Tournament Capital energyK

amloops is the Tournament Capital of Canada, com-

plete with fields, tracks, ice, hills, pools, lakes and

just about anything else related to sports, cultural

and recreational activities.

The city’s vast, rugged landscape provides the perfect setting

for those looking to explore by hiking, mountain biking and

wildlife viewing.

Plus, world-class venues host teams from all over the world,

making the vibrancy of the city readily apparent.

This August, the city will host the 2011 Western Canada

Summer Games. This 10-day event will see hundreds of

athletes competing in the many sports facilities throughout

Kamloops.

In this valuable resource we call the Kamloops Vacation

Guide 2011, you’ll find exciting and unique-to-Kamloops ways

to discover the area — sports- and non-sports-related

With more than 2,000 hours of sunshine annually, you’ll

want to get outdoors to enjoy the beautiful weather — and you

don’t need to be a high-calibre athlete to do so.

Fast-paced and thrilling adventure exists for those with a

desire to burn some energy.

Explore the endless network of single-track trails on a

mountain bike or plunge down the rapids while whitewater raft-

ing.

Slow things down by hiking in the sagebrush-dotted hills,

golfing on any of the championship courses or visiting one of

the numerous city pools.

For more of a leisurely paced adventure, check out the

downtown core. With its cobblestone sidewalks, restored heri-

tage buildings, grand shade trees, museum, library and art gal-

leries, downtown Kamloops offers an exciting ambiance for all.

The streets are lined with sidewalk cafés and eclectic restau-

rants and events are plentiful.

Take in the Farmers’ Market, the Hot Nite in the City car

show, Music in the Park, Bizarre Bazaar and other exciting fes-

tivals and events.

Elsewhere in this publication, learn about the history of

Kamloops and the region.

Whether you are a longtime resident or a first-time visi-

tor, keep this guide as your personal road map for exploring

Kamloops and the area.

We invite you to let loose and just play!

Rivers runs through itWith more than 1,000 lakes and three rivers run-

ning through the Kamloops region, the only problem a canoe or kayak enthusiast will have is deciding on which stretch of water to spend the day.

For a leisurely paddle, try one of the 200 lakes within an hour’s drive of Kamloops or the smooth waters of the South Thompson River, which is sure to please.

For the more adventurous out there, the Thompson, Adams and Clearwater rivers ensure whitewater spills and thrills.

If you’re looking for a true wilderness experience, try an overnight trip in Wells Gray Park.

Following are a few suggestions:

South Thompson River The South Thompson River has a gentle current, car-

rying you toward the downtown core and on to scenic Kamloops Lake.

Great views of the Thompson Valley, wildlife and, if you time it right, an unbelievable smooth ride on the glass-like surface awaits.

Directions: You can access the South Thompson River from Pioneer Park, located off Lorne Street in downtown Kamloops.

Clearwater-Azure Located in Wells Gray Provincial Park, the

Clearwater-Azure Lakes is an easy circuit trip suitable for novice and intermediate paddlers. This 96-kilometre return trip will take about four or five days.

Camping is allowed at designated sites only. This is a nice, safe paddling trip, but stay close to

shore and watch for storm squalls and winds. Directions: The boat launch is at the south end of

Clearwater Lake, 71 kilometres from Highway 5. The road is paved for 43 kilometres, with a further 28

kilometres of well-maintained gravel road leading to the boat launch.

The mighty river“At the town of Clearwater, the North Thompson

River is joined by one of the most spectacular tributar-ies of the Fraser system. Clearwater River is the cul-mination of an incredible concentration of waterfalls, rapids and chutes, probably the greatest in B.C. It is a world of whitewater and blue lakes protected by one of the province’s largest and finest parks, Wells Gray.”

per year and only 270 millimetres of rain. • The average snowfall is 86 centimetres (33.86 inches)

in the city area and up to 559 centimetres (17 feet) at nearby Sun Peaks, Canada’s third-largest ski resort.

Planet Bee Honey Farm is pleased to announce the official opening of “The Meadery at Planet Bee”

The manufacturing of mead, or honey wine, represents the return of an ancient “Beverage of Love” and a new and exciting opportunity for Planet Bee to produce another value added agriculture product and off er it into the competitive global market.

The Meadery at Planet Bee recently won two medals at the 2011 Mazer Cup International held in Boulder Colorado April 2, 2011. These annual awards set the standard for honey wine/mead judging in North America. Planet Bee’s Blueberry Bliss won Silver in the Varietal-Dry category and their Apricot Elixir won Bronze in the Melomel – Dry, other fruit category.

Planet Bee received their Land Based Winery license approval on July 22, 2010 and began their fi rst batch of HONEYMOON MEAD in August. Time for teeKamloops is rapidly becoming the No. 1 destination for

golfers. It used to be the Lower Mainland, Vancouver Island,

Fraser Valley and Okanagan were the hot spots but, with 10 top-class courses in the area, Kamloops is certainly the place to be.

Some of the world’s most-famous golf architects — Robert Trent Jones Sr., Graham Cooke and Robert Heaslip — have designed courses here.

From Tobiano, Talking Rock, Rivershore Golf Estates and The Dunes at Kamloops to Sun Rivers, Sun Peaks, Kamloops Golf and Country Club, McArthur Island and Pineridge, golfers have an amazing array of courses from which to choose.

With prices ranging at about $65 a round, the game is also affordable, especially since greens fees are at least double in the Lower Mainland and Fraser Valley.

An added bonus is golfkamloops.com. This is a service that takes the legwork out of booking. This online tee-times service books everything from greens fees to hotels to res-taurants.

In Kamloops, people can take a water-rafting trip suited to their interests — extreme, casual or novice.

