The President’s Pen

As 2017 sets sail my term of Kansas Angus President comes to an end. Howev-er, your new officer team and Board of Directors for the Kansas Angus Associa-tion have their sights set on another great year and association growth. What a pleasure and an honor it has been to serve in my role and work with this amazing team. It is with my deepest sincerities that I thank you for the honor, opportunity and trust to serve as your 2016 president. This life changing experience has yielded me an extreme appreciation for Kansas Angus cattle and people. I was able to attend 21 of ours breeder’s sales this past year across a large seg-ment of the state. This opportunity has shed light on just how vastly diverse Kansas Angus breeders and commercial cattlemen are. From the feedlots to the Flinthills, our state shows as much promise as any in the US and more opportunity in the future than most. I feel confident that there are other breeders that share the same cattle business views as you, yet also share the same state flag. I've seen it with my own eyes and I invite you to do the same. If you can please drive to the opposite end of our state from where you live to watch a sale this spring. That way you’ll see how the other half lives and conducts business in a different environment. There is always a take home message from each sale if you’re listening that might be the piece your missing at your place. Furthermore, if you have not ever attended the National Angus Con-vention or just not been in awhile please go to one soon. Our American Angus Association is growing and changing so fast and your attendance will help shed light on the future of our breed as it relates to your own home operation. Genomic technology is advancing rapidly and CAB continues at record numbers annually just to name a couple that the convention touches on. Again, I am truly blessed and humbled by the chance to have served as your president.

Thank you and God Bless,

Stuart Rose 2016 Kansas Angus Association President

generation Angus producer or come from a family with a long history in the Angus

business; we all are fortunate to have been given the opportunity to raise Angus

cattle and be part of the “Angus family”. As you are making you plans for New Year

include your Kansas Angus family by taking the opportunity to join friends both old and new at

the KAA annual meeting , banquet and junior show on January 21-22 in Hutchinson ( see page

1 for schedule and information). Also in January many of our KAA members will travel to Denver

for the National Western Stock Show, good luck to those that are exhibiting, or selling at the

various sales hosted during NWSS. In February “sale season” kicks of in Kansas and ushers in

the first of so many production and sales as well as private treating offerings hosted by Kansas

Angus breeders, check out the calendar on page 20 and plan to take in a few sales in the New

Year you won’t be disappointed in the quality of seedstock our KAA members offer.

Wishing You a Year Filled with Joy, Peace, Love and Prosperity.

Angus industry News and information provided by the American Angus Association ® & Certified Angus Beef , LLC.

Angus Unveils Long-Range Plan American Angus Association leaders reveal their plans for growth, leader-ship and the industry’s first Genomic Education Center. Anticipation was evident Monday, Nov. 7, as Angus breeders from across the country crowded into an Indianapolis, Ind., meeting hall for the Ameri-can Angus Association 133rd Annual Convention of Delegates. The meet-ing was the capping event of the three-day Angus Convention, where about 2,000 Angus seedstock and commercial producers, academia and allied industry met for educational sessions and thought-leading keynote lectures — all largely based on leadership, innovation and business cul-ture. The annual meeting represents the culmination of the fiscal work of the world’s largest beef breed organization as well as the election of officers and new board directors. This year, members also gathered to hear Asso-ciation CEO Allen Moczygemba unveil the Association’s Long-Range Stra-tegic Plan (LRSP). “As an Association, we’ve been blessed with strong leadership that has had the resolve to plan for the future, to make the right decision at the right time,” Moczygemba told delegates and attendees. “Those landmark decisions ensured our breed was positioned for long-term growth. This new Long-Range Strategic Plan, led by the Board of Directors, represents that same commitment to innovative decision-making so evident in Angus history.” Angus board directors and staff pursued a long-range strategic planning process in 2016 to pioneer a new era of progress and to grow the already dominant position of the Angus breed and brand. “Our leaders spent months establishing the plan, gathering important input from all sectors of the beef cattle industry, from seedstock to cow-calf producers, from feeders to allied industry partners, from marketers to re-tailers and academia,” Moczygemba explained. “The result was the most comprehensive and far-reaching effort of its kind for the organization.” Extensive surveys, focus groups and market analyses resulted in a bevy of valuable insight that revealed challenges and opportunities for the Associ-ation and registered Angus genetics in a rapidly evolving business. Main themes included changing market dynamics; increased competition, tech-nological and informational needs; and growing international opportunities and beef demand. The thorough assessment led Association directors to identify five core areas of focus for the organization in the next three years: genetics, com-mercial programs, leadership, product and research. “The long-range plan will create new opportunities and a framework for our future,” explained Jim Sitz, Montana Angus breeder and outgoing Associa-tion president and chairman of the board. “It includes an expanded focus on commercial producers, and also strengthens our genetic evaluation capabilities. I’m proud to say that we have assembled a plan and a team that challenge a complacent status.” In his opening remarks as the organization’s newly elected president, Ken-tucky cattleman Charlie Boyd said the Association’s plans are aggressive and offer the possibility to define the breed’s future. “I think this is one of the best plans this organization has ever developed, and I’m proud of it,” Boyd said. “It will solidify Angus as the worldwide centerpiece for genetic evaluation and position our organization for further leadership within the industry.” Key points call for the establishment of the Genomic Education Center, a multi-use facility that will expand the Association’s Saint Joseph, Mo.,

