Port of ImminghamABP’s Port of Immingham forms Britain’s most significant tradinggateway with the rest of the world, including the European market of170 million people less than 24 hours away.

Humber Ports

ABP has invested well over £100m in thedevelopment of new facilities to support thepartial transformation of the Drax powerstation – the UK’s largest single producer ofelectricity – from coal fired generators to unitsburning sustainable biomass and fed via theABP Humber ports of Immingham, Hull andGoole.

The state-of-the-art Humber InternationalTerminal handles solid fuel destined for powergenerators and is able to accommodatevessels carrying cargoes up to 130,000tonnes. HIT also handles large volumes ofbiomass, animal feed, road salt and grain.

Together with itssister port of Grimsby,Immingham movesaround 54 milliontonnes of cargo ayear – 10% of all UKseaborne freight

Humber Ports

One of Britain’s busiest ro-roports, Immingham has eightberths handling more than 30sailings a week to and fromNorthern Europe andScandinavia. The Port alsohandles more than 25% of allUK rail freight.

With 30% of Britain’s oilrefining capacity focusedclose to the Port,Immingham is home to fourspecialist liquid-bulkterminals as well as the UK’slargest independently-ownedpetrochemical storagefacility.

Immingham is also a keypoint of entry to the UK formajor forest productscompanies, fromScandinavia and the BalticStates, and steel exports toworldwide destinations.

Port of HullAs well as strong connections with Scandinavian and Northern Europeanmarkets, the Port of Hull is the focus for an investment of more than £300million by ABP and Siemens. Green Port Hull involves the construction ofthe UK’s largest offshore wind turbine and rotor blade manufacturingfacility at Hull’s Alexandra Dock.

The Green Port Hull project, which will create1,000 jobs, is just the latest addition to Hull’sdiverse portfolio of assets.

Just 20 miles from the North Sea and wellserved by road, rail and inland waterwaylinks, the Port of Hull has a range of terminals,facilities and services, including HullContainer Terminal, which handles around250,000 teus (twenty foot equivalent unit) each year.

Renewable energy in the form of biomassrepresents another key trade in Hull, with anew 3,000m3 silo and state-of-the-art transferfacility capable of loading trains destined forthe Drax power station with 1,600 tonnes ofmaterial in just 40 minutes.

P&O Ferries carry more than one millionpassengers a year from Terminals 1 and 2 ontheir daily Hull-Rotterdam and Hull-Zeebruggefreight, car, and passenger crossings.

Hull has the UK’s first fully enclosed cargohandling facility for all-weather working onsensitive cargoes such as steel and baggedproducts. It is the UK’s leading softwoodtimber port, handling 609,000 tonnes in 2014. Dry bulks handled by the port includeagribulks, animal feed, cement andchemicals, and specialist paper handlingvessels and equipment can beaccommodated at the Finland Terminal – tomeet the needs of Hull’s paper and forestproducts clients.

The port is also the location for SaltendChemicals Park, a 300-acre cluster of world-class chemicals and renewable energybusinesses at the heart of the UK’s EnergyEstuary.

The Park is home to some of the mostinnovative and cutting edge operations ofglobal energy products specialist BP, whetherresearching new biofuels, or manufacturingacetic acid for a variety of products such aspaints, adhesives and solvents. The Vivergobioethanol plant is the UK’s biggestbioethanol producer. Opened in 2013 in ajoint venture with AB Sugar, BP and DuPont,it is expected to produce up to 420 millionlitres of bioethanol a year at full capacity – athird of the UK’s current demand.

Port of Goole

Located on the River Ouse, some 50miles from the North Sea and lessthan two miles from the M62motorway, Goole is only 30 minutes’drive from the industrial areas of Westand South Yorkshire. The vibrantNorth Midlands and North West ofEngland are no more than an hour’sdrive away.

The port also has rail connections tomany berths and well-used canalconnections to West and SouthYorkshire. The 310-acre Capitol Parkdistribution centre is located close by.

With a network of short sea shippingservices to Northern Europe,Scandinavia and the Baltic, Goole isprincipally a bulk cargo port, handlingagribulks, cement, animal feed,cereals and more, as well as steelproducts and bulk liquids.

The port has nearly 100,000m2 ofstorage capacity, including a coveredall-weather terminal and a store with aspecialised racking system for steelcoil.

As the UK’s most inland port, Goole is ideally situated foraccess to the country’s transport infrastructure.

