Dear Angus Friends, I would like to say Congratulations to all the KJAA members that participated in the NJAS in Tulsa! You showed the depth of our Junior Association with all the participation in the contests and shows. It was an awesome week with numerous wins and placings. The future of the Kansas Angus Association looks great with

your generations coming up as Angus breeders and leaders! Keep blazing that trail! On behalf of the Kansas Angus Association and the Board of Directors I would like to say a special thank-you to Robert “Bob” Bailey for all his time these past years as our Kansas Angus Associa-tion Treasurer. He has done an awesome job with our financials! We so appreciate all the detailed reports prepared and guidance pertaining to the Kansas Angus Association treasury. Thank-you Bob for your time and dedication to our Association. Looking at the fall, we have the Kansas State Fair Open Angus Show in September and the An-nual Convention in November which includes a convention tour in Kansas with stops at Mill Brae Ranch, May-Way Farms and Chair Rock Ranch. Several Kansas Angus breeders will have cattle on display at those stops. The fall also includes several production sales in the state on the calen-dar. The afternoon will feature 21 educational breakouts with emphasis on management, animal health, advertising and marketing, commercial cattle production, ag markets, social media training and low-stress cattle demonstrations. In response to attendee feedback, there will be a few repeated sessions so there is a better chance of attending all desired sessions. “We are incredi-bly proud of the slate of education and entertainment available at the 2015 National Angus Convention,” says Becky Weishaar, Creative Media direc-tor and lead contact for the event. “We encourage cattle producers to re-serve their place in advance of the early registration deadline of October 2 for only $75 per person. Hotel reservations are also made on the conven-tion website, and the hotel block features a variety of price points and amenities on a first-come, first-serve basis.” Registration increases to $125 per person from Oct. 3 to Oct. 16. After that date, advance registra-tion will be closed and participants may register onsite for $150 per per-son. Angus Foundation Silent Auction Raises $13,000 For 20 years, the fundraiser has enhanced Angus education, youth and research. Bids on more than 150 items raised $13,000 toward the Angus Founda-tion’s mission during the annual Silent Auction during the 2015 National Junior Angus Show July 13-18 in Tulsa, Okla. Proceeds from these items help fund support for Angus education, youth and research initiatives. “The silent auction offers a unique opportunity for collectors of Angus memorabilia and those who create Angus art,” says Milford Jenkins, An-gus Foundation president. “The variety attracts people of all ages and allows the Angus Foundation to raise unrestricted funds for the Angus breed’s ever-growing education, youth and research needs.” Dick and Diane Beck, Sharpsburg, Ga., purchased the top-selling item for $1,000, which was a hand-sewn quilt titled, “Peace,” donated by Ann Simpson in memory of her children, Jeff and Mandy, From its inception in 1995, the silent auction has grown as an annual fundraiser and generated unrestricted financial support for various activities sponsored by the Angus Foundation, including Angus youth scholarships, Raising the Bar Confer-ences, the Beef Leaders Institute (BLI) and a number of beef cattle related research projects. Kansas Juniors ‘LEAD THE WAY’ at NJAS 2015 Kansas Junior Leads By Example Esther McCabe named 2015 Outstanding Leader The Angus breed recognized one of its youth leaders at the National Junior Angus Show (NJAS) by presenting Esther McCabe, Elk City, Kan., with the 2015 Jim Baldridge Outstanding Leadership Award. McCabe is currently a senior at Kansas State University and finished out her career with the Nation-

al Junior Angus Association (NJAA) at this year’s show in Tulsa, Okla. She was recognized with the honor during the NJAS closing ceremonies Friday, July 17, and will receive a $2,500 scholarship made possible by Bill and Betty Werner of Werner Angus, Cordova, Ill., and their generous $50,000 gift to the Angus Foundation in 2013. “Being a part of the National Junior Angus Association, and the Angus breed as a whole, has helped me to grow up,” McCabe says. “With all the different events within the junior associa-tion, you learn about the different aspects of the breed and how to stand up and talk with people about it.” Each year, an outstanding National Junior Angus Association (NJAA) member is recognized for contribu-tions to Angus organizations, personal Angus accomplishments, and community involvement and achieve-ments. In 2014, the award was titled the Jim Baldridge Outstanding Leadership Award, in memory of a lifetime of service to the Angus breed. An active member of the Angus community, McCabe has shown leadership in many aspects. In 2013, she represented the breed as Miss American Angus. “My dad al-ways told me, no matter how busy you are, you always have time for the people around you,” McCabe says. McCabe has been actively involved in the NJAA her entire life. She followed in her older siblings’ footsteps, learning about the industry and competing in many contests such as public speaking, the All-American Certified Angus Beef ® Cook-Off, team sales and many others. She also had success in the showring, and 2015 will be a year to remember as she exhibited the grand champion owned female, PVF Missie 4149. Esther also continued to receive a $5000 scholarship from the Angus/Foundation/Talon Youth Educational Learning Program .

