PICKS OF THE WEEK"The King's Speech" (R) --

Colin Firth stars as Britain'sKing George VI, who, follow-ing the death of his father(Michael Gambon) and theabdication of his brotherEdward (Guy Pearce), is in aspot of bother. Itappears ourreluctantmonarch has a bitof a stammeringproblem, oldbean, and mustovercome it.Enter LionelLogue (GeoffreyRush), anAustralian self-taught speechtherapist, whosemethods are, shall we say, unorthodox.

Despite divisions of class, the two form a lifelong bond, and the King overcomes hisimpediment in the nick of timeto give the most importantspeech of his life on the eve ofWorld War II.

I expected "The King'sSpeech" to be another slow-paced costume drama, but waspleasantly surprised that itmoved at a quick pace. Theperformances by the entire castwere brilliant, and there weremore than a fair share ofhumorous moments. Highlyrecommended. Pip-pip and allthat.

"Ip Man 2: Legend of the

Grandmaster" (R) -- DonnieYen stars once again as IpMan, the kung-fu legend whodeveloped the Wing Chun styleof martial arts and was mentorto Bruce Lee. This sequel con-tinues the story of the grand-master as he moves to HongKong to open a kung-fu school, but faces opposition fromMaster Hung (Sammo Hung),the leader of a group of cor-rupt masters, leading to afierce battle between Ip and aWestern-style fighter named

Twister.Although notas awesome asthe first film,"Ip Man 2" isstill a greatmartial-artsmovie, espe-cially if youlove old-school, down-and-dirtyfighting styles.

Mike Mencarini Kern River Courier columnist

I need to make a correctionon last week’scolumn. I statedthat the win-ners of theAnglers ChoiceBass Club tour-ney were broth-ers; in fact theyare a father andson team.

In case youhaven’t beennear the river lately, it’s closeto raging and it’s filling thelake quickly. There should belots of water for the Derby, which is coming up April 16-18. The fish for the Derby arelooking great and should pro-vide lots of excitement.

The upper and lower Kernare on the regular stockingschedule, according to Dannyat the hatchery. Remember thatwhen the water is at a higherflow, fish closer to the bank inthe slower water. The troutcan’t fight the current so theyfind easier spots to hang outwhile looking for that nextmeal.

I noticed that the south sideof the lake camping areas arefilling fast with only 11 days toDerby time. I also noticed that

this year, Red’s Marina is nowa fee area. So be prepared topay to camp or fish. Here is atip -- if you are disabled youcan go to Forest Service officeand apply for an Access Pass, which could entitle the cardholder to some discounts. Thecard is free, but you must showproof of a disability (paper-work).

The south side of the lakewater temperature is now at 60degrees, which means thecrappie bite at Joughin’s Coveat the habitat cages is in fullswing. Get there early; thebank gets full of anglers realquick.

My neighbors and friendswho bass fish tell me the bassaction has improved with somenice fish being caught andreleased.

Please keep this thought inthe forefront of your mind.Rushing water carries a lot ofmomentum. It only takes a splitsecond to sweep you or a lovedone away. Always put safetyfirst!

Crosby first met Badgett on a wild horse roundup for the China LakeNaval Air Base near Ridgecrest when Badgett was working for Bureau ofLand Management in and around Kern County.

The two struck up a friendship and remained in contact after Badgettquit his job with BLM and moved back to his beloved Eastern Montana.

In 1999, Crosby and her husband Hart Broesel, a professional photogra-pher, were invited to visit Badgett – he wanted them to see the Triple NRanch where he worked at the time. That meeting resulted in what wouldbecome a decade-long project for Crosby, who decided to film a documen-tary on Badgett’s life.

It also led to the decision for Crosby and her husband to move toMontana.

Harry P. ThalKern River Courier Columnist

Two weeks ago I discussed theprocess of applying to SocialSecurity to enrollin Medicare. Lastweek, I discussedseveral plan typeswhich may beattractive to somepeople due to theno monthly premi-um cost. They justmake co-payswhen using servic-es, up to $850 to walk into the hospi-tal.

