As everyonehas noted, we arein the middle of amajor drought. Somy wife, Vicki, andI decided to drivearound the lake tosee really howbadly affected thelake is. There is nodoubt, as we could readily see, ourlake has been punified by our lackof moisture. Wenow have moresand than we dowater.

That havingbeen said, thefishing is stillgood and thereare lots of fisharound to be caught. The shallowpart of our lake is gone, but thedeep part is there and the fish arewaiting.

As we drove around the lake, wecould see why certain areas producefish while others did not (when thelake was high). A good example wasParadise Cove. Because the waterhad receded several hundred yardsI could see from the shore that cer-tain areas were deeper than others, and I could see why I could notcatch fish, while 20 feet away someguy was hauling them in. It wasobvious that these deeper holeswere where the fish were hiding. Ieven took out a notepad andsketched some of the areas that hadwhat I call fishing holes, and when

Things I have noticed...

The old fishing holethe lake was high would probablyproduce fish.

Not being an expert fisherman, Icould be wrong, but I always believein ‘dumb luck’ whenever I fish. When the lake is higher, I will scien-tifically be able to test my hypothesis.

However, as I sit in my old fishingspot, the shoreline is about a half amile away. Trees that used to snagmy line now sit on dry land lookinginnocent but ready to go to workwhen the lake rises. In the NorthFork area are oak trees that wereonce 20 feet under water, and are

now a treasuretrove of snaggedfishing gear ondry land.

After our triparound the lake,if today I were tofish in myfavorite fishing

spot, here is the scenario I wouldenvision. I would drive to ParadiseCove, park in my favorite fishingspot, take out my poles, open mytackle box, put on a sliding sinker, swivel, attach a 20 inchleader andNo. 10 hook. After baiting my hookand lifting my pole, I would give atremendous heave and place myhook, line and sinker in the exactmiddle of the fishing depression. Inreality as I would sit down afterdoing the above I could see that I’mfishing in dirt! So I’m changing myfishing attempts from Paradise Coveto the Dam and see what I can find.Good luck to me!

Performace deserves recognition

Julianne Moore in “Still Alice”

PICKS OF THE WEEK“Still Alice” (PG-13) -- At the

height of her career, Dr. AliceHowland -- an accomplished profes-sor of communication -- stumblesover her words during a lecture. Intime, Alice (Julianne Moore) losesmore words and gets lost during herroutine runs. While still physicallyhealthy, she is diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer’s disease. Alice’shusband (Alec Baldwin) and threeadult children (Hunter Parrish, KateBosworth and Kristen Stewart) muststand by as her memory and intellectfade.

The film manages to capture thedrama and pain of the experiencewithout giving in to melodramatictear-jerking. There is a satisfyingpresence of human compassion andlove, but nothing is sugarcoated. This type of illness drama comes offas Oscar-bait, but Moore gives aperformance that deserves recogni-tion.

“Blackhat” (R) -- In this recentinternational-techno-computer-thriller, we are asked to suspend dis-belief as Chris Hemsworth (“Thor”)is called upon to save the worldbecause he is The Greatest Hacker inthe World. So Thor is a computergeek in this one, but a hunky, stoiccomputer geek who also is as toughas any Liam Neeson character.Hemsworth’s mission is to stop abad-guy hacker (they’re called“blackhats”) who started his cyber-

crime spree by blowing up a nuclearreactor.

Director Michael Mann sure cando atmospheric thrillers (like “Heat”and “Collateral”), but this one justcan’t make it on style alone. Thoughit’s punctuated by some stunningaction sequences, a lot of the run isjust muddled plot points covered byscenes of people typing and pointingat indecipherable symbols on com-puter screens..

“Mortdecai” (R) -- JohnnyDepp minces and ponces his wayaround the world as a mustachioedart dealer, the latest in Depp’s longline of whimsical weirdos who gar-ner half-hearted favor from audi-ences. Charles Mortdecai (Depp) isan Englishman with upper-crustyaffectations, and a big problem withback taxes. To save his status,Mortdecai has to go on a madcapmisadventure to track down a high-value painting. To his credit, Deppcommits to his shtick. Unfortunately, the wackiness isn’t so charming, andthe jokes seem to get funnier themore they are repeated..

Creek Fishing TimeKern River Outdoors

Matt FreemanCourier Columnist

For TulareCounty and pointsnorth, the officialriver and creekfishing seasonopened lastSaturday.

This is seriouslyone of my favoritetypes of fishing -- simply because ofwhere you have to go to get to thefish! Beautifulsurroundings, tall high countrytrees and moun-tain views andpristine clearcreeks full ofeager trout. There are many goodwaters to fish north of the Kern Valleythat are all within an hour or evenless. Some are just north of Kernvilleand have great fishing.

