Kamloops offers visitors and residents an abundance of outdoor recreational activities to enjoy throughout the spring and summer. Our hot, sunny weather drives people to seek their favourite water activities such as swimming, water skiing or simply running through a sprinkler in the backyard.

Many of us can still recall the delight of enjoying the water through childhood, including the ‘rite of passage’ of learning how to swim. For some, the ‘sink or swim’ method was the only available option. Thankfully, since 1946, Red Cross swimming lessons have been a popular choice for many Canadian children. Beyond being fun, learning to swim can have a profound impact on the well being of our children and the health of our community - the life skills learned may

just save a life. How many of you still recall your favourite swimming badge, your best swimming

instructor, or the day you finally achieved your Bronze Medallion? As you venture out to enjoy the water this season we encourage you to always

take a moment to ensure you are prepared to have a fun and safe experience. Be a

positive role model and champion of water safety: always wear a lifejacket when boating, inspect the beach and

water conditions before swimming, ensure your backyard pool is properly

fenced and equipped with safety equipment, don’t mix alcohol with swimming. Swimming is a great fitness activity – one that people can enjoy for a lifetime.

Get out and enjoy our great outdoors!

Deanne Pierson

Be kind to our communityPlease recycle this guide!

Deanne has been working in the aquatics department since 1986. She has fond memories of lifeguarding on hot, sunny Kamloops days at Pioneer Park beach and the old Centennial Pool in Riverside Park. And when Deanne wasn’t outdoors guarding, she especially loved teaching toddlers to swim. This passion came in handy when, as a self-proclaimed ‘lifeguard mom’, Deanne helped her own five children develop a love and respect for the water through safe water play. Mom’s #1 rule at her backyard pool is “to always swim with an adult and never alone”. From babies to seniors, from teaching first aid to organizing special events, it is the day-to-day moments of making a difference for our awesome pool patrons that gives Deanne the most job satisfaction today … and for over twenty-five years and counting.

Community associations are volunteer organizations created and run by people just like you – neighbors who love their neighborhood and want to make it all it can be.

How does the City of Kamloops and your community associations support neighborhoods?

• Provide a place for residents to participate in community planning

• Keep people informed of what is happening in their neighborhood

• Host community celebrations and organize projects that help make neighborhoods beautiful

BACKyARD POOL SAFETyIs there anything more refreshing than a dip in a pool on a hot Kamloops day? Many people in Kamloops have invested in a backyard pool for ‘cool’ summer entertainment. And as fun as they are, backyard pools can be dangerous. Tragically, most drowning and injuries in backyard pools involve children and young adults. Statistics show that children who drown typically gain easy access to the pool or were left unsupervised; whereas young adults suffer serious spinal injuries from diving into water less than 1.5 metres (5 ft.) in depth.

To avoid tragic accidents please remember these simple guidelines courtesy of the Red Cross:• Tell visitors the pool rules• Always supervise pool activity• Use personal flotation devices (PFD’s) – not toys – for support• Encourage feet first entries• Never dive into an above ground pool• Keep safety equipment nearby• Alcohol and pools don’t mix

Good fences are just as important as pool rules – preventing access to your pool could save a life. Check that your fence meets the municipal requirement for height and safety.

Visit kamloops.ca/swim for more backyard safety tips, including a backyard pool safety checklist courtesy of the Lifesaving Society, as well as details on City of Kamloops bylaws pertaining to backyard pools. Whether it’s in your backyard or beyond, we hope that you enjoy a summer full of safe swimming experiences!

An introductory class for babies and their parent or caregiver. To enter this level, babies must be able to hold their head up. The goal of this orientation to water class is to experience buoyancy, movement, entries, and songs and play in the water.

For toddlers or older babies with a parent or caregiver. Toddlers build confidence while enjoying the water through games, songs and active water play.

A transitional level for preschoolers and their parents. Parents can gradually transfer the preschoolers to the care of the Instructor, or, for children 3-5 years old who have not previously taken swimming lessons, Sea Turtle is where they will enter the program. This level develops skills in swimming, glides, and floating and builds awareness of deep water and safe entries.

Preschoolers actively learn new swimming skills including assisted floats and glides through games and songs. The fun includes learning to jump into chest deep water.

Assisted by an Instructor, preschoolers work on stroke and skills progressions. Learning also focuses on good judgement in, on and around the water, and entries and floats in deep water.