As promised, I will now tell youwhat I bought. It is called aMedicare Supplement. The policy isdesigned to fit hand in hand withMedicare. As I mentioned last week,Medicare has various deductiblesand co-pays. Doctors can evencharge more than Medicare allows(excess charges) if they choose. ThePlan F supplement, offered by mostmajor insurance companies, fills allthese gaps. Medicare supplementsare often referred to as "Medi-Gap"policies. The Medicare supplementpolicy has the advantage of allowingyou to pick and choose your owndoctors and specialists. Your pri-mary care doctor can refer you toany physician who acceptsMedicare. Living in the Kern RiverValley, many people on HMO planshave discovered while they wouldlike to recuperate at our local hospi-tal, their insurance plan insists ontheir being in Bakersfield. Not so

with the supplement. You are incontrol. The best treatment for say, brain cancer may be in Los Angeles, with the Medicare Supplement youget to pick where you go for treat-ment.

Another reason I like the supple-ment is that my healthcare isn'tbeing rationed. There is no require-ment to call an insurance companyfor permission before treatment. Ifmy doctor says I need it, and Ibelieve him/her, then on with theshow.

Having +been in the health insur-ance business specializing inMedicare, I have seen it all. I rarelyget any claims issues with the sup-plement clients, while those withHMO or even (to a lesser degree)with the PPO plans are calling withclaims complaints. Since the claimsare processed by Medicare insteadof an insurance company, moreclaims are paid quicker.

Next week, I will talk about thelast element of needed coverage, theMedicare Part D prescription drugbenefit.

Turning 65, Part 3Health Insurance Matters

Paul G. Donohue, M.D.Courier Syndicated Columnist

DEAR DR. DONOHUE:Please explain urinary tractinfections. Why do theyrecur? My doctor prescribesantibiotics, but shortly afterI've completed taking them, Ihave another infection. Whatdo you suggest as treatment?A pharmacist told me that Ineeded one or two days in thehospital to flush out my kid-neys. -- S.A.

ANSWER: Urinary tract infec-tions fall into one of two types.Upper tract infections indicatethat the kidneys are involved. These are serious and less-com-mon infections. Lower urinarytract infections are bladder infec-tions, and they are very common. That's the kind of infection Ibelieve you have.

Women are prone to developbladder infections for a number ofreasons. One, the tube (urethra)that empties their bladder is muchshorter than in males, so bacteriacan gain access to the bladdermore easily. Secondly, the open-ing of the female urethra is in aplace with a large population ofbacteria. And thirdly, sexual rela-tions massage bacteria into thefemale urethra and bladder.

A bladder infection -- cystitis --provokes frequent trips to thebathroom, an urgent need toquickly empty the bladder or suf-fer an accident, and pain, usuallydescribed as burning, during uri-nation.

Women with repeated bladderinfections need to be evaluated tosee if the infection is a relapse (an

infection with the same bacteri-um) or a new infection (infectionwith a different bacterium). Theapproach to treatment hinges onthat information.

If a woman has another infec-tion with the same bacterium, thedoctor can put her on the sameantibiotic for a longer period oftime and can continue to treatlong after symptoms have gone. The continued treatment is with areduced antibiotic dose.

Another way to prevent arecurrence is to give the woman aprescription for an antibiotic thatshe takes after intercourse. Homeremedies can be helpful. Drinking8 ounces of cranberry juice dailybenefits prevention of the mostcommon cause of these infections. The kidney flush suggestion is nota good one.

The booklet on urinary tractinfections delves deeper into thesecommon maladies. To obtain acopy, write: Dr. Donohue -- No.1204W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL32853-6475. Enclose a check ormoney order (no cash) for $4.75U.S./$6 Canada with the recipi-ent's printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for deliv-ery.

Zach was OK. Ria’s husband, Alan wasstill in the UK for business trip. It musthave been hard for them to go throughit without Alan and with Zachary’s bro-ken arm (he got an accident while skat-ing 2 weeks before the earthquake), butthey were OK, and that’s all that matters.

“Rylan came by bike, Laura, Kimberlyand Yohei came, and we shared infor-mations about our other friends’ condi-tions and whereabouts. It felt great tohave friends around us, and knowingthat we didn’t have to go through thisalone. The conditions of the people onthe coastal area made my hands shake, remembering how it happened, not solong ago, in Indonesia. How extremelylucky I am, to be in both countries whenboth disaster happened but still I sur-vived uninjured.