Port of GrimsbyGrimsby retains strong links to the fishing and food industries and hasa major focus on handling vehicles.

Completion of the £26 million Grimsby RiverTerminal allowed the port to accommodatelarger, deeper draught vessels carrying up to 3,000 vehicles, securing Grimsby’sreputation as one of the UK’s leading carhandling ports.

Grimsby’s status as an operations andmaintenance (O&M) base for the burgeoningoffshore energy industry continues to build.The port has been confirmed by Dong Energy

as the permanent O&M base for theWestermost Rough Offshore Wind Farm forthe next 25 years. Availability of appropriatedevelopment sites has also attracted majorplayers in the industry such as Siemens,Centrica and RES.

A £5m investment in new lock gates hasallowed near 24/7 access to the Royal Dock,further enhancing the port’s appeal to therenewable energy sector.

Port of SouthamptonGateway to the World

This ideally located south coast gateway is the setting for a range of tradesparticularly cars, cruises and containers.

Southampton’s container terminal – the UK’s most efficient – has beenequipped with a new 500m long deepwater quay at a cost of more than£100 million, enabling the port to handle the world’s very largest containercarriers.

Car imports and exports through Southampton are set to rise beyond850,000 vehicles a year, assisted by completion of the port’s fifth multi-decknew car storage and inspection terminal.

Around 1.7 million cruise passengers per yearhave Southampton as their preferred choice ofport for cruise holidays, the port’s third corebusiness. The port, which has four cruiseterminals, is home to the UK fleets of both P&OCruises and Cunard Line and used regularly byRoyal Caribbean International, Fred OlsenCruise Line and Saga Holidays.

Southampton also handles a comprehensiverange of other significant trades, from the crudeoil that dominates the port’s liquid bulk trade tothe fresh produce stored at the Canary IslandsFruit Terminal and the dry bulks at the port’smulti-user terminal.

ABP’s five South Wales ports of Barry, Cardiff, Newport,Port Talbot, and Swansea form a unique logistics networkstretching the length of South Wales.

As well as steel, iron ore and coal, there is a broad range of other cargo handled atthe South Wales Ports.

From Swansea in the west to Newport in theeast, the five gateways are currently handlingmore than 12 million tonnes of cargo each year.

As well as steel, iron ore and coal, there is abroad range of other cargo handled includingpaper and pulp, chemicals, salt, agribulkproducts and bulk liquids – such as causticsoda, edible oils and refined petroleum products.

The ports of Barry, Cardiff, Newport, Port Talbot and Swansea not only meet the needs of the regional economy, but their location withexcellent road connections gives the SouthWales Ports a competitive platform from whichto serve the UK South West, West Midlands,and North West. Cardiff, Newport and Barry also generate significant volumes of rail freight.

ABP’s ports across South Wales are also making major strides in cutting carbonemissions and generating green electricity withinvestments in solar arrays at Barry, Cardiff,Newport and Swansea, and a 2.3MW windturbine in Newport.

Port of Cardiff

Located on the north side of the SevernEstuary, connected to the rail network, andwithin easy reach of the M4 motorway, the Port of Cardiff has expertise in the handling of containers, steel, forest products, and dryand liquid bulks.

ABP has invested significantly in the port overthe past few years, modernising infrastructureand supplying customers with specialiststorage solutions and handling equipment.

The port is also home to ABP’s CardiffContainer Line, which connects Wales toWarrenpoint to serve the Irish market. Thecontainer terminal at Cardiff – the onlyoperational container terminal in Wales – alsosupports Borchard Lines’ weekly service toEast and West Mediterranean countries.

Port Talbot

A harbour blessed with one of the deepestberths in the UK, Port Talbot is one of thefew capable of accommodating Capesizeships of up to 170,000 dwt.

Specialising in servicing the Welsh steelindustry, the port is located within easyreach of the open sea, has direct mainlinerail access and lies next to the M4motorway.

This nationally strategic port asset hassignificant development opportunitiesavailable for the construction of additionalberths and cargo-handling facilities.

Port of Swansea

The most westerly of the ABP South Walesports, the Port of Swansea handles a rangeof cargoes totalling some 600,000 tonnes ayear and provides a quality of service thathas earned it ISO accreditation.

The port has the capacity to handle vesselsof up to 30,000 dwt and provides berths andfacilities for most types of cargo. The port isless than three miles by dual carriageway toJunction 42 of the M4 and has direct links tothe national rail network.

