Facts  about  theYoruba  of  Ife    The  Kingdom  of  Ife  existed  between  ca.  500  –  1700  AD  •  They  began  creaGng  naturalisGc  (i.e.,  realisGc)  images  in  terraco:a,  then  brought  this  look  into  their  metalwork.    

•  The  Ife  developed  metal  casGng  in  region  and  exceled  in  sculptural  casGng.  Their  techniques  were  adopted  by  surrounding  cultures,  such  as  the  Benin.  

•  ArGsGcally  ahead  of  Europe  in  this.  In  fact,  Europeans  iniGally  refused  to  believe    Africans  could  create  such  exquisite  art.
