Heritage News – As back to school season quickly approaches, backpacks are appearing in stores across the city, but what if the back-pack you bought this year could also help someone in need receive a new backpack? That is the idea behind Givway & Co., a local company that is hoping to raise awareness about homelessness and the importance of backpacks across the city.
The company is run by four Queen’s students who are taking part in the Queen’s Summer Inno-vation Institute program, a 16-week paid internship program that aims to spark innovation and encourage en-trepreneurship within the Kingston community. All four partners were interested in social innovation and giving back to their community so when it came time to come up with a business idea they asked local orga-nizations what they needed.
“We contacted a bunch of local organizations that need and accept donations,” explained group mem-ber Madeleine Neiman. “Through that research we found out that back-
packs are things that a lot of people need. Whether it be a shelter or an organization that donates to schools, they are a constant need across all of the organizations we spoke to.”
After deciding to run with the backpack idea the group brain-stormed different designs for their ‘fashion backpack’ – the one that consumers would purchase and use themselves. Then the group looked at other more durable options that could be donated to organizations across the city.
“There are two backpacks in our business plan, one that we will sell and one that we will donate, but we wanted to make sure that the fashion backpack still connected to the do-nated one,” explained Givway & Co. member Michelle Robinson. “People who are homeless carry most of their life on their back so we asked a local artist to design the front flap of our backpack and include those items. The result was great and we are re-ally happy with the design.”
The group admits that they were partially inspired by the shoe com-pany Toms when they came up with their buy a backpack, give a back-pack business plan, but they wanted
to use that business model and con-nect it to local companies.

The Kingston Economic De-velopment Corporation’s Small Business and Entrepreneur Office assists local entrepreneurs in the planning and development their business. KEDCO conducts nearly 1,000 business consultations every year with half of these consulta-tions being a start-up businesses. KEDCO offers free and confiden-tial consulting services to new, ex-isting and expanding businesses.
Tint World Kingston, owned by Trevor and Sue Dwyer, is an exam-ple of a new start-up in Kingston that has benefited from KEDCO’s services. Tint World Kingston opened in June of this year and of-fers auto window tinting, auto de-tailing, wheels and tire services as well as stereo and video service.
“If I had a question about the planning of my business, I went to KEDCO. They pointed me in the right direction,” said Trevor. KED-CO assisted Tint World Kingston in finding a business accountant as well as helped to find qualified employees for their business op-erations.
Genevieve Zizzo, proud busi-ness owner of Full Circle Health Network (FCHN), which offers holistic manual therapies, includ-ing message therapy, is one of the many businesses that has benefited from KEDCO’s consulting servic-es.
Zizzo consulted with the busi-ness advisors at KEDCO when she first opened her business back in 2010. Zizzo was fresh out of school and had just earned herself a Master’s Degree in Osteopathic Manipulative Sciences from Wa-terloo University. She had recently made the move to Kingston and was ready to open her own clinic. Despite her solid understanding of how the human body works, Ziz-zo’s knowledge of entrepreneur-ship was limited.
Shortly after contacting KED-CO, Zizzo began attending the many business basics workshops offered by the corporation.
“The workshops and one-on-one consultation with the advisors of-fered me a great deal of knowledge on the essentials of starting up a new business.”
Zizzo said that KEDCO directed her Futurepreneur, formerly the
Canadian Youth Business Founda-tion (CYBF), for financing oppor-tunities and to further develop her business plan.
The Small Business and En-trepreneur Office at KEDCO is a community partner with Future-preneur and helps applicants from the Kingston region including Gananoque, Napanee and Fronte-nac County with the application process.
Through Futurepreneur and with KEDCO’s help, Zizzo received a loan to go towards marketing and advertising. She was also paired with a mentor. “The mentorship component was huge. My mentor offered me great suggestions, es-pecially when it came to manag-ing people. We talked about how to hire somebody, how to fire some-body, how to interview someone and how you manage people as a business owner. It was great to have someone who was also busi-ness minded to bounce ideas off of,” she explained.
Genevieve is an example of a growing business in Kingston and an expansion success story. Four years after initially opening up her clinic, Zizzo has recently received an additional loan from Future-preneur, partnered with Homeopa-thy Kingston & Hypnobabies and moved from her Brock Street loca-tion to the historic Woolen Mill at 4 Cataraqui Street.
Zizzo said her journey into en-trepreneurship has been nothing short of amazing, thanks in part to KEDCO’s support and guidance.

