1975 Kimihia Primary School, 1897 - 1997200

® The new building project began on 20th, a four-roomopen space, library complex and the remodelling of theadministration block. New court area, a sealed area infront of the school, new sports store and the re-modification of rooms 2 and 3 by builder J.Fredrickson.

® A working Bee was held to paint the two old prefabs tomake them presentable. Power was connected to thesebuildings.

® Forms 1 and 2 went on a stream study field trip at MrJ.Wright’s property at Matamata.

March® Annual Swimming sports at the Municipal pool. 70

parents attended and a barbeque was held in the eveningon the school grounds.

® Inter-school swimming sports with no major successesbut all swam well.

® Classroom furniture was carted in from Ohinewai andfrom Huntly West due to inaction by the Board.

® Exterior of school painted but the School Committeewould not accept the work so the Board recalled thepainter to re-paint areas. It still resulted in an inferiorfinish.

April® School Committee Elections:

® The PTA Executive were elected the same night:A.Horrox (President),Mr M.Moffitt (Secretary)along with a large working committee.

® School baths closed.® Social studies trip to Tokoroa® Stds 1 and 2 to Hilldale Game farm.

May® Annual Inter-School Cross Country run at Kimihia. The

course proved very popular with the very largeattendance.

® A ‘Spellathon’ run in the Std 1 to Form 2 area, organisedby principal and staff with $860 raised.

® Roll of 200 at start of term 2, with Mrs Cotton as areliever.

® Speech clinic held with no problems reported.® Rooms 2 and 3 were remodelled during the May holidays

with the dividing wall opened up and both roomscarpeted.

® The school’s first ‘listening post’ purchased.

June® Miss Davison inspected by D.Surting.® Four Year 3 students begin a 9-week section.® Mr Gregory attended a course for teachers of pupils with

hearing difficulties.® A Gala Committee set up for organising a gala day on

November 8th.

July® Sports trip to Ohinewai.® C.A.T. organisation presented the play “Arabesque” to

the school.® Parent working bee repaired furniture.® Principal, staff and office all moved out of the

administration block for remodelling with temporaryaccommodation in the new library.

® The whole building project has slowed up with thesub-contractors appearing to be the cause of the problem.

® School Committee meeting in Huntly to discuss aproposed Huntly Intermediate School.

® Sports teams visit Huntly Primary.

August® Mr Bioling and Mr L.Nilson visited on an inspection visit

to Mrs Bogie.® Std 3 to Form 2 visited conservation display in Huntly.® The PTA meeting invited Mr J.Hawes of Pukete School

(Hamilton) to speak on open space buildings andteaching.

® A vote was taken from parents on support for a HuntlyIntermediate School which resulted in 26 against and 47for. The result was reported to the Education Board.

® The term ended with a roll of 210.

September® At the beginning of term 3 Mrs Harris undertook relief

teaching until a long-term reliever was found.® The school was reorganised to accommodate classes in

the new open-space block (A-Block, Rooms 1-4) :Mrs Stanworth took room 1 with the new entrants;Mrs Donoghue (nee McKeon) took room 2 with year 1 and 2 pupils;Miss deLacey occupied room 3 with year 1 and 2 children;Mr Stewart, a year 1 teacher, took Std 1 in room 4.In B-Block (open plan) the ‘rooms were numbered 5,6,7 and 8 and held Stds 2, 3 and 4, being team taught by Mrs Bogie, Miss Kirkpatrick and Miss Dinnison.The C-Block setting of rooms 9 and 10 was occupied by Mrs Harris in room 9 with Form 1 and Mr Gregory in room 10 with Form 2.

® Teaching began in the new block on the 11th.® Mr L.Morgan is now co-cleaning with Mr Hedley.

October® Kimihia Choir presented items at the Annual Music

Festival.® Visit from South Auckland Education Board officers on

‘safari’. They were impressed with the new block andsympathetic to the problems of upkeep of the grounds.Many items of new equipment and furniture arrived forthe new rooms.

® Several ladies working bees over a period of three weekshave prepared $1300 worth of books for the new library.

® The temporary prefabricated classrooms have been let totender by the South Auckland Education Board.

