Before assembling vacuum cleaner, check the PACKING LIST (page 2). Use this list toverify that you have received and identified all the components of your new Kenmorevacuum cleaner.

Align wand and insert onto PowerMate® until the wand locks into place.

HOOD AND TOOL STORAGECOVERIt is normal for the canister hood and toolstorage cover to come off when openedfurther than needed.

To install: Line up the hose latch tab with the notch in the canister hood, and insert hose into canister until it snaps into place.

IMPORTANT:The vacuum cleaner will not operate until hose is fully connected.

To remove: Do not open hood before removing hose. With hood closed, press the hose latch tab in to release and remove hose.

TO REINSTALL TOOL STORAGE COVER:1. Press tool storage cover bracket down.

2. Align front edges of tool storage coveron canister hood.

3. Press rear of tool storage cover downuntil it snaps into place.

2. Plug the polarized power cord into a 120Volt outlet located near the floor.

CAUTIONMoving parts! To reduce the risk of personal injury,DO NOT touch the agitator when vacuum cleaner ison. Contacting the agitator while it is rotating can cut,bruise or cause other injuries. Always turn off andunplug from electrical outlet before servicing.Use caution when operating near children.

3. Lower the wand from upright position bypressing on the HANDLE RELEASE pedal.

4. Select a pile height setting by pressingthe HEIGHT ADJUSTMENT pedal on the rear of the PowerMate®. The pile height setting shows on the indicator.

SUGGESTED PILE HEIGHT SETTINGS

Attention: Refer to your carpet manufacturers cleaning recommendations.Some more delicate carpets may requirethat they be vacuumed with the PowerMate®

agitator turned off to prevent carpet damage.

For best deep down cleaning, use the XLOsetting. However, you may need to raise theheight to make some jobs easier, such asscatter rugs and some deep pile carpets,and to prevent the vacuum cleaner fromshutting off. Suggested settings are:

HI – Shag, deep pile, super-soft, or ultraplushcarpets, and scatter rugs.

MED – Medium to deep pile.

LO – Low to medium pile.

XLO –

NOTE: To protect bare floors, place the 3-way On/Off switch in the HARDFLOOR position to turn off agitator rotation.

The preferred setting for many carpets and also for bare floors.

5. Select a position on the handle 3-way On/Off switch.

Slide the switch forward to the CARPET position to turn on suction from the canister motor and the PowerMate agitator. The CARPET indicator button will turn green, and the PowerMate® agitator will start to spin.

Slide the switch forward to the HARDFLOOR position to turn on canistermotor suction only. The HARDFLOOR indicator button will turn green, and the PowerMate® agitator will not spin.

Slide the switch all the way back to turn the vacuum cleaner off. The CARPET and HARDFLOOR indicators will both become gray.

NOTE: The dirt sensor and wand light willoperate ONLY when the switch is in theCARPET position.

NOTE: Be sure the stair grip has engaged a step and that the canister is balanced securely on stairs before starting to vacuum.

SUGGESTED SWEEPING PATTERNFor best cleaning action, the PowerMate®

should be pushed straight away from youand pulled straight back. At the end ofeach pull stroke, the direction of thePowerMate® should be changed to point intothe next section to be cleaned. This patternshould be continued across the carpet withslow, gliding motions.

NOTE: Fast, jerkystrokes do notprovide completecleaning.

EDGE CLEANERActive brush edgecleaners are onboth sides of thePowerMate®. Guideeither side of thePowerMate® alongbase-boards ornext to furniture tohelp remove dirttrapped at carpet edges.

POWERMATE® STORAGEThe lower wand has a U-shaped storage hook at its base that slides into the U-shaped slot on the canister. The storage hook allows the wands and PowerMate® to be stored with the canister to conserve storage space. The canister must be stored on end for this feature to be used.

The PowerMate® must be in the flat position for storage attachment. Use the handle release pedal to place it in this position. The wand will slip out of the slot as it is lifted up for use and will slide into the slot as it is lowered for storage.

• Slide suction control forward to increase suction for upholstery and carpets.