It’s been a whirlwind year for Farm Girl Mobile Food Co.’s Tamara Bolger and her family. Just last year, she put the first gourmet food truck on the roads of Kingston. One year later, the business continues to grow.
“Within a few months, my husband had to quit his job,” said Tamara. “We just got too big, and couldn’t keep up.”
Tamara, her husband Peter and their three kids have only been in the com-munity for a few years, but she says Kingston is the first place that has re-ally felt like home.
“I love this city. It changed the lives of my children. My husband had his last cancer surgery here. I was very sick in December and I was in ICU at KGH [Kingston General Hospital], so my heart belongs here and anything I can do to help the city and give back, just because I don’t think I lived any-where that I felt so much love.”
It’s that same love from the commu-nity that drives Tamara to keep creat-ing great food. Every day, people come from all over Kingston to City Park to taste her daily creations. So to keep up with demand, she’s expanding.
“We’re looking at brick and mortar, so that’s the next big thing happening very soon.”
Farm Girl will be opening the Farm Girl Country Kitchen and Market in Kingston’s east end, just on the other side of the causeway.
The idea started because Tamara and her family live in the east end, but find there isn’t much for shopping, es-pecially when it comes to local food. The kitchen and market will be a little
store, but will offer many of the foods that are available on the truck, plus a lot more.
“I’m looking at a very small eatery that is also going to be a market where I’m going to sell my products, my sauces, my soups, my frozen dinners, my fresh food, but also really great lo-cal products as well.”
Tamara already sources much of her ingredients locally. She uses Pig & Ol-ive meats, Salt of the Earth vegetables, Pan Chancho breads, Sun Harvest to-matoes and cucumbers and Kingston Olive Oil Company’s oils and vin-egars. It will be those same products that make their way into the market portion of the store.
Beyond that, Tamara continues to work on partnerships. She has just started selling her salads in both the west end and downtown locations of Pig & Olive. Soon, frozen perogies will also be available.
While all of these projects keep Tamara busy and passionate, there’s one project that is really close to her heart.
“I was approached and asked, ‘could I do a hot lunch program in the schools?’ So we’re starting with one school confirmed this fall and I think there are about five or six behind.”
Tamara has three kids of her own, so creating great, healthy food for them and other children is extremely important to her. It’s also something she’s familiar with.
“I have a very picky six-year-old at home, so I’m thinking about bringing really nice pastas, things with veg-etables hidden in it that kids wouldn’t realize. Really nice soups and stews in the winter, instead of pizza or hot dogs, that’s amazing to me.”
Watching Tamara talk with custom-ers who line up at Betty Lou for lunch, it’s clear that not only does she love what she does, but also that every per-son coming to eat knows the love that goes into their food.
While “Kingston’s own Jamie Oli-ver” might seem like cliché nickname, it’s also pretty fitting.
“It’s just a labour of love for me,” Tamara says.
And with that, she is back on the truck, making the next rush of food.

Kingston Heritage News - When it comes to hir-ing staff, the Gananoque Home Hardware is big on employing students.
In fact, of the store’s 75 employees, 12 are stu-dents, who take on diverse roles such as cashiers, sales in the paint department and garden centre, shipping and receiving and in their warehouse.
“We love our students here at the store and if we get a good student we keep them all through high school, college and university. We don’t let them go,” said Laura Lee Morris, financial controller and HR personnel at the Gananoque Home Hardware, also dubbed Ken O’Connor Building Materials Ltd.
The store’s dedication to student employment did not go unnoticed. On July 23 it was recognized by the KEYS Job Centre during their 16th annual Employer Appreciation Breakfast and Award Cer-emony.
The Gananoque store was one of two businesses to receive the KEYS Star award for their outstand-ing commitment to student employment.
“Ken O’Connor Building Materials do a great job employing students in Gananoque. This is really important because with Gananoque being a smaller centre, it can be more difficult for students to find summer employment,” explained Alina Newton, KEYS Program Administrator, Summer Jobs Ser-vice.
“We also noticed that they are especially dedi-cated to student safety in the workplace,” Newton
added, noting the importance of workplace training as those most at risk at getting hurt on the job are students and young people.
“We’ve always hired students and we have al-ways been big on workplace safety so to be recog-nized for our work, is great,” said Morris.
The other business to receive a KEYS Star award at the breakfast was the MacLachlan Woodwork-ing Museum. The Museum was recognized for the learning opportunities they offer students to not only improve their skills as museum interpreters, but also to gain relevant work experience.
Also recognized was CKVI 91.9 The Cave, a community, not-for-profit radio station that runs as a focus program in the Limestone District School Board. The station was nominated by students to be the recipient of the Student Choice Award.
The Cave broadcasts throughout the school year and hires student managers and support volun-teers to serve the community during the summer months. The station also hosts summer job place-ments in July and August where participants have the opportunity to learn various aspects of radio production, including music, news and highlight pieces.
“These employers make a huge impact on stu-dents financially. They allow students the opportu-nity to attend school and also gain a wide variety of work experience - everything from restaurants to historical sites,” said Newton.
This year the KEYS Job Centre will assist over 1,500 students with their job search and coordinate funding for over 500 summer positions.

