MathleticsThis on-line learning website is a valuable tool for Year 9 and 10 students. Payments for Mathletics can be made on the parent portal on the school website via flo2cash or you may bring cash or cheque for $30 to the school finance office. The more practice you do, the better you will become at Maths.

ROAD AND TRACK CYCLING

This term we have started our road and track cycling training and have a keen bunch of girls riding. Thanks to Cycling NZ we have use of a limited number of road bikes and twice weekly training with one of their coaches. Already we have had two school competitions for those riders who felt confident or wanted racing experience.

The C3 Road and Track Event was held on May 14 and 15. Our track team (Mya Anderson, Stella Slomp, Siena Lowry and Kaly Harcourt) faced riders from the upper North Island on the Avantidrome, and raced as a pursuit team for the first time. We had some great results with Mya Anderson winning all the U15 track events to take the Gold track medal for U15 girls (see photos below) . The next day Mya won silver in the U15 girls 34km Road Race – it was a fierce sprint to the finish with Mya missing out on first by 2cm.

The Waikato Secondary Schools Road Cycling Competition was held on May 18. Our team of riders (Katie Lush, Mya Anderson, Stella Slomp) braved the pouring rain. Mya Anderson finished 3rd in the U15 girls race, and Katie finished in with the main bunch of riders.

Both road and track teams now have lots of training to do for the North Island Schools competitions coming up in July.

Warm Pasifika GreetingsWe have had a busy few weeks beginning with the annual Pasifika by Nature Festival, which we were fortunate to win, as back-to-back champions and culminating in the Samoan section performing in this week’s school assembly as part of the school’s recognition of Samoan language week.

Part of the Pasifika Education Plan is to raise student achievement. To address this, our area of focus for this term is Pasifika Mentoring. The girls have chosen teacher mentors who are passionate about student achievement and we are pleased at the response of both the girls and the teachers. Another aspect of raising student achievement is the Homework Centre which is held at lunchtimes in AO and after school in H12 every Thursday. We ask families to support this initiative by encouraging their daughters to attend these sessions and receive extra help from teachers and members of the Pasifika Council.

We acknowledged and celebrated Samoan Language Week this week by having our Samoan Pasifika By Nature group perform at assembly; Mrs Gordon also spoke about the importance of Samoan Language Week and embracing Samoan culture within our school, especially over Samoan Language. Additionally, we had two of our students speak to

our staff at a briefing to outline the role each of them played in the Samoan performance at assembly; and they described the importance of a Samoan National holiday: White Sunday.

Finally, we invite all families to support the Fono that is being held 6:00 - 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 15 at the EFKS Church hall on Greenwood Street, to discuss how Power Up, a government initiative can benefit families as they help their children achieve success in school. We are very pleased that Hamilton has been fortunate to gain funding for such a worthwhile project.

Term 1 saw us meeting and encouraging our Year 13 Mentors who had trained in student mentoring and were paired up with some Year 9 girls who we felt might need help transitioning into such a big school. A big thank you to those girls who participated and some Year 13 girls who went beyond what was asked of them.We farewelled Rachel McKenna (sadly but temporarily) off on maternity leave at the end of February. Rachel gave birth to a beautiful boy named Oscar and she is coming back to work with us on reduced hours from 20th June. She will work Mondays and Wednesdays as well as Monday nights at Hostel.

Leah came in to cover for Rachel’s maternity leave and she has been an amazing asset to our department. She has just slotted in and got on with the busy-ness of the practice. Leah will work Tuesdays and Thursdays with Rachel’s return.Robin has completed the Traveller’s Surveys with the Year 9 students and is at present organising invitations for some of the Year 9 girls to participate in small groups around many issues but working towards building resilience.

NEWS FROM THE COUNSELLING SUITE

Page 5: Kia ora koutou THIS FORTNIGHT · WEEK 1. We encourage all students to attend these tutoring sessions. Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday Yr 9 Yr10 Yr11 Yr12 Yr13 Mathletics

The Learning Support team at HGHS has had a productive and exciting start to the year. The volunteers from the Lions club have continued to work with the girls in the Hub, helping us to increase reading mileage and improve their reading comprehension. Their wisdom and enthusiasm for the job is a real credit to the organisation. They are also establishing a Lions Cubs group at school this year with the support of Leonie Bramley and Christian Baledrokadroka. Christian, Jenni and I attended a Lions dinner at the beginning of April and we enjoyed a presentation from Habitat for Humanity and a lovely meal courtesy of the Lions ladies.

Within the Realising Potential Programmes and the Hub at HGHS we have begun implementing the Reciprocal Reading programme, which is developing the girls reading comprehension ability and allowing the students to lead their learning. The girls have embraced the programme and love the autonomy it provides for their learning journey.

Finally the new Supported Learning Unit standards programme introduced this year at Year 11 is already proving a success, with the girls attaining their first NCEA level 1 credits and creating a pathway for them to access the NCEA framework.

We will continue to build on this positive start to the year and ensure there is “success for all”.

AUCKLAND GIRLS GRAMMAR SCHOOL EXCHANGE

Auckland Girls travelled down to Hamilton with 5 sports teams, Hockey, Football, Rugby, Netball and the introduction of Lacrosse. As the hosting school we started the exchange with a Mihi Whakatau in Nga Puawaitanga. This set the tone for a positive and enjoyable exchange. Thank you to whaea Hollie and whaea Frankie for their support and organisation with the welcome.

AGG’s played well in all 5 codes and never once gave up. However, Hamilton Girls’ High nominated the exchange with a 5-0 win across all codes. It was pleasing to hear from the AGGs sports director about the positive feel about our school and the sportsmanship displayed. He also spoke about the pride our students took in their uniform and the sense of students wanting to be at school. Next year we head up to Auckland.