“The afternoon came, and we lost theinternet connection. I felt a bit isolatedfor not being able to talk to my lovedones, so I decided to distract myself bybeing busy. I checked my emergencybackpack, and went to the first floor toget water. I filled the toilet tank withbuckets of water so I could flush, and Inever thought I would love the sound ofthe toilet flushing. I filled all the contain-ers I had with water, and going back andforth from 5th to 1st floor made me feelbetter. I met my students who live in thesame apartment building, and I was gladwhen I heard everybody was OK. I pre-pared the food and forced myself to eateven though I was not hungry at all. Iwalked around my apartment to check if

everything was secured and put downall the breakables, to prevent them fromfalling if another big aftershock came. Imade sure the exit was cleared in casewe had to run out, and make sure thatthe thick coats, shoes, and emergencybackpack could be easily grabbed on theway out.

“The evening came, and it started toget dark. We decided to prepare dinner, and while we were in the kitchen ataround 7 p.m., the refrigerator started tohum! The power was back! Wescreamed with joy and I called my lovedones right away and oh how happy Iwas to hear their voices!

“Another call came through and itwas my friend Hiroko. She cried when Isaid hello, telling me mine was the firstvoice she heard aside from hers and herhusband’s since the black Friday hap-pened.

“I went to bed that night with theheater on. I had not heard anythingabout the Fukushima nuclear reactorplant incident, but I knew the disasterwas far from over with thousands ofpeople were still missing and anotherthousands still at shelters with no power, food nor water.

“It was the D+1, I survived anotherday, but with all the uncertainties hang-ing in the air.”

(Ed.– This story should serve toremind everyone that they should haveemergency supplies available in the eventof disaster.)

Then she came and threwherself at His feet and entreatedHim. "O Sir, helpme," she said. -Matthew 15:25

There is a seri-ous misnomerthat assailsbelievers in Jesusthat holds to theidea of spiritualmaturity equalinga less desperateneed for thegrace of God. This notion ismuch more than dangerous, forit is spawned in the depths ofhuman pride, and if followed toits sinister end will lead thebeliever to faithless agnosticism- a denial of the very Savior itclaims is working such remark-able spiritual maturity. Whilesuch tendency is not difficult tocombat, it is most insidious inits capacity to hide its ugly facebehind deep spiritual devotionand remain difficult to detect. If your first response to theseopening words is this couldnever happen to you, I urge youto read on with a heart open tothe Holy Spirit's gracious cor-rection. Or if your heart isimmediately pricked with asense that you are being foundout, I encourage you to read onwith a desire to stay desperate-ly dependent on the grace of

God.The above verse lies smack in

the middle of an eight versenarrative that begins with adialogue between Jesus and awoman seeking a miracle forher daughter, and ends with themiracle being granted by theLord.

I wonder at times if all tooeasily we lose sight of ourongoing need for the touch ofGod's amazing grace on ourlives. The above narrativebecomes a textbook of humilityas we, like this woman, areinvited to continually come togrips with our own desperateneed, and the Father's deepdesire to strongly come to theaid of the needy (i.e. humble).Except it is worked by the lov-ing heart of God, let us be con-vinced that nothing goodresides in us . . . nothing! Andwith this honest assessment, letus forever come desperately tothe Father with our cries forHis grace filled work in ourhearts and lives. "God isopposed to the proud, but givesgrace to the humble," is Hisheart on the matter, and as thiswoman found grace more thansufficient for her circumstance,so too you and I will find thegracious work of God well ableto meet all of our points of des-perate need. "Lord help me"was her cry of desperation, andmay it often well up in ourhearts as we echo this samesentiment.

He was a prophet, butwhat’s up with the bullfrog?According to an interview quoteattributed toChuck Negron,of the musicalgroup, ThreeDog Night wasnamed from anAustralian abo-rigine expressionabout how tosurvive the cold-est of nights bycuddling withtheir canines.Negron explained that the songwas to spotlight the lyrics. Thefirst line originally read,“Jeremiah was a prophet,” but“no one liked that.” Evidentlythey liked Jeremiah better as abullfrog because was number 1for 6 weeks in 1971.