A Commitment to Herdsmanship Jackson Wingert and Jared Radcliffe se-lected as junior herdsman of the year. A huge amount of effort went into cattle at the National Junior Angus Show (NJAS), even before they ever entered the show-ring. Two members of the National Junior Angus Association (NJAA) know this well. Jackson Wingert, Ottawa, Kan., and Jared Radcliffe, Weston, Wis., were both recog-nized with the Junior Herdsman of the Year award at the 2015 NJAS, July 13-18 in Tulsa, Okla. They were selected for their commitment to the Angus breed and the NJAA. “The NJAA has been a great organization to be involved with,” Wingert says. “I’ve learned so much that I have been able to use and now share throughout my future.” The Junior Herdsman of the Year award recognizes NJAA members who show dedication to their ani-mals, a strong work ethic, the ability to work with consumers and other junior members, and the skills to prepare their cattle for show. Every junior exhibiting cattle at the NJAS is eligible to vote for the member they believe deserves the award. Throughout the week, they watch their peers and determine who best exemplifies the qualities of a herdsman. Radcliffe can be found standing by the showring whenever a fellow Wisconsin junior is showing, ready to lend a hand. A student at South Dakota State University, he is using his experience in the An-gus industry to further his education. “It means a lot to win this award,” Radcliffe says. “Especially knowing that it’s voted on by other junior members, and that they think I am an admirable herdsman.” Wingert is a student at Kansas State University and a true leader for those involved in the NJAA. Even when he is not having the best day, he will lend a hand to a fellow member and cheer them on. This year’s tied vote for the Junior Herdsman of the Year was out of the ordinary; however, Radcliffe and Wingert are both deserving of the honor thanks to their hard work and dedication to the Angus breed and the NJAA.

Scholarships Richard L. Spader Scholarships Two $5,000 scholarships were given in memory of Richard L. "Dick" Spader, former American Angus Association vice president at the 2015 National Junior Angus Show (NJAS) Awards Ceremony, July 17 in Tulsa, Okla. Pictured from left are Brett Spader, presenting; and Jackson Wingert, Otta-wa, Kan., recipient. Since 1998, the Angus Foundation has awarded more than $2.1 million in undergraduate and graduate scholarships to Angus youth. NJAS Showmanship, Best of the Best Top junior showmen from each state compete in the prestigious The showmanship contest is one of the most highly anticipated events of the year for members of the National Junior Angus Association (NJAA). It’s a once-in-a-lifetime chance to represent their state as a top showman — just ask Allison Manchester, Manhattan, Kan., who now holds the top title from the 2015 National Junior Angus Show (NJAS) in Tulsa, Okla. “Growing up I actually didn’t enjoy showmanship, be-cause it was always at the end of the show and I was tired, but my dad always made me do it. And I am very thankful that he did,” Manchester says. “It’s been one of the best experiences I’ve ever had.” 52 showmanship contestants displayed their skills during the 2015 NJAS held July 13-18. After multiple preliminary heats and an intense final round, the top five showmen were selected. The journey to earning one of the esteemed silver bowls, which are awarded to the top five showmen, begins in each contestant’s home state, where two juniors are selected as representatives. The top showman at the NJAS is honored with the Dean Hurlbut Award, named after the man who organized the first showmanship competition in Lexington, Ky. Three judges eval-uated the juniors on their skills while handling an animal, their ability to follow instruc-tions, and evidence of courtesy and sportsmanship in the showring. This year’s show-manship judges were: Danielle Foster, Mount Eaton, Ohio; Amanda Schnoor, Modes-to, Calif.; and John McCurry, Burrton, Kan. Following Manchester, rounding out the top five were: second place, Will Harsh, Radnor, Ohio; third place, Kory Kovert, Croth-ersville, Ind.; fourth place, Reid Shipman, Manhattan, Kan.; and fifth place, Karisa Pfeiffer, Orlando, Okla. As younger members of the NJAA look forward to their chance to compete in this prestigious event, they can take advice from one of this year’s judg-es: “It’s not how well you present yourself, it’s how well you present the animal,” Schnoor says. “ Do showmanship every time you’re in the ring, keep practicing and get as much ring experience and exposure as possible.” The remaining showmen in the top 15 were awarded a pair of Andis clippers. Those showmen include: Katlyn Tunstill, Fayetteville, Ark.; Madeline Taylor, Lavaca, Ark.; Morgan Penner, Lafayette, Colo.; John Reasor, Wildwood, Ga.; Madison Butler, Vincennes, Ind.; Reese Johnson, Slaughters, Ky.; Jacob Heimsoth, Cameron, Mo.; Michelle Keyes, Springfield, Neb.; Mary Oliver, Union City, Tenn.; and Jared Radcliffe, Weston, Wis.

