Just a few of the artists who will be playing at this year's Garvin Gate Blues Festival, Friday and Sat-urday, October 9 and 10. This is the 20th anniversary of the festival and it will be a tribute to legend-ary bluesman Muddy Waters. Pictured above are, from left to right, Big Bill Morganfield, son of Mud-dy Waters, Steady Rollin’ Bob Margolin, Barrelhouse Chuck and Shirley Johnson. A special CD enti-tled “The Blues Had a Baby – Louisville's Tribute to Muddy Waters” will have a release party at Headliners Music Hall on Saturday, October 3. Produced by Garvin Gate's Mike Suttles and local musician Screamin' John Hawkins at La La Land Studios, the album features 12 local acts. We'll have more information on the Garvin Gate Blues Festival and the Muddy Waters tribute CD in the October issue of Blues News.

3 BLUES NEWS September 2015
Congratulations to the KBS Blues Challenge winners for 2015. Alonzo Pennington & Michael Gough of Russellville, KY won the solo/duo contest and Fistful of Bacon from Nashville, IN were the band competition winners on Sunday, August 2 at Stevie Ray's. Both will represent the KBS at the Interna-tional Blues Challenge (IBC) January 27-30 in Memphis, TN. Many thanks to our sponsors Four Ros-es Bourbon, Al Fresco's Place Recording Studios, Stevie Ray's and the Blues Foundation for their support. We could not have done this without the assistance of our judges this year – Tanita Gaines, Larry Grisham of The Beat Daddys, WCHQ's Lonnie Griesbaum and Don Ernst of Ernst Audio Ser-vices. Now is a perfect time to make plans for the 2016 IBC. You can find all the details including information on room reservations at the Blues Foundation's website at http://www.blues.org/.
The festival season continues to roll along with a new event sponsored by the River Basin Blues Soci-ety of Evansville, IN. The first annual Blues on the Rock Festival is Sunday, September 6 in Rockport, IN. Acts include The Beat Daddys, Lew Jetton & 61 South, 2 Miles Back, Laurie Jane and the 45s and Blind Dog Gatewood. There will be no less than five festivals during the second weekend of Septem-ber. Blues at the Crossroads is in Terre Haute, IN and headliners include Samantha Fish and Tweed Funk. The Kentucky State BBQ Festival in Danville, KY will have a few local bands plus regional acts Tullie Brae and Ray Fuller and the Bluesrockers. The Lake Cumberland Blues, BBQ & Arts Festival in
Somerset, KY will feature regional favorites like Stacy Mitchhart, Tee Dee Young and Kelly Richey. The music schedule hasn't been published yet for the African Heritage Festival at the Kentucky Center for African American Heritage in the West End but I did receive notice from Tee Dee Young that he will be playing at this event. After taking a year off last year, the Fort Knox Blues Festival returns on Saturday, September 12. Acts this time around are Toronzo Cannon, Edward David Anderson, Jarekus Singleton and Nick Schnebelen. The annual Jug Band Jubilee will be at the Brown Forman Amphitheater in Waterfront Park on Saturday, 19. The festival brings in jug bands from around the country and Canada. Their schedule is online at http://jugbandjubilee.com/.
Notable events this month include Mark & the Pentones of New Orleans, LA making stops at Paddy Wagon's in Richmond, KY (September 4) and Natasha's Bistro in Lexington, KY (September 5). Guitar virtuoso Tommy Emmanuel will be at the Lyric Theatre in Lexington on Monday, September 7. Americana and blues musician Paul Thorn will be at the Kentucky Center on Friday, September 11. The KBS will have a booth set up at the Smoketown Getdown on Friday, September 18. The event is a free block party at the cor-ner of Shelby and Lampton Streets and will feature music by the 10th Street Blues Band, the River City Drum Corp and The Afrophysi-cists. That same night the Kentucky Blues Society's 2014 band contest winner Fat Box will be at the Hideaway Saloon. And if that isn't enough entertainment for you in one night, Stevie Ray's will host their second annual Derby City Blues Guitar Showcase on September 18 too. Organized by Jason Lockwood of The Stella Vees, this year's gunslingers include James Gaetano, Jimmy Davis, Nick Harless and Randy Colvin. Nick Harless will be back at Stevie Ray's the next night with his band. They had the crowd dancing late into the night at this year's Germantown Schnitzelburg Blues Festival. The Robert Cray Band will be at the Victory Theatre in Evansville, IN on Sunday, September 20. Last year's KBS band contest winners The Beat Daddys will be back at Stevie Ray's on Friday, September 25. They have a new CD out called Hoodoo That We Doo. Chicago blues queen Shemekia Copeland will be at the Grand Theatre in Frankfort, KY on Tuesday, September 29.
The Kentuckiana Blues Society lost a valued member of our community with the passing of Don Edmondson on Friday, August 14. Don was a longtime KBS member and a dedicated blues fan. He was often one of the first people to show up for blues festivals or KBS events and would stay until late in the evening despite being in his 70's. He loved the blues and had a particular fondness for Little Walter. Back when I used to sing occasionally with the Jim Masterson Band, Don always wanted me to sing “My Babe.” It was my great pleasure to oblige him. I wish I could sing it for him just one more time. Rest in peace, Mr. Edmondson. You get to enjoy all the immortals now, including your beloved Little Walter.

