The LandHistory Fun Facts
A Bit of HistoryThe Anasazi People• There are several evidences that the Anasazi were in this
county back in the 1200’s.
• While much of this evidence is tools, a home named the Defiance House still is found in the area.
A Bit of HistoryThe Mormon Settlers• Jacob Hamblin and other
Mormons first arrived in 1858, where they raised cattle.
• Native Americans forced them to abandon their lands, killing their cattle and destroying their crops.
• Jacob Hamblin worked hard to establish peace between the Native Americans and the settlers. Settlers didn’t start to return seriously until 1870, and when they did they tried to make Kanab a beautiful and prosperous community.
The Land• In Kane County you can find towering sandstone cliffs,
deep canyons, plateaus, mountains, and lots of sand.
The Land• The lush “Glen Canyon”—named
by John Wesley Powell—once formed the eastern border; now the reservoir waters of Lake Powell cover the canyon.
• Most of the rivers and creeks drain into the Colorado River.
