WEEK TWO August 11-12 BIBLE STORY

Israelites Long for Egypt (Exodus 16:2-21, 17:1-4)

BOTTOM LINE

When you want what you had before, you miss what you have now.

Ask a kid: Have you ever felt content with what you had until someone else made you

feel like it wasn’t good enough?

Ask a parent: What things in your life rob you of contentment?

Read Ecclesiastes 6:9

Go outside and lay down on the ground. Look around at the trees. Is the wind blowing?

If not, wait a few minutes and it probably will. When you see the wind start to blow, jump

up and chase it.

Oh, wait, you can’t, can you? Well, you can certainly chase the wind, but what good will

it do you? Will you ever be able to catch the wind? And if you could, what would you

even do with it?

The Bible says that always wanting more is like chasing the wind. Just like you’ll never

catch the wind, you’ll never have enough if you’re always wanting more. And if you do

manage to catch the wind, or get more stuff, what will you do with it? Will you just keep

wanting more?

ASK God for contentment with the things He has already given you.

Reviewing the lessons

weekly with your children

will help your family grow

closer together as you

experience what has been

taught!

―I have learned to be content no matter what happens to me. I know what it’s like not to have what I need. I also know what it’s like to have more than I need. I have learned the secret of being content no matter what happens.‖ Philippians 4:11b-12a, NIrV

WEEK ONE August 4-5 BIBLE STORY

The Garden of Eden (Genesis 3: 1-13, 23 & 24)

BOTTOM LINE

When you want what you shouldn’t have, it can lead to trouble.

Ask a kid: Do you prefer to be around people who always want more or people who are

content with what they have?

Ask a parent: What do you think is the difference between a content person and someone

who’s striving to make things better?

Read Proverbs 30:8-9

If right now you could get every single present you are ever going to receive in your entire

life—every birthday, every Christmas, every graduation—would you want it?

Hopefully not, because that would make for some sad and boring years ahead. But that’s

how we act sometimes when we want way more than we actually need. It’s a blessing

when God gives us what we need for just that day, because it means that our needs are

met, and then we can trust Him and not worry about the next day either!

When you get a gift, hopefully you write a thank you note to the person who gave it to you.

It lets the person know that you appreciate the gift and the giver!

Get out some fun art supplies and make a thank you card to God, thanking Him for meeting

BIBLE STORY

King Ahab & Naboth’s Vineyard (1 Kings 21:1-19, 27)

BOTTOM LINE When you want what someone else has, it can make you miserable.

Ask a kid: Have you ever regretted not being content?

Ask a parent: From what you’ve observed, is the person with the most stuff usually the most content? Why?

Read 1 Kings 21:4

Have you ever wanted something someone else had so badly that you missed out on meals, sulked, and pouted be-

cause you couldn’t stop thinking about it? It’s easy to look at someone else and think they have a perfect life or every-

thing you’ve ever wanted, but that’s never the whole story. And what does focusing on that get you anyway?

-What is something you’ve been wanting for a long time that someone else has?

-What is something YOU have that you know someone else wants?

-Instead of focusing on what you want, think of how you can help your friend get their wish. What can you do to help

them?

When you think about and try to help someone else, how does it make you feel? Hopefully happy! And when you’re

happy for someone else, you can’t be sad about what you don’t have!

THANK God for all He HAS given you.

BIBLE STORY

Do Not Worry (Matthew 6:25-30)

BOTTOM LINE

When you trust God, you don’t have to worry about tomorrow.

Ask a kid: Have you ever tried to get as much as you could of something because you were scared it would be

gone later? Does that show contentment?

Ask a parent: Have you ever found yourself putting your trust in something other than God? What was it and how

did you learn to be content?

Read Matthew 6:25-30

Head outside for your time with God today. Take a look around at everything you see.

Make a list of all the things God made.

Now, what do you see that God made but doesn’t care about? ________________________

Hopefully you wrote ―nothing,‖ because God loves and cares for everything He made. If He cares about

everything—from a blade of grass to a hungry robin—how much more does He love and want to provide

for you?

