Avon’s Jillian DempseySheer Glow All Over face powder, $11 (right)This pretty little compacthas an array of colors, which, brushed on with a big fatface brush, do what thename promises. It gives agreat glow, and in a pinchyou can use the individualcolors on the eyes too. Lovedit. — Kimiko Martinez

Revlon makeup eraser pen, $6.99 (left)The liner remover is excellent. However, you want tomake sure it doesn’t dry out. It removes liner welland is a good investment if you’re prone to makingmistakes in applying makeup. — Kim MitchellAlmay “Bare it All” Legs, $9.99It comes in an aerosol can and makes your legs lookflawless. It’s amazing. — Kelly KendallSally Hansen No Chip 10 Day Color,$4.49 (right)I picked this up in Resilient Red, and

it’s my new favorite. The color is rich, evenwith just one coat. But for best results, use two. It didn’t go 10 days, but I’mpretty hard on my nails and it lasted longerthan a lot of others I’ve used. Probablywould have lasted even longer if I hadapplied a top coat. — Kimiko Martinez

L’Oreal Colour Riche lip gloss,$7.99 (left)I actually really liked this one. Itwasn’t too slippery or sticky, it stayed on andhad good color, but not too much. — KateJohnsonNeutrogena Instant Nail Enhancer, $7.99I’m a huge fan of stuff that just enhances natu-ral beauty, so I tried this in Buffed Sheen. And Idon’t wear nail polish often, so this was great. It’s not a polish, just a liquid formula with vita-mins that you brush on and still lets your nailsbreathe. It made my nails look like I’d buffedthem, nice and shiny, and it did keep them frompeeling and chipping as much as they usually do.

— Kimiko MartinezBurt’s Bees Lip Shimmers, $4.They’re just like the (lip balm), but with color. And theydon’t get all sticky or gross.— Michelle Pemberton

STAFFERS: WHAT WE’D SPLURGE ON! “Yves Saint Laurent ‘Volume Effet Faux Cils’ mascara, $26. It’s the next best thing tofalse eyelashes. And Tarte cheek stain, $28 at Sephora.” — Kelly Kendall! “M-A-C paint in Untitled, $16. It’s like a foundation for my eyelids. And Artistry loosepowder, $20.55. I don’t wear foundation, so I just brush on some medium powder to evenout my tone, and I’m out the door.” — Kimiko Martinez

dmit it. You may love M-A-C and swear byyour $100 anti-aging face cream, but you’renot averse to strolling through the cosmeticsaisle at the drugstore. You’ve been grabbingthat same Maybelline mascara since high

school, and it hasn’t let you down yet.Just because it’s inexpensive doesn’t mean it’s infer-

ior. But you do, usually, get what you pay for. One $5mascara can leave you with flakes and raccoon eyes, while another performs flawlessly. But which productsstand up and stand out?

Members of our staff — of varying ages and skintypes — tried dozens of beauty products, each pricedunder $10 at local drugstores, to see which ones we’dactually use again. Here are our favorites:

The value of the U.S.dollar is shrinking abroad.

But it’s not stopping Hoo-sier travelers from makingsummer plans for Europe, local travel agents say.

“There’s the customarygrumbling,” said Kelly Sheaof Earle Travel on the North-side. “But the people whowant to go to Europe willgo to Europe.”

“My travelers are moreconcerned about space andcrowds over there this sum-mer,” said Mark Moorheadof The Travel Agent in Car-mel.

The dollar hit a 26-yearlow last week against theBritish pound, cracking the$2 mark. U.S. currency alsocame within a cent of an all-time low against the euro. The pound was still slightlyabove $2 and the euro justover $1.36 Wednesday.

“This has been going onfor some time, yet travel toEurope was in big numbersfor 2006,” said Tim Leffel, travel expert and author of“Make Your Travel DollarsWorth a Fortune” (Trav-eler’s Tales, $12.95).

Nearly 13 millionAmericans visited Europein 2006, a 4 percent in-crease over 2005.

“People are just saying,‘To heck with it, I’m goingto go anyway, and I’m goingto spend whatever it takes.’ ”

But if paying twice asmuch for dinner in Londonis not your idea of a fairdeal, there are more afford-able alternatives. A travelercould:

! Go south of the bor-der. “South America isso beautiful, and theprice is right,” saidMoorhead of his re-cent visit. Most countriesin Central and South Ameri-ca are tied closely to the U.S.in currency.

! Go cruisin’. Tim Rinkos-ki of Crystal Cruises says theweak dollar makes his all-in-clusive European cruises aneven better value. “After pay-ing twice as much for a cupof coffee and a pastry at acute sidewalk cafe, they’llsoon figure out to eat theirmeals on the ship and thengo see the sights,” he said.

! Go European-lite. Leffelsuggests Quebec City, BuenosAires, “or one of those placesthat make you feel like youare in Europe.” But if you in-sist on Europe, try Barcelonaor Istanbul, which are rela-tive bargains.

! Go later. If you must see Europe, wait until win-ter, when many hotels offeroff-season discounts.

And, of course, there’s al-ways Mexico, where the pesois kind to the dollar, or theCaribbean, where PuertoRico, Turks and Caicos andthe British and AmericanVirgin Islands use the U.S.dollar as currency.

“But, realistically, it’s stillhard for people with theirhearts set on Europe to makethat substitution,” said Leffel. " Contact Star reporter ZachDunkin at (317) 444-6079.

Guests at Skin Deep—The Body Spa (eskindeep.com) in Huntington Beach, California, can treat their minds and bodies with a guided, self-serve Zen Water Experience. The five-step treatment (45 min./ $45) incorporates the elements of earth, air, fire, water and wood. Guests journey alone through the rooms of the cave-like space and an attendant prompts them when it’s time to transition to the next step. “I don’t want people wearing a watch,” says Deborah Wood, owner. “I don’t want them to keep track of anything.”