I like Jeremiah as a prophetpartially because among thethings he wrote, was a message,as stated in the song, “Joy tothe world All the boys and girlsnow Joy to the fishes in thedeep blue sea Joy to you andme.” Check this out, “For Iknow the plans I have for you, declares the LORD, plans forwelfare and not for evil, to giveyou a future and a hope.”Jeremiah 29:11. Hope did

include the boys and girls,“There is hope for your future, declares the LORD, and yourchildren shall come back totheir own country.” Jeremiah31:17. By extension, joy to thefishes can be understood from,“Praise the LORD from theearth, you great sea creaturesand all deeps, fire and hail, snow and mist, stormy wind ful-filling his word!” Psalm 148:7-8.

Please do not misunderstand,I am not saying what the banddid or did not mean by thelyrics. But God uses whom hewill for His purposes. Again, itis Jeremiah who makes thepoint. “Therefore thus says theLORD of hosts: Because youhave not obeyed my words, behold, I will send for all thetribes of the north, declares theLORD, and for Nebuchadnezzarthe king of Babylon, my servant, and I will bring them againstthis land and its inhabitants, and against all these surround-ing nations.” Jeremiah 25:9.Nebuchadnezzar was God’s ser-vant? Whatever Three DogNight did or did not do, theycaused you to understandJeremiah, give praise to thelord!

Lately, I have been workingwith a few clients that havebeen interested in horse proper-ty here in the valley. I have solda lot of homesand pieces ofland over theyears that arehorse property, but lately I havecome to realizesomething thatmost non horse-loving guysdon't. This valleyis a horse lover'sdream! There is so much avail-able horse property around thisarea, so much more than manyother areas of the state. As amatter of fact, I did someresearch and we are one of onlyseveralareas inCaliforniathat has thecombinationof a largebody ofwater, amplehorse land for sale, and ampleplaces to take those horses.

We have Forest Service andBLM land all around us, andtrails are everywhere. Weldon,Kernville, Onyx, WoffordHeights up Old State Road, AltaSierra, many places to take thehorses and go riding.

Horse property itself is avail-

able in Bodfish, Squirrel Valley,Weldon, Onyx, and parts ofKernville and Wofford Heights.Basically, anything that is zonedRS, for "Residential Suburban,"is horse property. The buildingcode says you can have onehorse per 1/4 acre on landzoned RS. You can also havecows, chickens, pigs, and prettymuch any farm animal in mostareas zoned RS. There is a lot ofland in this area that has thatzoning. Most commonly landthat is zoned RS is also zoned Efor "Estate." Plus, there is a lotof A zoning out on the southside of the lake. A is"Agriculture". You can havepretty much anything on agland. Another factor with horseproperty is the wide openspaces it typically offers. It isnice to have neighbors, but tonot have them so close.

So, per-sonally I ama dog, catand fishkinda guy, horses arenot for me.But if you

are a horse lover, think of theKern River Valley because thisplace is a horse lover's dream!

Rock types continuedRon BolyardKern River Courier Columnist

In the 3/25 issue I gave thereader some information aboutthe minerals, composition andtexture of vol-canic rocks. Now we moveon to the textur-al origins ofMetamorphicrocks.

Obviously, metamorphicrocks require an original rocktype that undergo the metamor-phic process to be converted intoa "NEW" rock form.

Basically, there five majormetamorphic rock types, whilethere are nineoriginal vol-canic types anda large spec-trum of originalsedimentaryrocks that canbe eventuallymetamorpho-sized.

The Metasediments of the KRVroof pendants are examples ofaltered sediments. The so-called"Lime Dike" on the north shoreof the lake is the result of thealteration of a sedimentary lime-stone into Marble and Dolomiteunder heat and pressure due toburial and conversion.

Some of the darker metasedi-

ments in the valley are eroded, redeposited and converted vol-canics. The term "Foliated"means that the rock displays a"folded" texture due to the heatand pressure that the rock hasbeen exposed to. Thus, the morefoliated rock has probably beenexposed to greater amounts ofburial, distortion, heat and pres-sure.