Swansea is also home to the proposedSwansea Bay Tidal Lagoon project, whichwould be the world’s first man-made energy-generating lagoon powering over155,000 homes.

South Wales Ports

Port of Newport

Newport occupies a prime location toservice the UK’s main industrial andcommercial regions and is a steel, metalsand recycling hub.

ABP has invested significantly in Newportover the past few years, in schemes such asnew warehousing, open storage areas,cargo handling equipment, additional railsidings and a wind turbine generating theequivalent amount of electricity required topower more than 1,300 homes.

Port of Barry

The Port of Barry, nine miles west of Cardiff,is a key facility for the region’s chemicalindustry, handling liquid bulks for majorcompanies including Dow Corning. Barryalso has considerable expertise in thehandling of steel, scrap metal, containersand aggregates.

The port estate includes the new Barry SolarFarm, covering 37 acres and generating cleanenergy for the National Grid.

The Port of Barry has excellent multimodalconnections, with a link road to Junction 33of the M4 and direct rail connections to theBarry Intermodal Terminal, enablingcontainer transportation by train to UKdeepsea hub ports.

Port of Ipswich

The Port of Ipswich, at the head of the RiverOrwell, conveniently served by both road andrail, and within short sailing time of the busyNorth Sea shipping lanes, annually exportsaround one million tonnes of grain for localfarmers, as well as importing 140,000 tonnesof cement and over 300,000 tonnes ofaggregates a year in support of the localconstruction sector.

Ipswich has a broad portfolio of dry bulktraffics including animal feed, fertiliser andaggregates. Other traffic includes forestproducts, containers and general cargo.Regular services include three sailings amonth to the Caribbean and a monthlyservice to Famagusta, all carrying containers,vehicles and breakbulk traffic.

For leisure craft, the Five Gold Anchor award-winning Ipswich Haven Marina offers 333fully-serviced berths.

Port of King’s Lynn

Located on the Wash on the UK’s east coast, King’s Lynn includes among its range of facilities storage for grains, cerealsand agribulks, full terminal operations forforest products and purpose built transitsheds, warehouses and extensive openstorage.

The 97-acre port estate handles around750,000 tonnes each year.

Port of Lowestoft

Britain’s most easterly port, Lowestoft is arenewable energy hub for the fleet of supplyand standby vessels serving windfarminstallations of the Southern North Sea.

Lowestoft is the closest port to the East

Anglia Offshore Windfarm Zone, 10 milesoffshore and covering 600,000 hectares,where construction is expected to start in 2016.

The port is also home to the operations andmaintenance (O&M) facility for the GreaterGabbard Offshore Windfarm, a 504MWinstallation, opened in 2013.

In addition, Lowestoft offers extensivefacilities focused on supporting the offshoreoil and gas industries.

The port also supports a range of seabornetraffic such as forest products, general,project and specialised cargoes.

Small cruisers and sailing craft are catered for by ABP’s Five Gold Anchor LowestoftHaven Marina featuring 186 berths and full-service facilities.

Port of Plymouth

The Port of Plymouth offers a rapid route toFrance and Northern Spain for both freightand leisure.

A gateway for Brittany Ferries for more than40 years, today the line operates dailyservices from Plymouth to France and weeklycrossings to Northern Spain for bothpassengers and cargo, with the port’slocation providing convenient road and railaccess.

With its 200m long berth, an anchorageground capable of accommodating vesselsof up to 300m long and fully adjustabletender berthing facilities for ships moored inPlymouth Sound, the historic harbour isproving an increasingly popular port of callfor cruise ships.

The Port of Plymouth utilises a linkspan withcapacity to handle up to 200 tonnes andoffers some 5,420m2 of covered storage and34,000m2 of additional open space for goodsand vehicles.

Port of Teignmouth

With £5 million of ABP investment, the Port ofTeignmouth has seen deepening of berths,the creation of 3,000m2 of new transit shedaccommodation for larger and more frequentvessels and a significant enhancement ofship turn-around times.

Serving a thriving animal feed import tradeand equipped with GAFTA UKASTAapproved warehousing with separate

storage bays for organic cargoes,Teignmouth also handles a broad range ofother bulks including grain, stone chippings,salt and by-products from steel productionin South Wales. Ball clay, used in theproduction of most pottery, is also a keycargo.

