Advisement
Every semester, students are assigned to department advisors according to last name. Consult the department of your major to determine your advisor before registering for classes.
All students are admitted to the University as an intended major. Therefore, you must formally apply and be accepted into a major through the academic program that offers the major. It is recommended that you complete this process no later than the spring semester of your sophomore year. Declaration requirements and procedures vary, so consult the academic program that offers the major for requirements and instructions. After meeting all requirements, the executive director/department chairperson or designee will sign a Change of Major form indicating the change in status to declare major. To complete this process, you must obtain a Change of Major form, which needs to be completed and signed by the executive director/ department chairperson or designee, as well as online on the CBPM website. The Change of Major form can be picked up and returned at the One-Stop (Administration Building, 1st floor).
CBPM Views on Academic Advisement
Academic advisement is the responsibility of all full-time faculty. The College of Business and Public Management views academic advisement as an essential
component of the student’s experience. Academic advisement is viewed as an extension of the classroom. The College of Business and Public Management strives for the highest-quality advisement in
keeping with the standards of the National Academic Advising Association.
[6]
Student Responsibilities for Advisement Meetings Students should meet with their faculty advisor prior to registration during faculty office hours. Students should bring their program evaluation to all advisement meetings. Students should become familiar with the Undergraduate Catalog as it contains important
academic policies and information about financial, scholarships, programs, and general information about the university.
o refer students to the Kean website: (http://www.kean.edu/admin/uploads/pdf/Undergraduate_Catalog.pdf)
Students should be familiar with the departmental GPA and curriculum requirements Students should be aware of academic deadlines, know when to register, drop or add classes, or
apply for change of major. Students should keep the faculty updated on their academic progress, changes to their course
selection, and their academic/career goals. Students should attend all classes, complete assignments on time, read College of Business and
Public Management (CBPM) e-mails regularly, and check the CBPM website frequently. Students should be aware of all course pre-requisites and co-requisites. These are found on
Keanwise by clicking on the course description or in the Catalog descriptions of courses on the Kean website.
Take responsibility for their education.
Tips for Faculty Advisors for the Advisement Session
Provide the level of service you would like to receive yourself (or for your own son or daughter). Be on time for your office hours! Realize that although you have been through this process many times, for the student, it is a new
experience. Remember that Kean students often have many responsibilities outside the classroom (as do you)
that may impinge on their time, you might ask about:-work commitments (how many hours do you work in a given week?)-transportation (how much time travelling, bus, train, car)-do you live on campus?-Have you joined any clubs? Suggest a few CBPM clubs or others. See our website.
Recognize honor status if the student has a GPA 3.45 or higher, congratulate them of their performance.
Pay attention to cumulative GPA below the department minimum to declare the major Pay special attention to any student with a cumulative average below 2.0 as they will be on probation
or dismissed. Suggest tutoring or seeing Jean Brown in the retention office for help. If medical or psychological issues, refer to Counseling or Health Services professionals.
Visit the CBPM website regularly for info on majors, minors, clubs, and internships. Share your expectations on careers, research opportunities, and professional organizations that
encourage student membership

Global Business SchoolKean University’s College of Business and Public Management is entering into a new and exciting phase of development with the creation of its Global Business School. Located in a new, state-of-the-art facility, this program will prepare students for careers in the new global economy and will emphasize a curriculum focused on: Innovation – Creativity – Entrepreneurship. Qualified students will have the chance to engage in a digitally infused global business practicum, leadership activities, networking and internships, plus interact with world-class faculty.
AccountingAccounting or accountancy is the study of how an organization records financial transactions and analyzes and communicates the results of such transactions. Utilizing standard accounting financial statements, accountants analyze operating results and discuss ways users can utilize this information. Accountants are employed in private business, non-profit, and governmental settings. The four year degree prepares students for entry level positions. Students preparing for the Uniform CPA exam are encouraged to complete the MS in Accounting degree. At present, a 3.0 GPA is required.
FinanceFinance examines the procurement and allocation of funds and involves significant decision making regarding best alternatives. Finance is the science of managing money. Finance majors may be employed in a variety of settings, life insurance, and portfolio management. At present, a 2.5 GPA is required.
Criminal JusticeCJ is an interdisciplinary field with students provided a background in criminal law, criminology, policing, corrections, and victimology with additional background in race and gender issues. The field is highly practical with experiential and service learning encouraged through the department. A minimum 2.5 GPA is also required.
Public AdministrationWhile political science teaches you how governments work, Public Administration teaches you how to work in government. Think of public administration as similar to business management applied to the public, non-profit or government sectors of the economy. Kean has one of the few undergraduate majors in PA and students are encouraged to complete the MPA program and may utilize the accelerated 5 year program here. PA has numerous applications in fields of law, hospital management, and governmental relations.
ManagementManagement focuses on the skills required to manage the operations of a business. Problem-solving, critical thinking, information technology, and communication skills are demanded in the successful manager. The Bachelor’s degree prepares students for entry level positions in areas of human resource management, systems analysis, information management, and international business. Increasingly this field will require study at the graduate level. A minimum 2.5 is required for entry into the program.
MarketingThink of advertising, product development, marketing research, and distribution methods for an effective marketer. Marketing majors look at the social, economic, and cultural interplay in making strategic decisions. Our program provides the core knowledge areas in marketing as well as an opportunity to specialize in a functional area. A minimum 2.5 is required for entry.
Minors available in Accounting, Finance, Management, Marketing, Public Administration, and Criminal Justice.

Internship Opportunities
The Cooperative Education/Internship program combines academic study with off-campus, career-related work experience. Students may earn academic credits while on approved employment experiences. Students are supervised by employers and advised by faculty members. While some companies do contact the College with internship opportunities, usually it is up to the student to find a position and then have it approved as appropriate for co-op. The job may be either full- or part-time, and credits earned vary with work experience. This opportunity is available to undergraduate juniors and/or seniors whose academic programs sponsor a co-op education course. At Kean University, titles of the co-op experience vary; they may be designated as internships, apprenticeships, or co-op education. Further information may be obtained by contacting the School’s Executive Director or the Department Coordinator.

Quick Tips
1. Must have program evaluation to complete registration advisement. Transfer students refer to this document as a transfer evaluation. Some advisors find the guidesheet easier to use as everything fits on one page.
2. Use Keanwise to search for course offerings.3. Students may add classes during the first week of the semester and need
permission from the Dean’s Office (see Assistant Dean Farrokh) for late additions.
4. Students may withdraw from a course (or the semester) without grade penalty prior to the withdrawal deadline indicated on the academic calendar.
5. Students may take up to 18 credits for the Fall or Spring semesters. See the Dean’s Office for credit overloads.
6. When in doubt, ask a senior faculty member or Farrokh for all student related issues.