As discussed before, the read-er should be aware of these rocktypes but a detailed review is notrequired to understand theimportance of the metamorphicprocess. Geologists are alwaysaware of the various rock typesand their origins as they wish toreconstruct the genesis of theexposures as we did with theRobinson Cove outcrop.

The impor-tant issue isfor the readerto know thatthere are threemain rocktypes and tohave a cursoryknowledge of

their appearance and origins.More detailed analysis requires amore in depth personal studythan is presented by these arti-cles.

Is reading truly believing?Michael BatelaanKern River Courier Publisher

You can't always believeeverything you read in the news-paper, especially if you don'tread a story all the way to itsend.

Last weekwe did anApril Fool’sDay spoofstory on thefront page. Ifyou read it allthe way to theend, the refer-ence to thepublish dateof April 1stshould havebeen a clue as to whether it wasfact or fiction. With a publishingdate of April first, how could weat the Courierhave possiblyresisted?

It is no sur-prise that onecould believe anystory as gospelthat a personnamed John Truspeke (True-speak) could write – and many ofyou did. But what is a surprise, however, is what short attentionspans we now all have that wecan't read three paragraphsbefore passing on rumor as fact.

Lessons learned. How often dowe all go off only by reading aheadline, hearing a media soundbyte or passing on a rumor

before learning or reading therest of the story?

If our April Fools Day prank("Corporation buys Courier") didnot go far enough, just read "Is itTRUE that America's Best Mediaacquired KRV Publishing/KernRiver Courier!?" on Facebook.Richard Rowe picked up thebaton and added to and embel-lished our prank story.

It reads, in part, “TheAssociated Press revealed todaythat Rupert Murdoch’s NewsCorporation was behind theclandestine America’s BestMedia acquisition of the KRVPublishing, LLC empire, whichincludes the highly profitableKern River Courier...”

Seewww.facebook.com/pages/Valley-Leaks.

Having been a part of thenews cycle herein the Kern RiverValley for sometime, it just goesto show you thatthis saying is onethat remains true– "If you haven't

heard a good rumor by 10 a.m.,start one."

To come clean to all thoseproved most gullible, there wassome truth to our story. Media,Pennsylvania is a real place.

Dear Kern River Courier,

Time has passed since the bike park was taken from the CaliforniaRecreation Foundation (DBA KV Bike Park) and since Chuck, Chris and Iwere ousted from the Kernville Chamber of Commerce. In that time I haveseen numerous writings regarding the matter but I have yet to respond toany of it. I think now would be a good time to speak.

I was the elected President of the Kernville Chamber of Commerce anda volunteer for the KV Bike Park. I attended every Chamber meeting, butone, for the Chamber of Commerce in the two years that I served. I alsoattended every KV Bike Park board Foundation meeting as well as andalmost every Bike Park advisory board meeting, of the volunteers. I attend-ed every race but one and nearly every practice. I oversaw the accountingbooks for both the Chamber of Commerce and for the Foundation (bikepark). I was there from the very first thought of the bike park to the veryend. I watched community and outsiders donate, volunteer and pray forthis park to happen. So I think that makes me a real "know it all".

There is now a miscommunication (among the multitude of lies) goingaround that needs clarification. A bike park really has nothing to do withand can exist without league racing, associations, and membership fees. For instance, a bike park does not have to have BMX syndicated races. But, the reason to have an organization, memberships and races is so thereis a way to raise money to keep a bike park operating. The CRFFoundation donated and signed up as many as 60 National Bicycle Leaguememberships from its inception. It also donated bikes, helmets, clothing, and bus rides with its income from those races and it paid for many chil-dren to race each week (on average 20 to 40 racers).

Who and what made all of this possible is who Chris Brayman original-ly gave credit to from the very beginning and that is GOD. Yes, there was-community support, yes there were outsiders that believed in the dream. But more than anything else there was GOD, and that is the reason it wasworking.

Those folks who have written so many things and have slandered ChrisBrayman and blamed him for the bike park’s failure and theft of monies (toname two things I have read) really should apologize to him. The only mis-take Chris made was to meet me and let me talk him into building hisdream with the Kernville Chamber of Commerce.

My overall point is that people with huge egos ruin things when they getinvolved. I wish for all of our sake they would have left well enough alone.

