A delegation comprising the NC General Secretary Ali Muham- mad Sagar, Nasir Aslam Wani and Muhammad Akbar Lone called on the Governor at Raj Bhavan here and expressed dismay over the prevail- ing “threat perception” in north Kash- mir’s Sopore town. Talking to Greater Kashmir, Sagar said, they apprised the Governor of the “sense of insecurity” prevailing among the people of all ages in Sopore. “We urged the Governor to seek a reply from the Chief Minister as to who were behind the killing of innocent people. We also explained the fear and inse- curity prevailing in entire Sopore in the backdrop of killings,” Sagar said. He said NC believes if the Chief Min- ister won’t come clean on the killings, it would be deemed that “government was responsible for such incidents.” Sagar said the previous regime had worked hard after the 120 killings in 2010 to build peace in the region. “We now see the atmosphere getting viti- ated. The irony is that Chief Minister is acting as a mute spectator,” he said. He said people of entire Kashmir need to know whether Sopore killings are the fall out of Union Defence Minis- ter Manohar Parrikar’s statement “mil- itants should be killed by militants.” “Panic has already gripped Sopore and if the situation doesn’t improve, fear would grip entire Valley,” Sagar said. He said the spate of killings in Sopore has started casting a shadow on the tourism season, which has already suf- fered due to last year’s floods and then the flood scare created by the present dispensation in March-April. He said they also explained the Gov- ernor sense of dissatisfaction among the flood-victims in the wake of pea- nuts announced by the Centre. “We told Governor that how would the paltry package of Rs 1600 Crore help rebuild the infrastructure damaged in the last year’s deadly deluge. We requested the Governor to urge the Centre to release a package keeping in view the consider- ations of the flood-hit victims, including traders and farmers,” he said. The NC provincial president Nasir Aslam Wani said that the package announced by the Centre is a “cruel joke.” “The previous government had advocated Rs 44000 Crore keeping in view the concerns of all segments that got hit by the floods,” he said. He said the NC delegation also sought Governor’s intervention into the “big no” by the Union Power Minister Piyush Goyal on returning power projects to the State. “We fail to understand that on one hand, Govern- ment in its Agenda of Alliance claims that it would ensure return of power projects and on the other hand Centre is categorically refusing it,” he said. Wani said the NC leaders reminded the Governor that the working group constituted by the former Prime Min- ister Manmohan Singh, headed by C Rangarajan, had recommended return of Dulhasti and Salal to the State. “We demanded that the working group rec- ommendations be implemented,” he said. Wani said that they also raised the issue of “planned eviction” of Muslims from Jammu woods term- ing it unacceptable. On what would be the NC’s future strategy on the issues raised in their meeting with the Gov- ernor, he said that if there would be no outcome, the party’s core group will chalk out a strategy in consultation with the workers on ground. Kashmir Floods Rehabilitation package a cruel joke: Congress MUDASIR YAQOOB Srinagar, June 17: Terming the rehabilitation package for flood victims announced by union government a “cruel joke,” state Congress vice-president Ghulam Nabi Monga Wednesday said that peanuts are not enough for rebuilding residential houses which were destroyed during the deadly deluge. Addressing a news confer- ence here, he said that pre- vious NC-Congress regime had submitted Rs 44000 crore rehabilitation plan to the union government. The Government of India (GoI) Tuesday announced Rs 1667 crore for “short-term relief and reconstruction measures” in Jammu and Kashmir while asserting that it is “sympathetically considering” the state’s request on long-term mea- sures to improve the flood- hit infrastructure. “We were determined to pay Rs 10 lakhs to fully dam- aged category, Rs six lakhs to severely damaged and Rs three lakhs to partially dam- aged,” he said. He termed the rehabilita- tion package announced by GoI as a cruel joke with flood victims. “According to this package, flood victims fall- ing under category of fully damaged would be provided Rs 1.50 lakhs, severely dam- aged Rs one lakh and par- tially damaged Rs 25000/. How is it possible that a flood victim who was ren- dered homeless in floods can reconstruct the residential house with Rs 1.50 lakhs,” he added. He said the earthquake victims in Uri and other affected areas were provid- ed Rs six lakhs by the then UPA government as state government pleaded their case in right way. “What happened to CM Mufti’s assertions after taking over the reins of the State that Prime Minister Narendra Modi will show a bigger heart and pump in money in J&K like anything? Was he speaking about these peanuts,” he questioned. He described PDP-BJP coalition as an alliance of “Strange partners having opposite agendas except power which is their only common goal.” The MLA Sopore and senior Congress leader Haji Abdur Rashid who also spoke on the occasion urged Chief Minister to make a statement on Sopore killings. “People are scared. Nothing is clear. Among the blame game on killings, a common Kashmiri suffers. CM must make a statement on the issue. People have every right to know what is happening and who is behind all this,” he said. He added that PDP presi- dent has forgotten to visit bereaved families. “Mehboo- ba Mufti used to visit every household whose kith or kin used to fall prey to bullets from either side. However, she is not seen anywhere, at least, she didn’t visit any bereaved family in Sopore,” he said. In a statement Khan said: “The relief package comes nowhere close to the great loss suffered by Kashmiris especially the business community. Nearly 27, 0000 structures, 4 lakh hectares of agricultural land and 4 lakh hectares of horticultural land was damaged due to floods. Kashmiris badly needed international aid to rebuild their economy.” Geelani thanks people 'March towards Sopore on Friday' Srinagar, June 17: Thanking the people of Kashmir and Chenab Valley, especially Baderwah and Kishtiwar, for observing complete shutdown on Wednesday on the joint call of pro-freedom parties, the Hur- riyat Conference (G) chairman Syed Ali Geelani today appealed them to also make successful the proposed Sopore march on Friday to express solidarity with the families of innocent martyrs.
