WHAT IS THE KANSAS SAMPLER FESTIVAL?

KANSAS EXPLORER’S CLUB

The Kansas Sampler Festival ...

• provides the public a sample of what there is to see, do hear, taste, buy, and learn in Kansas.

• is a traveling festival that is held in a different Kansas community every two years.

• is a project of the Inman-based Kansas Sampler Foundation. The Foundation’s mission is to preserve and sustainrural culture.

• is a celebration of the Sunflower State that every Kansan should attend!

HISTORYOF THEFESTIVALIn 1990, Milferd Penner and hisdaughter, Marci Penner, hosted abook-signing party on the family

farm near Inman for theirbook, Kansas WeekendGuide. Communities fromaround the state filled onetent on a frigid Novemberday. The response was sooverwhelming that the

event was given a name, the KansasSampler Festival, and became anannual affair. In 1993, the Kansas SamplerFoundation was formed andbecame the overseer of the festival. This Kansas celebration was held onthe Penner Farm though 1997,when 8,000 people attended. The decision was made to makemore people aware of what Kansashas to offer by literally taking thefestival on the road.Pratt, Ottawa, Independence,Newton, Garden City, Concordiaand Leavenworth have each hostedthe event on a two-year rotationprior to Liberal’s selection as the2012 and 2013 host.

In 1994, a group of rural leaders got together to figure out how we could get more people to visit and appreciate the treasures inand around small towns and in the nooks and crannies of the bigger cities. The outcome of that brainstorm was the start of theKansas Explorers Club! Since then, over 5,000 people have signed up as members.People want to find places like the 1856 Surveyor’s Monument near Mahaska, a glebe near Wakefield, and 200 ancient giantDakota Sandstone concretions near Minneapolis. They want to eat chicken-fried steaks and old-fashioned mashed potatoes withpepper gravy at places like Trappers Bar and Grill in Simpson! Explorers crave knowledge about these little known places so sixtimes a year club members receive an 8-page newsletter chock full of suggestions and ideas on how to make it experiential.Explorers of Kansas dare to do dirt, feel good about spending money in locally-owned businesses, eat in cafes and restaurants, and simply enjoy the journey! Some members have been known to create Explorer quests to enhance their statewide explorations– bowling in every county, eating a hamburger in every county, or sticking their toe in every state lake.An individual membership to the Kansas Explorers Club is $18.61 (the year Kansas became a state). A family membership is$30. You can join online at explorekansas.org or visit the Kansas Explorers Club tent at the festival. The club is a project of theKansas Sampler Foundation.

WELCOMETO LIBERAL!Liberal is a southwest Kansas

community rich in diversity. The city has grown to more than

20,000 residents serving a retail tradezone of 80,000 and growing.Liberal’s retail pull factor continues to

be one of the strongest in Kansas, andthe community has a strong economicbase with a foundation in agricultureand an ever-expanding business climatethanks to the consistent traffic providedby Highways 54 and 83 that intersecthere. From some of the largest celebrations

that range from International PancakeDay to Cinco de Mayo, Liberal is a hubof activity and commerce for a regionthat spans across five states.

We hope you enjoy your visit to Liberal for the Kansas Sampler Festival. We invite you to to begin your magical journey into the Sunflower State right here in Liberal!

Newcomers to Liberal might be amazed to see people dashing down Kansas Avenue on a chilly winter morning, pancake skilletsclutched tightly to their apron-clad chests as they race. But that’s just Pancake Day, a holiday practically every child in Liberal is familiarwith before they reach age 5.Pancake Day dates back to 1445. It always falls on the day before Ash Wednesday, the day that opens the traditional Roman Catholic

Lent period. The holiday pancakes had their start as “shriving cakes” associated with using up the leftover butter and fats (that would beforbidden during Lent) so they wouldn’t go bad, and were eaten as a last hurrah before the strict rules of Lent. The traditional story holds that in Olney, England, one woman was busy preparing her

pancakes when the bell rang to go to church. She grabbed up her skillet, pancake andall and ran in her apron to church, becoming the first pancake racer.Over the years, Olney became England’s official Pancake Day celebration

headquarters. Liberal’s RJ Leete heard of the event, and asked Olney repre-sentatives if Liberal could join in the fun in a little friendly internationalcompetition. The Brits agreed, and the friendly race has been heldannually since 1950.Liberal schools (U.S.D. 480) are closed to observe the holiday and

participate in the celebrations on Pancake Day. Liberal has now been observing Pancake Day for more than half a

century. It takes a certain amount of ambition, or at least nerve, to run a

quarter-mile race with a skillet in hand, and a pancake in the skillet - butthat’s nearly the only requirement to participate in the Liberal leg of theInternational Pancake Race.Entrants must be female, 18 or older, and residents of Liberal. In addition,

they must have domestic duties, which does mean they should be an adultmember of their own household. They must race in skirts or dresses, aprons andhead scarves. The pancake must be flipped at the beginning and end of the course. In addition to the big international race, Pancake Day includes a host of races and other

activities for kids, men and seniors.

Liberal, Kansas — Pancake hub of the universe!

ENTERTAINER BIOS Cont.

That’s one of the first questions people ask about Liberal. That, and “Where’s Toto?”The story of Liberal’s name dates back to 1885.Back then, water was a rare commodity on the high plains,

and when travelers could find it, the fees were high.Mr. Seymour S. Rogers homesteaded right here, hand-dug a

water well 88 feet deep, and opened a general store. As travelers came by and purchased their supplies, they asked

for water. Rogers gave them the water for free.Their response was, “That’s mighty liberal of ya.”As the travelers headed on their way, they would tell others

about that “Liberal fella” who gave water away for free. The name stuck, and Liberal had its beginnings.A few years later, the Rock Island Railroad made the

community a point on the rail, and the name “Liberal”continued to bring recognition to the small town.

How did Liberal get its name?