Pack light and fish lighter, no morethan 4 lb. test. I always use 2-lb. testand just a tiny split shot and red egghook. For you bait guys red eggs andcrickets are the ticket. PantherMartins and Rooster Tails work greatfor lures, the smaller the better and flyfishing is incredibly effective increeks.

Here is a quick rundown of a fewrecommended creeks and locationsand what you can expect to catch, and all of them are close. Bull RunCreek, just above Kernville is a nicespot. It takes a bit of a hike to get intoit but it has a lot of trout, including

some nice Brown Trout here andthere. Access it on the trail at the endof Burlando Road.

Peppermint Creek, a tributary ofthe Kern has both upper and lowersections and some nice fish. It isstocked by the DFW throughout theseason and also has areas of allnative fish.

Brush Creek is one of myfavorites. This creek is full of fish andthey are diverse I have caughtRainbow, Brown, Golden and BrookTrout out of this area some even in

the same pool atthe same time.Access BrushCreek via thetrail off the largeturnoff andparking area just

before Johnsondale Bridge, the creekruns right under the road and thereare also other access points alongSherman Pass road.

And my very favorite is MonancheMeadows, the South Fork of theKern. It’s a 4x4 access road and it isworth the trip! No stocked fish allBrown and Golden Trout and someget pretty big. It’s absolutely beautifulup there and you will catch fish. There are plenty of them even withthis drought we are in.

Speaking of that, these creeks willget low quick this year, get up thereby June and get some fishing in!

Message of faith

Dan Schlensker,Courier Columnist

Not many of uslike to be labeled as“prejudiced.”Besides being con-sidered to be politi-cally incorrect, prejudice also car-ries with it thenegative connota-tions of unfair, unthinking andirrational. Webster says prejudiceis “a judgment or opinion formedbefore all the facts are known …[or] in disregard of facts that con-tradict it.” And most folks do notlike to be accused of operating likethat.

If we take a close look at our-selves, though, each of us can findways in which we are prejudiced. Our prejudice may stem fromsome unquestioned thing our par-ents, teachers, mentors or otherinfluential person in our lives hastold us. It may have originatedfrom some experience we’ve had, which, itself, was unique orextraordinary and gave us askewed perception of reality, orfrom which we made some stereo-typical analysis and came to a prej-udicial conclusion. In any case, weall own some sort of prejudice.

We would, therefore, do well totry to search our hearts and mindsin order to scrutinize our thinkingand heighten our awareness of thebases of the assessments we havemade and to consider the under-

Prejudicepinnings of the motivations for ourfeeling, thinking and acting.

At a recent pastors’ conference,I was brought to grips with one ofmy prejudices, which has to dowith people, who are disabled. You’ll hear more about that in myupcoming Courier columns, because I think there are plenty offolks out there, who share myproblem, and there are also plentyof disabled people out there, who’d benefit from a decrease inthe prejudice from which they areseen.

For now, though, I simply wishto give thanks to God for His notbeing prejudiced against us crea-tures here in this world. The apos-tle Peter said in Acts 10:34 whenhe, a devout Jew, was called uponto minister to some “unclean”Gentiles, “I most certainly under-stand now that God is not one toshow partiality.” When God tookon human flesh in the person ofJesus, He, as the apostle Paul saysin 2 Corinthians 5:15, “died for all, that they who live should no longerlive for themselves, but for Himwho died and rose again on theirbehalf.”

Having been so loved so freely, completely and unconditionally bythe almighty God of the Universe,we beloved creatures are stirredand strengthened to live withoutprejudice for Him.

The faith column this week is reprint-ed from May 16 2014. Dan Schlensker ispastor of Shepherd of the Hills LutheranChurch Lake Isabella.

honor a five day celebration, calledthe Floralia was held. The five-dayfestival would start April 28 and endMay 2. The Romans brought in therituals of the Floralia festival in theBritish Isles. And gradually the ritualsof the Floralia were added to those ofthe Beltane. And many of today’s cus-toms on the May Day bear a starksimilarity with those combined tradi-tions.■ By the Middle Ages, every Englishvillage had its Maypole. The bringingin of the Maypole from the woodswas a great occasion and was accom-panied by much rejoicing and merry-making. The Maypoles were of allsizes. And one village would vie with

another to show who could producethe tallest Maypole. Maypoles wereusually set up for the day in smalltowns, but in London and the largertowns they were erected permanent-ly.■ The Puritans frowned on May Day,so the day has never been celebratedwith as much enthusiasm in the U.S.as in Great Britain. But the traditionof celebrating May Day by dancingand singing around a maypole, tiedwith colorful streamers or ribbons, survived as a part of the English tra-dition. Children celebrated the day bymoving back and forth around thepole with streamers, chose a Mayqueen, and hung May baskets on thedoorknobs of folks -- all leftovers ofthe old European traditions.
