Chapter 1

•The book starts off with Sam Meeker, brother of Tim Meeker returning from a victory over the Lobsterbacks. He begins to argue with his father.

Sam has to watch his

family fight and cannot do anything

about it. While they argue, he

thinks about what he can do to stop

the arguing.

The argument ends violently as

his father tells Sam to go

away, only to cry later in a safe area.

Chapter 2

•At church, Mr. Beach the preacher talks about Sam and what he went to do. After church, Tom Warrups, an Indian, tells Tim that Sam is living temporarily in his hut.

After Sam finds out, he makes an excuse to his

father and rushes to talk to Sam. He also finds Sam’s girlfriend Betsy Read holding hands in the hut.

The three have a nice conversation and first,

Betsy admits that she is on Sam’s side. They ask Tim to eavesdrop in on the conversations in the tavern. They then ask him not to tell anyone about anything that

happened in the conversation

Chapter 3

•Tim is seen talking about the expected causes from the war: nothing. It is not the violent Baghdad city people think. The only threat may be the conversations.

The conversations can get out of hand at

times. Father had to kick a man out because

he was being disrespectful.

Betsy catches up with Tim and asks him again if he

told his parents about the conversation. He says no,

and anxiously waits for word about Sam’s return.

Chapter 4

•Tim, desperately finding a way to visit Sam, finds Rebel soldiers approaching the tavern. Inside, people are held at gunpoint.

Tim finds his mother held at gunpoint and father in a struggle. The soldiers just want the gun, but Father

doesn’t have it.Father tells them that Sam has it. As soon as a soldier slashes Father’s face, Tim

goes into panicking. He goes to take the gun from

Sam but fails to return successfully.

Chapter 5

•On April, Mr. Heron and Warrups visit the Meeker tavern. Heron asks Tim to run an errand but Father is having bad feelings about it.

Father does not agree to this errand and does not

want to lose his other son. Tim decides to go

otherwise.

Chapter 6•Tim decides he will run the

errand. He looks for an excuse to meet Mr. Heron. When Mr. Meeker sends Tim to send a keg of rum.

Tim is given a letter to deliver. That will be his excuse to meet Sam. Unfortunately, he fails to

do so and avoids Mr. Heron

Chapter 7

• It is summertime and Tim successfully avoids Mr.Heron after failing to deliver the letter. Tim forgets about it soon after that.

•The family is short on food but have enough to live off. Two letters written by Sam are recieved speaking of his terrible condition there.

Mother wants to respond to him but Father strongly disagrees

because it is showing Sam that Father is totally O.K. with this. Mother writes back anyways.

Chapter 8

•Father and Tim must take the annual trick to Verplancks point. Sam is not here so Tim will be going instead.

•While travelling to Verplancks points, they are stopped by six cowboys who are armed cattle thieves. They question him in a bad tone,

The cowboys call him a Tory and when they are about to

shoot Father, several Loyalist horsemen arrive to

scare them away.

Chapter 9

•After being successful in the trade, Father and Tim depart the Platt house on to a snowy surface. Their escort had not come.

•The cold weather has caused the escorts to be unavailable. As they pass Ridgebury, Father speeds ahead and does not return.

Tim gets worried and panics. He does not know if he should go rescue Father or keep the cattle. He acts bravely and

protects the cattle.