headquarters as well as its capabilities to conduct research, disseminate information and provide education to the industry; greater service and information sharing with the commercial cattle sector to drive the value of registered Angus genetics; an expanded industry leadership position; cre-ation of recordkeeping platforms; global opportunities and brand aware-ness; and increased research emphasis on traits like fertility, feet and leg structure and other areas. “This plan demonstrates that the board and the membership are not taking anything for granted,” Boyd said. “We’re moving forward because it’s our obligation to our past and to doing what’s right for the future of Angus.” Moczygemba said the work now begins. “This isn’t a plan that will rest upon a shelf. In the weeks and months ahead, we will set these initiatives in motion in order to ensure success decades down the road,” he said. “It’s another right decision at the right time that will enable each of our 25,000 members to achieve our collective mission of enhancing the genetics of the Angus breed, broadening its influence and expanding the market for high-quality Angus beef worldwide. We’re poised for a new era.”

Angus Elects New Board Officers, Members The American Angus Association welcomes breed leaders to serve its 25,000 members. The American Angus Associa-tion® announced officers and directors elected to its Board of Directors during the 133rd Annu-al Convention of Delegates in Indianapolis, Ind. Those serving the Association for three-year terms are: Richard Dyar, Cross-ville, Ala.; Dave Hinman, Malta, Mont.; Alan Miller, Gridley, Ill.; Jonathan Perry, Fayetteville, Tenn.; and Barry Pollard, Waukomis, Okla.

Charlie Boyd, May's Lick, Ky., was elected as Association president and chairman of the Board. He succeeds Jim Sitz, Dillon, Mont. Charlie, wife Paula, and sons Blake and Logan operate Boyd Beef Cattle. Kevin Yon, Ridge Spring, S.C., was elected by delegates to serve as As-

sociation vice president and vice chairman of the Board. First-generation Angus breeders, Kevin and his wife, Lydia, established Yon Family Farms in 1996. They have three children: Sally, Drake and Corbin. John Pfeiffer Jr., Mulhall, Okla., will serve as the 2016-2017 treasurer. He and his wife, Gaye, manage a diversified farming operation, where Angus cattle have grazed for more than 100 years. They have two sons, John Christopher and Andy. A total of 312 delegates from 39 states and Washington, D.C., represented Association members during the Annual Convention of Delegates hosted Nov. 7 during the 2016 Angus Convention.

More than 2,000 Angus breeders and commercial cattlemen attended the

three-day event and enjoyed educational sessions, a packed trade show,

my comfort zone. It has made me embrace new experiences that I most likely

would not have done on my own. I am very grateful to all of you for giving me

this opportunity to learn and grow.

