Kariba dam was built from 1955 to 1959, designed by the French Engineer Andre Coyne. The massive dam wall was built by the Italian company Impresit with the help of locals from Mozambique, Zambia and Zimbabwe. The wall stands at 128 m high, 617 m long and is 26m wide at the bottom and 13 on top. It is a double curvature arch dam with 6 flood gates that churn out between 2,000 to 3,000 cubic meters of water per second per gate when opened. The wall is a marvel to see and is a must see to anyone intending to visit Kariba.

Rich History and Heritage

The Tonga people having migrated from Central Africa settled on the banks of Zambezi, brave hunters who speared buffalo on foot and hunted hippo on canoes.

Speaking Chitonga and the guardians of the Nyami Nyami river god. Nyami Nyami corrupted from Nyama Nyama is the Tonga river god who used to appear when summoned by the people long ago. With a head like a snake and a body of a fish, would appear and villagers would cut meat from the Nyami Nyami, after that he would go back into the water and his wounds would heal. Locals would appease him by performing rituals. Learn about the Tonga customs and way of life when you visit Kariba.Operation Noah

From 1959 to 1962 the world stood in awe as Rupert Fothergill and his men created by history by embarking in the worlds biggest animal rescue dubbed Operation Noah after the biblical Noah. As the wall was finished receding waters caused animals to be stranded on mountain tops that were eventually drowned by the water. A total of 4,914 animals were rescued. Our Amenities

Well that is okay , what you need is that holiday deep in the bush of Kariba. Where else can you be able to mix and mingle with the animals in the natural habitat. African Bush Camps Kanga Camp

Kanga Bush Camp has six tents set in the heart of Mana Pools National Park. The main area of the camp is on decking overlooking the pan. A relaxing lounge area under the shade of large trees overlooks the splash pool and pan.

There is the choice of taking game drives in open-topped four-wheel drive vehicles or walking with professional guides. The opportunity to leave one's vehicle and track game on foot is an experience rare in the national parks of Africa and in Mana Pools in particular this provides the visitor with the chance to track game in safety with an experienced professional guide. Other activities include night drives as well as canoeing which is organised on request.

Game abounds on the flood plains and in the Mopane woodlands of Mana Pools. Kanga Pan particularly attracts great game in big concentrations as it is the only water found in the floodplain above the river. The predators, including lion, wild dog and leopard are often sighted and large concentrations of buffalo can be found in the Mopane woodland and open plains studded with Ilala Palms. Kudu, zebra, impala and waterbuck can be seen on the surrounding plains. Elephant take advantage of the plentiful "albida" trees in the area. Bird watching is also a great attraction of the area.

Kariba activities

Having cascaded over the Victoria Falls , and tumbled and swirled through the Batoka Gorge, the old Zambezi River then flowed gently across a flat valley floor to the Kariba Gorge. Enter the technologically minded man and dammed the river into Kariba Dam. The dam wall with a height of 128 metres and produces a lake of 5200 km2 in area at full capacity, then the water surface is at an altitude of 484m above the sea level. There are many islands (previously hill tops) in the lake. The Zambezi River water is rather clean but poor in nutrients , having filtered through Barotseland in Zambia. Kariba is one of the hottest towns in Zimbabwe with temperatures exceeding 40 degrees celcius. There are a lot of activities that you can take part in when you get there. These include canoeing, game drives, fishing trips, sailing, village tours, hunting, bird watching, cruises and charters, speed boating and even more.

Canoeing

Canoeing trips are available and no previous experience is necessary. You can canoe to from Kariba to as far as Mana Pools. All canoe trips and or safaris are led by a qualified canoe guides, who will assist in the setting up of camps and preparing meals. You can hire a speed boat or you can fish while you are on a boat charter. I promise that when you go fishing on the lake you will not go empty handed with over 30 species of freshwater fish you can never go wrong. It is not ideal though to fish during winter as the fish dont bite

Sailing

Lake Kariba is possibly the worlds best sailing venue offering a challenge to the fanatical racing sailor and safety to the easy going cruising family. Most people prefer the cool and sunny winter months of April to September, although many sailing enthusiasits opt for stronger weather. The lake is divided into 3 basins Kariba, Sengwa and Binga Basin. The most popular sailing cruisers are light weight, high performance vessels with generous sail areas. Karibas Main Events Kariba Invitation Tiger Tournament