• Slide suction control back to decrease suction for lightweight rugs or drapes.

• Keep the airflow passage open. Check each assembly area in REMOVING CLOGS (page 18) occasionally for clogs.

WARNING: Turn off and unplug vacuum cleaner from outlet before checking for clogs.

3. Put attachments on wand as needed. All except crevice tool will click into place. See ATTACHMENT USE TABLE (page 15).

FAN TOOL

The fan tool willattach to the handleor wand for over-head cleaning offurniture such ascabinets and shelves.

1. Rotate the fan tooland lock into place.

2. Attach the fantool to the handle orwand.

To replace, insert the floorbrush into the PowerMate®

until floor brush locks into place.

The floor brush is connected to the PowerMate® for quick transitions from carpet to bare floor cleaning.

The wand length isadjustable andrequires no assembly.To adjust, simplypush on the wandlength adjust buttonand slide the upperwand to the desiredheight.

WAND LIGHTThis vacuum cleaner is equipped with alight on the extension wand. The light canbe used for lighting hard to reachlocations. The wand light will operateonly when the vacuumcleaner is in CARPETsetting. The light willoperate when attachedor not attached to thePowerMate®.

Remove the crevicetool by pulling fromflat end.

To attach the crevice tool to the handle:

Insert the base of the crevice tool directly into the handle or bottom of wand for vacuuming in narrow spaces.

1. Place theround end ofthe crevice toolonto the tab onthe handle asshown.

2. Align the slot on theflat end of crevice toolwith the tab on thehandle.

3. Press the crevice toolonto the handle until the crevice tool snaps into place.

DIRT SENSORThe dirt sensor is located on the floor brush. When the vacuum cleaner is in use, with theswitch in the CARPET position, the blue light on the top of the brush will illuminate to showthat dirt is being vacuumed. As long as the light is on, dirt is passing across the sensor to indicate that the surface still needs cleaning.

When the sensor light turns off, the sensor isnot seeing enough dirt to warrant furthercleaning of that area.

TO CLEAN DIRT SENSOR LENSES

The dirt sensor lenses are located on theinside of the floor brush. These lenses shouldbe cleaned periodically.

1. Remove floor brush from nozzle.2. Turn floor brush upside down. 3. The two dirt sensor lenses are located onthe inside of the opening as shown. Brusheach sensor lens several times to remove dustand dirt.

PERFORMANCE/SAFETY FEATURES

WARNINGPersonal Injury HazardAlways turn off and unplug the vacuumcleaner before cleaning the agitator areaas agitator may suddenly restart. Failureto do so can result in personal injury.

OVERLOAD PROTECTORThe PowerMate® has built-in protectionagainst motor and belt damage should theagitator jam. If the agitator slows down orstops, the overload protector shuts off thePowerMate®. The canister motor will continueto run.

To correct problem: Turn off and unplugvacuum cleaner, remove obstruction, thenpress OVERLOAD PROTECTOR RESETbutton.

If the PowerMate® motor still does not run after reset, have the unit serviced by a Sears or other qualified service dealer.

THERMAL PROTECTORThis vacuum cleaner has a thermalprotector which automatically trips toprotect the vacuum cleaner fromoverheating. If a clog prevents the normalflow of air to the motor, the thermalprotector turns the motor offautomatically. This allows the motor tocool in order to prevent possible damageto the vacuum cleaner.

To correct problem: Turn off and unplugvacuum cleaner to allow the vacuumcleaner to cool and the thermal protectorto reset. Check for and remove clogs, ifnecessary. Also check and replace anyclogged filters. Wait approximately fifty(50) minutes and plug the vacuum cleanerin and turn back on to see if the motorprotector has reset.

If the canister motor does not resume operation after the reset procedure described above, have the unit serviced by a Sears or other qualified service dealer.

CHECK BAG INDICATOR

When the vacuum cleaner is running withnormal airflow, the light on the CHECKBAG indicator is off. The light comes onwhenever the airflow becomes blocked.If that occurs, check the disposable dustbag, motor safety filter and otherpossible clog locations shown inREMOVING CLOGS (page 18).