® November 1975® Grand Gala Day held on 8th after 8 months of planning

by the PTA and School Committee rep’s. There was ahuge crowd and a wide range of activities. A gross profitof $2050 was shown with a net profit of $1750. The PTA

are planning an adventure playground.® On 11th the move was made back into the renovated

administration block.® The Principal attended a Lopdell House course of Co-

operative Teaching.® Orientation Day held with Huntly College.® On the 29th the school was used as a polling place for the

general elections.® Mr Davis of Waiterimu successfully tendered for the

prefabs.® On the 27th the PTA held a Dinner Evening at the

Wayside Tea-rooms in Te Kauwhata.

December® An end-of-year function was planned for the 17th but

cancelled due to wet weather with a parents afternoonand farewells held the following day.

® The school ended the year on the 19th with a roll of 224.Teachers to be farewelled were:

Mrs Bogie (11 years) to England;Mr Gregory (4 years) & Miss deLacey (2 years) to

Palmerston North to be married on January 17th 1976;

Miss Dinnison (1 year) to Tokoroa;Miss Kirkpatrick (1 year) to England;Mr Stewart (1 year) resigned.

® New vacuum cleaner on issue from SAEB as most floorsare now carpeted.

® Baths to be used over the vacation period as themachinery had been overhauled during the winter.

® The movie projector and the Gestetner were overhauledduring the holidays.

® Annual Swimming Sports held at the town pools with 50Kimihia parents attending.

March® Junior school swimming sports held in school pool with a

large attendance of parents.® On 11th the Annual Interschool Swimming Sports held in

the town pool. A full team of representative attended tocompete for Kimihia with a large measure of success.

® Committee comprising reps from School and PTAcommittees set up to look into the building of anadventure playground.

® Both top and bottom sports fields have had herring-bonedrainage plans completed by contractor.

® A very successful visit was made to Taupiri where 6softball teams and one cricket team competed with 100%success.

® Mr R.Cates of the Physed Dept spoke to a PTA eveningon adventure playgrounds.

® Mr B.Manners, area inspector, visited Miss Harper.

® Mr Couch visited the Maths Inservice Course while MrSeaton acted as reliever.

® Maintenance survey carried out on new buildings.® The Ministry of Works surveyed the fire fighting

equipment.® School Committee has let the contract for Stage 2 of

grounds development.

April® Mrs Bogie attended a Music Inservice Course.® The PTA Annual general Meeting was held; Mr R.Foster

(President), Mr N.Couch (Secretary; committee re-elected.

® The Principal and the PTA members Mr Foster and MrsGiles visited the Huntly College camp site at Raglan forfield day to present money requirements case to primaryschools in the area.

May® Annual district cross Country Race held on the Kimihia

course. Some 600 competitors competed in 5 grades.® School cleaners Mr A.Hedley and Mr I.Morgan have

resigned (retired). Mr and Mrs Hedley were made apresentation after eight and a half years of service to theschool. Mr T.Wills was appointed the new caretaker (43hours a week).

® The roll at the start of term 2 was 210 with no staffchanges. There was no significant increase of enrolmentsfrom the power project yet in site.

June® An open day was held in the new open-space block where

parents and friends visited.® The complete heating plant was checked and balanced by

contractors.® A 3M photocopier purchased by the school.® A Post Office Savings Bank representative addressed the

assembly on money saving habits and banking.® The B-block pupils went on a social studies trip to

Auckland while the Form 1 students from room 9 visitedthe Waikato Art Museum.

July® A pleasant afternoon versus the Huntly Primary School

teams at sport.® Hosted the Ohinewai sports teams.® Approval received for the supply of a new school name

plate.® A team of Periodic Detention Centre members worked in

the school grounds.® Over 100 people attended a PTA wine and cheese

evening.® Mid-year interviews hampered by very bad weather with

only 87.5% of parents attending.® Mr Wells, caretaker, stopped work by agreement.

August® Junior school classes visited the local bakery.® New Entrants visited Gills Garage.® New caretaker Mr Tompkins began duties.

® Mrs Bogie spoke on open plan teaching to a Year 1Inservice Course.

® A very successful and full discussion was held at an OpenNight arranged in B-block where learning and teaching inopen space was explained and parents discussed variousaspects of learning/teaching in general.

® The second term closed with 210 pupils.® $330 spent on the library.® A Buy-a-Block appeal in order to finance a volley board

raised $257. A parent contractor offered to build same.® Replacement plantings have completed all gardens and

shrub plots. Some 140 trees have been planted on thewestern batter as ground cover.