The treatment includes an exfoliating scrub under a warm rain shower, a therapeutic mud application followed by time in the steam room and a soak in a mineral-rich bath. “When people slow their bodies down, they need to slow their minds too,” Wood says. “This combines meditation and the healing aspect of water. It’s a symbolic cleansing of the body, and it allows the mind to settle.”

Self-SplurgeTREND WATCH

Can a day spa actually get away with the same self-serve philosophy as a restaurant buffet or gas station? Adding D.I.Y. treatments to your menu may be more practical and profitable than you think. Destination spas and bathhouse-style facilities have already adopted a “serve yourself” array of offerings. Here’s a sampling:

Are you a trend spotter? Email feedback and ideas to Kimiko Martinez at [email protected].

Girls Night clients at Boston’s Spa Newbury (spanewbury.com) skipped the bar and got an evening of “skin bartending” instead. This process was created by owner Selena Belisle, based on Dermalogica’s face-mapping skin analysis tool. The 1½-hour event included snacks and socialization—plus skin consultations and Q&A sessions led by licensed estheticians that culminated in do-it-yourself facials with Pevonia and Dermalogica products ($50/person). “At first we were scratching our heads, wondering, ‘Is this going

to work?’ For $55, we’ll do the facials for them,” Belisle says. “But we’ve had a lot of fun with them; never had a dissatisfied customer. And more than 50% purchase something.”

12 DAYSPA August 2008

Forget painting the town, visitors at the self-serve Club Mud area at Glen Ivy Hot Springs (glenivy.com) in Corona, California, paint themselves instead. According to Denise Sutterfield, marketing manager, Club Mud is included in the spa’s admission price (Monday-Friday/$35, weekends and holidays/$48), and about 80% of guests opt to slather on the nutrient-rich, therapeutic red clay. “Because Club Mud is included, many of our guests feel that the treatment is just part of the day,” she says. “They keep coming back to enjoy Club Mud, because they see and feel the difference in their skin.”

The magnesium oxide in the clay mud helps prevent leg cramps, osteoporosis and PMS. Its high iron content also cleanses blood, making clients less prone to lethargy. “Guests may think they’re getting down and dirty,” Sutterfield says, “but in reality, they’re getting spic-and-span!”

Page 6: Kimiko Martinez Beauty Writing

Young locals and hotel guests have a place of their own to unwind at Sea Spa at Loews Coronado Bay Resort & Spa (loewshotels.com) in Coronado, California. Birthday packages for members evolved into an entire space specifically for the younger set, including a beach-themed lounge with iPod chairs, a flat screen TV, air hockey and Nintendo Wii. The Pottery Barn PBteen Spa Room includes ocean accents, such as hibiscus-print sheets and a shell chandelier.

Manis and pedis are the most popular treatments, according to spa director Krystal Mason, as well as fitness massages for boys and youth facials for girls. “Our facials are more like a tutorial for them so they can learn to take care of their skin,” Mason says.

But many of the young clients are already quite savvy spa-goers, Mason says. “I’ve had girls tell me they’ve been getting facials for seven years already,” she says. “This age group is definitely knowledgeable, so it’s imperative that we serve them.”

Teens spend billions each year on health and beauty. Tap into this mass market with tailored spa treatments and spaces geared specifically for these savvy spenders.

Teen SceneTREND WATCH

You’re more likely to hear Hannah Montana than Zen-like nature sounds at The SPAhhhT Youth Spa, at the Hyatt Regency Hill Country Resort and Spa (wildflowerspa.com) in San Antonio, Texas. From Memorial Day through Labor Day, young guests have a place of their own to indulge in 25- to 50-minute treatments ranging from fully clothed, adult-supervised massages to hand-painted nail art and hair weaving.

While the treatments are adult, the atmosphere isn’t. Lava lamps, black lights, brightly colored walls and sleek, satin comforters give the rooms a funky, youthful feel. “Parents have repeatedly asked us to offer spa treatments for their children,” says Gino Caliendo, the resort’s general manager. “The SPAhhhT is our solution. Parents have Windflower—The Hill Country Spa as an adult haven to escape to, and their children have a cool, fun, unique place to get ‘grown-up’ services.”

Sleepover parties, salt scrubs, spray tans and more are tailored toward the middle and high school set at Teens Too. The spa at Skin Sense’s (skinsense.com) Brier Creek location in Raleigh, North Carolina, features its own

treatment and locker rooms, and a specialized menu. Services such as Max Relax, a back, neck and shoulder massage (25 min./$45), Cheek to Chic mini facials (25 min./$45) and Twinkletoes pedicures (45 min./$35), as well as the colorful, interactive website (teenstoospa.com), tempt teens to this spa-within-a-spa.

“Teen spa services are a unique, often overlooked, niche market, and we’ve had great success with our location,” says Ana Jansen, marketing coordinator at Skin Sense. “Angela Padgett, our owner, decided to start Teens Too spa because she saw a need for specialized services for the teen/tween demographic and knew that parents who visit us would love to share the experience with their children.”

For years, young women have turned to the fashion/beauty/lifestyle magazine Seventeen. Now, Texas teens can receive the same sort of advice and services at the Seventeen studio.spa.salon (seventeenspa.com) in Plano, Texas. From the touch-and-try Make-up Bar and Internet Bar to the popular Pedicure Pit, this space is geared for on-the-go, savvy young women. Treatments include massage, facials, waxing, spray tanning and more.