KENTUCKY BOURBON FESTIVAL PRESS RELEASE
The Kentucky Bourbon Festival in Bardstown is excited to announce a new addition to the Music on the Lawn events at this year’s festival. Bourbon & Blues is the theme for the Sunday September 20 free concert on the Great Lawn at Spalding Hall. Two of cen-tral Kentucky’s veteran blues acts plus a Nashville based group of young musicians will close out the 24th annual festival. 10th Street Blues Band is a group of seasoned-musicians based in Louisville who have has been playing Blues from the 50's and 60's throughout Kentucky since 1996. The band currently includes Sonny Sitgraves (drums), Billy Bird (vocals, harmonica), Pen Bogert (lead guitar), Matt Swenson (guitar, vocals), and Wade Brown (bass). Paul Childers and the Black Tie Affair hails from Nash-ville. This group of young twenty-somethings met while students at Belmont University. They quickly have become a popular act that has toured around the U.S. Band members include Will McGee (Bass), Will Lynde (Piano), Kip Allen (Drums) and Paul Childers (Guitar/Vocals). Da Mudcats was originally formed in 1985 by Louisville blues legends Jim Rosen and Susan O’Neil. Sadly, Jim Rosen passed away in 1998 and most of the members went their separate ways. Fast forward to 2015 and the band has come full circle. The current lineup includes Gene Wickliffe (Percussion), Doug Lamb (Keyboards, guitar, vocals), Rob Pickett (Guitar, Vo-cals), Mike Lynch (Bass, vocals) and Susan O’Neil (Vocals). The performances start at 1:00 pm through 5:00. For directions and more information visit the Festival’s website at www.kentuckybourbonfest.com.

New Music Review
Blues...Off The Neck D Man Sunwarp
Too often, when instrumentation is heavy, or leaning hard towards the rock end, blues gets covered over. This is not the case with D Man’s latest recording “Blues…off the Neck”. While the bandleader, songwriter and guitarist is definitely all about the guitar, and he likes to rock, Don Oswald is also all about the blues. His self-produced CD of mostly originals, 10 songs in all, certainly slant towards a more heavy, rock kind of sound – and, a couple of tunes seem a bit too much so (For one, the title track – an instrumental – comes to mind). However, there are definitely far more good things than not about this recording.
Oswald presents his material with authority. His vocals, guitar playing, lyrics, arrangements – he pulls no punches. And it’s evident he’s got some chops on his instrument. And speaking of lyrics, not bad in that department, really. “…You don’t need none of that business. He ain’t worth the ride. In a silver plated Lincoln Town Car waitin’ for you out-side.” (From “Silver Plated Lincoln”). And: “When you turn and walk away, it’s a sight I can’t believe…I just hate to see you go, but, baby, it’s fun to watch you leave.” (from “I Hate to See You Go”). The songs range from hard-punchin’ fast-paced to slow ones (like the aforementioned “Hate to See You Go”) - yet re-gardless of pace, all are high-energy. There are no let-downs on this list. There are lots of guitar solos, instrumentation is well-executed, and production is clean. With any blues recording, the question would certainly arise about the use of slide. There’s very little on this album, but where it is present, it’s very good. One cover tune, Hound Dog Taylor’s “I Just Can’t Make It” showcases a fat, warm, greasy slide tone that makes the Chicago-blues song stay true to the style that made Taylor famous. All-in-all, a very good CD.