September® Mr Cameron left for Te Puke and Miss Kirkpatrick

returned as a reliever.® Mr A.Teesdale and Mr B.Manners visited for two days in

a grading inspection of the Principal.® Parents evening held to discuss school camp

requirements.

October® Interschool Tabloids Field Day held on Huntly Domain.® Forms 1 and 2 pupils began a weeks school camp

together with pupils of Ruawaro School at Oparau.Messrs Garland and Couch accompanied the group andthe Principal attended the first and last two days. The

interaction between the two schools was very pleasing.Parent helpers from Kimihia included Mr & MrsA.Horrox, Mr & Mrs T.Hunt, Mrs Couch and Mrs Peden.

November® Annual street stall by PTA raised $250.® The PTA sponsored a parents social outing to the

Waikato Motor Hotel. 75 attended.® Plans for the proposed adventure playground are well in

hand with plans and specifications approved by theS.A.E.B.

® Mr Flowerday and Mr Malone erected a volley boardbetween the courts. $258 was raised in a Buy-a-Blockraffle to finance this.

December® Many parents attended a school open day to see classes in

action.® Junior tabloids day and school sports day held to wind up

the year.® At years end Mr Garland, Miss Chick and Miss Harper

were farewelled.

He stood there - stared in disbelief -elated at his good fortune.

The mail had come - had brought the news,but still some trepidation.

Could he do it? Achieve success?Was he really fit?

To take on Kimihia School.....and make a job of it?

His worries were unfounded though,he didn’t need to wince,

That team of teachers had made it go ...and so have many since.

Since February of ‘71he’s seen so many new

But Marion and Judyhave stuck it out right through.

Side by side, supporting him,two senior places filled,

They formed a teaching nucleusfor years, on which to build.

The first to leave - the Thomsons -southward went old Pete

But Dot had heard the patterof tiny little feet.

Pete became quite famousfor a nightly escapade

He drove into the local lake,(not the only mistake he made).

Margaret McLeod, our ‘year one’ had turned our Pete down flat.

He really thought he ‘had it made’but her wedding finished that!

The roll began expanding,it reached two hundred and three

And then we were upgradedfrom V.A. to a V.B.

The following year - in ‘72to live in our memory,

Came Pamela Kirkwood, Helen Fyersand the memorable Gregory.

What a bright smile and a happy timeyoung Pamela injected.

The first school camp was held that yearthe school also inspected.

That year, too, we began awardsthe Form Two Certificate.

School house was shifted into townafter a lengthy wait.

In ’73 we enlarged againand he became a walker,

And Claire de Lacey hit the scene,and what a little corker!

She glanced around and set her eyesmost squarely on our Haig,

And from that very moment onhis future she had laid.

Our first year girl - Eliza Wattwas joined, just one term later

Our sporting teams had come alive,results were quite fantastic

In athletics, rugby, netball andin swimming and gymnastics.

In ’74, two faces more,to adorn the place, were sent us.

Liz Chambers began a two-year stint(and the horses nearly bent us!).

And Karen Johnston - remember hershe sent eyebrows raising,

But Haig and Claire, they didn’t carethey just went on gazing!

We had a visit from the Boardwith plans to extend the school.

An open-plan we had to have,John Dowling made the rule!

Two rooms were promised, to fill the gapand we were all elated,

But, what a mess when they turned up,they were only prefabricated!

Never daunted, never done,we worked on their upgrading.

But Haig and Claire, they didn’t care,they still just kept on gazing!

In one of those rooms, Kirkpatrick wenta new face on the horizon.

Her neighbour, too, in ’75, new,none other than Anna Dinnison.

Sherryll was to become a permanent one(acquiring a local interest!)

But Anna moved on at the end of her timeShe couldn’t decide who was best.

Carol McKeon was imported too,pretty, polite and all that,

But just like the kids, when teacher calls,she was called to “Matt”.

A musical lad, we’d never hadhis name was Jeffrey Stewart.

We couldn’t contrive to understand jive -we were square! (And we made sure he

knew it.)Ann Harris, too, joined our crew

later in that year,She was to become, in years to come,

the school’s number one reliever.That great big room was ready then

it required careful selection,But Marion, Sherryll and Anna began

and made a great job - on reflection.The end of that year dealt a sad blow

nearly a full exodus,As seven of the staff, to various ends,

decided to take leave of us.It wasn’t so bad, ‘cause two didn’t go

and the ‘Gregory Deal’ was now clinched!A bit of a mix, but we straightened it out.

