Kings Mountain Community Organizations

Community Definition

The boundaries of the community are the corridor extending along Skyline Blvd. between Highway 92 and

Bear Gulch Road West. Throughout its length, the corridor extends approximately one mile to the west

and one-half mile to the east of Skyline Blvd. In addition, properties adjoining those roads that are

accessible only within the boundaries as described above are included. This includes Star Hill Road, Bear

Gulch Road West, Native Sons Road, Durham Road, and Bear Gulch Road East.

Kings Mountain Volunteer Fire Brigade, Inc. (KMVFB)

The purpose of this nonprofit organization is to maintain and manage, with legal authority and

obligations, the structure and grounds at 13889 Skyline Blvd, known as the Community

Center/Firehouse, and to promote civic and social interest

among the members and families of this organization and

community. It is governed by a board, consisting of 7

members, 6 of whom are elected by the members, and the

Fire Chief. A volunteer Building Manager may be

appointed. Funding is from the Art Fair, donations and

annual membership dues (due on January 1). Membership includes the privilege of using the

Community Center for private functions.

The Fire Department’s purpose is to protect life and property from fire (with the aid of

Home Locator forms), and to render services in the case of accidents or other

emergencies. The department is a sub-organization of the Brigade. The Department

consists of an elected chief, 2 assistant chiefs, volunteer fire fighters, and Disaster

Services workers who are all trained with the assistance of the California Department of

Forestry. Funding is from the Fire Brigade, donations and special event proceeds.

Kings Mountain Association (KMA)

The KMA exists for the purpose of organizing projects that benefit the Kings

Mountain community, facilitating and communicating items that interest or

concern the community, and for holding special activities whereby members of

the Association may become acquainted with each other and the community’s

organizations. The board consists of 7 directors and elects 4 officers from this

director pool. Funding is derived from annual membership dues (due on

January 1).

Kings Mountain Emergency Preparedness (KMEP)

This is the support structure needed in the event of a major emergency on Kings Mountain. Through

the use of Area Captains and CB radios, every house can be checked for any reportable need.

Funding is from the Art Fair and donations. The group works closely with the Fire Department for

training and drills.

Kings Mountain Radio Club – N6ZX

[email protected]

Kings Mountain Radio Club works closely with the Kings Mountain Fire Department and the Kings

Mountain Emergency Preparedness group. We strongly encourage members of our community to

obtain amateur radio licenses to aid our residents in case of emergency or disaster due to our semi-

isolated location. An amateur radio license is relatively easy to obtain and requires no knowledge of

Morse code. We can help you earn your license.

The ECHO

Mailing address: 13887 Skyline Blvd., Woodside, CA 94062

This is the community’s publication used by the community organizations and residents as a medium of

communication. The editor is a volunteer. The funding of this newsletter comes from the Art Fair and

donations.

The Kings Mountain Yahoo Group

This is a private online e-mail group where residents share views and other information regarding our

neighborhoods, offer help and items for sale, advertise their own services to other community

members, and generally stay in touch. Any resident of Kings Mountain or environs as well as people

who have a viable interest in this community can join. To receive an invitation to join, contact Joe

“Rocky” Rockmore, at [email protected]. Be sure to include your address or other qualifying

information. *See section in this booklet on the Yahoo Group.

request. Note: We are no longer taking telephone requests for building use on the Fire

Brigade phone line.

Fire Brigade. Annual dues are currently set at $35. (Note: KMA is a separate entity.)

2. Rental fees are subject to time and use of the community center.

3. A contract is required and a deposit may be requested in certain circumstances.

Events will not be placed on the calendar until the contract and separate checks for the

fee and deposit have been received.

Kings Mountain Emergency Preparedness (Plan)

KMEP is a Kings Mountain organization founded, staffed and managed by local volunteers

who form a community network providing emergency communications, search and rescue

operations, earthquake preparedness, etc., in parallel with the Kings Mountain Fire

Department, Office of Emergency Services (OES), the County Sheriff’s Department and other in

the event of natural or man-mad disasters.

In a disaster or emergency KMEP’s Area Captains will check on their neighbors to determine

their needs and will assist them in helping to obtain needed services, and to help them in

communicating with family or others outside the area.

An emergency contact list of Area Captains for Kings Mountain neighborhoods in maintained

and updated as needed. We welcome residents of our various neighborhoods to volunteer as

Area Captains to assist when needed.

KMEP was founded in 1992 and since that time has planned and conducted emergency

response drills once or twice annually, checking the OK and HELP signs to determine whether

assistance is needed. These drills are followed by neighborhood BBQs at the Community

Center in order for members of the Kings Mountain community to meet and get to know their

neighbors.

KMEP remains active at the present time and in lieu of monthly or bi-monthly meetings will

conduct a monthly area communication check-in (phone, CB or amateur radio) per its

emergency contact list. KMEP will also arrange training for Area Captains as training

resources become available.

For further information and questions, please feel free to contact Pat Wurster at 851-2272 or

your Area Captain.