KAA Members Awarded Top BIF Honors

McCurry Angus Ranch Named BIF Seedstock Producer of the Year The Beef Improvement Federation (BIF) presented McCurry Angus Ranch of Burr-ton, Kan., the BIF Seedstock Producer of the Year Award June 10 during the group’s annual convention in Biloxi, Miss. This national award is presented annually to a producer for their dedication to improving the beef industry at the seedstock level. McCurry Angus Ranch is owned by Andy and Mary McCurry and John and Melody McCurry. In 2004, John returned back to the operation after graduating from college and expansion began. Currently, John works as the manager. The goals of their Angus seedstock business model focus on providing predictable genetics that are economically important to commercial producers; improving effi-ciency and carcass quality; and providing a solid foundation for future generations. The genetic program at the ranch seeks to propagate high-accuracy sires and cow families that combine the best of calving ease and top performance with maternal efficiency and a high-quality consumer product.

The McCurrys began their south-central Kansas ranch in the late 1970s with, “no land, no facilities and no equipment” to go with a foundation of seven registered Angus females. Today the operation has expanded to 400 head of registered Angus cows and 250 spring-calving commercial cows. They maintain 150 commercial Angus cows near Buffalo, S.D., for their embryo transfer (ET) program. The family markets around 175 bulls a year through a spring sale and by private treaty. The home ranch now consists of 2,000 acres, and they send cattle to the Flint Hills to graze on satellite operations in Chase and Greenwood counties. The experience of building a business from the ground up provided the McCurrys knowledge and insight into the type of business structure required for profitability and sustainability.

Woodbury Farms Named BIF Commercial Producer of the Year The Beef Improvement Federation (BIF) presented Woodbury Farms of Quenemo, Kan., with the BIF Commercial Producer of the Year Award June 10 during the group’s annual convention in Biloxi, Miss. This national award is presented annually to a producer for their dedication to improving the beef industry at the commercial level. Woodbury Farms is owned by members of the Fred H. Woodbury family. Howard and John Woodbury manage the operation with their families. The ranch encompasses a 200-head commercial cow-calf herd, 200-head registered Angus seedstock operation, backgrounding yard and farming business. Although the operation is diverse in nature, the priority remains with the cow herd and its ability to produce high-quality beef in demand by consumers. Through wise utilization of natural resources and years of selective breeding, the Woodburys have developed an effi-cient, high-producing cow herd, which has allowed them to produce sound cattle from ranch to rail. The Woodbury’s market calves through various avenues. All calves are backgrounded after weaning on native Flint Hills pastures then finished in a commercial feedlot. The majority of the steers are sold through the local sale barn. About 30% of their heifer calves are retained for replacements with a majority of the remainders sold in a production sale in March, along with about 40 yearling bulls from their registered herd. The brothers collect performance data on their calves to continue to select for genetic improvements. This has helped them be successful competitors in the Flint Hills Beef Fest carcass contests, winning the steer carcass contest in 2012.

▪ More than 400 beef producers, academia and industry representatives were in attendance at the organization’s 47th annual convention. BIF’s mission

is to help improve the industry by promoting greater acceptance of beef cattle performance evaluation. For more information about this year’s symposium, including additional award winners and coverage of meeting and tours, visit www.BIFconference.com. New Scholarship Targets Youth who use Angus Genetics in their Seedstock & Commercial Herds Three aspiring Angus youth recognized with the all-new Allied Angus Breeders Scholarship.