Probably the most exciting event in Kariba, that is held for 3 day every year in October, when the tigers leave the deeper parts of Kariba and come to shallow waters to feed on the migrating kapenta. The tournament began in 1960 when a group of farmers thought of taking a break to come to Kariba and fish before the rainy season. The tournament has grown in leaps and bounds. It is now recognised by the Inland Game Fishing Association. Winners from the tournament can participate in the IGFA competition. The greatest number of teams to enter the competition was 333 teams in 1991. A team is made up of 4 members using 2 boats. The recorded heaviest fish caught was 15.507 kgs in 1960, in 2009 the heaviest fish was 12,35 kg. the tiger fish which is a descendant of the of the Goliath Fish found in the Congo system, provides an angler with a fight well worth its cause. It is probably Africas finest and most flamboyant game fish it is one of the worlds most powerful species.

The tournament is sponsored mainly by Zambezi Lager, Mainstay, Nashua and Nissan. It is held at National Anglers Union Complex at Charara .This is a tournament not to be missed, lots of activities and the after party is something else. Chinhoyi Caves Recreational ParkHistorically, the first white man believed to have discovered the Caves was Frederick Selous, the famous European hunter, during his wanderings in 1887.

It was believed that prior to that the Caves were being used as a stronghold by an outlaw called Nyamakwere who murdered many victims by throwing them into the "Silent Pool". The notorious Nyamakwere was eventually defeated and killed by a Headman called Chinhoyi who became a Mashona Chief, hence the name Chinhoyi given to the nearby town. Chief Chinhoyi and his followers used the Caves as a refuge from raiding tribes such as the Matebele. Until a few years ago the remains of Chief Chinhoyi's grain bins could be seen in some of the underground passages. The traditional name for the Caves is "Chirorodziva" which means the "Pool of the Fallen". The name was derived from an incident which took place in the 1830s when the Angoni Tribe, who were moving northwards surprised people living near the Caves and flung them into the pool. The area close to the caves was first declared a National Monument and in 1957 it was declared a National Park with its existing boundaries. It was then redesignated as a Recreational Park in 1975.The Caves consist of a system of tunnels and caverns. This system is a dying one (in geological time spans), in that they are slowly collapsing. These collapses can be noticed by the sink holes and depressions within the surrounding area. The Wonder Hole, which is the main feature of the Caves, is in fact a "swallow hole" or a large cavern with a collapsed roof. The walls or sides of the Wonder Hole drop vertically down for 150 feet to the Sleeping Pool. The pool is unbelievably blue and crystal clear which reflects great depth and non-flowing water.

Exploration by the Zimbabwe Sub-Aqua Spelaelogical Research Group has revealed that the depth of the water in the Sleeping Pool varies between 80 metres and 91 metres. This fluctuation in depths is attributable to the amount of rainfall received in a particular season. Several under water passages have been found leading from the Sleeping Pool, but all those so far explored lead back into the Pool. Near the end of the Dark Cave is a small cavern accessible only to diver known as the Blind Cave. A second one connects with the Sleeping Pool 58 metres below the surface and the third one is yet to be fully explored.

The Caves are composed mainly of the sunlit "Sleeping Pool" and the artificially lit Dark Cave. The Sleeping Pool 46 metres below the ground level is accessible in two ways:

1. Through the main entrance with an inclined passage, where the view of the water has been compared to the famous Blue Grotto of Capri

2. Through the Dark Cave, which leads down steps and along a narrow passage to a point just above the water at the far side of the Sleeping Pool.

The exit from the Dark Cave is demanding, as the steps are very steep. Therefore, less agile visitors would be well advised to avoid this latter option. It seems probable that further caves remain to be discovered. Research suggests that the water in the cave is connected to an even bigger body of water in view of the fact that the temperature in the Sleeping Pool never varies from 22 degrees Celsius. Excavations in and near the Caves have revealed that people have stayed around the area from early times. Pottery and human remains were unearthed from the area which radio-carbon dated around AD 650.

The Environs of the CavesAlthough Chinhoyi Caves Recreational Park covers a large area only 20 acres of it in the vicinity of the actual Caves are used by the public. The remainder of the Park is
