The stories and legends about him embrace his time as a Roman soldier and then as a new convert to Christianity and his eventual election as Bishop. Once I had immersed myself in his life story, the words of the various sections of the cantata flowed relatively easily and I hope the music enhances those words and that this cantata serves as a suitable celebration of this remarkable saint.” Reg Meuross sang three of his highly acclaimed songs and described the evening as “a lovely village event.” Apart from the new ballad, perhaps Reg’s most moving contribution was about a violin that survived the Titanic called “The band played Sweet Marie.” Julia Cartwright from the Far Above Rubies project read her moving poem about her great-grandmother Lizzie Tilley. Capacity crowd for successful St Martin's Music event

A capacity audience of more than 250 people enjoyed three world premieres on one night here in Kingsbury Episcopi on May 20th. St. Martin’s Church hosted the very happy, free, community event featuring international composer and conductor Ronald Corp’s new Cantata St. Martin sung by a

specially assembled choir of more than sixty adults and children. Summer Term 2017 Evacuee trip to Minehead This term, as part of our whole-school topic titled ‘Living with War’, Elm, Ash and Oak classes went on our evacuee day out; we each dressed as evacuees, and caught the steam train from Bishops Lydeard to the seaside at Minehead where we had lunch by the sea. If you had finished your lunch you were allowed to play in the sand and with the rocks (it was very fun). Netball and Football Tournament at Huish On 24th April, the KEPS football and netball teams went to Huish to play in the tournament. The netball team came second overall and the football team came third. As you can see both of the teams played extremely well and represented our school wonderfully. End of year play At the moment, Oak class (Year 6) are busy rehearsing their play ‘We’ll Meet Again.’ It is an exciting performance where evacuee children are sent off into the countryside due to World War 2. It is a very moving performance and all of the children are excited for the production. Year 6 residential On Wednesday 17th we made a long journey (four hours) to Beam House (located in Devon). One of the groups started with high-ropes, another started with aeroball and the other one started with the challenge course (which was extremely muddy). After about twenty minutes we all headed in for dinner; it was delicious. Soon after that we went onto the basketball court to play Outdoor-Cluedo and the person who was killed was killed by the Piggle Monster and with a wetsuit. Other activities that we did included body boarding and a coastal walk. Swimming Pool Our swimming pool is now open again for a term of swimming – we are all desperate to get in the pool and start our lessons! We are also excited about our June Fair, our sports day and our swimming gala. It promises to be a brilliant summer term!

By Rylan and Jack H, Year 6 Oak Class

Spring Term 2017 We have had an exciting term, with a whole school topic of ‘Extraordinary Earth’. We have done a lot of interesting things including a Fire Service workshop, NSPCC and Wessex Water assemblies as well as our Easter church service. Other events that we have enjoyed were: Pancake Race On Shrove Tuesday, we loved running in pancake races, and Quantocks House came first. The house captains held up the trophy with the green ribbon around the handle. Year 5 Residential The Year 5’s went on their residential to New Barn - all of them said they enjoyed it! Most people loved: the pig; the Iron Age village; the orienteering; the night walk; den building and the pottery. Comic Relief and NSPCC Green Day On Friday the 24th of March, we raised money to save children in the world by hav-ing funny hair or wigs. Also for the NSPCC we wore green clothes to raise even more money. Fundraising for the school swimming pool shower The school council had an idea to get a shower for the school pool, to raise money we are doing cake sales. Bethan and Ellie are doing a sponsored coast to coast cycle ride, and the Year 6 girls did a tea party at

East Lambrook. World Book Day and Book Fair On the 17th March, everyone dressed up as their favourite book characters to coincide with the school’s book fair (a book shop that is portable). Also book club organised activities like book bingo, a book hunt and an assembly.

This term has seen lots of great learning happening, and we’re excited about our new topic next term titled ‘World War II’, as well as the opportunity to be outside more in the sunshine.

£1000 raised for KEPS swimming pool I would like to thank everyone who sponsored Bethan and Ellie for their 75mile bike ride. Well done girls. Unfortunately, we are still in need of more money for the upkeep and repairs to the pool. If you didn't sponsor the girls but would like to make a donation for this valuable asset to our village please contact Barb Wright 01935 824834. Thank you for your support

The First World War Project KTT is planning a commemoration of those who died in the world wars especially WW1 and hopes to obtain some funding from the Lottery Fund. However, the Lottery fund expects

organisations to meet some of the costs of their projects. So, Kingsbury Time Travellers will need to raise monies and we have set a target of about £3000. As a small volunteer organisation, this is a lot of money, but we will arrange events to support this aim. With this edition of Parrett Talk you should have a supplement WW1& The People of The Parish which gives more information about this work. We are seeking contributions from

Long Sutton Friends Meeting House

Quakers celebrate 300 years in heart of Somerset

Long Sutton Quakers celebrate the 300th anniversary of their Meeting House this July with a programme of events including plays, films, exhibitions and guest speakers. The celebrations will also include the launch of an illustrated commemorative book, as the Quaker meeting marks the tercentenary of Friends Meeting House, completed in July 1717. The long history of Quakers in Long Sutton is integral to the history of the village and the wider area - with links to Oliver Cromwell, Huntley and Palmers biscuit company and the founder of Quakerism, George Fox - and the existence of the meeting house is due to Long Sutton landowner William Steele. The weekend celebrations begin in the Meeting House at 10.30am, Saturday 8 July with a speech by architectural historian Julian Orbach, followed by the official book launch of Long Sutton Quakers: Over 300 Years. Pupils from Long Sutton Primary School have designed commemorative cards to mark the anniversary, which will be on display during weekend. One design will be chosen by the Quaker Meeting to be produced as a greetings card. Events take place at both the Meeting House and Long Sutton Village Hall on Saturday and Sunday, with refreshments available throughout the weekend. All events are free - please see the Long Sutton Quakers Facebook page for full schedule and venues. For more information please contact Chris and Gill Greenfield on 01458 241325 or [email protected], or Moyra and Richard Montagu on 01458 223094 or [email protected].

anyone connected to the parish who feels they might like to offer support. We feel our proposals are dynamic, helping to promote the parish and offer opportunity to a wide number of people of all ages. The proposals are a result of a wide range and number of conversations and connections. They also represent a way in which the parish might like to pay its respects, 100 years on, to those who left it never to return. Thank you in anticipation for your support. Contact details, to help us co-ordinate the work, are in the supplement. Please get in contact to find out how you might contribute.