Planned channel deepening works willincrease the capabilities of the port for largervessels, further enhancing the service thatTeignmouth can offer.

Port of Garston

The Port of Garston offers an ideal gateway tothe North West of England’s industrialheartlands. Located on the north bank of theRiver Mersey, seven miles from the centre ofLiverpool, the port plays a central role insupporting industry in the hinterlands ofMerseyside, Cheshire, Lancashire and theMidlands.

ABP has recently invested £2.5m inenhancing the storage facilities for ourcustomers at Garston, which offers dry bulkaccommodation for cargoes such as grain,ores and sand.

Port of Barrow

For more than a quarter of a century the Port of Barrow has offered world-class marine engineering skills to customers in the offshore oil, gas and renewable energyindustries.

Today, the port with a global reputation for

building submarines for the Royal Navy, hasbecome a significant feature of Britain’s “EnergyCoast” serving the growing energy industry inthe Irish Sea.

The Port of Barrow also handles more than300,000 tonnes of cargo a year, includingwoodpulp, limestone, sand, aggregates andgas condensate.

Port of Silloth

The Port of Silloth supports the farmingindustry of the countryside that straddlesthe border of England and Scotland.

Agribulks account for the port’s principaltrade with high-quality, specially selectedgrain imported for Carr’s Flour Mills.

Silloth is also the north west base for PrimeMolasses, a major UK supplier to the animalfeed industry.

Fertiliser is the single largest commodityhandled by the port but a range of othercargo is accommodated.

Port of Fleetwood

The traditional fishing port of Fleetwood onBritain’s north west coast is the ideal locationfrom which to serve the Irish Sea offshore windenergy industry.

The Port of Fleetwood offers 12.5 hectares ofhard standing, a sheltered haven, ro-ro berth with

Port of Ayr

The Port of Ayr covers 40 acres and is situatedon the River Ayr where it meets the Firth ofClyde, 34 miles south west of Glasgow andclose to Glasgow Prestwick Airport.

Ayr is the first commercial port encountered byvessels entering the Firth of Clyde. Backed byan experienced operating team, the port iscapable of handling a wide variety of cargoesand is also a port of call for visiting cruise ships.

Excellent road and rail connections from theport via the M77 for Glasgow, M8 forEdinburgh and M74 south provide a gatewayto the most highly populated andindustrialised parts of Scotland and northernEngland.

This ideal location and reputation for flexibleworking make the Port of Ayr a practicalchoice for shipping to the west coast ofScotland.

Port of Troon

The Port of Troon is one of the mostsheltered harbours on the west coast ofScotland and is an integral part of theregional supply chain.

Handling around 150,000 tonnes a year, thePort of Troon specialises in handling timberand is an historic fish port as well as being apopular destination for cruise passengerskeen to experience Burns’ country and someof Scotland’s world famous golf courses.

The port’s TimberLINK service utilises short-sea shipping to transport timber from theArgyll and Cowall peninsulas to sawmills andindustrial users in Ayrshire. This ground-breaking initiative by ABP, which transfersthe movement of timber from the road to thesea, handles around 100,000 tonnes eachyear. It is estimated this saves around one

million lorry miles annually, relieving congestionon local roads and cutting carbon emissions.

Troon is home to a purpose-built fast ferryterminal, a £5 million investment by ABP enablinglarger vessels to service the route betweenScotland and Ireland. P&O operates a dailysummer service to Larne in Northern Ireland.

The UK’s busiest independent inland railterminal, ABP Hams Hall handles more than100,000 sea freight containers – equivalent to200,000 teus – by rail annually, with fourworking sidings of 450m long each and tworeception lines of 750m capable of handlingthe longest trains on the network.

ABP has invested extensively in an ongoingexpansion programme at the 11-hectarefacility, which has seen operational capacitytreble in recent years.

The terminal, located just eight miles from thecentre of Birmingham on the Hams Hall

Industrial Park, is also a Channel Tunnel(SACTFF) approved secure facility forInternational movements. It has daily rail services to and from Southampton and Felixstowe as well as International services.

Road transport is equally well served by the UK national motorway network. The M1, M6, M42 and M69 encircle the HamsHall site which is next to the industrial parkoffering manufacturing, warehousing anddistribution facilities to household namessuch as BMW, Nestlé, Sainsbury’s, DHL and Bird’s Eye Walls.