Darren Su was having trouble with his lights at Send In The Clowns on Princess St. He wanted to light his display cases so that people could clearly see his wares, but the heat from the spotlights was literally melting the plas-tic packaging on his products! In addition, his hydro bills were high. The lights used a lot of electricity and he put out a lot of heat.
While looking for a solution, Darren discovered that Kingston Hydro’s RET-R O F I T p r o -g r a m w o u l d pay for almost the entire cost of replacing his old, energy wasting incandes-cent spot lights with new, energy efficient LED spots.
“The RETROFIT program has helped quite a bit.” Says Su. “Especially in the summer time, we used to turn on all of our 3 air conditioners to cool the place down. On hot days, the 3 air condi-tioners would have a hard time cooling it down. After the retrofit, we can usually cool the same store down with 2 air condi-tioners. So in short, we save energy not only on the direct consumption from the LED light bulbs (instead of halogen), but on the air con-
ditioning too.”Incandescent light bulbs convert 90% or
more of the electricity used to run them into heat. LED bulbs are much more efficient at turning electricity into light, reducing the amount of electricity wasted as heat. With-out heat stress on the equipment or filaments that could break, LEDs also last much longer. Many LED bulbs have a 10 year warranty –
you won’t find one of those on a
halogen spot-light.

LED lights beat the heatThe Board of Directors is pleased to an-
nounce that Martin Sherris has been select-ed as the new CEO of the Greater Kingston Chamber of Commerce (GKCC).

It is a common occurrence that I am sitting with a client and the topic of social media comes up. In this case, we will focus on Twitter. As much as advertisers know they now need this presence, many have no idea where to begin and are misguided by the notion that it takes too much time. Not only do many small business owners not understand Twitter, most multimedia reps who sell digital media do not get it. If you are a traditional print multimedia rep like I am and do not yet have a Twitter presence, I suggest you get one and use it to promote your brand.
Imagine the product you are trying to sell is the best thing to come along since the invention of newspapers. The client does a simple Twitter search to test you out and you are nowhere to be found or you have 3 followers and haven’t tweeted yet. Sound familiar? Clearly, they think this rep knows nothing about digital media and must won-der whether this is the best place to spend their digital dollars. This column will edu-cate multimedia reps and small business owners on how to effectively use Twitter to grow their business.
The first thing you need to do is have a professional portrait taken so that the im-age represents your brand - not a pic from Saturday night’s bender. Twitter also allows you to use a background photo, which I use to promote my brand as your Metroland East Multimedia Representative.
Next, create a profile that makes it clear to followers what your purpose is. In my case this includes deals, interest stories, and community events pertaining to my clients and partners, as well as myself. Don’t for-get to add a personal touch. I throw Mon-treal Canadiens and tennis tweets in there for your entertainment. From reading my profile bio, my followers know exactly what they have signed up for.
Once this is complete, you should find tweeters who are after the same audience you are and steal their followers. I believe you can follow up to 1,000 right off the bat. Not all will follow you back but many will and those who don’t you can unfollow at a later date. Now that you are ready to start tweeting, make sure you tweet as promised. For example, I promote my deals from my advertisers that are live on save.ca. If the client you are tweeting about is on Twitter, make sure you let them know by includ-ing them in the tweet – e.g. if I’m tweet-ing a deal about Bath Solutions, I’ll refer to them as @Bathsolutions to make sure they see that I’m talking about them. This way they will know that you are spreading the word, which is a great way to score brown-ie points. Make sure you are frequently searching for your clients to see if they are on twitter and if they are, follow them.
Include hashtags in your tweets, e.g. #saveca, #coupon. Think of hashtags as a search engine. Coupon lovers will type #coupon into the Twitter search function looking for deals they can use on their next
shopping expedition. When they do, all re-cent tweets that contain #coupon will come up and they will find the last save.ca cou-pon I just tweeted about.
When your clients tweet about a deal or a charity they are involved in, make sure you retweet their message. This can go a long way, as they are notified that you retweeted the message. Content, videos and pictures are also popular tweets that will bring new followers. It just so happens if you are a multimedia rep with Metroland Media, we produce content, videos, online deals, flyers, coupons and much more for our advertisers so Twitter is the perfect out-let. Should you be at an event waving the company flag, make sure you take a picture with your smartphone and let the world know where you are. Twitter loves this.
Just remember, we are marketers and business owners in the digital world so let’s embrace it. There is no better way to do that than social media. Create a brand, be con-sistent and show the advertising world that they need to be doing business with you as you clearly get it and have the Twitter pres-ence to prove it.

