Connecting the Ice and Water Dispenser

Connect the ice and Water

System to Cold Water

Supply.

Refer to the instructions on the back ofthe cabinet.

,CAUTIONTo avoid cross threading andwater leaks, you must start all thewater tube fittings several turnsby hand before tightening withwrenches. DO NOT OVER-TIGHTEN. Also be sure to doublecheck for water leaks after turningon the water pressure to therefrigerator.

Placement and Leveling

Placement

On some counter tops there is a 1"overhang. If this is the case, the frontcorners of the counter top must betrimmed off at a 45° angle for the refrig-erator and freezer door clearance (seeFigure 12). To build-in your refrigerator aPerimeter Trim Kit is available at anadditional cost.

A recessed electrical outlet installed onthe back kitchen wall allows for a built-ininstallation of your refrigerator.

CAUTIONTo Avoid Property Damage to softvinyl flooring follow the floor prod-uct manufacturer's recommenda-tions when installing or movingthe refrigerator.

LevelingInstall the unit on a solid floor that isstrong enough to support the combinedweight of the unit, approximately 320 Ibs.;and the food, maximum of 625 Ibs. withan approximate combined weight of945 lbs.

The unit must be level to insure com-plete door closings and proper ice mak-ing. Improper leveling will cause waterspills and uneven ice cube size.

Units have front wheels that can beadjusted by turning a screw as shown inFigure 13.

If the floor is uneven from side to side, place thin metal plates under one of therear wheels.

To build in your refrigerator with otheroptions, such as wood or laminate con-sult with a local kitchen designer.

Operating the Ice and Water Dispenser

, CAUTIONTo Avoid the Possibility of Per-sonal Injury, Never Attempt toOperate the Ice Dispenser withthe Door Open.

Separate dispenser bars control therelease of ice cubes and water. They arelocated in a recessed alcove for safetyand convenience. The dispenser barsare sculptured to fit the contours of anordinary drinking glass. Depress theappropriate dispenser bar to activatethe dispensing mechanism.

Small spills will be caught in the sumparea below the dispenser. The sumpcover grille is easily removed forcleaning.

NOTE: There is no drain in the sumpso water should not purposely bepoured into it.

Do not add ice to ice bin.Do not try to speed ice dispensing byadding cubes of ice that you may havepurchased or made in some other wayThe unit has been "matched" to theautomatic ice maker and will not oper-ate properly with different shaped orsized cubes.

Water Dispenser

Water taste and odor. There are many variables which canaffect the taste and odor properties ofthe water that is being dispensed fromyour Ice and Water model such as:

1. Iron and other mineral deposits nor-mally found in water.

2. Type of tubing (copper, galvanized, plastic, etc.) used in the householdwater supply system, as well as thetype of tubing used to connect yourunit to your household water supply

3. Is the water "fresh" or has it beenleft standing unused in the storagereservoir and/or water supply line forany length of time?

To minimize taste and odor problems, itis recommended that the followingsteps be taken:1. Thoroughly rinse out the system after

it has been connected to the house-hold water supply This can beaccomplished by throwing away thefirst 10-14 eight-ounce glasses ofwater that are obtained from the unit.

2. If the water dispensing system is notused frequently, the entire water res-ervoir and system should be flushed. This will ensure a fresh supply ofwater at all times.

If the above suggestions do notentirely eliminate an undesirabletaste or odor condition in your water, your problem is most likely a waterproblem. It is recommended that youcontact your local water treatmentcompany for its specialized kind ofhelp in solving your problem.

To operate, press glass against thewater dispenser bar. Releasing pres-sure shuts the water off.

After the unit is connected to an activehousehold cold water line, it is advisableto fill and throw out the first 10-14glasses of water. This will cleanse thelines of impurities.

How The Water DispenserWorks

The water reservoir is located in therefrigerator behind the crisper pan. Thewater line to the dispenser bar is routedin a special way to prevent freeze-ups.The water dispensing lever energizesthe water line solenoid valve to addwater to the water reservoir.

