliché, but this one holds water. Begin to curb the desire to seea lot of flops in hopes of making a big hand. Instead, use your late position to make anaggressive move at the pot when your opponents check to you. This type of adjustmentwill turn the odds of winning a hand in your favor.

When you don’t have the luxury of late position, take time to evaluate the chances ofimproving your hand, and make sure you’ll have the opportunity to win additionalmoney later in the hand if one of your cards (outs) comes up. In other words, the rewardof drawing has to meet the risk of your investment.

Jackson, 292208, is a 1 year old neutered male American Fuzzy Lop rabbit cross who came to the shelter because her owner could not care for him properly. Jackson is a very friendly rabbit; however he does not like to be picked up. He loves to spend time out of his cage and rabbits do need at least 2 hours out to be able to stretch and play. Jackson can be a little shy to start but once he gets to know you he will hop right up for pets and affection. He will also eat from your hand. Rabbits do require a lot of hay throughout the day and should have about 2 cups of fresh lefty greens. They also enjoy bok choy, parley, dandelion leaves and broccoli stems. They can live up to 12 years.

Pixie, 294176, is a 4 year old spayed female American Staffordshire Terrier and Mastiff cross who was brought to the SPCA because her owner had too many dogs. Pixie can by shy and uncomfortable when meeting new people,

places and objects. She’ll need to be introduced to these things slowly. Pixie will need an owner to give her continual encouragement and gentle handling. Once given the chance to warm up to people she is very friendly and affectionate. She may want to chase

moving things like bikes, animals or children. Good obedience and a confident guardian is important as she’s still learning. Pixie can be nervous around other dogs and would be best suited to a home with no other dogs. She should be introduced slowly to dogs and rewarded for relaxed behaviour and play. A behaviour counselling session with our Adoption Staff is necessary before adopting any animal to ensure success in the new home.

Q: My Sheltie has been shaking her head and scratching her ears. I’ve cleaned out her ears, but the shaking continues. Any advice? - C.B., Cyberspace

A: “All dogs occasionally scratch their ears or shake their heads,” suggests Dr. Mike Cavanaugh, executive director of the American Animal Hospital Association. “Most dogs have a nice pale pink color inside their ears. If you see red, moist skin around the ear canal opening and on the pinnae or flap of the ear, there may be an infection which veterinarians typically call otitis externa. “Another clue: There may be an infection if there’s a strong,

foul odor emanating from the ears. In veterinary school, we take microbiology to learn about the various bacteria and yeast organisms that can cause such infections. There’s a book called ‘Bergey’s Manual of Determinative Bacteriology’ that lists all of these organisms. I remember a professor telling us, ‘Ear canals are the perfect place for these bugs to grow....dark, warm and moist.’ Heck, you could grow ‘Bergey’s Manual of Determinative Bacteriology’ in there!” Since you’ve already cleaned your dog’s ears and that hasn’t solved the problem, it seems pretty clear that it won’t. Cavanaugh strongly suggests seeing your veterinarian to pinpoint what’s going on. The most common problem, overall, is allergies. Cavanaugh adds that once the problem is rectified, “the veterinary team may also discuss ongoing maintenance for the ears, including how to keep them clean and dry, and that’s the best (form of ) prevention for recurring or chronic infections.” By the way, it’s important to know that shaking and scratching may be associated with mild discomfort, but is just as likely to be associated with significant pain.