Lobbying for a better business cli-mate hits the national stage at the end of September, when Chambers from across the country meet in Charlotte-town, Prince Edward Island for the Canadian Chamber Annual General Meeting (AGM).
The work to ensure each policy resolution put forward is as effec-tive as possible is already underway. Currently, a group representing the Ontario Chamber Network, including Kingston, is examining each potential
policy resolution to make sure each is representative of the needs of Ontario businesses. In 2013, Bill Stewart, Ad-vocacy & Policy Development Spe-cialist co-chaired the Ontario Caucus – bringing policy resolutions to the Canadian Chamber on issues such as red tape reduction, closing the skills gap, removal of international and in-terprovincial trade barriers, nuclear policy, security, copyright and more. Bill has participated in the provincial conference calls over the past two
years representing Kingston.Each policy resolution details is-
sues and offers recommendations for improvement in a specific area. The resolutions that are approved at the AGM become the documents the Ca-nadian Chamber uses to approach the federal government to lobby on be-half of the business community.
This year, some of the areas to be addressed at the AGM include labour mobility, retaining and at-tracting international students, im-
proving the climate for innovation, transportation strategies around air, land, water and rail, improving agri-business, improving access to capital for smaller airports, taxation of cor-porate groups and tourism and small - medium enterprises.
Lobbying for a better business cli-mate is a core priority for the Great-er Kingston Chamber of Commerce. These efforts happen at all three lev-els of government: municipal, pro-vincial and federal and in a variety
of ways from letters, to one-on-one discussions, through articles in this publication and the policy resolution process at the Ontario Chamber of Commerce and Canadian Chamber AGMs.

Eight-year-old Silka Olvet has a smile that
can light up virtually any room – even the old, drab audiology clinic area at Hotel Dieu Hospital where she receives amazing care that enables her to experience the sounds of the world.
After Silka was born at their Buck Lake home in 2006, Leslie Kirby-Olvet, noticed her infant daughter didn’t startle when the family’s dog would bark. At six weeks of age, Silka had a hearing screening test that indicated that she needed further investigation. Their
set with the Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) clinic at Hotel Dieu.
“She slept through two hours of different types of tests,” her mom recalls, determining that Silka had mild-to-moderate hearing loss. By the time she was
seven months old, Silka had
aids. Initially, she was seen in the clinic every three months, but as she has grown, these visits have been reduced to twice yearly. During those visits,

that Leslie says she would change about the ENT experience, it’s the environment. The clinic is located in the 130-year-old Murray Building (once home to the City’s Public Library) in a cramped
space with no bright, natural lighting. It’s in the basement of this building where Silka has her hearing tests done. Hotel Dieu is planning to move ENT into another space within the hospital that is designed and
technical and patient care needs of today, but in order to do that, UHKF needs to raise the local share of costs for redevelopment of the new space.
ENT is where people receive care for virtually anything above the collarbone (with the exception of eyes and
brain) – this includes breathing, swallowing and hearing disorders, balance and dizziness and head and neck cancers.
New patients coming to the clinic today are facing
wait (which translates into many sleepless nights for parents and young children who are plagued with chronic ear infections).
More people require ENT services today than ever before – and the numbers continue to grow. By moving the clinic to a larger, more contemporary space, staff will be better able to meet the needs of patients, just like Silka, from across the region.
“We’ve had incredible support at the hospital from day one. They have been great with Silka,” Leslie says. “We’re really lucky to have that support in our community.”

Helping the community one backpack at a timeand while that is great we want to be able to show our customers the impact they are making in their own community,” added group member Lindley Kenny. “No matter where we end up manufacturing, we want to keep selling local to Kingston or the neighboring cities. We want to keep everything community based.”
Givway & Co. is still in the very early stages of production and they only have a limited supply of back-packs to work with currently, but they are looking to produce more and they hope to sell at local markets in the coming weeks.
“We’ve sent a few backpacks out to different companies to get quotes on how much it would cost to manu-
facture,” added Kenny. “We will be selling backpacks through our web-site eventually but for now we want to be able to connect with our cus-tomer s and get their feedback.”
Donated backpacks will currently be donated to Dawn House in Kings-ton and the Kingston Youth Shelter and the group hopes to expand to more organizations in the future, but for now they are just happy with how things have turned out thus far.
“It has been really exciting and we’ve been able to go to local shel-ters and speak to them about what their needs are,” added group mem-ber Chantal Tshimanga. “Backpacks are always needed and it feels great to help.”

