time of great joy when friends and families get together and celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ, and the celebrations continue until after the New Year.

The Christmas season is one of the most celebrated periods for Nigerians regardless of tribe or religion. Nigerians living in diaspora use Christmas as an avenue to visit their families and reconnect with old friends. The Christmas period is when you feel love, happiness, and excitement in the air. It is common to see many families from the urban areas travelling in mass to the villages and their hometowns or visiting the tailor to ensure that the custom design dress for Christmas will be ready. During this season, people also engage in charitable causes.

Christmas is not complete without food and cooking. Rice is the number one staple food in Nigeria and it is the number one dish served on Christmas Day. It is customary to serve “Christmas Rice” to your guests, it is usually prepared as “Jollof Rice”, with stewed or fried rice and served with fried beef, chicken or turkey depending on what you can afford, also snacks like “Chin Chin” and “Poundo yam”. Rice is important during this festive period, which has led some companies to give out bags of rice as gifts to their employees. It is also a time we share the cooked food to our neighbours.

Nigerians are known to be very fashionable and Christmas period is an opportunity to spend a great deal of money and time to wear a new outfit regardless of your social status. The children dress up in their new clothes and go house to house, where they receive gifts after wishing people “Merry Christmas”.

Christmas Carols is a must do during the Yuletide season. A com-mon practice is for Churches to host a Christmas Carol service, which is a colourful and packed event that aims to celebrate the birth of Christ through the sounds of praise and worship. In some cases, the Church Choir selects a few members of the congregation to visit at home.

On Christmas Eve, people attend the midnight church service and the celebration starts immediately. Nigerians usually start Christmas Day by going to Church to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ.

Nigériában karácsony napját december 25-én tartják, ebben az örömteli időszakban barátok és családok gyűlnek össze, hogy megün-nepeljék Jézus születését, s az ünneplés újév napjáig tart.

A karácsonyi időszak a nigériaiak legnagyobb ünnepe, törzstől és vallástól függetlenül. A diaszpórában élőknek pedig ez jó alkalom arra, hogy meglátogassák a családot, és újra találkozzanak régi bará-taikkal. Karácsonykor szeretet, boldogság és izgalom van a levegőben. Sok városban élő család ilyenkor tömegesen utazik haza vidékre és szülővárosukba, vagy felkeresik a szabójukat, hogy az egyedi tervezé-sű ruha elkészüljön karácsonyra. Ebben az időszakban az emberek jótékonysági akciókban is részt vesznek.

Természetesen a karácsony nem teljes ételek és főzés nélkül. A rizs az elsődleges élelem Nigériában, és ezt szolgálják fel leggyakrabban karácsonykor is. Szokás a vendégeket karácsonyi rizzsel kínálni, amit rendszerint úgy készítenek el, mint a jollof rizst: főtt vagy sült rizs, amit sült marha-, csirke-, vagy pulykahússal tálalnak attól függően, mit engedhetnek meg maguknak. Emellett kínálnak olyan ételeket is, mint a chin-chin és a poundo yam. A rizs nagyon fontos ebben az ünnepi időszakban, ezért több cég is rizscsomagot ad az alkalmazot-tainak ajándékba. Az ilyenkor elkészített ételt a szomszédainkkal is megosztjuk.

A nigériaiakról köztudott, hogy nagyon divatosak, így a karácsony alkalom arra, hogy sok pénzt költsenek, és új ruhába öltözzenek, tár-sadalmi helyzetüktől függetlenül. A gyerekek is felveszik új ruhájukat, és házról házra járnak, ahol ajándékot kapnak miután boldog kará-csonyt kívántak a ház népének.

Ilyenkor a karácsonyi énekek sem maradhatnak el. A templo-mokban gyakran tartanak karácsonyi énekes istentiszteletet, ami

színes és zsúfolt esemény, hogy a dicséret és imádság hangján megünnepeljék Jézus születését. Van ahol a templomi kórus

kiválaszt néhány családot a gyülekezetből, akiket megláto-gatnak.

Szenteste az emberek elmennek az éjféli misére, és ezzel el is kezdődik az ünnep. Nigériában a karácsony napját

általában azzal kezdik, hogy elmennek templomba, és megünneplik a kisded Jézus születését.

A tűzijáték is a karácsonyi ünneplés része, ami általában néhány héttel karácsony előtt kezdődik, és újévig tart.