California JoeKern River Courier Columnist

Her name was Nellie Cashman. She was lessthan five feettall. She haddelicate femi-nine featuresand lustrousdark eyes. Buther beautydidn’t stop herfrom joining amostly malefraternity –Gold Rush prospectors.

After owning a short orderrestaurant in Virginia City, Nevada,in 1874 she joined in a daringadventure to the Cassiar district ofupper British Columbia. The strikeproved to be a rich one and Nelliecapitalized on it by prospecting andrunning a boardinghouse for min-ers. But she didn’t find any gold.

In 1880 Nellie succumbed to theallure of a silver strike at Arizona’srip-roaring new boomtown,Tombstone. Instead of prospectingthis time, she operated the RussHouse Hotel where she was said toserve the best meals in town.

Nellie soon became as much alandmark in Tombstone as the BirdCage Theater and the O.K. Corral. She was forever taking up collec-tions and sponsoring benefits formen in trouble like the unluckyprospector who fell down a mineshaft and broke both legs. For himNellie raised $500, with much of itcoming from friends she had made

from among the town’s large dis-reputable element.

Nellie’s hotel in Tombstone wasraking in the cash. But within threeyears she decided to put it up forsale when the prospecting bug bither once again.

It was said that a dying Mexicanstumbled into Tombstone one dayand collapsed at the entrance to thehotel. The “Angel Of Tombstone”had him carried inside and justbefore he expired the stranger mut-tered to her, “Mulege, go toMulege.” His pockets were found tobe stuffed with gold nuggets.

Nellie Cashman, clad in overallsand a flannel shirt and with aminer’s pick over her shoulder, leftTombstone in 1883 with 20 otherprospectors bound for Mulege, aninland town on Mexico’s BajaCalifornia peninsula. Turned outthere was a blistering desert tocross and Nellie set off alone. At theend of her trek she found that theprospectors at Mulege were dyingof thirst.

Arriving at an isolated Catholicmission, she quickly organized arescue party of Mexicans with bur-ros carrying goatskins filled withwater. They reached the unluckyprospectors just in time and theysurvived.

She never did strike it richprospecting, but what she foundwas worth more than gold.

Rod MiddleworthKern River Courier Columnist

Yesterday I was browsingthrough a magazine calledCountry Living. On page 15 Inoticed an arti-cle called “ForThe Love ofLadybugs.” Itwas all aboutthose cute tinypolka dottedcritters we seeflitting aroundour yards. Itpointed out thatthese little ras-cals do the work of pesticideswithout damaging the planet. They prey on aphids and allkinds of other scaled insects. My mind immediately snappedinto action and I started towonder how I could find andcapture enough of those festivebeetles to work in my yardwhile they also save MotherEarth.

As I read further, it said thatfor $14.95 they would ship me900 adult ladybugs, which Icould turn loose to do theirthing.

I noticed that they said“adult” ladybugs. That made mewonder – how do they knowthat they are adult and notteenaged bugs? Wouldteenagers work as hard orwould they spend time textingother teenybopper bugs?

And what if the shipmentcontained both male and femalebugs; would they all be calledladybugs? (I have never heardof guybugs, but maybe I'm onto

something here!) Other questions developed.

What would stop those 900 ras-cals from leaving my yard andworking in my neighbor’s gar-den? Could I charge my neigh-bor rent, and how could I provethat those were my ladybugs?Would I have to mark them?

Furthermore, would 900 lady-bugs be enough, or was thattoo many? Could I expect to seean increase in the population asthose 900 critters start messingaround after the sun goesdown?

What would I do with thebugs each night? Do I have toprovide lodging and havecheck-in times? Will my neigh-bors be upset if they see hordesof ladybugs roaming in thegloaming? And how do I knowif all those bugs are mine?

Is there a mating call thatwould attract other ladybugs? How long do they live, and howdo I know when they'rethrough working? Suppose I'mdissatisfied with their efforts? Can I send them back, and if so,how do I capture them for thereturn trip?

As you can see there are lotsof questions that need answersbefore I commit my hardearned $14.95 for 900 wingedbeetles.

Even if they are cute withtheir little polka dot dusters andgossamer wings!