In ’76, this place, it had grownand even still more were expected.

Six new ones arrived to join the team,not one single one was rejected.

Though here to stay for many a day,teaching mysteries to unravel,

Ken and Francene soon gained a tastefor a bit of overseas travel.

Then Kerry Cameron - an asset to have -joined us for just a short bit,

And who could forget that gay little spritecalled Bronwen, the neat little chick.

Elizabeth Harper from Wellington came,always as bright as a button,

And out little crew was joined by a newand still with us - one Helen Sutton.

A very strong team, that Kimihia staff,all knew each small teaching knack,

And to and behold, it weren’t very longbefore we got our Sherryll back!

In Feb ’77, we saw Vicki Stonedemonstrate her devotion

To our school and our kids, and later to Malc’who sailed her across the ocean.

We’re still not sure whether Moira knew,when she planned her life

And came to Kimihia to teachthat she’d become a wife!

She’s not the only one, you know,to take that final fling,

For Jane arrived with the Thompson ‘brand’but now she’s changed to Ng!

We mustn’t forget our Collins or Caine,that Des was a bit of a rover.

Edith’s been here for the rest of the year,’twas him from whom she took over.

This teaching list would not be completewithout all our helping peers,

It must include our Vat Gerrandshe stayed with us nine years!

And Lenore Goss and Avis Hartand lately Marion Stewart,

And Doreen Adamson, Jill and Trishall priceless - and he knew it!

Relievers too, and quite a fewhave taught within these walls.

Just grab the phone and - if they’re homethey’ll respond to emergence calls.

The members of the P.T.A.sand School Committees too,

A number far too great to listnearly fifty-two.

We couldn’t go on without their help,keep it going please:

The social functions, parents’ nightsand all the working bees,

Through the years the faces changed, they came and went, and yet

They built a power of happy times -ones he’ll never forget.

Not many have had this honourover years, to lead a band

Of dedicated teachers‘mongst the finest in the land.

Kimihia GymnasticsThe Waikato Primary Schools Gymnastics

Association held its zone and area championships in theY.M.C.A. gymnasium in Hamilton recently.

On October 27 the central zone championships wererun in four divisions.

Kimihia School entered four teams and achievedsome successes.

A Grade girls: Kimihia team gained second place(Lynley Holland, Karen Hartis, Cheryl Harper, Jan Tapp).Jan Tapp was judged second in the individual championship.

B Grade girls: (Jillian Seaton, Carolyn Stirling, DianeWallace, Suzanne Dunston), performed well to gain 11thplace.

B Grade boys: (Philip Gill, Chris Kendrick, KevinStirling, Robert Manaia) awarded 14th place.

C Grade boys: (Bruce Horrox, Roger Tapp, ShawnRutene, Wallace Rutene), gained 3rd place against somemore senior teams, with Roger Tapp gaining 1st place inindividual championship.

This put Kimihia A Grade girls and C Grade boysinto the final of the area championships, held at the samevenue on Saturday, October 27.

In spite of performing against a majority ofintermediate schools, Kimihia A Grade girls gained 2ndplace, which speaks very highly of their performance.

Jan Tapp gained the distinction of being awarded thewinners certificate in the individual championship for thewhole of the area.

This was a most successful season for KimihiaSchool teams. A total of 15 certificates were awarded toKimihia pupils.

May® Term two started with a roll of 242® Miss Stone left the staff to travel overseas. Mr

D.Collins has been appointed reliever.® A further five hours per week has been allocated to

Teacher Aide’s time.® Mrs Tetley resigned from part-time teaching as her

family is returning to Wellington.® The first 6 poles have been erected on the adventure

playground with help from a crane.® A new lunch service has started with mothers being

rostered to prepare ordered lunches each day. Fullprofits remain in the school.

June® Annual primary schools cross country was held at

Kimihia with over 600 runners.® A sales promotion selling pot scrubs and sponges

brought $136 profit.® Sunday mornings working bees commenced on the

adventure playground.

July® Mrs Gerrand resigned from the position of Clerical

Assistant after 9 years and 10 months. A farewellevening was held where the staff and the committeemade a suitable presentation.