The water is forced by household waterpressure through the tubing and out thewater dispenser.

Operating the Ice and Water Dispenser

WATERLINETO THEICE MAKER

HOW THE WATER DISPENSER WORKS

This water is cooled in the water reser-voir. Some water remains in the waterline to the dispenser, causing the firstglass of water to be somewhat warmerthan the following glasses.

Ice Dispenser

To operate apply pressure against thedispenser bar with a glass or other con-tainer. This activates the ice auger andice wheel which automatically deliversice to the glass.Release pressure on the dispenserbar before glass is full. Do not re-move the glass until the last of thecubes fall.

Normal Operation. Allow 4 to 12 hoursafter installation for the first ice harvest. The time required will depend on thefreezer temperature and the amount offood in the unit.

The ice storage bin takes about three orfour days to fill, depending on how often

you use it. At first, your family will beusing it quite frequently

To help meet this demand, you canspeed ice production by turning thefreezer control to a colder setting.

For best overall operation of theunit, be sure to return the freezercontrol to its previous position assoon as possible.

If you use very little ice over a period ofa week or so -- or if you use none at allfor that period -- the ice cubes mayfreeze into a solid mass and the unit willnot dispense ice. You must then removethe ice bin (follow instructions on nextpage), thaw the ice, and throw it away

Overload. If you hold the dispenser barin the ON position for approximately 4-5minutes, the dispenser motor may tripout on overload. This could occur if youwere trying to fill a large container withice. The overload will reset automaticallyin approximately 3 minutes, after whichice can again be dispensed.

IMPORTANT! UNDER NO CIRCUM-STANCE SHOULD YOU USE AN ICEPICK OR SIMILAR SHARP INSTRU-MENT TO BREAK THE ICE. To do thiscould cause damage to the ice bin and/or ice auger.

How the Ice Dispenser Works

Safety. All the ice making and dispens-ing mechanisms are enclosed withintheir own compartment for safety andfor maximum storage space in thefreezer section.

Whenever the freezer door isopened, the ice dispenser mechanism is inter-rupted. This prevents the dispensing ofice and also insures that you can ser-vice the ice bucket safely

Water is automatically measured intothe ice maker. When the water freezes,a sensor initiates the ejector blades thatdump the cubes into the U-shaped har-vester bin, where they are held in stor-age for delivery. When you push thedispenser bar, a large auger gently, butfirmly, moves cubes from the bin. SeeFigure 14A.

Servicing The Ice Dispenser

Certain conditions will require you toservice the ice maker and dispenser.

The unit has been designed so that youcan do such servicing with a minimumof effort.

Cold dry air has to circulate in thefreezer to maintain a safe freezing tem-perature. Thus, cubes stored in the binwill tend to evaporate and flow togetherif not used regularly.

You should remove the bin andempty the contents:

• After the first few harvests of ice havebeen made by a newly installed unit. This will allow any impurities in theline to be flushed out.

• Ifyou are going to be gone for longerthan a week. Raise the ice makershut-off arm to stop ice productionand prevent the cubes from freezinginto a mass around the ice auger.

• If the ice cubes become frozen toeach other and around the ice auger.

• If the ice cubes become frozentogether on the back ledge of the icebin. Periodic cleaning of the ice binmay alleviate this occurrence. Cleanwith warm water and dry beforereplacing bin. Do not use an ice pickto break apart ice.

Ice maker control arm. The wire con-trolarm on the automatic ice maker has2 functions:

1. Normal Operation: the wire arm isin the down position; ice will bemade. (See Fig. 14).

Power Miser Control

The 2-Position Power Miser Control letsyou save energy by adjusting refrigera-tor operation to humidity level in yourhouse. During hot, humid weather, anyrefrigerator/freezer will form moisturearound the doors, similar to the waycondensate forms on a glass of icewater. The cabinet has special heatersto minimize this condensation. ThePower Miser Control lets you turn theseheaters higher or lower.