8 BLUES NEWS September 2015
Near the entrance to the Louisville Ceme-tery at 1339 Poplar Level Road, there is a Kentucky historical marker stating that 31 acres were incorporated in 1886 for a cemetery designated for African Ameri-can citizens. One of the names of several prominent persons buried there is blues guitarist, Sylvester Weaver. Because mu-sic was an important part of the black community, there are several gravesites of people who have made significant contri-butions to the blues and jug bands. In 2009, the National Jug Band Jubi-lee dedicated an impressive headstone for Earl McDonald. This musical legend es-tablished Louisville as the home of jug band music as an accomplished jug blow-er, singer, composer, band leader and recording artist. McDonald recorded 42 tunes during the 20s and 30s with the Dix-ie Jug Blowers and his Original Louisville Jug Band. There is another historical plaque at Waterfront Park honoring him, and Michael Jones has written an excel-lent history about McDonald in his recently published book, "Louisville Jug Music". John "Preacher" Stephens was a colorful bluesman that started playing the tuba and assorted other horns in Louisville clubs during the 50s. His association with John-ny Wicks (Wickliffe) and his Swinging Ozarks led to recording for United Rec-ords in Chicago in 1952. Stephens’ shout-ing vocals were also heard on the RPM, Fran and Bluegrass labels. Later in his career he became proficient with the spoons, playing with the Henry Miles Jug Band, and he was a part of the first Mid-night Ramble Series at the Kentucky Cen-ter for the Performing Arts in 1985. A sim-ple headstone was placed by his family upon his death in 1993. "The Famous Moanin' Mama" was how Okeh Records advertised Sara Martin to promote this classic blues singer following her big hit "Sugar Blues". During the 20s, she toured the country in vaudeville and the TOBA circuit as a national act. In 1923 she teamed up with Sylvester Weaver, singing "Longing for Daddy Blues" which was the first blues vocal ever recorded with only a guitar accompaniment. Martin also fronted her own jug band which included McDonald. A headstone was placed on her unmarked gravesite in 2014 through a joint fundraising campaign with the National Jug Band Jubilee and the Kentuckiana Blues Society. The ceremony was special, with onsite perfor-mances by the Jake Leg Stompers and Maria Muldaur. Following the dedication of Martin's headstone, the two organizations decided to use leftover funds to enhance the gravesite of Sylvester Weaver. In 1992, the KBS raised funds and placed a modest marker at Weaver's un-marked grave to honor the Louisvillian who was a pioneering guitarist. He recorded over 50 tunes for Okeh from

1923 to 1927. His fluid guitar picking and bottleneck technique were innovative and influenced other musicians like Lonnie Johnson and Earl Hooker. Weaver's guitar instrumentals "Guitar Blues" and "Guitar Rag" were the first solo recordings by a musician playing blues guitar and "Guitar Rag" was later covered by Bob Wills and His Texas Play-boys as "Steel Guitar Rag". Another Louisville native, Helen Humes, was discovered by Weaver when she was a teenager and she recorded her first songs in 1927 with Weaver and Walter Beasley accompanying her on gui-tar. Humes would later become an internationally known jazz vocalist. After 1927, Weaver retired from recording and playing professionally; he worked as a butler and chauffeur for the Lemon family, occasionally playing his gui-tar to entertain their children. Weaver's legacy received appropriate recognition with a rededication ceremony on July 25, 2015, which would have been his 119th birthday. Bays Brothers Monument and Engraving prepared a shiny black granite headstone with Weaver's image on the front and his biography on the back, similar to what they did for Martin's stone. The event was publicized in the KBS newsletter and Martha Elson wrote an article for the Neighborhood section of the Courier-Journal. During that hot afternoon, 45 people attended. These included Toya Flanagan and her two daugh-ters to honor her great, great uncle. She had no idea of Weaver’s significance to the blues, having known him only as "Uncle Brother". Following my introduction, Ruby Hyde represented the Smoketown Pride and Heritage Com-mittee, presenting a plaque to the family. Weaver had lived briefly in Smoketown on Finzer Street. Musician and historian Pen Bogert spoke about Weaver and gave some background about what the times were like when he lived. Weaver's niece and her children removed the drape covering the stone to a round of applause. Bluesman Mark "Big Poppa" Stampley concluded the ceremony by performing some of Weaver's music. Finally, there was a walking tour of the other gravesites mentioned above. The original stone had Weaver born in 1997, as was commonly known at the time, but subsequent research by Bogert of his WW1 draft registration and 1900 census records identified his birth in 1896 on the same date. This was corrected on the new stone. To celebrate Weaver's memory and birthday, a reception was held at Syl's Lounge on 2403 W. Broadway with ca-tered food and blues playing on the jukebox thanks to the generosity of the owner, Sylvia Arnett. Syl's is celebrat-ing 25 years under her ownership. What other musicians are buried in unmarked graves in the Louisville Cemetery who deserve recognition? Keith S. Clements Kentuckiana Blues Society