The Angus Foundation announced last year their continued investment in Angus youth education by adding the Allied Angus Breeders Scholarship to the organiza-tion’s ever-growing scholarship portfolio. The Angus Foundation Board of Direc-tors approved funds to provide $1,000 scholarships to three youth who use Angus genetics in their seedstock or commercial operations. The first-ever Allied Angus Breeders Scholarship recipients are: Shelby Schiefelbein, Kimball, Minn., a Texas A&M University sophomore; Callie Kukuchka, Belle Fourche, S.D., a South Dako-ta State University freshman; and Nico Menjivar, Lompoc, Calif., a Conners State College sophomore. “The Angus Foundation is thrilled to award these three out-standing youth with scholarships for the coming school year,” says Milford Jen-kins, Angus Foundation president. “They are the future leaders of the breed and our beef cattle industry, and we hope these scholarships will help them reach their goals of acquiring a higher education.” Five judges comprised of two Angus Foun-dation directors, two Angus industry representatives and one beef cattle industry leader, evaluated the applications and selected the recipients based on academic achievements, agricultural involvement, and answer four essay questions on the beef cattle industry and the Angus breed. Full details of eligibility requirements can be found online at www.angusfoundation.org, and applications for 2016 will be available on the website Dec. 1.

First of all, I would like to congratulate all juniors on yet another amazing, and successful Junior Nationals! Every year these young men and women continue to impress the Angus Nation. And now, it is time for all juniors to return to the classroom! (And many parents to return back to

work as well.) In many ways, September feels like the busiest time of the year: the kids go back to school, work piles up after the summer's dog days, and Thanksgiving is suddenly upon us. During this time, I would like to extend my “best wishes” to those returning to the classroom. In many communities around the state, your summer successes and reputations will follow you. Continue to be proud of your accomplishments outside of the classroom! Not all adolescents have the opportunity to have their lives shaped by more than what just occurs in school. Much of my own character was shaped by traveling with my Angus family across the nation, summer after summer. These experiences, in combination with my schooling, made it possible for me to access local, state and national scholarships. Kansas Juniors are not only competitive in the showring, Kansas Juniors are in the forefront of Auxiliary Scholarship recipients. Therefore, congratulations to our local and national scholarship recipients! I am immensely proud of our juniors and their ability to excel in and out of the showring. A Taste for Quality Angus Foundation-funded research uncovers positive palatability ratings for branded beef. With high beef prices come high expectations for a quality eating experience. In today’s market, it’s increasingly important for consumers to relate the Angus breed and Certified Angus Beef® (CAB®) brand with a superior tasting product. A recent study at Kansas State University (K-State), funded by the Angus Foundation, aimed to better understand beef palatability and how branded programs may affect consumer ratings of beef products. Travis O’Quinn, K-State assistant professor and meat extension specialist, authored the re-search titled, “Determination of the effect of branding on consumer palatability ratings of strip loin steaks and ground beef.” The results point to positive trends for cattlemen who target high-quality Angus genetics in their herds. According to O’Quinn: “For both steaks and ground beef, products that were branded as either ‘Angus’ or ‘Certified Angus Beef’ were rated higher and more acceptable overall by consumers than similar, unbranded and generic branded products. “This research project was the first to demonstrate the palatability-related value of beef branding,” O’Quinn said. The research objec-tive was two-fold. First, determine the palatability differences of beef strip loin steaks and ground beef across the various quality levels, and second, evaluate how consumer palatability ratings are affected when products are identified with a brand (CAB®), USDA quality grade, lean point, or subprimal prior to evaluation. O’Quinn reports that CAB® steaks were rated 10% higher and Angus steaks 12% higher for consumer overall liking when the products were identified with a brand. No such increase was observed with USDA Choice or Select steaks. Additionally, the research showed CAB® 90% lean ground sirloin increased 22% for consumer overall liking when the product was identified with the brand prior to testing. Primal-specific and lean point branded prod-ucts received no increase due to branding. “These results give a clear indication that consumers associate the Angus breed with a high quality product and this value perception is carried all the way through the eating experience,” O’Quinn said. Further analysis shows that consumers associate the Angus breed with a high quality product and this quality perception results in a “brand lift” for the eating quality of Angus products, O’Quinn said. Re-sults from this study also indicate a value-creation opportunity through Angus branding in ground beef products. The American Angus Association’s research priorities committee approved funds for the K-State research through the Angus Foundation earlier this year, and the findings were released in June 2015. The full research report and project summary are available on the Angus Foundation’s website. “The Angus Foundation strives to encour-age and fund research projects where the benefits support the Angus breed and beef cattle industry,” says Milford Jenkins, Angus Foundation presi-dent. “Providing consumers the highest quality beef product possible is the goal of every Angus breeder, and this research project gives us more insight into consumer preferences.” For more information on the study or additional project investments through the Angus Foundation, go online to www.angusfoundation.org. __Angus Foundation