NOTE: The light may come on when usingcertain attachments, due to reduced airflowthrough attachment.

REMOVING CLOGS

The vacuum cleaner creates suction thatpicks up dirt. Rapidly moving air carriesthe dirt to the dust bag through the airflowpassages. The dust bag lets the air passthrough, while it traps the dirt.

For best cleaning results, keep the airflow passage open. Check the starred ( ) areas occasionally for clogs. Turn off and unplug vacuum cleaner from outlet before checking.

TO CHECK FOR CLOGS:

· Check dust bag and change if full. SeeDUST BAG CHANGING (page 19).

· Check motor safety filter and exhaustfilter and replace if dirty. See MOTORSAFETY FILTER CHANGING (page 20)and EXHAUST FILTER CHANGING(page 21).

· Check PowerMate® for any dirt or debrisin the belt path area or in the agitatorarea. Carefully remove any string ordebris located on the agitator or endcaps. See TO CLEAN AGITATOR (page23).

If the vacuum cleaner still has poorsuction, do the following:

1. Connect the hose to the canister andturn vacuum cleaner on. Check the endof the hose for suction. If there is goodsuction on the hose handle, there is noclog in the hose. If the suction is bad,remove any dirt or debris in the hoseand handle.

2. Connect hose handle to wand. Checkthe end of the wand for suction. Ifthere is good suction at the end of thewand, there is no clog in the wand. Ifthe suction is bad, remove any dirt ordebris in the wand.

3. Check PowerMate® swivel. Remove anydirt or debris.

2. To clean exterior, or to reduce staticelectricity and dust build-up, wipe outersurface with a clean, soft cloth that hasbeen dipped in a solution of mild liquiddetergent and water, then wrung dry. Wipedry after cleaning.

Do not use attachments if they are wet.Attachments used in dirty areas, such asunder a refrigerator, should not be used onother surfaces until they are washed. Theycould leave marks.

DO NOT bend or crease the middle of thecardboard when installing the bag into thebag mount slots.

6. Rotate bag mount down and install baginto slots per illustration, pushing down untilthe cardboard tab locks into position andthe holes align.

7. Tuck the bag securely into the bag cavityso that none of the bag is able to bepinched by the hood.

8. Close and latch canister hood.

9. Insert hose into canister until it snaps inplace.

10. Plug cord into wall outlet.

For best cleaning results, the dust bagshould be changed often. The CHECK BAGindicator will come on when the bag needsto be changed or the airflow is blocked.

2. Lift the rubber retainer and pull out motorsafety filter as shown.

3. Replace the filter, white side out, facingthe dust bag, by sliding it back into placeunder the ribs in the bag cavity. Tuck filterin so that it fits completely under the rubberretainer.

5. To replace the exhaust filter cover, insert the two tabs on the cover into the slots at the top of the filter chamber.

6. While holding latch down rotate filtercover into place.

MANGUERAInstalación: Alinee la lengüeta de seguro de la manguera con la muesca de la tapa del contenedor e inserte la manguera en él hasta que calce en su lugar.

IMPORTANTE:Empuje la manguera firmemente hacia el contenedor hasta que la lengüeta de seguro de la manguera calce en su lugar.

Para retirar: No abra la cubierta antes dedesprender la manguera. Con la tapa cerrada, presione le lengüeta de seguro de la manguera hacia adentro para soltarla y extraer la manguera.

PARA REINSTALAR LA CUBIERTA DEALMACENAMIENTO DE ACCESORIOS:

1. Presione hacia abajo el soporte de lacubierta de almacenamiento de accesorios.

2. Alinee los bordes delanteros de lacubierta de almacenamiento de accesorioscon la tapa de la aspiradora.

3. Presione la parte trasera de la cubiertade almacenamiento de accesorios haciaabajo hasta que encaje en su lugar.

5. Select a position on the handle 3-way On/Off switch.

Slide the switch forward to the CARPET position to turn on suction from the canister motor and the PowerMate agitator. The CARPET indicator button will turn green, and the PowerMate® agitator will start to spin.

