Principal’s Message

The spring season is upon us and although the temperatures have been topsy-turvy, you

can still feel that shift in the air. Through winter we often stay indoors which is conducive

to spending more time self-reflecting and drafting goals for the year ahead. The shift to

the new season springs us into action, to recharge, reset, renew and see our goals come

to life. Throughout the month of March, as part of our school’s monthly focus, staff and

students have participated in daily ‘relax and rejuvenate’ activities which are meant to

teach us options on how we might choose to individually relax, calm or energize our-

selves.

We have definitely sprung into action over the past month at Kettleby! Our Green Energy

Team (Jada, Anders, Katie & Amanda), TV/Video Production Team (Mikayla & Adam H.)

and our Construction Team (Eshal, Sydney S., Karen-Lea and Kyle) participated in the

YRDSB Skills Challenge in early March. We are very proud of their commitment, team-

work and effort from start to finish. Thank you to Mr. Gunsinger for his commitment to

ensuring STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) are part of the experiences

offered at Kettleby.

After March Break, Sarah B. and Ariel from Ms. Zafirovski’s class provided public service

announcements about Earth Hour and how each of us can take action for climate

change. Students at Kettleby responded to the request to ‘power down’ in a variety of

ways on Friday, March 23rd. Students and staff were encouraged to engage in learning

activities that did not require electricity. Students participated in building activities, drama

skits about climate change, discussions about ways to reduce the energy we use every

day and various poetry and art activities. While we can’t always work with lights out and

computers off, we can remember to conserve energy whenever possible.

The Junior Boys and Junior Girls Basketball Teams have been practicing regularly to de-

velop and build their skills in preparation for their Area Tournaments toward the end of

April. Thank you to Mr. Jones for coaching and thank you to several Intermediate stu-

dents for the assistance and leadership they have been providing.

The month of April is going to be a busy one! Milk and the Hot Lunch Program (Swiss

Chalet and Pizza) begin for the final session of this school year the week of April 9th. Stu-

dents will be busy with final preparations for our school’s Well-Being Fair (May 9), getting

ready for the track and field season, preparing for a school wide music concert (May 16)

and working hard on curriculum opportunities in their classes. Our Intermediate Band is

working hard to get ready for Music Alive on May 2nd.

Have a wonderful start to the spring season! Thank you for your continued support!

Scholastic Book Fair is returning to Kettleby PS

Thank you very much to Mrs. Prickaerts for arranging for our school to have a Scholastic

Book Fair return to Kettleby this spring! Last year’s book fair was a resounding success!

The book fair will run from May 7-11 and will have a wide selection and variety of books for

students and families to choose from. Classes will have time to browse and shop during the

school day and families will have the opportunity to shop on specific days after school and be-

fore the Well-Being Fair on the evening of May 9th.

At this time, we are in need of volunteers who have a Vulnerable Sector Screen completed to

assist with the set up and running of the book fair. If you are able

to give anytime during the week of May 7-11, please contact Mrs.

Prickaerts or the Office as soon as possible at (905-727-9852).

Please Join Us…

Kettleby PS’s Well-Being Fair

for Families takes place on

Wednesday, May 9th

from 6:30-8:00pm

The staff and students of Kettleby PS would like to invite all families to our first ever Well-Being Fair! This event

will be hosted by our students along with York Region Public Health. We have reached out to several community

partners who will be joining us including York Region Support Services (310-COPE), Canadian Mental Health As-

sociation – York Region, The Krasman Centre, York Regional Police and several other partners who will be shar-

ing resources on the evening of our event.

Through the use of our Parents Reaching Out Grant from the Ministry we are able to have Tiziana D’Angelo from

Messy Hands in King City join us. Tiz will be facilitating mindful sessions for families at our event. Refreshments

and draw prizes will also be provided.

Our students will be facilitating sessions that allow families to make mindful jars, stress balls, enjoy listening activi-

ties and many other wellness activities.

Be sure to join us on Wednesday, May 9th at 6:30pm!!!

Moving for the 2018-19 School Year?

If you are planning a move and will not be attending Kettleby next year,

please let the school know ASAP. This will assist us in making accurate

student enrolment projections for the 2018-2019 school year.

If you have a change in home phone numbers, work numbers or emergency con-tact information, please be sure to let the Office know so that we can update our records accordingly. Thank you!

Annual School BBQ & Fun Fair – Save the Date!

The annual Kettleby BBQ & Fun Fair is scheduled for Wednesday, June 13th. It prom-

ises to be another fun filled event featuring lots of food, activities and fun for the whole

family! We hope you will join us – it is a great way to celebrate a terrific school year.

Bus Safety and Reminders

Here at Kettleby Public School our safety expectations are simple: find a

seat on the bus with your own age group and stay seated at all times. In

terms of behaviour, we have reviewed with students that busses are an

extension of the school and the classroom and that they must be re-

spectful of each other at all times in their actions and words. As part of

our spring tune-up, we ask that you review these safety and behaviour expectations with your child (ren).

Should your child have a problem on the bus, please inform the school office. Thank you in advance for

Spring Weather

Please send a set of dry clothes to school with your child. It is particularly important at this time

of year that each student has an extra pair of dry socks. With the winter thaw impending and

the spring rains approaching, the playing field will be wet and muddy. It is also very important

that students have a pair of indoor shoes to change into after recess to avoid tracking in mud so

we may all work to keep our hallways clean.

Life Skill—Being on Time

An important life skill is to be on time. From time to time, things happen and let’s face it life can be busy and you

might be running late. However, if this is happening more than once a term and the result is your child being late

for school, it might be a problem.

10 Things to Consider

1) Routine is important.

2) Habits are learned early and good habits will help students achieve their goals later in life.

3) Students who are late often feel unsettled and unsure of themselves when theirs peers have started the day with-

out them.

4) Teachers and students are distracted by late entries.

5) Report Cards reflect absences and lates which often in turn effect learning and grades.

6) Learning and school matters. Being prepared and ready to learn supports that belief.

7) The sense of being rushed can lead to feelings of being anxious. We can’t learn when we are anxious.

8) Being on time shows respect.

9) Being on time shows responsibility.

10) We are all in this together and both school and home need to support

student success.

Birthdays

Please DO NOT send any food items to school to celebrate your child’s birth-

day or other holidays. Kettleby Public School is a Healthy School and we do

have students who are allergic to certain food items.

Thank you for your understanding.

fessionals Day. On behalf of our staff

and community we would like to send a

support our students, staff and school!