New Angus Event Headlines Denver Activities Angus to host its first-ever evening auction and social in the historic Stadium Arena during the NWSS

Denver’s historic Stadium Arena, the heart of the National Western Stock Show (NWSS), was built in 1909 to celebrate the growth and viability of the West’s ranching industry. Today, its brick walls, steel columns and distinctive green chairs still bear witness to dozens of cattle shows each year, and the old building remains a symbol of the forward-leaning optimism of ranchers. On Jan. 11, 2017, a new evening event will grace the Stadium Arena to not only celebrate the heritage of ranching, but also the unprecedented, century-plus expansion of Angus into the West. Sponsored by Merial, the event will feature a bull sale, a fundraising auction and live entertainment. It’s also open to any cattle producer interested in attending with additional support from Neogen GeneSeek Operations.“We’re excited to host this event in Denver, and we want all ranchers to know they’re welcome to attend,” says Allen

Moczygemba, American Angus Association CEO. “Our goal is to renew our commitment to the National Western Stock Show, and to reinvigorate the interest of commercial producers and others in Angus events in Denver.”The event kicks off at 5 p.m. with the National Western Angus Bull Sale, featuring more than 50 lots of top genetics from leading registered opera-tions from across the country. Producers interested in evaluating the bulls prior to the sale may attend the Angus Sale Bull Show beginning at 8 a.m., earlier that day. Cash prizes and awards this year will exceed $10,000, and the grand and reserve grand champion bulls will be awarded a $1,000 genetic package donated by Zoetis. The sale also includes the Angus Foundation Heifer Package, featuring Basin Lucy 6265, a female donated by the Stevenson family and Basin Angus Ranch of Joliet, Mont. In addition to vacation packages and other auction fundraising items, several confirmed pregnancies from leading Angus seedstock operations will headline the Foundation’s fundraising offering. Consignors include 44 Farms, Cameron, Texas; Dameron Angus, Lexington, Ill.; Express Ranches, Yukon, Okla.; Pollard Farms, Waukomis, Okla.; and Vintage Angus Ranch, Modesto, Calif. The evening wraps up with live entertainment provided by Texas country band Jake Hooker and the Outsiders. A dance floor as well as refreshments will be provided. “This will be a fun event for anyone who has interest in ranching or Angus cattle,” adds Moczygemba. “It represents a great opportunity to see and buy Angus cattle, to support the Angus Foundation, and to also see old friends and make new ones.” The week’s events in Denver: Angus activities begin with the Angus Bull Sale Show at 8 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 11, in the Stadium Arena. A panel of three judges will evaluate the bulls using a composite system to establish a sale order. Judges are: Kyle Gillooly, Wadley, Ga.; Andy Musgrave, Pittsfield, Ill.; and Jim Vietheer, Wilton, Calif. Attendees will be invited into the showring to inspect bulls after the grand and reserve grand champions have been selected. Immediately after, the ROV Angus Bull Show is scheduled to begin at 11:30 a.m. in the Stadium Arena. Judges Scott Foster and Andrew Foster, Niles, Mich., will evaluate the ROV entries. The Junior Angus Heifer Show begins at 8 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 12, in the Stadium Arena. Bill Wilson, Cloverdale, Ind., will judge the junior show. The next day, ROV Angus Females enter the ring, judged again by the Fosters. The NWSS Angus Pen and Carload Show takes place Saturday, Jan. 14. The show begins with the bull carloads at 8 a.m. in the Livestock Center Auction Arena, followed by the Angus heifer pens and Angus bull pens. Steve Harrison, Idaho Falls, Idaho; Doug Slattery, Chappell Hill, Texas; and TJ Curtin, Blue Mound, Ill., will serve on the three-judge panel evaluating the group competi-tions.Immediate show results will be available online and accessed through the Association’s smartphone application, Angus Mobile. A complete event schedule, showring videos, event photos and breaking news alerts are also available by downloading the app. While walking through the Yards, be sure to stop by the Angus Tent, where Association, Angus Genetics Inc. (AGI) and Certified Angus Beef LLC (CAB) staff members will be on hand to visit about the latest programs and news from the organization. Visit www.angus.org for further infor-mation about Angus events at the NWSS.