Slide the switch forward to the HARDFLOOR position to turn on canistermotor suction only. The HARDFLOOR indicator button will turn green, and the PowerMate® agitator will not spin.

Slide the switch all the way back to turn the vacuum cleaner off. The CARPET and HARDFLOOR indicators will both become gray.

PROTECTOR TÉRMICO

Esta aspiradora tiene un protectortérmico que se ajusta automáticamentepara proteger a la aspiradora delsobrecalentamiento. Si una obstrucciónimpide el flujo normal de aire al motor, elprotector térmico apaga el motorautomáticamente para permitir que elmotor se enfríe a fin de evitar posiblesdaños a la aspiradora.

Para corregir el problema: Apagué ydesconecté la aspiradora para permitir quela aspiradora se enfríe y que el protectortérmico se reajuste. Busque y saque lasobstrucciones, si es necesario. Examinetambién y reemplace/limpie cualquierfiltro obstruido. Espere aproximadamentecincuenta (50) minutos y enchufe laaspiradora y prenderla para ver si elprotector del motor se ha reajustado. Elprotector del motor no se reajustará si nose ha apagado la aspiradora aun cuandola aspiradora se haya enfriado.

When the vacuum cleaner is in use, with the switch in the CARPET position, the blue light on the top of the brush will illuminate to show that dirt is being vacuumed. As long as the light is on, dirt is passing acrossthe sensor to indicate that the surface still needs cleaning.

QUITAR LOS RESIDUOS DE BASURA EN LOS CONDUCTOS

La aspi ra dora crea suc ción o aspi ra ción que levanta la tie rra. La tie rra es impul sada a tra vés de las vías de flujo aire hasta la bolsa por unarápida corriente de aire. La bolsa para polvo per mite el flujo de aire, pero atrapa la tie rra.

Para lograr los mejo res resul ta dos de lim pieza, man tenga abier tas las vías de aire. Exa mine perió di ca mente las áreas indi ca das con aste ris cos para ase gu rarse de que no estén blo quea das. Desconecte del receptáculo antes de revisarlo.

CUIDADO DEL RECEPTÁCULO

PARA CHECAR OBSTRUCCIONES:

· Checar la bolsa de polvo y cambiar alestar llena. Ver CAMBIO DE LA BOLSADE POLVO (pág 18).

· Checar filtro de seguridad del motor y elfiltro de escape y cambielo si esta sucio.Ver CAMBIO DE FILTRO DE SEGURIDADDEL MOTOR (pág 19) y CAMBIO DEFILTRO DE ESCAPE (pág 20).

· Checar Power Mate sobre cualquiersuciedad u obstrucción en el area de labanda o el area del agitador.Cuidadosamente remueva cualquierobstrucción u objeto locatizados en elagitador o sus tapas. Ver LIMPIEZA DELAGITADOR (pág 22).

Si la aspiradora aun tiene una baja succión,haga lo siguiente.

1. Conecte la maguera a la aspiradora yenciendala. Cheque el final de lamanguera para la succión. Si hay buenasucción en el mango de la manguera, nohay obstrucción en la manguera. Si lasucción es mala, remueva cualquiersuciedad u objeto en la maguera ymango.

2. Conecte la manguera al tubo telescópico.Cheque el final del tubo telescópico parala succión. Si hay buena succión al final,significa que no hay obstrucción en eltubo telescópico. Si la succión es mala,remover cualquier suciedad u objeto en eltubo telescópico.

3. Revisar el conducto de succión del PowerMate. Remover cualquier suciedad uobjeto.

1. Apagué y desconecte el cor dón eléc trico dela cla vija de la pared. NO rocíe agua sobre laaspi ra dora.

2. Para limpiar el exterior o reducir laelectricidad estática y acumulación depolvo, limpie la superficie exterior de laaspiradora y los accesorios, usando untrapo suave y limpio, mójelo en unasolución de agua y detergente líquido, yexprímalo. Séquela después de limpiar.

NO doble ni pliegue el centro del cartónal instalar la bolsa en las ranuras delmontaje de la bolsa.