October® Advice received that the appointment of Mr B.Seaton

was contested, therefore all staffing at Kimihia has beenreturned to the ‘status quo’ in the meantime.

November® Principal advised that his appointment to Mairangi Bay

will go ahead as no error of appointment has been provenand the position will be taken as from February 1st 1978.

® A successful excursion by 64 parents to the WaikatoMotor Hotel for the Annual PTA Dinner. Somefascinating stories were told.

® Summer Inter-school Field Day held on the HuntlyDomain.

® School burgled during the weekend of 16th and 17th. Nodamage but trifling thefts. All cleared up with the policeon 22nd. A group of young local boys were responsibleand dealt with by the police.

December® District and PTA gave Mr Seaton a great farewell with a

large and jovial assembly.

® A spate of unconnected accidents with some caused bythe hard ground. October® PTA bottle drive raised $341 for sports equipment. A

guest speaker from Hamilton’s Anchorage spoke at thePTA General Meeting on the drug problem and showeda very dramatic film to over 50 parents.

November® Combined Huntly Schools Music Festival held at Huntly

College. Kimihia’s item was “The Jolly Swagman”.® Book Week held from 19th to 23rd with special

programmes to promote reading.® Form 2 visited Tihiroa School near Otorohanga visiting

also the Waitomo Caves, sheep and dairy farms, an


agricultural museum, a piggery and Munro Caravansfactory.

® A reciprocal visit from 24 Tihiroa pupils who visited theHuntly Power Project, Rotowaro Mine, HuntlyBrickworks and the Huntly Public Baths. The day wassaddened when it was learned that three of the Tihiroachildren had lost their fathers in the Mt ErebusAntarctica disaster.

These two views are of what used to be “The Point”.This was a small promontory that poked out into Lake Kimihia and was used extensively as a swimming area. The grassed area in front usedto be the lake until the removal of the overburden from the opencast mine eventually filled it. The shrub shown on the raised area in bothphotographs is thought to be an original bush growing there in the late 1800s. From this location swimmers went out to the island as well asusing some semi-submerged tree trunks to dive off. These trunks were only visible at the infrequent times that the lake level dropped.

After 25 years atKimihia School, teacherMarion Bogie is leaving fora new job at FranktonSchool.

When she started atKimihia in 1961 it was atwo-teacher school, later tobe rebuilt to cope withincreased populationbecause of the building ofthe power station.

Her first day at thenew building wasmemorable - there was atropical cyclone near NewZealand and the new schoolground became a mudbath.

Mrs Bogie has akeen interest in schoollibraries. She is going to a newly created job as teacher-librarian, a job which includes organising school learningresources.

She has always enjoyed books and wanted to be alibrarian before training as a teacher.

She says there are a lot more books in schools nowthan when she started teaching in the 1950’s and today’sbooks reflect the social changes that have taken place.

“Now we have a wealth of picture books and lots ofexciting illustrations. There are picture books for olderchildren too, and paperbacks mean books are moreavailable.”

She says the best thing a parent can do to help theirchildren’s education is to read to them. “It’s the mostimportant part of their home education.”

One challenge in her time at Kimihia has been theopen plan classroom.

“I had to learn to work as a a team, be flexible andtolerant and be able to organise things. In open plan childrenlearn to be responsible and my aim is to build them up to beresponsible for their own learning.”

Team work among teachers is a part of the open plansystem and she believes the children benefit greatly becausethe teachers share their strengths.

Teacher leaves Kimihia after 25 years

One of the things that concerns her is violencedisplayed through television and videos.

“I notice an increasing amount of violence comingthrough in the things children write and I wonder if it isbecause they see violence on television and videos.”

She thinks there is a lot more demands on teachersnow, this starting with the big education changes back inthe 60’s.

“Teachers are office workers, housekeepers, andhave so many demands because of the curriculum. Oncewhen you taught social studies it was all facts - now we talkabout problems and try to extend the children’s thinking.”

“There is a wider range of things to be taught.Regular in-service training is vital so teachers can keepup-to-date. This is one of the big issues now.”

Mrs Bogie is sad that her new appointment meansleaving Kimihia School. She says she will miss the childrenand the team she has worked with, including principal MickMather.