American Angus Auxiliary Celebrates 65 Years The organization gathered for annual events and a milestone year during the An-gus Convention in Indianapolis. This year, the American Angus Auxiliary celebrated 65 years of bringing together likeminded women, and fostering connections through a love and passion for the Angus business. The Auxiliary women pour their hearts into the breed’s future by connecting women, providing opportunities and guidance to Angus youth through scholarships, and educating consumers about the Certified Angus Beef® (CAB®) brand. Women from across the country and Angus breed gathered for the Auxiliary’s annual events, held in conjunction with the Angus Convention Nov. 4-7 in Indian-apolis, Ind. The organization hosted its Annual Meeting, Annual Auxiliary Break-fast, Miss American Angus competition, executive meeting, exclusive brunch and other social events. The Auxiliary’s Annual Meeting on Nov. 6 saw the election of the organization’s 2016-2017 officers and regional directors. Members of the newly elected officer team are: President Julie Murnin, Huntley, Mont.; President-elect Leslie Mindemann, Sullivan, Wis.; Secretary/Treasurer Cindy Ahearn, Wills Point, Texas; and Advisor Shally Rogen, Brandon, S.D. Auxiliary members welcomed Julie Murnin of Huntley, Mont. as their new presi-dent. She is a past regional director for the Auxiliary and vice president of the Montana Angus Auxiliary. She and her husband, Jared, who serves as general manager for ORIgen Genetic Services, are advisors for the Montana Junior Angus Association. “This year, I’m looking forward to working with the team we have,” Murnin said. “It’s a great bunch of ladies.” Elected to serve as secretary/treasurer was Cindy Ahearn of Wills Point, Texas. She is a member of the Texas Angus Association and Texas Angus Auxiliary, and previously served as Region 2 direc-tor for the American Angus Auxiliary. Ahearn and her husband, Mark, own and operate Turner Meadow Ranch in Wills Point. Leslie Mindemann, Sullivan, Wis., will serve as the organization’s president-elect. Mindemann previously served as secretary/treasurer and has been a junior advisor, Region 5 director, leader in both the Wisconsin Angus Association and the Wisconsin Auxiliary Association and chair for the 2002 National Junior Angus Show (NJAS) in Milwaukee. Retiring President Shally Rogen, Brandon, S.D., has been active in the American Angus Auxiliary for nearly 20 years. Rogen and her family raise registered-Angus cattle in southeastern South Dakota. She has served as an Auxiliary regional director for five years, and has been an advisor to the South Dakota Junior Angus Association for 17 years. The Auxiliary’s 2016-2017 Regional Directors are: Region 1, Cara Ayres, Oregon; Region 2, Vivian Wolf, Texas; Region 3, Karla Knapp, Iowa; Re-gion 4, Melanie Kiani, Mississippi; Region 5, Deanna Hofing, Indiana; and Region 6, Gina Hope, Virginia. Regional Directors are a source of information for interest-ed members throughout the country. Regions 1, 2 and 3 were voted on this year and will serve a three-year term. Annual traditions The Auxiliary hosted their Annual Auxiliary Breakfast Nov. 6 at the Marriott Indianapolis Downtown, preceding the Angus Convention’s Angus University. Jeff Gore, cowboy minister and musician, and his wife, Donna, provid-ed uplifting entertainment. Anne Lampe of Scott City, Kan., received the Distin-guished Woman Award in recognition of her dedication and service to the Auxilia-ry. Miss American Angus Jera Pipkin gave an emotional address to the audience as she recounted her year as ambassador to the breed. Angus Convention at-tendees enjoyed the Angus Gift Barn, perhaps the Auxiliary’s most favored fund-raiser. Angus-inspired clothing, jewelry, household items, framed prints and much more were available for purchase in the trade show. To shop online, vis-it www.angusgiftbarn.com.

2016 highlights—The Auxiliary celebrated the inaugural year for its mentorship

program, an effort developed to match veteran Auxiliary members with young

women or National Junior Angus Association (NJAA) members who have aged out

of their junior status. The program made more than 20 matches between young

women and their mentors in its first year. Another high point for the Auxiliary was

the Full Circle Online Auction, hosted through AngusLive.com. Nearly 60 bidders

participated in the auction, with several bidders participating from outside the An-

gus business, Rogen noted. The auction helped the organization raise more than

$11,000, and Rogen said the Auxiliary plans to host the event again next year.