Withies in the Curriculum Brian & Betty White opened their arms and doors for an event

from the Time Travellers at their premises at Lockleaze from which they ran their withy business. Year 6 Pupils took part in a number of integrated and related workshops using maths, poetry, dance, hands-on creative, photographs, artefacts and maps. People who use and have spent their lives with withies, provided the children with first - hand information and experiences. The event was designed to connect with and build on this withy tradition & culture. Our thanks to the Headteacher, Mr Wayne Higgins and staff for giving us this opportunity. Big thanks especially go to Maurice

Fawcett, Steve Cooper and brothers, Les and Hugh Male who led the willow stripping and weaving. Jonathan & Nicola Coates of Coates Willow and John Leach Muchelney Pottery provided us with materials and numerous objects showing the diversity in the use of willow. Our thanks to them. Keith Stevens provided the dance tuition and all ended up dancing “Strip the Willow”.

Introduction to the Cider Apple Growing & Making Business of the Parish

Sunday, 1st October 2017 Kingsbury Time Travellers are organising this afternoon event at The Rusty Axe in Stembridge. It will be a ticketed event since we have been able to attract the participation not only of key individuals within the parish but also of James Crowden and Liz Coppas. Parish Council Minutes April. Residents from Lower Burrow are frustrated at the state of their road - drains that are blocked, ditches that are not dug out. These are both causing a great deal of water to run on the road causing the road surface to erode badly into lots of potholes. Although they have met with County Highways to discuss the issues they would like the parish council to put pressure on Highways as well, especially as recently the road called Pulpitts way leading down onto the moors had recently been resurfaced. As no-one actually lives down that road, it was felt the money could have been better spent. The Parish Council had no objections to the following planning applications. Application to vary condition 5 of planning approval 07/040332/

REM to remove wording 'or other external alterations' in order to benefit from permitted development rights for other alterations or extensions at 4 Threadneedle Close, Kingsbury Episcopi. Retention of timber pony shelter on orchard land adjoining Rowans, Stembridge. The erection of an agricultural workers dwelling and detached carport/garage at Hawthorn Hill Deer Park, East Lambrook, adding that the need for the dwelling needed to be justified and clarification on whether more agricultural buildings would be needed there. Concern had been raised regarding two ash trees at the rear of Bests Field that belong to the parish council. The trees are suffering from Ash Die Back disease and if they were to fall down they may fall towards the houses. An offer has been made to cut the trees down and cllrs agreed that the trees should be felled. The offer to hold a summer playday at the recreation ground was received and a contribution towards the costs has been asked for. Cllrs agreed to contribute £250 towards the day. David Warburton MP had written regarding the feasibility of a new railway station in Somerton or Langport and asked for a contribution towards the feasibility study which will cost around £30K. Cllrs agreed they would contribute £200 towards the study. The new Community Centre is now up and running. Thanks to everyone involved with this project which has taken several years of hard work from lots of people, especially David French who has dedicated a great deal of his time to make sure we now have a very impressive building to be proud of. Also, admiration for both the shop and amenities committee for their years of fundraising towards this project. It has been asked whether another dog bin could be placed at the Church Street end of the footpath coming from Gawbridge. The Clerk will ask local residents in Church Street whether they would be happy for a bin to be placed there. The Clerk will report the state of the road and drainage at Lower Burrow as well as the road along Burrow Way just past Willow Cottage. As a great deal of the finger post signs in the parish were looking tired and rusty it was asked whether we could have them repainted. The Clerk will contact the painter who painted three of the signs a couple of years ago for another quote. Cllr Aparicio reported back on costs for new village name signs. Costs were very high and in view of the fact that the parish is spread over several villages/hamlets the cost could not be justified. Also several residents from the Lambrooks and Stembridge did not want to lose their village names on the signage. It was therefore agreed not to pursue this any further. Annual Parish Council Meeting held in May David Wakely was elected as chairman for another year and Julie Pearce as vice-chair. Cllrs agreed to grant the sum of £2000 to the school towards the re-siting costs of the old shop portacabin. This would be used to help support families, to enable vulnerable children to utilise the breakfast club and afterschool care and also a place the Literacy Support Advisor to work with children and families with emotional issues. Fly tipping was discussed especially at Pulpitts way as this seems to be a favoured spot. The Clerk will speak to the enforcement officer at SSDC to see what options are available. The Community Licence at present does not have a Personal Licence holder to be the 'Designated premises Supervisor'. Without the personal licence holder, the Community Licence can't be used. Enquiries would be made as to whether there was anyone in the parish who would be prepared to do it. It was agreed that the two Ash trees at the rear of properties in Bests Field would be taken down as they were suffering from Ash Die Back disease. The Clerk will contact the contractor to get the verges cut in the parish and will contact the painter regarding repainting seven more finger post signs in the parish.

The full Parish Council minutes can be viewed by going to the Parish website www.kingsburyepiscopi.com