Take a motorized-raft trip or enjoy a paddle trip and really get involved with the river. It depends on how much excitement someone wants.

There are three rivers to raft in Kamloops Country — the Thompson, Adams and Clearwater.

A variety of companies some with 20 years or more experience spend six months a year guiding rafters of all skill levels.

Thompson RiverThose who want to experience the Thompson usually

start at Spences Bridge and end at Lytton, the Rafting Capital of Canada.

Guide your raft through rapids with names like the Frog, the Devil’s Kitchen and the Jaws of Death.

Adams RiverThe Adams, near Shuswap Lake, is a wonderful starting

point for both first-timers and experienced rafters. The Weir, the Ender Waves and especially the Gorge,

where the river spills through a narrow canyon, are breath-taking.

Clearwater RiverRush down the Clearwater in Wells Gray Park, past vol-

canoes, lava rock formations, lush forests and spectacular waterfalls.

The region is an unspoiled wilderness and is one of the best-kept secrets in B.C.

When in Kamloops, hit the trails

The Kamloops-Thompson Valley region is making a case for being the mountain-biking capital of Canada.

Hoodoos, rugged canyons, logging roads, sliders, ramps and kilometres of trails for recreational riding provide ample terrain for both adventure mountain bikers as well as the casual, leisure riders.

Kamloops is the birthplace of freeriding and has been attracting mountain-bike enthusiasts for years.

With the diverse, easy-to-access topography, Kamloops has it all. There is desert-like terrain, single-track courses and high-speed alpine trails.

Away from the city, mountain bikers will want to check out Stake Lake, Inks Lake, Bush Lake and Greenstone Mountain. Closer to town, here are few places to ride:

Have fun horsing aroundJandana Ranch is a family-owned horse ranch nestled in

the mountains 30 minutes northeast of Kamloops at beauti-ful Pinantan Lake.

The ranch offers affordable and peaceful guest-ranch vacations for individuals, couples and families.

It is a 500-acre facility that overlooks beautiful Pinantan Lake and the vistas beyond.

The ranch has more than 45 horses living in a natural setting and roaming the hills in herds.

Horseback riding at Jandana is designed to incorporate the features of open-meadow riding, hills, forested areas and scenic viewpoints.

At Jandana, riding can be enjoyed during all four sea-sons but, regardless of the season, there is always some-thing to see on the trail rides.

The ranch has a play area for the little tykes, as well as volleyball, horseshoes and a fire pit for evening entertain-ment.

Swimming and fishing for world-famous Kamloops rain-bow trout in nearby lakes, hiking, birding and photography can all be enjoyed.

Wildlife is abundant, with coyotes calling at night, loons, sandhill cranes, many species of predatory birds, deer, moose and black bears.

The cabins are fully self-contained, fit five and each has its own porch to provide a great place to enjoy your morn-ing coffee while taking in the view.

It also has limited RV space — reservations are a must for these.

A cozy cabin with all of the comforts of home, great atmosphere, at one of B.C.’s friendliest guest ranches — what could be better?

In addition to its well-known RedLeaf and GoldLeaf services, the train company has added SilverLeaf, a step up from the Red level, that offers a single-level dome coach and seat-side hot-meal service.

SilverLeaf is available on selected trips. While passing vistas, guests can relax and enjoy the

Voted Best Winery in

the North Okanagan

WineriesOf the Shuswap

The Shuswap spirit may also be discovered in its outstanding wineries.

The region’s cool climate wines are produced by six wineries that can compete on par with Canadian and

International wines. The area’s wines include outstanding Gewürztraminers, Merlots, Ortegas, Reislings, and

Siegerrebes, just to name a few, which have all won national awards. These wineries are all family run businesses

that produce distinctive cool climate wines. A tour of the wineries is a must, you’ll be tastefully surprised!

Celista Estate Winery Celista Estate Winery offers a dynamic experience in beauty and wine on the North

Shore of Shuswap Lake. Choose from a variety of six wines or enjoy a glass of wine at the picnic patio

overlooking the south facing, sun drenched slopes of Shuswap Lake, a hidden paradise. Jake and Marg Ootes

look forwardto welcoming you.

Recline Ridge Vineyards and Winery is family-owned and operated, nestled in the Tappen Valley. Although

north of the 50th parallel, their vineyards enjoy sun drenched days and cool evenings which maximize varietal

character and set the stage for the production of award winning wines noted for their clean sound structure,

intense fl avours and perfect balance.

Granite Creek Estate Wines is a family owned vineyard and winery located in Tappen, British Columbia. It is

slightly north of the famed German wine region of the Rheingau. Longer season varieties have been chosen from

the best locations throughout the Okanagan from their contract vineyards to complement their portfolio. All of

the wines are made at their winery in Tappen.

Larch Hills Winery is a land-based, family run vineyard and winery, owned by Jack and Hazel Manser. Their

entire product is proudly made from 100% British Columbia grapes. All their wines are made and bottled on our

premises at Salmon Arm. They specialize in cool climate grape growing, and have varieties that are generally not

available in other parts of BC. We think this makes our wines unique.

OVINO vineyards and winery is perched on a bench well above the valley bottom in the Salmon Valley area

of the Shuswap region. In 2007 a four acre vineyard was planted with four varieties of grapes: pinot gris, pinot

Meunier, Gewurztraminer and the old cold hardy standby Marachel Foch.

Sunnybrae Winery - In 2005 Barry Turner and his wife Nancy, their daughters, husbands and grandchildren

began planting their seven and a half acre lakeside property in fi ve varieties of cool climate grapes. The craftsman

style winery building built in 2010 showcases vintage artifacts and photos of Barry’s family, farmers in the

Sunnybrae area for fi ve generations.
