Competency review and editing is taking place to ensure the content aligns to the needs of industry.

The approval process will begin shortly after the review/edits are complete.

There is a two year open enrollment period with implementation the following Fall.

Pathway applications can begin November 15, 2010.

KSDE hosted 21 representatives from Kansas business and industry and post-education

Purpose: Receive external feedback on:

o Current outcomes on secondary (grades 9 -12) business education in Kansas;

o 21st century high wage, high skill and high demand career opportunities in Kansas; and

o What changes need to be made to secondary business education in Kansas.

INDUSTRY NEEDS:Underdeveloped knowledge of what is

demanded in needed job skills and expectations – Business etiquette Strategic and creative problem solving skills Intrapreneurship – adding value with an organization

Weak mathematics – Lack the conceptual understanding of applications of

mathematics and other quantitative tools Lack in mathematics and statistic literacy

Apparent existence of “silos” – Missing interdisciplinary enhancements Understanding the need to integrate from other disciplines

Reading skills are weak/non-existent

Other states are implementing more entrepreneurial pathways (e.g. Nebraska, North Carolina, Georgia, and Ohio)

Economics is needed in Kansas secondary education Management and entrepreneurship not only crosses

over into other clusters, but it is timely for KSBDC has received additional funding to develop small business outreach programs in rural areas
