Dear 4-H’ers, Parents, and Leaders,
We have several county events coming up in the month of Decem-
ber. 4-H clubs will be busy decorating Christmas trees with handmade
ornaments and placing them throughout the county at various locations
for our annual County Trim a Tree event. This activity certainly allows
the holiday spirit to be spread to so many individuals during this spe-
cial time of the year as many beautiful decorated trees will be complet-
ed by Kent County 4-H clubs. In addition, 4-H members will also collect
and donate Teddy Bears for our annual Teddy Bear drive. These bears
will certainly help to make a difficult time being experienced by some-
one in the hospital during the holiday a little better. Clubs will also be
very active with additional community service activities throughout
this time of the year. We are very fortunate to have so many caring 4-H
members and volunteers in our county that continually try to do many
activities that help to make a difference in the lives of others.
Upcoming events in December include Holiday Fun Day and the
annual 4-H Statewide Skating party. Information about each of these
activities can be found in this newsletter and we encourage you to par-
ticipate in one or all of these events.
As the holiday season fast approaches, we would like to take this
time to wish everyone Happy Holidays and thank you for your many
efforts and work on behalf of the Kent County 4-H Program. We look
forward to seeing you at a future 4-H event!
Yours in 4-H,

“Helping 4-H’ers Grow in Life & Work”
In 4-H, all youth can explore their future. Club meetings, events, camps and after-school pro-
grams are places to develop life skills and expand their interest through 4-H. During this ses-
sion volunteers will share ideas, receive resources, and see a variety of successful programs
that help youth focus on life-long learning, workforce readiness, and career exploration. Car-
ing adults can help all young people make decisions and create their own positive future.

The University of Delaware does not discriminate against any person on the basis of race, color, national origin, sex, gender identity or expression, sexual
orientation, genetic information, marital status, disability, religion, age, veteran status or any other characteristic protected by applicable law in its em-
ployment, educational programs and activities, admissions policies, and scholarship and loan programs as required by Title IX of the Educational
Amendments of 1972, the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964,
and other applicable statutes and University policies. The University of Delaware also prohibits unlawful harassment including sexual harassment and
sexual violence.
One of the most important aspects of 4-H is leader-
ship development. This month, meet one of Kent County’s
Jr Leaders – Hannah O’Hara.
Hannah is an 18 year old senior who attends Sussex Tech High
School and has been in 4-H for 10 years. She is the president of
her local club the Houston Cardinals, president of Kent County
Jr. Council, and secretary of Delaware State Teen Council.
Hannah joined 4-H when she was 8 years old and her best
memory from that time was attending 4-H Day Camp. “I
learned so much that week and was inspired by so many help-
ful teens that I knew I wanted to continue with 4-H,” she recalls. Her favorite part of the 4-H
program has been the travel. She has attended conferences in Georgia, Minnesota, and
Washington DC as well as participating in exchange trips to New York and Kentucky. Han-
nah also enjoys work in many project areas including archery, woodworking, science, citizen-
ship, foods & nutrition, and public presentation. These project areas were completed in a va-
riety of ways – with a project leader at weekend project meetings, at monthly club meetings,
and as self-paced projects. Each of her project areas were finalized with an exhibit at the
Delaware State Fair. Hannah has also competed in judging, demonstration, and public
speaking contests both at the county and state level. Attending training sessions on these
events gave her a better understanding of each of these topics.
I asked Hannah what’s the one thing every 4-H’er should experience and why? Her response:
“Every 4-Her needs to attend a 4-H camp. The traditions held deep within the camp give you
an eye-opening experience of 4-H. The friendships, the people groups, the council circle, the
memories, the tradition. 4-H camps are the soul of 4-H and uncover a wild spirit that touches
each individual who attends.”
When asked what the one thing younger 4-H’ers can look forward to, here’s what she said:
“Junior Council is something I suggest all young members to look
forward to. At the age of 13, you can come to the meetings, meet
people throughout the county and find ways to become more in-
volved. There are so many county events that need young teens to
lead, and that’s the start of leadership for your experience with 4-
H.”
Hannah plans to pursue a career in Marketing and Manage-
ment. She knows that her experience in 4-H has made her more
confident and will help her succeed in her degree. More im-
portantly, it will help her succeed in all that she does.
Diamond Clover Intent Forms
Due December 1, 2017
Delaware 4-H members are eligible to participate
in the Diamond Clover Award program. This
award is the highest level of recognition that a
Delaware 4-H member can achieve. The Diamond
Clover Award consists of six levels, each steadily
advancing in intensity and achievement over the
last. It is intended to take a 4-H member six
years to complete. The nice thing about this
award is that many 4-H members are already
doing the work, so all you need to do is fill out the
forms and submit them. For other 4-H members,
this award can provide you with a long-term chal-
lenge for your 4-H career. Either way, when you
have finished the process you have completed an
amazing journey that will benefit you forever.
And a Diamond Clover Award will look pretty
good on your college application too! To find out
more, visit the Diamond Clover site on the State
website: http://extension.udel.edu/4h/about-

Delaware 4-H Hall of Fame
In 2002, the National Association of Ex-tension 4-H Agents, National 4-H Council and 4-H National Headquarters partnered to create the National 4-H Hall of Fame. The Hall of Fame was established to rec-ognize 4-H volunteers, Extension profes-sionals, staff employees, donors and others who made a significant impact on 4-H at the local, state or national level. In con-junction with the national event, Delaware 4-H also created the Delaware 4-H Hall of Fame. This event is sponsored by the Del-aware 4-H Foundation.
The next class of laureates will be induct-ed on October 6, 2018. The event is planned to be held at the Modern Maturity Center in Dover, DE.

October Meeting through November Activities
Reporter: Shannon O’Hara
10-17-17 7:00 PM
At our monthly meeting we
discussed so many events that
would go throughout October and
November. But before we got start-
ed, we played a fun-filled name
game. We had major discussions
about the achievement banquet for
the following year and even pol-
ished out the activities that would
be held at Great Pumpkin Day! In
addition to this we reviewed every-
thing that occurred with the Trac-
tor Supply Clover Promotion and
decided that it was a huge success!
A program was held at the end of
the meeting which made every in-
dividual wonder “Who Done It?”.
Later in the month we would have
an amazing number of 15 Junior
Council members attending the
YAP Conference and plenty attend-
ed the King Crop Insurance Cele-
bration to represent 4-H. Our meet-
ing for November was held at the
end of the month on the 21st at 7:00
PM. As always, we loved seeing
everyone there!

December 2017
In 1933 governors of Delaware decided to declare December 7 as Delaware Day when we be-
came the first state to sign the Federal Constitution. Only thirteen states were established back
in 1933 and we were the first ones to sign the Federal Constitution. On December 7 and all
throughout December we honor and thank our founding fathers in making Delaware the
“State That Started A Nation”.

Delaware’s state motto is “Liberty and Independence”
The nickname the “Diamond State”, given to us by Thomas Jefferson, was deemed to us due to our prime
location among the Eastern Shoreline
The Delaware Bay has the most horseshoe crabs than anywhere else in the world and has been unchanged for
over 300 million years. Due to this the horseshoe crab has been named in 2002 our state Marine Animal
The state flower is the Peach Blossom due to the Delaware General Assembly voting as our flower. Delaware in
the early 1800’s was the leading producer of peaches until a disease called “the yellow” destroyed the orchards