Over the last several months the KHBA DC committee has been heavily involved in the City of Kingston’s Development Charge and Impost Review process.
In November of 2013, the city retained Watson and Associates to conduct the review process and pre-pare a Background Study in support of new by-laws for the collection of fees for the years 2014 – 2019.
The DC committee has taken part in this process as part of the Steer-ing Committee in charge of driving the review process. This has become the most detailed and intense review undertaken to date, largely driven by the KHBA committee obtain and review much more detail than we have ever had access to prior to this review.
To assist in the review, a num-
ber of consultants were retained by KHBA for legal advise, engineering peer review and methology pur-poses.
On April 3, 2014 the committee was presented with a first draft of the background study that included a number of unexpected additions and revisions from the previous studies, resulting in an increase of $2,394.00 in the DC and an additional increase of $4,676.00 in the impost over the current amounts.
Through the efforts of the com-mittee these proposed charges have now been reduced to $229.00 and $4086.00 increases, respectively.
To date, the committee was suc-cessful in,
: reducing the combined proposed increase in the DC and Impost from $7,070 to $4,315
: moving the date of annual index adjustment from Sept. to Jan.
: implementing a phased in pe-riod for the proposed increases over a period of 3 years.
: removed proposed new services and charges that were originally in-cluded and would have resulted in increased fees.
: obtained a commitment from the city to include the impost charges for water and wastewater in the de-velopment charge by-law in 2019.
The new DC and Impost By-laws will come into effect of Sept. 30, 2014. In the time between now and that date the committee will continue to review the impost costs to ensure the projected costs are justified, fair and reasonable for our members and the new home buyers.

Tucked neatly away, just off of Rideau Street on Cataraqui Street, is a business making splashes across the country. Living Rooms Ecological Living and Building is taking being healthy to heart.
“We come at this from a trades background ac-tually,” John Sinclair, who owns the store with his brother Michael. “We had a heritage finishing busi-ness in Oakville, where we’re from, so we started really using a lot of these building materials that we’re now selling here.”
John and Michael Sinclair have product lines that wouldn’t be considered the norm, especially when it comes to their renovation and building materials.
Living Rooms has a simple philosophy and is guided by the brothers’ principles. Firstly, does it do any harm to people? Secondly, does it harm the en-vironment? If it does, they won’t carry it.
That means everything in the store is natural and completely chemical free.
“In a lot of our products, you can grab the can and you can read the ingredients as you would a soup label at a grocery store,” says Michael.
When John and Michael first opened Living Rooms, they knew there was a demand for chemi-cal free products. Clients had concerns about things like off-gassing from paints and other finishes. In researching alternatives, the brothers found the first chemical free paint in California.
That research has also never stopped. While they make an effort to source products locally, there are also product lines from Europe and Asia that are much more environmentally conscious than what is available in North America.
One of the most obvious products is a linseed oil paint they import from Sweden.
“It’s probably the cleanest paint in the world,”
says Michael. “It’s also being used in a lot of heri-tage jobs, so places like the Palace of Versailles in France, Holcombe Castle in England. I mean it’s ba-sically the standard now of paints used in Europe.”
While the price point may be higher, the paint can last up to 25 years before the area need to be repaint-ed or refinished. It’s these durable and thoughtful products that really stand out to John and Michael.
“We get people who come to us and say ‘have you seen this?’ or ‘Can you get this?’, or ‘this is something that I found really worked for me,’ so we love having those relationships with people.” says John. “It’s something that’s really important to us, that sense of building a community around us.”
Living Rooms does about half their business through their store, and the other half online, shipping products across the country.
“Most of the things in the shop are unique to us, probably in Ontario, certainly in the Kingston area,” says Michael. “I think we are the furthest east in all of Canada of any store like this. So we often get orders from the east coast for all of this stuff.”
While the business continues to grow, the brothers hold their values close to their hearts. They were even surprised by a larger market of people they weren’t expecting.
“We get a lot of people who come in with chemical sensitivities who just can’t use other products, they make them physically sick,” says John. “So it’s been amazing to see people like that. For the first time in a long time, or possibly ever in their life, they’re able to renovate.”
Not only do the Sinclairs know a lot about their products, their trades background enables them to help customers through any project.
