You alone are responsible for the

quality of life and choices you

make

things (Randy Pausch, The Last

Lecture).

• Personal choices you make -what is important to you

◆ What are 3 things you like most and least about yourself?

◆ Who is the happiest person you know?

Quotes to Ponder

• The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.

• Volunteers do not necessarily have the time; they just have the heart.

◆ Elizabeth Andrew

• Alone we can do little; together, we can do so much.

◆ Helen Keller

VOLUNTEERING IS AT THE VERY CORE OF BEING A HUMAN. NO ONE HAS MADE IT THROUGH LIFE WITHOUT SOMEONE ELSE'S’ HELP

HEATHER FRENCH HENRY

Someone may ask you to volunteer or

serve in a leadership capacity

Why Would They Ask?

They are thinking……

•You have good skills to bring to the task

•You will bring a valuable perspective

•Your work is well respected

•You have the knowledge to do the job

•You accept responsibility

•You are highly thought of

16

17

18

7

You Are Thinking…

•How can I get out of this?

• I don’t have anything to offer.

•Everyone else knows more about this than I do.

• I need to focus on my:

◆ Job

◆ Family

◆ Other responsibilities

• I am already TOO busy!!!

Let’s Look at Those “Reasons”

•How can I get out of this?

◆ Why do you want to get out of it?

◆ Is it important work?

◆ Can someone else do it as well as I

can?

◆ Is it something I have always been

interested in?

◆ Am I going to complain about the

way it is done if I don’t do it?

More Reasons•I don’t have anything to offer

◆ The people who asked you think that

you do

◆ Do you have a history with the issue that

says otherwise?

◆ Do you have larger skills (good

organizer, logical thinker, good with

budgets) that you can bring to the task?

◆ What specific skills/knowledge do you

have that will apply?

19

20

21

8

More Reasons• I need to focus on my (family, job,

other)______________.

◆ What are you doing when you aren’t focused

on those things?

◆ Would this be a better use of your time?

◆ Would having this opportunity make me a

better (spouse, SLP or Audiologist,

other)____________?

◆ Will this provide a good role model to

those whose lives I want to influence?

I’m Too Busy…•You will always be too busy

•There is no really good time-it is a

matter of priorities

•“Nothing will ever be attempted if

all possible objections must be first

overcome.” Samuel Johnson

Volunteer Activities Offer

•An opportunity to choose

what you want to do

•A chance to focus energies

on making something about

your job, world, or profession

better

•The prospect of feeling that

you are making a positive

difference

LEADERSHIP CHALLENGE

• Leadership includes addressing difficult situations and diplomatically dealing with controversy.

• Dual leadership roles – ASHA Legislative Council and Illinois Speech-Language Hearing Association President (ISHA)

• Controversial resolution for Legislative Council regarding AuD

• Large state, six LC representatives; very strong opinions on both sides of issue. Responsibility to represent all ASHA members in state. Conducted survey to secure accurate data. 2/3 in favor; 1/3 against; 4 councilors vote in favor, 2 need to vote against. Sent data to all audiologists in state.

• Four councilors unwilling to vote against; my vote represented those opposed.

• Next ISHA Board meeting, all audiologists resigned citing President not supportive of their profession

• Parting lessons

• Do what is right

• Make knowledge-based decisions

“Always do right. This will gratify some people and astonish the rest.”

Mark Twain

Don’t “go” through life –

“grow” through life

It’s never too late or too early. Right now is a good time to celebrate the

journey of life!

• What ever you do, do it well

• The best thing about the future is that it

comes one day at a time.

• In the end, it’s not the years in your life that count. It’s the life in your years.

Abraham Lincoln

Do not go where the path may lead. Go instead where there is no path and leave

a trail.

Ralph Waldo Emerson