Karácsony apó, a Mikulás nigériai megfelelője, akivel a gyerekek a bevásárlóközpontokban, templomokban vagy más helyeken talál-kozhatnak, és ajándékot kapnak tőle.

A karácsonyi lámpák és díszek is megszokottak a nigériai ottho-nokban. A templomok, vállalatok, főbb kormányhivatalok, nagyobb utcák és parkok sem maradhatnak ki ebből. A díszítgetés, ami már elég korán elkezdődik, karácsonyi hangulatot lop az emberek szívébe. Vannak családok, ahol becsomagolt ajándékokat tesznek a fa alá, amiket karácsony második napján bontanak ki. Karácsonyi képesla-pokat is küldenek egymásnak a barátok és családtagok.

Karácsonykor a nigériaiak segítő kezet nyújtanak a rászorulóknak, hiszen ez az ünnep a szeretetről szól. Sokan adnak pénzt vagy ruhákat az árvaházaknak vagy idősek otthonának, ahol szükség van a segít-ségre. Az egyházak is szerveznek ilyenkor ételosztást, amiből több ezer ember részesülhet vallástól függetlenül: özvegyek, mozgássérültek és hátrányos helyzetűek, akik ételt, ruhát vagy pénzt is kapnak. Jó alka-lom ez arra, hogy éljünk a kevésbé szerencsések segítésének jótétemé-nyével, amint az meg van írva a Bibliában.

Karácsonykor a közkedvelt helyek, mint például a vidámparkok, mozik, szállodák és üdülőhelyek nyitva tartanak. A nigériaiak ekkor a barátaikkal vagy a családjukkal együtt mennek kikapcsolódni. De-cember 26. a baráti és családi látogatások napja. Az Igbo törzs, akik főleg vállalkozók, hetekre bezárják üzleteiket, hogy elutazzanak a falujukba a karácsonyi ünnepekre. S ez egyúttal lehetőség arra, hogy eldicsekedjenek vagyonukkal a földieik előtt.

Mindenkinek izgalmas új évet kívánok 2019-re, békével, fejlődéssel, jóléttel, sok boldogsággal és jó egészséggel. Hozzon minket közelebb az új év álmaink és vágyaink beteljesüléséhez. Olyan Nigériára vágyom, ahol törődünk polgártársainkkal. Mivel közelednek a 2019-es általános vá-lasztások, azt kívánom, hogy stabilitás és béke legyen Nigériában. Szeret-ném, hogy minden nigériai gyermek tanult legyen: fiú és lány egyaránt, az ország mind a négy égtáján, vallásától függetlenül.

The use of firecrackers is synonymous with the celebration of Christmas and usually starts a few weeks to Christmas and last until the New Year.

“Father Christmas” is the Nigerian version of Santa Claus and the children usually visit the malls, churches or other places to meet and receive a gift from Father Christmas.

The use of Christmas lights and decorations is a common occur-rence during the Christmas season amongst Nigerian households. The Churches, corporate organizations, main government offices major streets and parks are also not left out. The decoration which begins early creates an atmosphere which puts people in a Christmas mood. A few households also wrap gifts and put under the tree which is opened on the day after Christmas known as Boxing Day. People also exchange Christmas theme cards with their friends and family.

The Christmas season is a time when Nigerians want to give a helping hand to those in need because of the spirit of love. Many Nigerians donate money and clothing’s to orphanages and old people’s home that require assistance. The churches also organize annual feast which caters to thousands of people regardless of religion like widows, the physically challenged and less privileged. They are provided with food items, clothing or money. This is an occasion to imbibe the principles of helping the less fortunate as written in the Bible.

During Christmas, places of interest like amusement parks, cine-mas, hotels and resort centres remain open to the public. Nigerians use the Yuletide season to relax in the company of their friends and family. The 26th of December is a day people use to visit friends and families. The Igbo tribe, who are mainly entrepreneurs, close their business for weeks just to travel to the village for the Christmas cel-ebration. It is like an opportunity to show off their wealth amongst their peers in their village.

I wish everyone an exciting New Year 2019 filled with peace, progress, prosperity, abundant happiness and good health. May the coming year bring us closer to our dreams and grant us our heart’s desires. I look forward to a Nigeria where we are mindful of our fellow citizens. As we approach the 2019 General Elections, I wish for stability and peace to reign in Nigeria. It is my desire that every Nigerian child, whether boy or girl will be educated, from East, West, North and South irrespective of their reli-gion.
