I hope all members had a great Christmas and an enjoyable New Year celebration, 2019 disappeared into the vapour as quickly as it arrived, not really sure where it went. The end of year celebrations at the November meeting was very well received allowing a good opportunity to enjoy the Christmas food (thanks Mal) and catch up with fellow members. It was great to see recently retired member, Len Harrison on the night. The auction of unneeded shed bits and pieces was also well received, with most of us going home with something unique! The first meeting for the year is just around the corner so let’s make it a well-attended one to kick of the year. David Bywater will be presenting the January demonstration, application techniques for applying super glue (CA) finishes to your turned pens, this will certainly be an interesting topic for most of the turners in group. Hopefully we will be able to fill the demonstrators slot every month with interesting discussions and tutorials. If you have something you wish to share with the group or know of someone externally that may be willing to share something of interest to the woodcraft group, let’s get it arranged. The more group involvement the better and will ensure the longevity of the club. What is CA Glue? Cyanoacrylates are a family of strong fast-acting adhesives with industrial, medical, and household uses. They are various esters of cyanoacrylic acid. The acryl groups in the resin rapidly polymerize in the presence of water to form long, strong chains. They have some minor toxicity. Specific cyanoacrylates include methyl 2- cyanoacrylate (MCA), ethyl 2-cyanoacrylate (ECA, commonly sold under trade names such as "Super Glue" and "Krazy Glue", or Toagosei), n-butyl cyanoacrylate (n-BCA), octyl cyanoacrylate and 2-octyl cyanoacrylate (used in medical, veterinary and first aid applications). Octyl cyanoacrylate was developed to address toxicity concerns and to reduce skin irritation and allergic response. Cyanoacrylate adhesives are sometimes known generically as instant glues, power glues or superglues. The abbreviation "CA" is commonly used for industrial grade cyanoacrylate

The original patent for cyanoacrylate was filed in 1942 by the B.F. Goodrich Company as an outgrowth of a search for materials suitable for clear plastic gun sights for the war effort. In 1942, a team of scientists headed by Harry Coover Jr. stumbled upon a formulation that stuck to everything with which it came in contact.

W.H.S. ANNUAL REVIEW 2020 Tony Walsh

Each January we review our Safety Manual for relevancy, phone numbers and club membership etc. We also encourage members to put forward any suggestions for general information change. Please contact our current safety officer before the end of February if you have something. I’m working on a couple items, one being the update compliance tagging of the 240 volt extension leads and power boards we use at the Expo. So, if you use your own leads/boards please bring them to either of the next two club meetings, Wednesday 22nd January or Wednesday 26th February. Barry will test and tag them ready for the Expo and I’ll bring them with me on Saturday 7th March.

January Old Fire Station Sales The January 2020 OFS sales was generally well attended by the public and provided a reasonable return to the sales counter. The devastating fires across the state made for some rather smoky days and perhaps some lower than expected tourist numbers appearing during the sales week. However, most tables looked pretty empty in most places by end of the week so maybe it wasn’t that bad after all? This was the first time sales money was banked and distributed electronically to the table holders by Ted Batty. I’m sure Ted Batty will provide a summary of the OFS sales week at the forthcoming meeting. Below, a nice shot of the steam train, a regular visitor to Kiama bringing with it many tourists enjoying the sites of Kiama and of course the woodcraft exhibition and sales.

March Expo Everyone should now have their Superfoot piece of Australian Red Cedar to create something of their choosing. We have a very talented group of members, so the next Expo should deliver an interesting array of woodcraft creations. Only 48 days to go, so let’s get cracking.