During her time in Huntly she has been involved inmany areas of the community. These include a stronginvolvement in setting up the Day Care Centre, bridge, golfand toastmasters. She is past president of Huntly Businessand Professional Women and has been involved in theHuntly Art and Craft Club.

SUBSIDENCE CONCERNSConcern expressed by Kimihia School principal

Mick Mather at apparent subsidence of the school buildingsat the end of 1988 prompted correspondence betweenarchitects and engineers.

Two of these letters clearly explain the situation.

17 January 1989ATTENTION: J W KELLAWAYREPORT ON KIMIHIA SCHOOLGROUND SUBSIDENCE

The entire building area with the exception of dentalclinic, swimming pool and dressing sheds is showingevidence of a general subsidence. Almost without exception,there is visible evidence around base of buildings of an evensubsidence of approximately 12 mm.

The interesting fact is that the ground has subsided soevenly throughout the entire length of all the permanentclassrooms and admin block.

On the rear, side and front wall of rear c/room blockthere is evidence of many cracks that have been filled inwith a thin mortar paint. However, there are still portions ofthis 1.3 high block foundation wall that shows newer cracksthat run vertically from ground to floor level at centres asclose as 200 mm apart.

I visited four private residence across the road fromschool plus one at rear of school site and found virtually nosigns of any subsidence occurring.

The residential area 1/10th of a kilometre to west ofschool on other side of Russell Road is generally known tobe riddled below with mine shafts.

There is a coal mine approx. .75 of a kilometre NE ofschool building site.

All classrooms and administration block areconstructed with permanent materials, eg continuousconcrete or block foundations, and concrete floors. Note: allbrick veneer walls above floor level are not affected bycracks.

All classrooms and admin are within the subsidencearea.

The principal of school, Mr Robert Mather, told methat in his ten years of teaching at Kimihia School that hehas only noticed evidence of foundations cracking andsubsidence occurring during the past two years. During thattime he showed me where the concrete paving had dropped20 mm.

The area he is referring to is in front of the 2 c/roomblock on east side of site.

I believe that the ground at the rear of this block hassubsided considerably more than this. Refer to photos 45, 46also see photos 47 and 48 at rear of 4/class room west block.Mr Mather also said that he knew of a mine shaft that runsnorth-south across the main play field adjacent to theswimming pool. He did not know of any information ofother shafts below school buildings.

So far, the degree of subsidence shown on the photosdoes not appear to be cause for too much concern. If itbecomes worse I recommend that a consulting engineerspecialising in soils and foundations should be called in, asthe origin of the subsidence is not clear cut.

For the record, earthworks were carried out 23 yearsago. The building platform was constructed 146 ft long, ofwhich the western section of about 30 ft comprised a wedgeshape cut with a maximum depth of 1½ ft and the easternsection of about 116 ft comprised a wedge shaped fill with amaximum depth of 5½ ft. There is no record of any unusualproblems with compaction or underground water in thebuilding area during construction. Subsoil drainage had tobe provided later to drain wet areas in the playfields. Thesoil is heavy clay.

1. Insufficient compaction of filling duringconstruction is not the reason for the subsidence because (a)subsidence has occurred as much over the cut area as the fillarea (b) the dental clinic area has not subsided at all,although it is on the area of deepest fill (c) the principalstates settlement on the area of greatest fill has occurredonly in the last 2 years - settlement of poorly compacted soilis greatest immediately after completion of earthworks,reducing with the passage of time and normally becomingnegligible within about 10 years (d) although the northernblock was not constructed until 9 years after the otherbuildings, the degree of subsidence is similar there to therest of the building area.

2. Shortcomings in building construction seemunlikely to be the basic cause because of the widespread andrelatively equal nature of the subsidence, even at the blockwhich was constructed later. (This block was constructed bythe same builder who built the first buildings and was notknown as one of our best builders.)

3. Slumping due to underground mining operations isa possibility but does not seem likely given the widespreadand generally even nature of the subsidence and the lack ofsubsidence on neighbouring properties and also at theswimming pool. The latter is particularly significant if it isindeed close above a mine shaft as stated by the principal.However, Coalcorp should be invited to comment and askedto supply plans of underground workings in relation to theschool site.

4. With our present limited information, my guess isthat the underlying clays have shrunk as they dried outduring the three dry years experienced in the Waikato areaprior to 1988. During this period the water table shrankconsiderably over the whole district, many people having todeepen bores which had never given trouble before. Theheavy wet clay in this area would shrink considerably ifdried.