Preschoolers start independent glides and kicking in deep water. Endurance is built through increasing distance for front and back swims. Swimmers learn about the dolphin kick and try synchro skills in the water.

In Whale, children will learn to swim independently and participate in team games. Preschoolers will increase their distance and improve skills in front and back swims. Swimmers also learn about throwing assists to help another person in the water.

• Transitional level that transfers the preschooler to the care of the Instruc-tor. All skills are assisted by the Instructor.

• Swimmers enter this level when they are 3 years of age• Using games and activities, swimmers learn to open their eyes under

water, further develop basic floats and glides, and swim 1 metre. They also learn age-appropriate water safety skills.

• Using games and activities, swimmers learn to swim 2 metres, further de-velop basic floats and increase their distance on front and back glide. Front swim and roll-over glide are also included, and swimmers learn appropriate water safety skills such as how to jump into chest-deep water and how to use a Personal Flotation Device (PFD).

• Safety skills development includes water orientation, safe entries and exits and only swimming when an adult is present.

• Using games and activities, swimmers learn to swim 5 metres, increase their distance using buoyant objects, increase their front and back glide with kick, and develop their roll-over glide, side glide and front swim. Safety skills include deep-water skills and use of a PFD.

• Safety skills development such as water orientation, safe entries and exits and always asking for permission before going near the water.

• Through games and other fun activities, swimmers learn to swim 5 metres on their front and back, perform a dolphin kick and begin using rhythmic breathing. They also progress with kicking drills and increase their swim-ming distance to 10 metres.

• Safety skills include jumping into deep-water and performing surface sup-port for 10 seconds, recognizing when a swimmer needs help and using a PFD in deep water.

• Through fun activities, swimmers perform a front and back swim for 10 metres. Swimmers work on developing their flutter kick and perform a distance swim of 15 metres.

• Safety skills include identifying safe swimming areas, jumping into deep water, swimming 5m, surface support for 20 seconds a return to safety, throwing assists and sitting dives.

Swimmers receive an orientation to water and the pool area and work on floats, glides and kicking. Swimmers build their endurance by working on the 5m front swim.

Swimmers work on propulsion skills to move through the water and to remain at the surface. Swimmers work on the front swim (5m) and learn about deep-water activities and proper use of a Personal Flotation Device (PFD). Fitness activities include the 10m flutter kick and a 10m distance swim.

Introduction to diving, and teaches swimmers how to make wise choices about where and when to swim. Endurance is achieved by building strength in the flutter kick and a 15-metre swim.

Introduction to front crawl (10m) and back swim with shoulder roll (15m). Swimmers work on kneeling dives, surface support (45 seconds, deep water) and developing a greater sense of self-safety by understanding their own limits. Endurance is built through a 25m swim.

Introduction to back crawl (15m), sculling skills, whip kick on the back, stride dives and treading water. Front crawl increases to 15m. Introduction to safe boating skills is also included. Endurance is developed through a 50m swim.

Refinement of front crawl with a focus on hand entry and breathing (25m), back crawl with a focus on arm positions and body roll (25m), and introduction to elementary backstroke (15m), safety on ice, and rescue of others with throwing assists. Swimmers demonstrate the front dive and their ability to tread water in deep water for 1½ minutes. Endurance is built through dolphin kick and a 75m swim.

Build skills and endurance for the front crawl (50m), back crawl (50m) and elementary back stroke (25m) and introduction to whip kick on the front. Swimmers learn about airway and breathing obstructions, reach assists and stride entry. Swimming endurance is increased to a 150m swim.

Introduction to breast stroke (15m) and feet-first surface dives. Swimmers learn about the dangers of open water, hypothermia, the performance of rescue breathing on children and adults, and standing shallow dives. Swimmers participate in timed treading water activities using the eggbeater skill for 3 minutes to improve their ability to remain at the surface in the event of an unexpected fall into water. Endurance is built on a 300m swim. Front crawl and back crawl distances are increased to 75m each.

Refinement of front crawl (100m), back crawl (100m), elementary back stroke (50m) and breast stroke (25m), and encourages swimmers to combine different kicks for fitness (3 mins). They also work on head-first surface dives and learn about wise choices, peer influences and self-rescue from ice. Endurance is built through a 400m swim.

This level is a final assessment of the strokes for technique and distance (front crawl 100m, back crawl 100m, elementary back stroke 50m, breast stroke 50m and sidestroke 25m). Swimmers learn about sun safety, rescue of others from ice, and head-first and feet-first surface dives. Endurance is built using the dolphin kick (vertical) and a 500m swim.

Children

DROWNINGS ARE PREVENTABLEDrowning is the second leading cause of preventable death for children under 10 years of age. Children under 5 are most at risk. Their natural curiosity combined with an almost magnetic attraction to water means that they have a high risk of drowning anytime they’re near water.

• Drownings involving toddlers can be prevented if parents or caregivers are within arm’s reach of their children when they are in or near water.

• Designate a backyard pool lifeguard. An adult should always supervise whenever children are using a pool – in-ground, above ground or wading pool. If you must be absent for a moment, designate another adult to replace you or close the pool until someone can assume supervisory duties.

• Stay tub-side until all the water is drained and you have removed your children from the tub. Most bathtub drownings occur because youngsters were left alone for “just a moment”.

• Drain bathtubs when they are not in use.• Empty unattended wading pools and buckets of water and

turn them over.• Put a lifejacket on children who can’t swim when they’re in

a boat or at the beach or pool.• Be vigilant. Many children who drown do so because parents

or caregivers lose sight of them for a very short period of time.

Did You Know?Sixty-three percent of Canadian kids’ free

time after school and on weekends is spent not being active. The Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology recently reported that

children spend 8 ½ hours a day being sedentary; the recommendation is not more than 2 hours a day sitting outside of school.

We need to get our kids moving.

THE KAMLOOPS BIKE RANCHThe Kamloops Bike Ranch is a 26 hectare area located in the terraced and gullied silt bluffs of pine trees, sage brush, and open grasslands between Valleyview and Juniper Ridge neighbourhoods. The initial site has an elevation change of 132 m over its 1.1 km length.

Kamloops has a worldwide reputation in the sport of mountain biking. For many years Kamloops’ hills and riders have been featured in the adrenaline and gravity rushing films such as “Pulp Traction” and “Cranked”.

Its unique climate and terrain and the variety of riding that can be found have already attracted riders from all over the globe.

Phase 1 features a fast-flowing, A-line style downhill trail boasting a multitude of tables and “berms” rated for the expert rider; a jump park for expert and intermediate riders; and a BMX track to Canadian Cycling Association standards.

Phase 2 is a diverse bike park features including a trials area, cross-country trails, biker cross track, and a kid’s park.www.kamloops.ca/bikeranch

How to Buythe Right Helmet for BikingThere are different types of helmets for different sports and activities. It is important when choosing a bicycle helmet to make sure that it is specifically designed for cycling (not hockey, skiing, football, etc.), providing the protection you need.

Check and make sure that the helmet has a certification label sych as Canadian Standards Association (CSA). A certification label indicates that the helmet has been tested to withstand various impacts giving you the best protection that is available.

• Helmets should have adequate vents to allow for airflow to the head.

• Avoid helmets with pointed shapes, thin straps, and complicated adjustments.

• When you place your helmet on your head, it should sit low. The brim of the helmet should be about two fingers width (1-2 cm) above the eyebrows.

• The helmet should not be tilted forwards or backwards.

• The chinstraps should go over both ears in the shape of a V. The chinstrap should be secure around the chin, with room for one finger to fit between the strap and the chin.

BIKE TO WORK WEEKMay 27 - June 2, 2013 - We invite all businesses and their employees to join us for the 6th annual Kamloops Bike to Work Week!

What is Bike to Work Week? It’s a week long event that encourages and supports commuter cycling with a main focus on FUN! During the week, participants are encouraged to leave the car at home and bike all the way to and from work, to or from work, or just part of the way - it’s all good and who knows?, it just might become a habit!

What is Bike to School Week? This year we’re also inviting schools and their students and staff to show their support of cycling as an alternative form of transportation! Why not register your school and encourage your students to take the challenge to bike to and from school this spring?

Why Bike? It’s fun, it’s healthy, it’s less expensive than driving the car ... and it helps out the environment. Biking is a great activity

that you can do by yourself, with a friend or partner, or with a group of people. Biking is for

all ages, all abilities, and is an activity that you can enjoy almost anywhere.

For more information about the 2013 Kamloops Bike To Work / Bike To School Week, and how you can register, contact 250-828-3605 or

[email protected].
