K&IM Survey 2018 – The Results June 2018
Survey objectives
• The survey was circulated to try to obtain views from K&IM members, CILIP members, but not necessarily K&IM members, and non-CILIP members, to get an overview from all the different stakeholders on:
– if interest in Knowledge Management (KM) and Information Management (IM) comes primarily from people working in these areas or an academic interest in the topics?
– what kinds of services and resources the K&IM SIG should be providing?
and, – which are of those services are viewed as most valuable and therefore
where the K&IM SIG should be focussing our efforts?
June 2018
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Methodology
• The survey, hosted by SurveyMonkey, was open from 8 March to 6 May 2018.
• The survey comprised 18 questions, plus final options to volunteer or get involved with K&IM and to provide contact details.
• We circulated the survey via the CILIP weekly news; the K&IM social link pages; the K&IM twitter account; LIS-LINK and the K&IM Committee members also distributed via their own networks.
• We received 185 replies in total.
June 2018
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Key findings
• The majority of survey respondents are non-K&IM members (59%). However 70% of all respondents are CILIP members.
• Most interest in KM and IM is generated because of work interests. 53% of respondents are currently working in a KM or IM role; for a further 31% KM or IM practices forms at least part of their current work activities.
• The top three resources or services of interest to survey respondents are:
1. Keeping up-to-date with developments in IM and KM fields 2. Continuing professional development (CPD) opportunities 3. Examples of documents that can be used to develop IM and KM policies and/
or strategies
June 2018
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Respondents are a mix of our K&IM members, other CILIP members and non-CILIP members
• We received 189 responses in total. 134 responses are from CILIP members, and 55 non-CILIP members. This allowed us to make some comparisons between CILIP member and non-member responses to particular questions we asked.
• Not all CILIP members who answered are K&IM members, which meant overall 59% of the total respondents are NOT members of the K&IM SIG.
• This is interesting as it means that there are a significant number of people who are not yet members but do clearly have enough of an interest in what we are doing to take the time to complete the survey. Hopefully we can encourage those people to join us in the future.

Majority of respondents are mid-level managers or practitioners
• Most of the respondents (64%) are either practitioners (non-management) or first-level managers.
• When we compared answers between CILIP and non-CILIP members the splits in career stages were very similar.
• Of the 2 C-Suite respondents, we are interested (disappointed) to note that they are not (yet) CILIP members.

88% of respondents are based in the UK
It was excellent to have feedback from both UK and non-UK respondents; this helps ensure that K&IM SIG future offerings are relevant to the maximum audience possible.

Unfortunately the survey compiler (Denise Carter, Chair K&IM) made an error and accidently omitted the South West. This was corrected during the lifecycle of the survey but does mean the results by English region are not accurate.

There are a huge variety of innovations and developments in the KM and IM fields that are currently concerning the respondents
June 2018
Q11: What IM and KM developments and innovations are you involved in, or most interest you, currently? Answered: 112 Skipped: 71
“Knowvember, an awareness-raising
month of knowledge management. KM is generally poor in the NHS, so any efforts in
this sphere are an innovation”
“Information asset management; building information champion
network within my organisation;
changing/developing an information culture”
“Virtual communities of practice; narrative of
knowledge management perceptions in the
workplace, organisational learning and the learning
organisation”
“Knowledge representation
software related to KM, L&D, ISO. Especially
software that addresses the
requirements of these industries in single
apps”
“How AI & cognitive will affect search will be interesting, but most
firms in my sector do the basics really badly so need to focus on
culture & trusting networks before they can add on the complex
innovations, or they’ll just be very expensive failures”
These represent a selection of topics which were also mentioned by
others
Keeping up-to-date tops the poll of what respondents most want to get from K&IM
• Continued professional development (CPD) opportunities; and examples of documents to use to develop IM and KM policies/strategies followed close-behind.
• The answers from non-CILIP members alone were almost identical, CPD scored a little lower.
• Comments provided separately also mentioned the importance of providing case studies which document projects that did not go well, and lessons learnt from those, as well as case studies on successful projects.

E-mail is the preferred communication channel
• E-mail came top as the preferred communication channel, which is perhaps not surprising as it is most people’s main communication channel, particularly in the work environment.
• Face-to-face meeting or
events scored highly (51%) and we do need to find ways to enable this in the future.

There was no real preference for training formats; but respondents did have a preferred learning resource formats
• There was an almost equal split between preferential training formats: half-day in-person; full-day in-person; webinars; and interactive virtual training.
• However evidence based information and interactive discussions forums with peers and experts scored highly as learning resource formats.

confident enough to share lessons learnt and what didn’t work rather than
always focus on the part of the project that looks glamorously successful”
“Have we considered linking
with other KM-related
organisations”

core ISG membership feels
included”

work in a library setting, but are
embedded in business lines”
“Important for CILIP to stress info and
knowledge and move away from the word
library”
“I am happy and pleased to be part of such a group.
K&IM is the future and has applications for
everyone so I appreciate knowing there is support
out there. Thank you”

any IM function in an organisation”

LIS Masters programmes in UK”