Kimihia welcomes newPrincipalHuntly Press - 19-6-91

Kimihia Primary School has a new principal who took up hisposition at the beginning of this term. He is John Robinson and heis married with three children.

He is a staunch advocate of the New Zealand educationstandards which he says “rated very highly” by people familiar withthe education systems and education researchers, who are qualifiedto judge from their experience of education in many countries.

This contrasts strongly with the message being put across bysuch groups as the Business Roundtable he says, who tend to seeeducation in terms of fodder for their employee needs.

“New Zealand redaing standards are recognized as beingamong the highest in the world’” he adds.

He comes to Huntly from Kaurilands Primary School,Titirangi in West Auckland where he was deputy principal for threeand a half years. The school had about 500 puypils.

During his time there he and his family also enjoyed a year’sexchange in a Yorkshire primary school at Grimethorp.

Most of his teaching career of 15 years has been spent inAuckland except for two short stints in Christchurch and NewPlymouth.

He has been impressed by the “commitment andprofessionalism” of staff at Kimihia since arriving there three weeksago and expects to build on this good base.

“I believe you have to set high standards for the students andthat means setting them for yourself.”

Administration tends to be an ever-increasing burden forprincipals, especially since Tomorrows Schools, but Mr Robinsonwants to keep it in its rightful place as subordinate to human needs.

He is presently in the second year of a masters degree ineducation administration at Massey University which eats up a lotof his leisure, leaving little time for sport which he normally enjoys,though he still manges some “light jogging” to keep fit.

‘Flash’ school hall openedWhen Len Rosser went to Kimihia Primary School

there was one room for the school’s 30 pupils.He thinks it’s “just great” the school, near Huntly,

celebrated the completion of its community hall today.Mr Rosser was born in Huntly in 1912 and moved out

to Kimihia as a five-year-old in 1917.He’s been there the rest of his 80 years, raised one

child, is the proud grandfather of two and the great-grandfather of two more.

Mr Rosser said the new hall was a great tribute to thecommunity who fundraised, dug the foundations and helpedwith the hall’s construction.

“I’m a bit old for most of the work but I helped outwith the raffles and that sort of thing.”

The hall included a modern kitchen, toilets andstorage room and the basement will house the caretaker anddouble as the school resource room.

School principal John Robinson said the hall wouldfill many of the school’s needs.

“Now we have a place for assemblies, cultural groupperformances, plays.”

Mr Rosser said what few functions were held in hisday were all held in the school’s solitary classroom.

“So it’s just great we’ve got this flash thing to hold

no hall. Then for a long time it had neither. Now,after six long years of fund-raising, it has a hall.

The primary school, first established in theKimihia community 120 (sic) years ago, hasalways been “the centre of district affairs fromkitchen evenings to political meetings as there isno hall” comments the 1957 jubilee booklet.

Principal John Robinson wants the hall tobe a focal point for the communit because it is a“community hall”, he emphasises.

The hall project began with theestablishment of a committee in June 1986.Whilst being singularly unlucky when it came toattracting large scale funding from major sources,the community has stuck to the projecttenaciously with fundraising and at the eleventhhour has finally got a grant from the Ministry ofEducation.

Over the years the Kimihia Fun Runbecame an established and popular item on thelocal calendar of events.

Other memorable occasions wereperformances by show-biz personalities and exKimihia residents the Topp Twins, a monsterSteptoe Auction, a Silver fern Railcar trip toWaiouru Army Museum and regular raffles.

The community raised $70,000 andreceived grants from the Lotteries and HillaryCommission.

After dragging its feet the Ministry hasfinally agreed at the fourth request and afterinitially offering a two to one dollar subsidy, tocontribute a very welcome $80,000.

Architects and project managers were 5+1Architects Ltd and builders Jennian Developments Ltd.

On Thursday march 19th there was a ceremonialblessing of the site, known as a Poutokomanawa, whichinvolves laying the foundation peg at the main door entry.

Seven months later, on October 7, the newlycompleted hall was blessed in a Maori ceremony and beganto be used.

Now the finishing touches have been made, shrubsand trees planted around the attractive building and acelebration is planned for Friday November 20 withafternoon tea, a barbeque and evening social.