6. Gire hacia abajo el soporte para labolsa y para insertar la bolsa en lasranuras empuje hacia abajo hasta que laslengüetas de cartón encierrenseguramente en las posicionesapropiadas como se ve en el diagrama.

7. Empuje la bolsa asegurándola dentrode la cavidad para evitar que seatrabada por la tapa de la aspiradora.

8. Baje la cubierta del receptáculo ycierre el pestillo.

9. Intro duzca la man guera en el recep tá -culo hasta que quede fija en posi ción.

10. Conecte el cordón eléctrico en laclavija de la pared.

3. Tire del pestillo de la tapa hacia fueray hacia arriba; luego levante la tapa delreceptáculo.

4. Saque la bolsa del montaje.

NOTA: El montaje rojo de la bolsa seinclinará hacia adelante después de queretire la bolsa. Esto impedirá que la tapase cierre antes de instalar una bolsanueva.

2. Levante el dispositivo de retención degoma y saque el filtro de seguridadcomo se ve en el diagrama.

3. Reemplace el filtro con la superficieblanca en su campo de vista por correrlodebajo de las costillas en la cavidad dela bolsa. Meta el filtro para que quepapor completo debajo del dispositivo deretención de goma.

CAMBIO DEL FILTRO DE SEGURIDAD DEL MOTOR

FILTRO DE SEGURIDAD DELMOTOR - ELECTROSTÁTICOEste filtro se tiene que cambiar cuandoesté sucio. Debe cambiarseperiódicamente según las condiciones deuso. El filtro no se puede lavar puesperdería su capacidad para atraparpolvo.

CAMBIO DEL FILTRO DE ESCAPE

FILTRO DE ESCAPE El cartucho del filtro escape tiene quecambiarse cuando esté sucio. Cambie elfiltro cuando el área superficial estécubierta por completo. El filtro no sepuede lavar pues perdería su capacidadpara atrapar polvo.

1. Presione el pestillo hacia abajo paraliberar la cubierta del filtro de escape dela ranura en la aspiradora.

2. Jale la tapa del filtro hacia abajo y afuera para extraerla desde la cámara del filtro en el contenedor.

3. Remover el filtro de escape.

6. Deslizar el pestillo hacia abajo paracerrar la cubierta del filtro de escape ensu lugar.

7. Suelte el pistillo y confirme que la cubierta esta segura en su lugar.

5. Para reinstalar la tapa del filtro de escape, inserte las dos lengüetas de la tapa en las ranuras de la parte superior de la cámara del filtro.

PARA RETIRAR LA CORREA

1. Desprendael cepillopara pisosde laPowerMate®.

2. Gire laPowerMate® paramostrar la parteinferior haciaarriba ydesatornille tres (3)tornillos de lacubierta.

3. Gire laPowerMate® con la parte superiorhacia arriba.

4. Afloje laslengüetas traseraslocalizadas debajode los pedales

5. Tome la tapadesde atrás y levántela para extraerla desdela base.

6. Desatornille dos(2) tornillos de lacubierta delagitador y levantela cubierta delagitador.

7. Quite elagitador y lacorrea gastada.

8. Examine ylimpie las áreas

PARA RETIRAR LA CORREA1. Instale una correa nueva sobre el eje del motor y luego sobre el recorrido de la correa.

3. Reinstale la cubierta del agitador einserte los dos (2) tornillos.

5. Rote lacubierta haciaatrás. Aprietecon pocafuerza hastaque laslengüetaslaterales ytraserasencierrenseguramente.

Cerciórese que no hay espacio entre lacubierta y la base.

6. Voltee el equipo PowerMate® y reinstale los tres (3) tornillos que fijan la tapa a la base.

4. Alinee la parte frontal de la cubiertacon la base. Coloque la cubierta sobreel borde delantero de la base como semuestra.

2. Coloque otravez la unidaddel agitador enla PowerMate® .

LIMPIEZA DEL AGITADORNOTA: Para mantener una alta eficiencia delimpieza y evitar daños a la aspiradora, hayque limpiar el agitador cada vez que se cambia la correa .

También hay que limpiar el agitador según elsiguiente calendario:
