Six miles north of Petoskey on US31, the Conway Township Park on the western edge of meandering Crooked Lake has a small beach with a bubbling artesian well. On Merritt Street/US31 in Conway.

PADDLEBear River Whitewater Park is one of Lower Michigan’s few true whitewater experiences, with challenging drops and rapids to thrill experienced paddlers. Beginning at the Sheridan Street bridge in Petoskey and continuing three miles to the mouth of Little Traverse Bay, the Bear River drops 80 feet and boasts a 2.5 rapids classification—and a 3 or 4 when the water is high. PADDLE LITTLE TRAVERSE BAYLittle Traverse Bay is a 45-square-mile heaven for kayakers and stand-up paddle boarders, with plenty of protected shoreline begging to be explored. Paddle from downtown Harbor Springs all the way to the historic lighthouse at the end of Harbor Point peninsula.

TUNNEL OF TREESThis 16-mile-long designated Scenic Heritage Route, offi cially known as M119, begins in Harbor Springs, passes through tiny Good Hart and ends in Cross Village. The narrow blacktop lacks a centerline (caution: don’t drive this route if you are in a hurry!) and traces an ancient Native American trail along a spectacular bluff overlooking Lake Michigan. Bordered by a thick hardwood forest that parts occasionally to offer tantalizing glimpses of Lake Michigan, the Tunnel of Trees is beautiful four seasons a year—so bring your camera. In the spring, morels and trillium carpet the forest fl oor. Summer brings a thick green canopy that turns red and gold in autumn. In winter, views of the icy lake open up. GO TO THE BEACHSwim in the warm, inland waters of French Farm Lake or find big water at Mackinaw’s Municipal Bathing Beaches, right in town. Four miles west of Mackinaw City, Cecil Bay Park, on Lake Michigan, offers a secluded sandy beach where you can walk the shore to the peaceful mouth of the Carp River. Find it 5 miles southwest of town at the intersection of Cecil Bay Rd. and Wilderness Park Dr.. BIKEGet pedaling! The 32-mile North Western State Trail runs from Mackinaw City to Petoskey (along a former railway line)—a sweet route that passes through Conway, Oden, Ponshewaing, Brutus, and Carp Lake. The 24.5 miles between Mackinaw City and Alanson are dirt, sand and gravel (improvements are underway but for now, mountain bikes only!) while the 7.5 miles from Alanson to Petoskey are asphalt.

The North Central State Trail also begins in Mackinaw City, running 61 miles south to Gaylord, past the Sturgeon River and Burt Lake and through the towns of Wolverine and Indian River. HEADLANDS INTERNATIONAL DARK SKY PARKOne of only a handful of these premier stargazing parks in the world, the park is building a brand new bricks-and-mortar center this year (so pardon its stardust!). LIGHTHOUSESShepler’s Ferry, one of three ferry lines that services Mackinac Island, also offers cruise tours of the numerous lighthouses in the Straits area. HISTORY IS FUN!Cannon smoke, musket firing and gazing out at the Straits over palisade walls are hallmarks of every visit to Colonial Michilimackinac. From 1715 to the early 1780s, this fortified encampment served as the western Great Lakes fur trading epicenter. All of that comes alive at what is now an open-air, live-action museum and active archaeological site (more than a million artifacts have been unearthed here since excavation began in 1959).