The upper position is for periods ofhigh humidity.

The lower position is for maximumenergy savings. Use for periods of lowhumidity.

A minimum amount of condensation isnormal. During extreme high humidity, condensate may also form on the cabi-net sides and doors. This is normal andwill disappear when climatic conditionsreturn to normal.

Other Features

Automatic Frost Free

Operation

The freezer and refrigerator sections arecompletely frost-free. The evaporatorcoil in the back wall of the freezer sec-tion collects the frost. Under normaloperating conditions, you'll never haveto defrost the unit, because it'sautomatic.

Air Circulation

Air to cool the condenser is drawn in thegrille, at the bottom front, passes overthe condenser, and is then exhaustedthrough the same grille. Therefore, theunit is designed to be enclosed com-pletely at the top, back and sides for thetotal built-in look. Do not block airflowthrough the toe grille at bottom frontof unit.

Sounds

Your new unit may be replacing asmaller refrigerator of different designand/or a product which operated lessefficiently. We have taken steps in prod-uct design and operation which will con-tinue to provide our customers thehighest quality product, one which isenergy efficient and operates as eco-nomically as possible. With this newdesign, you may hear sounds which areunfamiliar to you, yet quite normal.

Polyurethane foam insulation, while amuch better insulator, does not have thesound-absorbing characteristic offiberglass insulation. Sounds may beamplified further by the wall and/or flooracting as a sounding board.

Because your product is designed toprovide greater efficiency, the com-pressor operates at a much higherspeed than previously. This results in ahigh speed hum which will be more

noticeable than the sound produced bya slower speed compressor. In addition, the compressor's increased torque maycause some vibration during start up orshut down of the unit.

The refrigerant flowing through therefrigeration tubing may create "waterrunning" or "gurgling" sounds duringoperation and shortly after shut down. You may also hear the ice falling out ofthe automatic Ice Maker or the activa-tion of the water solenoid valve duringan ice making cycle.

Periodically, your refrigerator will auto-matically defrost. When this happens, you may hear "dripping water" and"sizzling" sounds.

None of these sounds are unusual, andwill soon become familiar. They indicatethe unit is operating and performing asdesigned.

Do not wash plastic parts in an auto-matic dishwasher. They may warp. (Thebutter dish can be washed in a dish-washer if placed on the top rack.)

Ice Maker. If your water has a high min-eral content, the ice maker may require

periodic cleaning. Contact your localwater treatment dealer for cleaninginstructions. An in-line water filter mayalso be necessary.

Clean Defrost Drain Pan. The pan islocated underneath the unit behind thetoe grille. Pull the toe grille forward toremove. Every three months, removethe drain pan, wash it with warm soapywater, rinse and dry. When replacing thepan, make sure it is directly underneaththe defrost water tube that extends fromthe back of the unit.

Clean Condenser Coil. The condensercoil is located behind the toe grille. Usea long-handled bottle brush and a vac-uum cleaner to remove dust and lintfrom the coil. Dust and lint act as aninsulator and prevent the coil fromexpelling heat taken from inside theunit. Failure to keep the coil clean willreduce cooling performance andefficiency

You Can Help Save Energy!

Your New RefrigeratodFreezer isdesigned to operate efficiently You canhelp reduce energy consumption by fo!-lowing these suggestions:

Power Miser Control. This control reg-ulates special heaters that help reducecondensation during periods of highhumidity. Reduce energy consumptionby setting the control according to cur-rent climatic conditions.

Controls. Set the freezer and refrigera-tor controls so the compartments are

not colder than recommended. Seepage 11 for details.

Doors. Make sure the door gaskets donot become blocked, dirty or worn. Airleaks will cause the unit to operate moreoften.

Location. Installthe unit away fromheating equipment or direct sunlight.

Keep the Condenser Coil Clean. Adirty condenser coil will cause the unitto operate more than necessary SeeCare and Cleaning section.