Pick a flower or rock (with your parent’s permission!) and keep it somewhere you can see it all week

long. Every time you see it, thank God for taking care of all your needs.

THANK God for taking care of what He made, especially you!

WEEK ONE August 4-5

Week 2: God gives us boldness to follow Jesus. Bible References: Acts 4:1–22; Ephesians 3:12; 2 Timothy 1:7; 1 John 5:14; James 1:6 When it comes to following Jesus, we need power beyond ourselves. Superheroes are given special powers, and we are given a special power from God as well. We may not be able to fly or have super human strength. But God does give us BOLDNESS to follow Jesus. Jesus calls us to forgive and forget rather than getting revenge. He wants us to in-vite our friends to church who aren’t Christ followers. Jesus wants us to do the right thing even when everyone around us isn’t. Living our lives the way Jesus teaches in the Bible takes boldness. And we can’t just choose to be bold. We can’t muster up courage on our own. But we can rely on God’s power to give us boldness.

ment with words but what about our actions and atti-tudes? If you are frustrated with your child’s discontent – maybe look in the mirror or at friends or other family mem-bers. Then talk about it. How does it make everyone feel to be around people who are never happy with what they have? *Be thankful. It’s hard to be discontent when you are busy being thankful. One of our boys asked me one time, ―Are we poor?‖ I told him ―no,‖ then put him in the car for a little trip to see what poverty looks like. Then we had a long discussion on how grateful we need to be. *This is huge – teach your children to not talk about things that they get. My par-ents were pretty big on this

Contentment – ―choosing to be happy with what you’ve got.‖ That is what we will be talking about during the month of Au-gust in CWC Studios. How do we teach our chil-dren to be content with what they have? What can we do to teach them life is not about things? I was blessed to be raised by parents who taught me a healthy balance of con-tentment. Here are just a few tips from my folks that we tried to pass on to our kids: * Find ways that you, as a parent, are discontent. Yep, we model content-ment every day. Kids are sponges – they are watch-ing and listening. We may not express discontent-

one. This is something that does not happen naturally. It’s taught. Have you ever had that friend who brags about their stuff? Who wants to be around them? If you or your kids are hanging around people who do that, discon-tent can start to rear its ugly head in us and our children. I have this little prayer about contentment on my key ring: ―Lord, help me to be grateful for what I have, to remember that I don’t need most of what I want, and that joy is found in simplicity and generosity.‖ — Adam Hamilton

WEEK THREE August 18-19

P A G E 7 C O N T E N T M E N T , I S S U E 7

Week 4:Have confidence in God, not people. Bible References:1 Samuel 17, Deuteronomy 31:6, Joshua 1:9

When we choose to not allow people to influence us, their words and opin-

ions don’t stick to us. Instead, we get our confidence and feeling of importance

from God. We go to Him to feel good about ourselves. If our friends or others our

age put us down, it doesn’t affect us as much because we know what God thinks of

us. If everyone else is cursing and you’re not accepted because you don’t, you can

overcome it because God gives us confidence.

WEEK FOUR August 25-26 Week 5 – Your bold actions impact others around you. Bible References: Nehemiah 1–7 When you do bold actions to follow Jesus, that is a cause that sets an effect in motion. The ef-fect is that those actions impact others around you in a positive way. We need people like that in our lives, and we need to BE people like that in others’ lives. Not if, but WHEN God calls us to do something, we need that encouragement to do what we are called to do! We need strong friends to encourage us when we are called to be BOLD for Christ, and WE need to be strong friends to encourage others when they are called to be BOLD for Christ.

WEEK TWO August 11-12 Week 3 – Build your life God’s way and become strong in your faith. Bible References: Genesis chapters 6–9, Hebrews 11:1

If we want to be Hot, Bold & Confident, we need to build our lives on the right foundation. If there are problem areas, like a cup with a hole in the bottom, then we’ll experience the conse-quences of our actions. But if we build a strong foundation, then we will be strong in our faith.

Noah had an unbreakable faith in God, no matter the community making fun of him for building a large boat. That unbreakable faith became favor in God’s eyes; God protected Noah and his family.
